Replacing Jay Hayes

February 12th, 2018

NFL defensive line coach Brentson Buckner.

Who knows who the Bucs had in mind when they informed defensive line coach Jay Hayes he was being relieved of his duties last week?

Given the fact it is February 12, there are scant NFL openings aside from with the Colts. Just about anyone worthy of employing is employed. So the talent pool isn’t exactly flowing over.

Now that leads Joe to a guy dismissed during coaching changes this offseason who has a connection to Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht. That would be former Cardinals defensive line coach Brentson Buckner. He played defensive tackle and end through his 11-year NFL career (1994-2005).

An absolutely true story here about Buckner for background:

Last summer Joe took a trip to Las Vegas and getting there was one of those nightmare traveling days from hell anyone who frequently flies has no doubt experienced. Anyway, Joe arrived in Vegas 10 hours later than expected. Joe was exhausted and just wanted a decent meal after checking into the posh Aria Resort and Casino.

So downstairs Joe went to the Aria Cafe. It was sparsely populated. Joe sat down and noticed a dude about three tables away (no one sitting in between) completely decked out in Cardinals gear. He looked familiar. He looked just like the Cardinals defensive line coach, Brentson Buckner.

It couldn’t be. Players and coaches in the NFL rarely wear team gear in public, much less on vacation. They want to be incognito.

Later, when the gentleman walked past Joe after his dinner, Joe said politely, “If I didn’t know any better I’d swear you are Brentson Buckner.” The man stopped, stared at Joe with a surprised look on his face and said, “I am Brentson Buckner!”

So Joe and Buckner chatted for a while. Buckner knew of this here website and Joe found out Buckner and Licht are close. He spoke about Licht glowingly from their days together in Arizona.

Now Joe isn’t the first person to think of Buckner as a candidate. Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times threw that name out there on Twitter yesterday morning, which sprung Joe’s memory of the chance Vegas encounter with Buckner.

Buckner shared with Joe one of his core beliefs: quitters are cowards and also treasonists to their teammates, possibly even criminals because they are essentially stealing food off the plates of teammates’ families and should be released immediately. Buckner told Joe quitters are vile people and he would never tolerate one.

(Boy, Buckner and offsides-jumping, belly shirt-wearing, practice-hating, kicker-heckling, tree-grinding , non-contact-football-loving, chicken-wings-grilling, playing-time-squawking, TV-cooking-star, half-sack Swaggy Baker would make a pair, wouldn’t they?)

Per, NFL.com, here’s data on how the Cardinals’ defensive line did under Buckner since 2013.

Year, sacks, rank
2017, 37, 17th.
2016, 48, 1st.
2015, 36, 20th.
2014, 35, 24th.
2013, 47, 6th.

This Buckner may be a guy to keep an eye on as the Bucs search for a new defensive line coach.

Why would a good coach waste one year in Tampa?
It’s called a paycheck and optimism. –Joe

  2. tmaxcon Says:

Cancer93 has quit on many more coaches than Baker but Joe’s selective memory rivals a politicians.

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Joe being from Illinois are you related to a Clinton? your selective memory of flat performances and players quiting on coaches is very Clintonesque.

  4. Brett Says:

No good coach is going to want to come here to potentially be one and done unless they have no other options.

Because unlike those living in denial and the delusional optimists I am always right…

  7. Defense Rules Says:

Aah yes, the plot thickens. But I’m obviously missing something Joe. Buckner coached last year for the Cardinals. Is he still under contract with the Cards? Has his contract expired? Was he fired? Inquiring minds need to know those little details. BTW, firing Hayes AFTER all the DLine coaching slots have already been filled is a crappy way for the Bucs to do business. Nothing new for them, but it’s still a crappy way to do business.

Hated this brotha with a passion – when he was part of that insanely talented– front 7 w/Carolina.

Aside from ludicrous statements you’ve made about Sapp & Brooks’ careers, I enjoy and am entertained by your takes. 13. Andrew Says:

At the end of the day, you have d-line talent or you don’t. We don’t. And no coach is going to fix that.

  14. Joeypoppems Says:

Joe is there any chance guys like Sapp or Simeon Rice could get looked at for the job? Spence says he learned a lot from working with Rice amd Sapp sure seemed passionate about the team based off his criticism of the defense.

    Im just curious.

  18. Joe Says:

As for why Buckner is available, folks may remember Bruce Arians retired and there was a coaching change in Phoenix.

Guessing Sapp would love to coach but not sure Bucs want him. Why? Read the recent SI story about him.

As for Rice, he would be a great edge rush coach. He’s got bigger fish to fry. He’s producing movies and bankrolling music artists.

everyone knows this staff will be canned after the season…..why take a DLine job when you could be the HC or DC for that team next year…..

Why would a coach come here for one year?…..Because he’ll likely sign a three year contract that is guaranteed. coming here for one year keeps him coaching but also gives him a paycheck for the next few years. Guys would much rather stay coaching then sit out and risk delaying future promotions to a coordinator position or even head coach. That cant move forward sitting on the sidelines…

Tmaxcon I completely second that! I don’t agree with your assessment of Brooks and Sapp but I love how you keep it real on Geraldine McSofty and you speak the truth about this repugnant, joke of an organization. Just keep it coming brother, there’s A LOT of us that feel the same way as you!

WE NEED YOU ON THAT WALL!!!! lol

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would completely agree with Brentson Buckner as the new DL coach.

That would be one hungry, angry defensive line!

“how has tmaxcon not been banned for trolling?”

Ah, one of the greatest mysteries of JBF. My personal theory is that either he is an advertiser (doubtful) or Joe just likes to laugh at his ridiculousness and our reactions.

  30. Joe Says:

    …last week?”

Wasn’t it 1-2 days ago? Or was I late to the party?

Each Sunday begins a new week. So since it is Monday and Jay Hayes was fired on Friday, yeah, that would be last week.

And yeah, that also means you are late to the party. 🙂

  31. tmaxcon Says:

let me be clear as players I have nothing but love for sapp and brooks. there time was best in bucs history, Unfortunately it was wasted by a 1 dimensional coach and a worthless gm who could not field even a high school offense. dungy and mckay wasted whyce’s hall of famers….

brooks and sapp were yesterday they have not helped this team win a meaningful game in 17 years. let them go. they are not part of the solution so move on. Matt Millen was a great LB and he ruined his legacy trying to stay involved. Brooks was a great lb from the past let it stay in the past before he follows the same path as millen. celebrate the past but STOP LIVING IN THE PAST!

more ex players embarrass themselves and destroy legacy’s trying to stay involved. brooks needs to keep running minor league football teams out of business and sapp needs to keep the low cost hookers in business. they can not help bucs any longer. move on.

My guess is that he’s been through a divorce, is paying massive child support/alimony and being forced to live in a run-down trailer in Saint Pete. Probably his greatest thing to look forward to is his kids reaching 18 to stop the child support.

It;s everyone else’s fault though, not his.

speaking the truth and accepting reality that this franchise is a joke with no hope for the future is accurate and hardly reason for being banned… you are just another one of the soft ones who can’t handle reality. GMC sucks, bucs suck and the glazers simply DO NOT CARE!!!! Hardly a recipe for turning around a franchise that has not won a single meaningful game in 16 years.

  35. tmaxcon Says:

no I am happily retired in the mountains of Colorado laughing at the optimists who actually think this joke of team can turn it around…. people that assume are always the ASSes in the conversation.

  36. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Tmax

Got no problem with you or your opinions. Im just curious tho. What happens if GMC is off the team and they are still in the basement for a couple years?

Do you have a list of guys that could be a problem or is it an “only time will tell” type of thing?

  37. University of Seffner Says:

Joe if Brenston Buckner becomes the Defensive Line Coach, your reward for predicting the future correctly should be having Dinner with Rachel Watson. After all, you’ve mentioned your thoughts about her in past articles…😉

  38. tmaxcon Says:

    Joeypoppems

although GMC is the number one reason the defense is soft and can’t hold a lead the bigger is the issue is the glazers refusing to give up control to a real football guy not a has been ex player or coach either. they refuse to spend the money in the right places to give the team the best possible chance to succeed.

teams take on the persona of their leaders and the bucs and glazers have taken on the persona of the crying clown who prefers to lose and comes out flat more than he produces.

to answer the question I would like to turn it around on you when the bucs win their first meaningful game in 16 years plus without him I will toast a jameson.

  39. BucFanFromOH Says:

There are just people that enjoy spewing hate anywhere they can. Just ignore tmaxcon, s/he isn’t going to change. Clearly this is the only enjoyment s/he gets each day, so let him/her have that. Well what exactly have they done/won with Gerldine on the roster??? NOT A DAMN THING! She’s a soft, worthless leader ( oops my bad, she’s already come out and said she doesn’t want to be a leader ) and I can’t wait for the day that she’s gone!

  44. Bucsfanman Says:

tmax and I agree on leadership. Leadership starts up top. This organization is, unfortunately, inept and apparently clueless as to how to build a team.
GMC has never been a leader and I don’t know why we keep expecting it of him. Our expectations do not equal the player. GMC is a good DT playing on a sh!t team. He’d probably get less flack if he just shut up and played football. Just shut up Gerald!

In other news 49’ers LB and 2017 1st round pick RUEBEN FOSTER just got arrested again … last time for illegal weed and this time for beating on his girlfriend and having an assault rifle … now THAT is a dude the NFL can make an example of and suspend 6-12 games while letting Jameis off in the uber thing as the only eye witness corroborates Jameis’ side of the story and no police report was filed or lawsuit was initiated and there is zero proof Jameis did anything wrong … unlike Foster.

    *******

  53. SteveK Says:

    TMax,

Keep it coming. Your tales are not without merit and are refreshing AF.

I am a little disappointed in the weak minded (sheep) posters that get their little itty bitty feelings hurt.

Newsflash: Schiano was/is right, we are a “laughingstock”.

Anyone who refuses to accept reality, and then points blame at those who keep it real can remove themselves from JBF.com.

Freedom of speech, and the “pursuit” of happiness for Bucs Fans should be made freely available to all. Enough with babies not being able to take REAL talk about their team.

  54. Pickgrin Says:

Yea – its too bad there’s not a “block” feature here – or perhaps a way we could vote certain commenters off the island…

I too find the timing of this firing curious. Surely you don’t fire a widely esteemed position coach with 15 years of NFL coaching experience for “bad results” without having a very solid replacement already lined up – right?

  55. DB55 Says:

Reading an article in TBT about Bucs talking to two year DC Ted Monachito for the d-line job. Had the second least sacks with 25 in front of the Bucs. Also mentioned Hayes’ and Monachito’s long history with Koetter from other teams. I hear it so often about the Bucs hiring or interviewing because they’ve spent time with Koetter. STOP IT!

  64. Bucsfanman Says:

DB55- Thanks for the summary. I can’t say I disagree. Who the heck cares if someone “disrespects you” on Twitter. If they aren’t man enough to say it to your face they are not a man. This is my biggest beef with GMC. If he would just shut up it wouldn’t be so bad. He comes off as a baby and it’s why some fans can’t look beyond it.

  65. Drew Says:

I suspect tmaxcon has an idea on the whereabouts of Pablo.

You act like that wasn’t Baker’s fault.

  71. DB55 Says:

I really can’t buy into the -baker jumped offsides – argument. 30 seconds left with no timeouts. McIceCream makes one play to jump on the fumble or stop cam from fumbling, picking it up, and running thru his gap then you have a win.

So please tell me in your infinite wisdom what does having heart mean to you and how has McIceCream demonstrated such actions?

  75. Brett Says:

The Bucs have not been able to develop Offensive Line Talent or D-Line talent. How does firing someone with Hayes’ resume/success/experience help? Firing someone for the sake of firing? Who will come in knowing everyone may be gone in a year if the Bucs don’t improve.

  78. Issic Haggins Says:

GMC is as good as any player numerous times a game but boy to think what he could have done with a coach that didn’t pamper him.

He has brained washed every coaching staff into coddling him and boy would it be great to see a coach that calls him out on film for quiting on plays, running away from plays to look good and not fighting through double teams . Just like the players at the pro bowl did ,that’s exactly what they did to his face , in his face, he just hasn’t really admitted it !! His mouth has admitted it but his in the game / full game effort ,his soul ,his on the field bad ass has NOT !!

Gerald the Man , The Beast could have 10 sacks and at least 60 tackles , hell probably 70 tackles but Gerald the like me premadonna will always get in the way and yes with out a doubt it affects the other players. No One wants to work harder to cover for a smarter or more talented individual who isn’t giving it their all and especially the ones that always want to take credit, get in the picture ,grab the microphone ,etc . How many peeps on here have had co workers, bosses or even family members that possess these traits , Do they make the room better, do they make you try harder ??

This is why GMC gets flack and he is the 100 percent the cause of it !! Guilty as charged !!

When a supposed leader fails to excel and the rest of the troops know it ,they will also fail to excel. So actually they start to excel to fail !!

  79. DB55 Says:

Did anyone see Jay Hayes cryptic tweet? Basically said that some people want to get stuff but not work for it. That’s a real bad synopsis but basically sounded like he was calling people out for not being willing to put in the work. Idk but ya should try to look it up.

Gmc will run any coach out of town that makes him work. I can’t imagine any other reason why Hayes of all the coaches would be fired. But then again wtfdik.
