Doug Martin talks life and football

Bucs fans are all familiar with Doug Martin’s troubles off and on the field.

Martin has those in his rearview mirror but he’s not pretending they’re fiction.

On the Buccaneers Radio Network this week, Martin took a deep question from a fan. Martin didn’t brush it off.

Bucs fan Scott: What have you learned about yourself and about life from your recent experience?

Doug Martin: About life? Just that, you know, there’s consequences to your actions. You’ve got to man-up and face the hard times and, you know, when you’re feeling low, when in those low times just keep your head up and be around people who are trying to keep you up. Just push through it and just deal with adversity. I definitely had to feel adversity. And right now I’m here on the other side and moving forward.

Despite what assorted readers here believe, Joe is rooting for Martin. That doesn’t mean Joe would bet on Martin having a successful season, but it’s great to hear he’s in a good place.

As for those who think Martin wasn’t used enough against the Patriots, Joe’s already written that Dirk Koetter said Martin was “gassed.”

Martin added that the game wore on him quickly.

“You can’t simulate a real, true game,” Martin said of his training during his month off. “The more the game went on, I could feel myself, ‘Like yeah, I’ve been out for four weeks.’ (Laughs) It’s very hard to simulate hits and all that stuff. I’m going to continue to get better and get in more football shape as time goes on.”

Get yourself back in shape Dougie. The run-game was truly noticeable when you were in. We can’t have Jameis throwing 40+ passes a game.

  2. RayJameisStadium Says:

Good for you Joe! No twisted statements on this one. Martin will make you proud.

  3. BucUtalkinBout Says:

Welcome back Doug…It’s a journey bro One-day-at a time we are pulling for you!! I know you gone get to 1100 this year I feel it!!

  4. Do it Says:

Doug made poor decisions. Don’t forget Alexander also was suspended for PEDs and he was forgiven without all the hate. Hope Doug learned from his mistakes because the Bucs need him to keep his head on straight.

  5. Pickgrin Says:

Congrats Doug – you are now getting paid like a top running back. Time to play like one consistently.

  6. Capt.Tim Says:

I hope that Martin comes back strong, Stays focused and motivated.
I hope he leads the league in rushing the next decade!
He is an extremely talented Running back.

  7. Maze Says:

85% chance the Joe’s would make horrendous running back coaches

  8. BFFL Says:

Koetter said parber was gassed during game 1 and hasn’t used him since.

  9. BFFL Says:

    ^Barber

I’m rooting for Doug but the Kwon comparison doesn’t work.
Kwon was using performance enhancing drugs, which as the term implies, was to enhance his performance on the field.
Doug on the other hand got popped for using Molly which although it’s a ton of fun, definitely did not do anything positive for his on field performance.

Both made bad, albeit different mistakes.

even tho he was gassed, you still could have used him as a decoy….run play action…the way he was running, the defense would’ve bit hard every time on play action….GO BUCS!!!

  14. MadMax Says:

Impressed with you so far Dougie! Keep your head up and play pissed off and hard.

Use him more Coach K!!! It was working!!

  15. dooshlarue Says:

Sorry for the triple post…..bad connection.

  16. BucUtalkinBout Says:

    @Doosh

Can you provide link to where it was confirmed that it was Molly? I thought I heard it was Adderall

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

Keep comin Doug. You cannot/will not be denied. I get this feeling he’s gonna have a breakout game against Arizona. His mind is right and his body is almost there. He ran like a man possessed in the Pats game. We will need that passion come Sunday.

  18. Pick6 Says:

interesting. i don’t know exactly what response i was hoping for but i was looking for something more. It sounds like what he learned is that is sucks to get caught and being suspended was a bummer. He doesn’t reflect to much on the choice, just on the punishment. I kinda hoped this experience would change him more profoundly than that, but selfishly all i really care about are no more suspensions and no more injuries. just hold it together for 16 games (yes i’m counting playoffs) and be the RB that won that big contract for at least one season

  19. Trubucfan22 Says:

Joe, you may be rooting for him to do good. But you are “not a fan of his”. (Remainder deleted for misrepresentation)
It’s amazing how you and others love to split hairs and ascribe motives to Joe. Joe could name multiple players on the Bucs every season that Joe would like replaced. Heck, even Derrick Brooks has said publicly that teams need to identify weeds on their rosters and get them out. Joe’s not calling Martin a weed, but yes, Joe cheers for Martin when he’s on the roster. Call that whatever you want.–Joe

  20. James Walker Says:

#22 will have a 1000 yard season in 2017. Quote me on it.

  21. SteelStudBuc Says:

The Kwon comparison does work because they were 6-6… Kwon suspension led to 4 straight losses. Don’t gimme that jive son.

  22. Trubucfan22 Says:

I do love to split hairs. And I know the Joe’s do to. Steve said it on his podcast. He is no fan of Doug Martin. It’s what he said. Don’t back track out of that now. Who’s backtracking? Have said that multiple times. Not a big fan of a few other guys, too. It’s a football thing, not a life thing. –Joe

Im just surprised that the Joe’s would still rather have Quizz Rodgers running ball instead of Martin. Joe just wants an effective running game.–Joe

It was only a glimpse but Martin showed more in 1 drive than Quizz showed all season. But you still can’t trust Martin? I don’t know what there is to trust or distrust. He’s talented and healthy, ride him till the wheels fall off. I’d much rather trust Martin than Quizz or sims or Barber. I’m mean come on, you went on for 5 minutes about Peyton barber on the podcast. And barely said a word about how well Martin did. A passing comment with no in depth analysis. I get that you won’t sugar coat stuff, and talk about what interests you. But we are dying to hear you talk up Martin.
Joe has written MANY articles since the Patriots game about Martin, praising his work. That’s just fact. Joe even has gone above and beyond trying to get the many people yelling that Martin should have had more work to understand that he wasn’t football-ready and to lay off Koetter on that. And then there’s this story you commented under, which further puts Martin in a strong light. –Joe

Maybe it will take a few game of solid play for you guys to open up. Idk. I love you guys, love the work you all put in. You know I’m just busting your balls right? You guys are always taking jabs at people in your articles, I figure I should give one back every once in a while. 😉

  23. Pryda...sec 147 Says:

    Oh dougie I missed u

  24. Trubucfan22 Says:

Writing about martin and praising him are 2 different things. I dont expect a love fest. But i can certainly tell in your writing that you are a little more reserved when it comes to martin. Don’t show him too much praise for his dominant performance. Instead talk about Barber not getting PT. Maybe im looking to close for it. Maybe i’ve only skimmed or missed the article that did actually discuss martin and how his performance will have on his fiture with the bucs, even if only for this season.

Like i said, you’re crazy if you think quizz should get the ball over Martin. Crazy i tell ya, Crazy!

  25. Captain Big Stick Says:

Good answer to the question Doug, I am sure many here can empathize with that type of self inflicted adversity.. I sure can. Good article Joe(s), anyone who consistently reads articles on this site know you have been more than fair to Martin since Thursday. I think Doug is about to explode though, he is playing for his contract now and we all know what that means 😀

  26. Birdman Says:

So proud to be considered an assorted reader… It’s an honor really 😂

  27. Crockett69 Says:

Man………. The Joe’s run a damn good website. It’s very informative on a daily basis and there is nothing but positive energy attempted to stir ones enthusiasm about the team and the direction we’re trying to go. You gotta love it! If you spill hate then you are not a true fan but a troll. Don’t be a troll. IMO if you don’t agree with something then don’t reply. I don’t dissect Joe’s columns word for word and neither should you. I don’t agree with every opinion either. After all, isn’t that true journalism? What I do appreciate is the news/info I get multiple times a day. Joe(s) write columns and shares their opinion, popular or unpopular. We are all Tampa Bay Bucs Fan’s (presumably) so throw a fellow Buc’s Fan a bone. My point is ….. build upon the ship from the crow’s nest to the rudder and don’t pull the plug on hard earned intel. Go Bucs!

Dude, you really need to work on your reading skills and your attitude, or just find a new website. –Joe
