Sackmeister Gerald McCoy

October 12th, 2015
Sack leader for defensive tackles.

Sack leader for defensive tackles.

After nursing a second mug of coffee this morning — yes, on Sunday nights, Joe works deep into the wee hours when the TV weather and traffic chicks begin Twittering on Monday mornings — Joe came across an interesting stat.

Though not a stat guy, Joe is certain this number will give several folks who work behind a microphone for a living indigestion.

Look who has the most sacks of any defensive tackle in the NFL! Why, it’s none other than Gerald McCoy, the same GMC radio types, both locally and nationally, scream is overrated.

GMC has 4.5 sacks, second overall in sacks and a half-sack away from tops in the NFL.

How can a guy be overrated when he is the best at his position? Someone has to explain this to Joe. So Tom Brady is overrated because he has more rings than any other quarterback playing the game today? Joe could go on with the ludicrous analogies.

It’s time for the radio heads to invent something more original. There are plenty of potshots to take at the Bucs. Throwing arrows at GMC just makes one look like a fool.

    GMC = Overated

  2. Gaytor Bait Says:

    Troll^

  3. Trubucfan22 Says:

Agreed joe. even with 1 working arm he has remained explosive. His first step is one of the fastest in the nfl. Great player.

  4. Buccfan37 Says:

Never said one negative word about GMC, ever. Or Martin, or Sims.

  5. DoNUTS Says:

GMC is a good player just not great. Yes, he is overrated but like many others.

Bucs were up by 14 at the time of the GMC sack…obvious passing situations for the Jags….lets put it in real perspective.

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

I notice there are some commenters missing after the Bucs win. The most negative it seems.

  7. John McKillop Says:

Anybody that thinks GMC is overrated is a foolish a-hole. McCoy was the 2nd highest rated d lineman every week behind only J.J Watt last year. Thinking this guy is no good or doesn’t have any dog in him is just assinine. All of you haters need to stop with this crap.

  8. DefenseRules Says:

GMC sets the pace for our entire defense. When he gets pressure on the QB and forces him to move, the rest of the DLine takes advantage nicely. GMC is the pacesetter.

Unfortunately for the Bucs, even GMC can’t do that on every play. Just physically impossible I think to take on double-teams play after play … and win. I’m surprised he holds up as well as he does. Let him play with an All-Pro DE (like Simeon Rice was) and I think that GMC would be even better than Sapp was.

  9. Buc1987 Says:

Where’s TheBucRealist at? Still in a funk trying to get over the Bucs win yesterday?

  10. 1nebuc Says:

Not sure where to rate him just know for a hundred million dollar contract we need to see him make more plays like yesterday in the fourth quarter. I think that is where the great ones are rated . The money downs and the whole fourth quarter.

  11. Buc1987 Says:

Warren Sapp spoiled many Buc fans.

That’s all I got for you.

  12. DrHoagy Says:

Where is the Bozo who wrote a couple of weeks ago that McCoy is soft, sits out with a paper cut?
Two sacks at the end of the game, i.e. he DELIVERED IN CRUNCH TIME!!!! With one arm no less.

  13. DB55 Says:

First of all Aaron Donald was leading the way as of yesterday morning and he doesn’t make 1mil a game. Second, this is the first game in 2 years where gmc has had a sack in the fourth much less in crunch time when it matters. Third, gmc does NOT get doubled and tripled team EVERY play I PROMISE just watch the film, it’s obvious. And on 99% of 3rd downs he’s Being blocked by 1 guard. Just get your fact straight.

With that said GMC has played his best two games in recent history in the last two weeks with a bum shoulder. So I salute you sir! That’s all we’ve been asking for, play thru pain, make plays when it matters and lead your team. Isn’t that what a captain is supposed to do?

Now if he could stop jumping offsides I’d be happier than a pig in ish.

  14. Hawaiian Buc Says:

There’s actually a clown claiming the sacks don’t matter because the offense was in an obvious passing situation!! Lmao!! Man it never amazes me how stupid some people can be. First people complain he doesn’t get enough sacks, and that disruptions mean nothing. Then he can’t get a sack in crunch time. Then everyone says he’s soft. Now it’s he doesn’t get enough for how much he makes. I didn’t realize you were signing his checks. Unbelievable, and embarrassing.

  15. StPeteBucsFan Says:

GMC has great talent! GMC is having a great year! GMC needs to put several years in a row like this together. Then he’ll have an HOF career. He’s just now hitting his peak, let’s see how far he takes it.

  16. DB55 Says:

I know real fans are happy with seeing GMCs pretty smile every week. As long as he’s picking people up and whipping the dirt off their Jerseys he’s A-OK in my book!!!

Then there’s the trolls that actually expect him to WIN games. Ungrateful, stupid, ignorant trolls!!!

What’s embarrassing is a 2-14 record and being outplayed by a rookie when you supposed to be ALL-WORLD.

  17. Patrick in VA Says:

Seems like there are a bunch of people that want to take in to consideration the situations that surround the plays that our guys make so they can discount the signifigance but then they just look at the box score to see what the players that our guys are compared to are doing. How many passing down sacks has Geno Adkins or JJ Watt gotten? Are you doing the adjustments for those guys to put them in to perspective as well or is it just our guys whose contributions are only relevant when they’re huge game changing plays?

  18. White Tiger Says:

I’m very happy the Jags were susceptible to the run…but I don’t take anything away from this game. It was the Jags people…

The defense was stout and Doug Martin was able to get it done.

  19. Espo Says:

I’m happy with Mike Evans, sans his recent drops, but I’d be ecstatic if we had drafted Aaron Donald. He and GMC would be unstoppable.

  20. Pick6 Says:

joe, if you really want to be impressed look at has sacks-per-game rate going all the way back to midseason of schiano’s final year. he doesn’t show up all over the film like sapp in his prime, but the sack rate is absolutely sapp-like. GMC may be approaching the point where so many people are crying about him being overrated that he is actually now quite underrated. you associate sack rates like that with the JJ Watt’s of the world or an elite edge rusher

  21. Bucfan77 Says:

Defense Rule you sound ridiculous GMC could be better than Sapp. GMC may get doubled on most plays but Sapp got doubled every, but big difference Sapp was so fast and deceptive ly strong the double team hardly ever worked, when I see GMC have one year Sapp had a 10plus sack year then we talk about comparing not being better but comparison only.GMC is good not great yet,Sapp is a H.o.f dude cmon

  22. feelthepewterpower Says:

Brady is overrated due to cheating….

  23. tampa2ali Says:

Since GMC has entered the league there has not been a defensive tackle who has more sacks than him. If thats over rated than I guess he’s overrated. But from the constant double and triple team he face, obviously opposing coaches dont feel that he is overrated…

BTW …. no one is forcing anyone to be a buc fan, and if u dont like the stars on the team u must not like the team… plus there’s 31 more teams pick one

  24. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Brady is overrated due to cheating….”

    ——-

If we can get 4 Super Bowls by cheating, sign me up for that please.

  25. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Ndamukong Suh, who many here claim is better than McCoy…has zero sacks and fewer tackles.

McCoy is on pace for 15-16 sacks this year. He’s already halfway to his best year so far…and we only just started the second quarter of the season.

I hope he can repeat this next year…after we get a good defensive draft behind us. He’s only got 2-4 good years left in him before he’ll start declining. Then we’re going to have to look for his replacement.

The good news is we’ll have the rest of the defense done long before then.

  26. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Buccfan37

Those negative commenters will show up and continue their rants. I tend to avoid the site right after a loss because I get tired of the whining. I’m sure the opposite applies to them.

  27. tampa2ali Says:

    @ Bucfan77

Comparing GMC to Sapp is unfair due to many reasons. First the nfl is different now, u can’t hit qb the same way u have specific target area now. Second the supporting cast is totally different we had at least three hall of famers with sapp , Brooks, and barber.. plus we had simeon rice , john lynch , etc with monte kiffin calling the defensive…. Lovie is not monte kiffin… I’m not saying gmc is just as good as Sapp , im just saying the comparison is unfair… But GMC is top 3 defensive tackle in the league and thats not just my view thats the league’s view

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I always find it funny how so many people on this site hate GMC and always proclaim Suh to be some dominant DT. Fact is, Suh’s only double digit sack season was his rookie year. Suh has only one move – a bull rush. Suh has led Miami to one sack as an entire team, none of which are from Suh. The only DT that you could even argue is better than McCoy would be Atkins, but it would still be a silly argument. Every single person I know that is a fan of another team always raves about McCoy and how much they’d love to have him on their team. Meanwhile in Tampa our stupid fans want to chase him off and call him overrated, soft, and nothing special. SMDH.

D-tackles don’t win games by themselves. JJ Watt is maybe the best defensive player I’ve ever seen and exactly how many playoff games has he been to? Sapp is the greatest of all time but no one can argue that our current defense is even in the same ballpark as the defenses we had under Sapp. I fail to see how Sapp would have prevented our offense to stop putting 12 guys on the field, or to stop committing other foolish penalties. I’m pretty sure Sapp wouldn’t make 50 year old Tim Jennings into a 25 year old Tim Jennings. There are so many holes on our team surrounding our great players. Way too many to overcome. The only position that can overcome all those holes is quarterback, and unfortunately he’s not at that point yet. Hopefully he’ll get there soon.

  29. StevieJanowski Says:

Joe- GMC is the defacto scapegoat when we can’t stop the run or generate a consistent pass rush. Couple that with his style of play– helping people off the ground, smiling, hugging and embracing people after the game– and people are even quicker to criticize him.

When you take a step back and look at the situation, it’s clear that Gerald is a warrior and difference maker on the defense.

  30. D-Rome Says:

It’s time for the radio heads to invent something more original. There are plenty of potshots to take at the Bucs. Throwing arrows at GMC just makes one look like a fool.

Not just radio heads but there are other bloggers out there who look at GMCs sack numbers and do silly things like break down their sack numbers in the 4th quarter to prove their point that he’s allegedly not elite.

GMC had two sacks in the 4th quarter.

Take THAT James “Jim” W. Gordon!

  31. Hawaiian Buc Says:

There may never be another Warren Sapp. There may never be another Derrick Brooks. Those comparisons need to stop. But we’ve got a couple pretty damn good 2.0 versions of those two. Instead of dwelling in the past and saying how they aren’t Sapp and Brooks, appreciate what we have, because I guaran-damn-tee you 31 other NFL teams would love to have those guys. Stop thinking you have some amazing football talent evaluation skills and can recognize someone is overrated, because I promise you you don’t and you can’t. There’s a reason they are so well respected and have had the honors they have had, and it sure as hell isn’t because they play for a nobody-gives-a-damn-about-us-team like the Bucs. They’ve earned those Pro Bowls and All-Pro honors. Again, I’m going to go with the opinions of coaches, scouts, players, and writers over yours (and Ian Beckles). But that’s just me.

  32. Tiny Tim Says:

What some fans like me feel is McCoy disappears for most of the game. It does not mean he is not a “good” player. It just means he is not “great.” There were games where sapp did not get a sack, but he had 5 hits on the qb which resulted in at least one INT due to a wounded duck being thrown, he would also have 3 tackles for a loss and a forced fumbled which means he lived in the backfield. McCoy getting an occasional sack does not mean he lives in the backfield like John Randle or Sapp or Watt because he does not. Thats the difference between great and good.

  33. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @TinyTim,

So by your argument, who in today’s NFL is “great” at the DT position? What player “lives in the backfield” as a DT? What DT has 5 hits a game on a QB? And if you answer JJ Watt, your opinion is truly worthless, because he’s not a DT. If your answer is no one, than you are perhaps confusing “great” with “all-time great”.

In today’s NFL, there is a greater emphasis on protecting the QB’s. Not just from the officials, but from the standpoint of how teams block for the QB. These offensive lineman are bread to pass protect, unlike lineman of yesteryear. Being a good run blocker is almost an afterthought in today’s game, where it was probably the most important thing before aside from maybe a left tackle. Also, I would argue it is much easier to avoid sacks today because most teams don’t employ too many deep drops (as they did in Sapp’s day). How many times did you see teams go 5-wide in the 90s and early 2000s? Very rarely is the answer. How many more 3 step drops do teams use now versus back then? Considerably more is the answer. How many teams ran read option, which greatly slows down the pass rush? The answer is zero. The game is much more wide open than ever before, and the ball is out much quicker than ever before. That can’t even be argued. Point is, it’s a very different game and while I’m not saying McCoy is Sapp (because he’s not), you just can’t fairly compare players from different eras. The game has evolved far too much.

  34. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

GMC is terrific. Show me one play that he “took off”. Sapp took most of a season off in 98. Or maybe he ate most of that season.

  35. Pick6 Says:

if GMC is not an impact player or a great DT, there are no impact\great DTs in the league right now. he has certainly passed Ndamukong Suh and proven me wrong in the process. Aaron Donald, Geno Atkins, and JJ Watt are the only interior DL that are in arguably McCoy’s neighborhood, and even if one is slightly better, none is significantly better. Even the DPOY in a given year will fail to take over games from time to time, especially games like many of our recent ones where we are down multiple TDs and getting obliterated in Time of Possession due to offenses that have been allergic to first downs. p.s. he’s playing with an obvious shoulder injury and refused to come out even when we were getting blown out by Carolina. not smart but indicative of a ton of heart and commitment to this team

  36. Matt Says:

I hope he gets his 10.5 more sacks this year . I want too see him on offense asap. We need a huge game from him where he has like 3-4 sacks . That should help the cause and I say start Howard jones at DE . Why not he did get 2 sacks ? Who cares if it was the Jaguars he still earned it fair and square . Maybe next game he gets another 2 sacks vs Washington .

  37. Pick6 Says:

@Matt, a 3 sack game will only add fuel to the criticism. after all, if he can get 3 in one game why can’t that lazy, soft, inconsistent bum get 48 sacks in a year?

  38. Tiny Tim Says:

I am not sure if this posted three times or if Joe is blocking my post….

@ Hawaiian Buc and who ever else is confused with the difference between good and great

I can care less about how other DTs in this era is playing. I am not going to grade these DTs on a curve. Before there was Sapp, there was Randle. Before there was Randle, there was Reggie White who played both DT and DE like Watt does. Before Reggie white, there was Randy White from the cowboys. Before white there was Mean Joe Green. These players constantly caused havoc. Let me try to make it clearer for you. Just because the clippers decided to pay DeAndre Jordan a max contract, I am not going to confuse him with Jabbar, Chamberlain, Olajuwon, Robinson, Shaq etc. Jordan is good, but not a great center period.

And to your point about different era ie 5 man routes and quick drops…………the greats adapt to the times whether its getting bigger, stronger, faster, no more stickem, or the dreaded head slap by Deacon Jones. They found a way to be great. If Watt can do it, then so can McCoy and no I am not going to grade him on a curve. If Revis can be great in this pass happy league where he is not able to touch and grab the best WRs like Deion Sanders could then McCoy can find a way to dominate his opponent the majority of the game as well. If Polamolu who does not have great cover skills can find a way to be great in this pass happy league, then so can McCoy. Here is a measuring stick for you….let me know when McCoy is in the discussion for DPOY let alone if he will ever win one. The “greats” all have won DPOY at least once and found their name in the conversation a couple of times.

  39. tiny tim Says:

    @ joe

Why aren’t my post coming through from my pc? Are you blocking me?

  40. Pickgrin Says:

2 sacks in the 4th quarter. Where’s the GMC bashers? GMC articles here on JBF are usually full of uncomplimentary comments from a select few who represent the vocal minority. I know the Animosity throwers will be back in full force relatively soon – but was glad to see Gerald shut yall up for at least one game.

Good game McCoy. Take it easy for the next dozen days and get that shoulder healed.

    Thanks for explaining that coach!!!

  43. Warthog Says:

Bucs fans are just spoilt by Sapp. After years of watching one of the greatest of all time, Bucs fans don’t see McCoy for what he is – a great top tier D-tackle. Stop mentally comparing him to a guy who comes along once in a generation and realise McCoy does what he does as well as anyone currently in the league.

  44. "that guy" Says:

I was never a gmc hater, but i did call him out once or twice on inconsistent play. good to see him producing the way someone drafted that high at his position should. go bucs

  45. lowlife Says:

If your argument against where he is hypothetically rated is that he isn’t winning games for his team then Watt and Arnold are also overrated on your very sophisticated internet commenter metric.

  46. bucs4life Says:

WHAT A JOKE GMC IS THE BEST DT IN THE GAME BY FAR EVEN THE PLAYERS WOULD SAY SO EXPECIALLY THE O-LINEMAN WHO HAVE TO DOUBLE AND TRIPLE HIM EVERY PLAY AND SAPP WOULD BE ASHAMED OF THESE COMMENTS CAUSE HE THINKS HES A FREAK OF NATURE AND THE BEST DT IN THE GAME

  47. bucs4life Says:
