The Blowback Has Begun

March 6th, 2015
The blowback from mostly positive national Jameis Winston coverage recently has begun.

The blowback from positive national Jameis Winston coverage has begun.

Eight more weeks to go until the NFL draft. Free agency the next six days or so will be a blissful respite in the draft chatter.

There is not much more to write now about the draft. Teams have scouted players for months if not years.

Players are done with their college seasons. They have already gone through the all-star games and the NFL Scouting Combine, not to mention by now countless initial interviews with teams.

So with eight weeks to go, one can only harvest so much new draft content. But there are many sports television and radio networks — one TV network devoted solely to the NFL — and dozens of newspapers and hundreds of blogs that demand daily NFL content.

It is in this vein that Joe’s good friend, the lord of TheBigLead.com, Jason McIntyre, stated there were will soon be a blowback of negative Jameis Winston coverage.

Hosannas being thrown Winston’s way for his passing at the combine, McIntyre said, and several reports of him acing his whiteboard tests in NFL interviews will turn against him. The main reason would be media refusal to write/discuss the same things over and over..

Joe read how Greg Cosell of NFL Films is beginning to sour on Winston. Yesterday, on a podcast with Ross Tucker of NBC Sports and SiriusXM NFL Radio fame, Cosell had serious reservations about Winston. However Cosell, who Joe admires a great deal, on the very same Ross Tucker podcast last week, had favorable things to say about Winston, though his words were a bit guarded.

What the hell changed in a week?

Winston’s gametape surely didn’t change. That’s all in the books; has been for months. Hasn’t played any games since Jan. 1. Combine work is all tucked away; has been for a couple of weeks.

What does this tell Joe? Aside from the April start of spring OTA practices, there is no more of a deader period in the NFL than the six or so weeks after the free agent frenzy dies down until the draft begins. And if poeple televise/broadcast/write the same thing day after day, week after week for two months, they will kill their audiences.

The press must sell newspapers. No news sells like bad news. It will be all static and quite annoying, like polls leading up to an election.

Just ignore it joe and don’t give it any legs by reprinting it.

  2. Nybucsfan Says:

@ Joe, do you think his throwing motion is good? Do think he uses good judgment in games and none of the int’s where his falt? Not in the underwear Olympics in real games.

  3. Beeric Says:

Maybe Joe can teach them how to fill half an article with a long list of adjectives / history about the subject….I jest I jest. Please tell me you’ll drop the negative laundry list of Jameis when they draft him though. I want to forget about that if he’s the face of the franchise.

  4. Nybucsfan Says:

@joe, is it easier to change your throwing motion than to learn a five step drop? I mean they are right look how easy it was for tebow to change his throwing motion

  5. Cody Says:

And with the 1st pick of the 2015 NFL Draft the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Jameis Winston – QB Florida State…

  6. Tony Says:

I think people forget how often he threw into triple coverage. Someone can understands concepts like a savant but processing that information when bullets are flying is completely different.

  7. mikep4bucs Says:

Jameis = Byron Leftwich (on field). Makes all throws but winds up. Bucs are putting up smoke screen, don’t believe the hype.

  8. MTM Says:

Interesting that analysist are now talking about Winston’s long throwing motion. Just disregard all the picks that he has thrown. Welcome your next bust Tampa Bay.

  9. Bucnut2 Says:

Maybe as people really dig in they are finding he is NOT that much more nfl ready than mariota. Maybe we’ve been sold a bill of goods. I’ve said all along if Winston played at Ohio state we would be begging for mariota. Lots of hometown bias in this analysis.

  10. Espo Says:

Yep a smoke screen to trick someone into trading in front of us to snatch him. Sounds legit.

Don’t fall for the fool’s gold L+L. Draft to improve the ballclub, not to satisfy the fanbase. Have some insight.

Trade down for Cleveland’s 12th and 19th pick + 2nd rounder for 2015 + 1st rounder for next season. They want Mariota bad after the Johnny Rehab fiasco and will be willing to mortgage the farm.

Select Brandon Scherff (bluechip Logan Mankins type guard prospect from Iowa) with 12th pick in 2015 draft.

Select Alvin Dupree (bluechip Demarcus Ware type DE/ 3-4 OLB prospect from Kentucky) with 19th pick in 2015 draft.

Select Eric Kendricks (bluechip Bobby Wagner type MLB prospect from UCLA) with 43rd pick in 2015 draft.

Select Jared Goff (bluechip Aaron Rodgers type QB prospect from California) with Cleveland’s 1st round pick in 2016 draft. Threw for 4000 yards, 35 tds and just 7 picks for a putrid Cal team in 2014. Lord knows what he would’ve done playing for Jimbo or Helfrich, surrounded by NFL prospects.

Et voila just turned 1 pick into 4 solid starters in 4 areas of need. Pass rush, OL, linebacking crew, QB of the future all sorted.

  13. Broy34 Says:

God the fools never seem to go away. People say “doesn’t stop you from writing 3-4 Jameis articles….” Ya moron he’s gonna be the franchise QB for a 40 year old team who hasn’t had one in that time span. Not to mention the same losers post the same negativity every single time which brings out the defendants of his majesty. The best part is when people even type the name Glennon and then commit the sin of attaching cannon to his name

  14. 1Gr8Buc Says:

    SkyLine Crew for the win.

  15. Phil Says:

The Bucs could have stopped all that by signing Winston to a contract when he was at One Buc Palace.

  16. tval Says:

His motion is better than lucks..thats a fact! You sore gators are hysterical. You say, “he was only on a great team” with 40td/10int, how was that motion? but vs better defenses this season and with less experienced(3 or 4 seasons worth) skill players its “oh my god, he threw some interceptions” nevermind 4 were in the week of his coc hearing and 7 or 8 were bad drops/cutoff routes that resulted in ints..you guys are garbage talent evaluators.. now having so much to go on comparing spread system vs pocket qbs, really? Mariotas projected success is entirely without precedent. this argument makes me feel dumber everyday..you think tampa isnt smarter than you morons looking at these ints? How about mariotas skewed #’s in awful conference?? He throws 2 ints all season and giftwraps suspect fsu d 2 in the 1st half when he sees oz of pressure? Come on, guys..really dumb..you are either lying because you are jealous and/or sad your team is drafting jameis, or you just know that little..save the response, im out. Just come to grips and itll be okay alot sooner 🙂

  17. Skyline Crew Says:

    Broy,

You don’t know he is going to be our QB. What if we do draft him and he is a bust? Joe is going to look even worse than when he went all Manziel last year. It is a very strong possibility they draft Mariota. Then you Homers will look stupid.

  18. LutzBuczFan Says:

What does Mike Glennon’s brother think of Winston?

  19. Bucfan4life Says:

Lol @ jigglypuff! Your post makes it sounds like we can solve everything by trading with Cleveland and taking Goff next year. For what it’s worth, I don’t want to pass on the top 2 QBs in this draft for a guy who is currently projected to be the 5th best QB in next years draft. Yeah, that’s definitely the way to go! Good Lord man!

  20. tval Says:

@ skyline. you may also show yourself a good eye for talent and judge of character, while others are made to look the fool. Hes trying to soften the blow. Its inevitable but some are in denial..its fine..dont say joe didnt tell ya so 🙂 mariota supporters are soon to join the ‘draft leaf’ brigade of former experts..

  21. Josh P Says:

    @Nybucsfan

Winston changed his throwing motion in just the 5 weeks he was with George Whitfield. One less thing he has to worry about in camp. So yes you can change your throwing motion.

  22. Barry Says:

Regardless of any outside opinions, Bucs going do what they want to. Still in serious play for the Bucs; L.Williams and Philadelphia trade. IMO this is the order of what the Bucs might do: L.Williams is the best player in the draft, No?

    1)Mariota
    2)Trade out
    3)L.Williams
    4)The Creep

If Bucs don’t announce Winston as their pick in the next 2 weeks, then he won’t be. Would you agree Joe?

  24. Broy34 Says:

Hey jogglypuff. When we r in the playoffs with Jameis I’ll be reminding you that you want us to trade down for Lineman and draft JARED GOFF. thank heavens hat you people have zero part in decision making. If you presented that idea to the glazers as gM you would be fired then shot. Thanks for making my day with that comedy

  25. P'cola Buc Says:

This is kinda reminding me of what happened to Bridgewater last year. Heralded as the number one pick but then the negative press started and he dropped significantly in the draft. He still ended-up being the best rookie QB last year.

  26. chris Says:

He kind of looks like Michael Myers from Halloween in this pic.

  27. robert 9 Says:

there’s a reason jimbo aint getting any calls, and i would suspect the trade up offers for mariota are greater than that for JW. who have we heard that desperately wants to moved up for JW?

  28. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Josh P

So did Tebow, but come game time he reverted back to the same motion. We won’t know until he actually plays if it is fixed or not.

  29. Jigglypuff Says:

    @Bucfan4life

Who cares about media projections ? Like seriously ? Where was Aaron Donald rated prior to his last season at Pitt ? Where was Lavonte David rated prior to his last season at Nebraska ? Where was Russell Wilson rated prior to his first season at Wisconsin ?

Good lord man, it’s not about projections now. But about what those players will become. Goff gets underrated because he plays for a losing program, not for a college playoff team. But if you study his skillset in isolation, he’s easily the best QB prospect since Luck.

You don’t have to believe me now. But it’ll be clear to see in 5 seasons. Look at his supporting cast and then look at his production. 7:1 TD to int ratio in his true sophomore season and 4000 yards with scrubs all around him, torched Oregon to the tune of 41 points with hobos at WR, 30 vs USC that had Leonard Williams, Sua Cravens, Hayes Pullard etc.

    @Broy34

Yeah ok. Even if they draft JW, nothing against him mind, playoffs are a couple of seasons away with the state of the OL, the pass rush, the secondary and most of all – depth to handle a long season. Doesn’t stop you from chatting turd though. Might just be me, but I’d rather have 4 top quality prospects than 1 top quality prospect.

Who’d you rather have – Just Ben Roethlisberger (Winston’s ideal comp) or a prospect rated as highly as Mankins when he was coming out of Fresno + a prospect rated as highly as Ware when he was coming out of Troy + a prospect rated as highly as Wagner when he was coming out of Utah State + a QB prospect who has erased Rodgers from Cal’s record books and has started since his true freshman season.

You know what ? Don’t answer that. I don’t care about the opinions of myopic buffoons who think just the #1 overall pick solves everything and propels the team into the playoffs without a requisite supporting cast.

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I appreaciate Joe’s passion for Winston and he takes a risk by being so lopsided with his articles…..but Joe knows that it could go either way.
In an earlier article Joe said…when it comes to who will be chosen “I don’t have a clue”….I suspect he would still answer the same.

I appreciate the inclusion of both positive Mariota & negative Winston articles as we draw closer to the draft. They will better prepare us for the choice.

I think the decision beteen the two is much closer than many think…and you are kidding yourself if you think either one is a “slam-dunk”

  31. P'cola Buc Says:

The Jets I believe have an eye on Winston. If he gets by Tampa and Tennessee I believe that’s where he might end up.

  32. gotbbucs Says:

The commissioner has asked teams at the top of the draft to not reveal their picks before the actual draft night so stop with this notion that they are just going to sign him and start developing him.

  33. ADown88 Says:

This throwing motion stuff is a bunch of bs. The only time he has “poor throwing motion” is when he is improvising because of pressure or skewed throwing lanes. Aaron Rogers is the king of this and that is why he is so great. The fact that someone cant contort their arm to make the throw, or throw accurately off of their back foot is a positive, not a negative.

Not even the same comparison… Tebow’s throwing motion even affected him in college.. Winstons, far from it. Winston could get away with the same motion he had in college and be successful.. i.e. Philip Rivers..

  39. bucs4lyfe Says:

is there any mariotta news out there or is it just he’s to boring uninteresting to write about…the fact that Winston is getting all this publicity good and bad means he’s the best quarterback in the draft even if they weren’t saying it which they are we’d still know it because of all the attention. the draft boards still wont change unless Winston does something dumb which honestly he should just leave the country for two months lol. the insiders reporting like adam shefter they get all the news so until he starts tweeting out something about bucs and mariotta everything you hear at this point is non sense

  40. Josh P Says:

  41. ADown88 Says:

For instance, NFL Network tweeted last night, “Should the Titans draft Mariota, L. Williams or Trade down?” They don’t even mention Winston because they believe (or know) that he will already be off the board.

If you read Jets boards, most hate the idea of Mariota and many only want a QB if somehow Jameis falls. People think that it’s just because we are in Florida that people want Jameis, but I don’t think that’s correct at all. Of course, you still have your fair-weather football fans that only know the Jameis headlines and are just uninformed haters. That’s inevitable across the nation.

One thing that L&L have garnered from this OBSESSION with the QB and the #1 overall draft pick is far less scrutiny of their other moves.

We’ve certainly kvetched about their horrible FA decisions last year, and seen a few articles about the remaining holes on this team, QB has certainly sucked the oxygen out of the rest of the coverage.

Here is something that interests me. I wonder how the Bucs coaching staff feels about Omemah, Pamphile and Edwards. Did any of the young players show ANY promise? Hard for the average fan to think too highly of these three when Garrett Gilkey is getting playing time ahead of them at any position!!

  52. bucs4lyfe Says:

how about this….cousins and Collins were supposed to be the veterans of the bunch and played horribly and on the level of garrett gilkey. as a GM it shouldn’t be too hard to move on from those guys but omameh, Pamphile and Edwards if anything those guys are probably eligible for the practice squad being they were rookies last year and it’s silly to give up on any player after one season, my only proof is those guys aren’t going anywhere…..Myron lewis

they can make the jump and there is room for improvement we just don’t know what they will do and considering how unstable our offensive situation was last year I think a lot of people like logan mankins and EDS are going to get somewhat of a pass also

nope neither…I don’t care for your posts or your opinion. but I do know your gonna be one of the fans pissing and whining about Winston if he’s drafted but me I simply want wins and an entertaining offense. honestly im fine with mariotta or Winston because both are better than glennon day one of training camp even and how do I know that? glennon was horrible his first year but people thought he was actually good because he threw accurate checkdowns even though he couldn’t hit a sideline seem pass to save his own life. he will never even be on the level of freeman but hey people thought we had some kind of franchise quarterback after his rookie season and now coming into year 3 lol anyway do I think Winston or mariotta could give the fans that kind of hope yep which is why this pick doesn’t even matter to me…..even if they trade down I know they are picking a quarterback

  60. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Joe, clearly, these media guys watched only 1-3 games of Winston and Mariota up until now. As the draft draws closer, they’ll be watching more games and picking both apart.

And as that happens, the consensus will turn to favor Mariota, because he actually IS the better quarterback.

As I watched 18 games of each of them, I was trying hard to find pros and cons on both. And once I did, I watched for continuity in those area as well.

    Here’s an example:

In Bucs games, last year for instance, how many fast moving offenses did our defense face, and WRs kept getting wide open (especially in the middle)?

Did the QBs we faced have media guys or fans say the opposing QB wasn’t any good because his WRs were always open? No. That is how silly it sounds when people say that of Mariota.

The offenses that hurt us the most last year (really the last few years) were the fast paced ones. That’s what Mariota brings.

Winston, however, needs time for plays to develop. His release time is only slightly better than Mike Glennons, and his throwing motion is worse (along with his mechanics). His pocket awareness is not even that good.

Break down the tape, and that’s what people will see. Up until now, the media is going by opinions based on the things they hear from others. As more and more actually look at the tape, they’ll see his faults.

Of course, you cannot tell that to FSU fans…how call everyone that does not want him in Tampa a hater.

    Simply put…Mariota is better.

But controversy makes for better ratings on TV and radio.

Philip Rivers is a mess mechanically. Tell Joe you wouldn’t crawl on all fours to have him as a quarterback.

  77. Joe Says:

The Bucs could have stopped all that by signing Winston to a contract when he was at One Buc Palace.

Know where you are going, but until drafted a team cannot sign a player. They could, however, reached a verbal agreement on a contract. But let’s be real, these things take weeks to negotiate.

  78. Joe Says:

Where was Lavonte David rated prior to his last season at Nebraska ?

Joe predicted in December before that draft that the Bucs draft Lavonte David in the third round. The Bucs, in fact, traded up from the third round to draft him. It’s all in Joe’s free archives.

  79. Joe Says:

I appreaciate Joe’s passion for Winston and he takes a risk by being so lopsided with his articles…..but Joe knows that it could go either way.

True. Joe wouldn’t be shocked if Lovie didn’t draft a quarterback. Of course, he very well may be out of a job at the end of the year, too.

  80. Joe Says:

Did the QBs we faced have media guys or fans say the opposing QB wasn’t any good because his WRs were always open? No. That is how silly it sounds when people say that of Mariota.

Don’t know about “media guys” but folks who work in the NFL have told Joe this. Many. Plural.

  81. Joe Says:

Winston articles generate the clicks…If you guys are tired of them then quit responding to them.”

Joe writes about what interests Joe. And this philosophy, clearly, has worked.

Of course, Joe could go dark for weeks at a time. Or he could thrill all of you and write about blocking schemes. Zzzzzzzz. Yeah, and Joe would be looking for work like too many Americans.

People like quarterbacks (well, except for the faction of Woody Hayes/Bucs fans) and this is a landmark decision for this franchise. To ignore it would be grossly irresponsible.

As always, if you don’t like a story, no one is putting a gun to your head to read it. This is not a two-bit high school site where you are required to read about Valley Forge and write a book report.

NFL rules permit the signing of the #1 overall pick early….that is the only exception

    @Skyline

“So did Tebow, but come game time he reverted back to the same motion. We won’t know until he actually plays if it is fixed or not.”

Not even the same comparison… Tebow’s throwing motion even affected him in college.. Winstons, far from it. Winston could get away with the same motion he had in college and be successful.. i.e. Philip Rivers..

I disagree, I think besides the fact that he has problems with reading underneath coverage his throwing motion accounted for some of his interceptions because it isn’t fast enough. His little hitch gives a LB/CB/S just enough time to get a jump.

“Teams can also agree to a contract with a draft-eligible player before the draft itself starts. They can only do this if they have the first overall pick,”

  85. Skyline Crew Says:

You can sign the #1 pick early, but there isn’t really a need to now a days because there are virtually no negotiations anymore. It is a set price and it is what it is.

Maybe he just looked at the tape more closely than before.

  87. JFF Says:

Joe doesn’t break down game film so he doesn’t understand how evaluations can change over the course of studying 27 games. No surprise there. Joe is not gonna spend dozens of hours grinding tape when he’s busy grinding his hand in his pants over Winston dressed in Bucs gear.

Maybe he just looked at the tape more closely than before.

Then maybe he should do a full eval before commenting…Like Joe said, he hasn’t played a game since Jan. 1… and he reported he was going to the NFL about 2 weeks after.. How long does it take one of the so called Elite evaluators to scout one of the top 2 rated QB in the up coming draft. If Mariota is so much better as some of you guys believe, why isn’t his naming oozing out of the TV’s the way Winstons is?? They all know who the better prospect is but if you can make it seem a lot closer you generate interest which puts dollars in the pockets of the TV exec..

Lets not read to much into all of these evaluation good or bad for either of these players… Just watch the tape and come up with your own conclusion..If that take you to Mariota then he’s your guy. But don’t quote analyst who speak out of both sides of their mouth..

This site name should be changed to JoeNolesFan.com. And no I’m not a Gator fan or any other college team. I could care less about watching 19 year old kids playing football. NFL is where it’s at for me, so I had no hate towards FSU. After reading the articles with extreme bias and FSU honks comments the last few months I think I officially can’t stand Noles fan. It’s pretty pathetic when you see the ignorance of the majority of their fan base. Talk about having blinders on. Now I’m seeing post referring to him as God… Really??? Get a life and get off his jock! Remember most of you are men… at least on your drivers license if nothing else. When you are a grown man heaping such praise for thief, rapist, and a general knuckle head, what does that say about you?

You don’t know he is going to be our QB. What if we do draft him and he is a bust? Joe is going to look even worse than when he went all Manziel last year. It is a very strong possibility they draft Mariota. Then you Homers will look stupid.

And how do you know that MM won’t be a bust? Duh. Stupid.
