Focus Should Be On C.J. Mosley

March 11th, 2019

It sure has the feel that Bucs middle linebacker Kwon Alexander will be taking his rooster haircut elsewhere.

And if that is the case, the Bucs have no reason not to shift serious focus to free agent middle/inside linebacker C.J. Mosley.

Joe has already written the “No Risk It; No Biscuit” rallying cry of Bucco Bruce Arians should turn towards the defense. And with the Bucs eyeing a hole to fill at middle/inside linebacker, Mosley should be Target No. 1.

Mosely is both durable (missed three games in five years as a starter with the Crows) and a winner. And unlike Alexander, Mosley played and started on one of the most ferocious defenses in the NFL.

If the Bucs want to build a winning culture in addition to getting a quality defender to improve a sorry gang of lousy players who performed much better as a wannabe biker gang than an NFL defense, and if the Bucs are truly serious about trying to win games, then Mosley should be the highest priority for Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

If Joe was Licht, he’d be camped out at Mosley’s residence plying him with top-shelf liquor, prime rib and lobster (and if Mosley is single, high-quality women) for the next three days straight.

We will lose out to someone who has the money to overpay him, just like Kwon. I would start looking at tier 2 quality players who won’t break the bank.

  2. AwShbucs Says:

Bucs do not have very much cap space. Even if we release Allen, Gholston, Unrein, Mejax and GMC, that only leaves us with around 36 million in cap space. Minus the 9 million or so we’ll need for our draft class and udfa’s gives us 27 million to make signings.

Keep in mind that their are a number of lower level role players that have yet to be resigned from last years roster. Around 20 or so roster spots that have to be filled. So really well probably have around 18-20 million to sign free agents.

  3. Wausa Says:

    Agree with Dewey

  4. Etzel Says:

Mosley has also played behind man-beast block-eater Brandon Williams his entire career.

Stand-up linebacker seems to not be a highly valued position in today’s NFL. Just sign some UDFA oversized safeties.

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

LOL…Buc fans are looking over the Berns menu….but will be buying at the Grocery Outlet

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Mosely would be good….or Badger…..but not both. Can’t afford.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Mosley……oops.

  8. isrBuc Says:

If it was me, it wouldn’t even be about money. All FAs thought they can turn this team around and failed. Eventually they got to understand this is a lost cause. If someone signs with the bucs its either he got no other option or he really only cares about money cause they cant be that stupid anymore

  9. Joeypoppems Says:

If Kwon is actually going to get $12m then maybe @Hawaiian was a lot closer than I thought when he suggested Mosley could get $15m.

Lets face it Joe(s), if this is the market for LBs who dont rush the passer, then LB will be a top option early in the draft. I cant see them paying THAT much

  10. miken Says:

    sign Mosley please!!!!!!!

  11. GhostofSchiano Says:

    agree with Dewey

  12. Nick Says:

I know you all remember what the foundation of the buccaneer defensive turnaround was , in case you forgot his name was Hardy Nickerson middle linebacker !!!

  13. Jamaal Stanley Says:

Sick of this team providing huge meals to eat when cats become free agents. What part y’all don’t get, they come here and go vacation. I want my star mlb young and hungry. His name Devin White if you ain’t familiar.

  14. Bird Says:

Colts and jets interested in him
Both have around 100 mil in cap space

His value is 10.6 on sportrac
So someone will over pay and give 12 or 12 plus

If Kwon. Goes then devin white , here we come.

  15. Not there yet Says:

If we can get devin white while trading down to do it I’m all in. Don’t trust licht in free agency

    @Bird…

Man you’ve been having a good run of days/weeks lately in various threads..nice.

On another subject, looks like it’s Kleenex time for the @Joe’s! Surrrprise, surrrprise.

    Go Bucs! Get Quinnen!

  18. Polkfan Says:

No way we get him , there’s contenders with money that will pay the same or more than us. We might as well go to Devin Whites ig and welcome him to Tampa.

  19. bucfan999 Says:

Can’t Afford him, but we do need to make cuts for rookie class and some bargain basement F/A. I would cut McCoy, DJax, Allen, Unrein, Anger, Evan Smith and maybe Gholston (but he might be a very good fit in the new 3-4 Defense. This would free up about $49 million. With this money I would put $7 million aside for the rookie class and go bargain basement shopping. JJ Nelson @ WR, Josh Mauro, Olsen Pierre or Mike Pennel @ DL, Kevin Minter, Sam Acho, Josh Bynes & Deone Buccannon @ LB, Justin Bethel, Morris Claiborne @ DB. My one big signing would be the Honey Badger Tyrann Mathieu. All have experience in Todd Bowles type Defense and could hit the ground running. In the draft I would take Devin White.

  20. Anonymous Says:

Mosely = Hardy Nickerson = Change of culture

  21. Stu Says:

Trade McCoy and his salary cap number for Mosley? Doesn’t look like it…

  22. pick6 Says:

if the bucs can’t afford kwon they probably can’t outbid teams flush with cap space on a far more proven and far more reliable player at the same position. i think Lavonte is moving inside in the 3-4 alignment unless a guy like Devin White is drafted, maybe even if he’s drafted. at OLB the bucs will be giving some of their 4-3 DEs a run, hoping that a tweener athlete like Noah Spence flourishes in that role along with draft picks and lesser FAs

  23. SOEbuc Says:

Another Dewey fan. Bruce is not rebuilding remember. Need to concentrate on tier 2 players, depth, and the draft this year.

  24. Dubcity06 Says:

    Hope so

  25. SOEbuc Says:

“Another Dewey fan. Bruce is not rebuilding remember. Need to concentrate on tier 2 players, depth, and the draft this year.”

A great coaching squad that’s had experience with good teams knows how to find good tier 2 players and depth.

  26. adam from ny Says:

great starter piece like hardy nickerson was…this is the guy, no question…

  27. adam from ny Says:

this defense will come togther fast with “big mose” manning the middle

  28. adam from ny Says:

but if you look at his career stats, his play has fallen off a bit over the past year…but stats are for losers…taco bell is for winners

  29. SOEbuc Says:

NO REASON to pay this guy $10-12 million when we can get White at number five. Just add to continuous depth that may continue to occur with our young players with fat contracts.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Won’t bother me if the Bucs don’t make headlines in FA.

Maybe it’s about time we see a HC come in here stick his boot up a couple of asses……..and how about this for a concept ………actually develope the young players we have on the team.

We blame the roster every year and think we can buy our way out of it in FA. And every year it’s the same results. You don’t win in this league with flashy free agents. It’s done as a team. It’s not about how many sacks you get you home runs you hit. More important is how many tackles you don’t miss and how many assignments you don’t miss.

Free Agency aren’t gonna do squat if you don’t play fundamentals. Which is something we havent done in the past decade.

You guys all want a winning team and then cry about the process……..Signing Dee Ford and Honey Bagder and Mosley is not what needs to be fixed.

What this team needs is to start from scratch in the preparation/practice Dept. Whatever they are doing wasn’t working, this is evident in the lack of fundamentals.

Once we start preparing like Championships our best players will start producing. If you can play solid football you can win football games in this league. On a good day we can absolutely compete with New Orleans & Atlanta. We need them all to be good days. Do that and you win 8-9 games. But we haven’t saw solid football in Tampa Bay in 2 decades. It’s sickening.

If the team starts winning then you look to add a free agent or 2 and put you over the top. Until then you get the team playing fundamental football. That’s the first step………….And when that happens you may not want a Dee Ford a Honey Badger and a Mosely…….you may want a Level Bell & a Patrick Peterson.

Let’s get good first. Then get great.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  31. Clw JB Says:

Kwon to the 49ers is a great move by the FO here – no way he is worth 13.5 mil, just no way on earth

trade back from 5 and grab the LSU kid -save about $10 mil a year, get younger, faster and better IMO

  32. BigBuc1981 Says:

I can’t agree with this Joe. We signed Vinny Curry and B Allen last year straight off a major role on a defense that had just won a world championship, didn’t help at all. I believe the Bucs Brass should target some familiar faces of T Bowles Defense. I’m not saying your wrong, but I certainly won’t say your right. He would be another valuable piece that we would all hope would have success in TB’s D.

  33. Defense Rules Says:

    Keep dreamin’ Joe.

  34. Rod Munch Says:

So if Mosley is clearly a better LB than Kwon, which seems to be the bandwagon opinion as of late, then the Bucs can’t even hope to afford him.

So he’s either unaffordable, or the Ravens, with $30m in cap space, just let him walk for “cheap”…

  35. Stanglassman Says:

Everyone acts like there is no risk in trading back and picking up Devin White. When 31 other teams know what you’re doing you stand a big risk of someone trading up the pick before you to snag your guy. If you really think the kid a perinatial all pro then you take him at 5.

  36. Stanglassman Says:

Rod- I agree. The market has spoken. If KWON gets 13m/y Mosley will demand 15 easy. That’s too much for the Bucs with their current cap. I love CJ and agree he would be the Hardy culture change we need but I don’t see how the Bucs can afford it even if he wanted to play here. People need to keep in mind it’s up to the players where they sign in FA.

  37. Mike Evans Goat Says:

    Stanglassman
Agreed. There is now way we can trade back and still land White. If we don’t take him then the Giants might. The Bengals and Browns are also drooling over him. Take him at 5 unless we can get a Kings ransom, and then take Devin Bush with the later pick.

  38. Issaic haggins Says:

Boy has Licht got Himself a Mess , No cap space and one starting LB !! Oh Ya one starting Corner !!! Licht better stock up on the beer , he’s going to need it !!! Honey if I can get Bruce in here to coach up my mess, I can get 3 more mil of the Glazers Money and I can just retire when I’m fired !!! I really don’t think they have payed attention to my second round draft picks it hasn’t come up and let’s hope it doesn’t 😴
