The “Silent Rivalry”

February 29th, 2016
A "silent rivalry."

A “silent rivalry.”

Many Bucs fans believe Tampa Bay should draft a cornerback in the first round. Joe also knows a lot of fans are into the TV show called the “combine.” (It is painfully boring programming and Joe will not watch.)

Joe’s Twitter timeline is loaded today with cornerbacks chatter, so Joe wanted to share the following:

Joe can pretty much tell who is a Florida fan and who is a Florida State fan when they lobby for the Bucs to draft Vernon Hargreaves or Jalen Ramsey, cornerbacks expected to go high in the first round.

When speaking Saturday on the final day of the NFL Scouting Combine (again, Joe doesn’t count the TV show), the classy Hargreaves was asked about Ramsey and whether the in-state foes have a side competition of sorts to see who goes first in the draft.

Hargreaves smiled and admitted the two studs have what Hargreaves referred to as, “a silent rivalry.”

“It’s great,” Hargreaves said. “We don’t really talk about it when we see each other but we see the stuff. … He wants to be first, I want to be first. I’m going to say I’m the best, he’s going to say he’s the best. That’s what football is about and we’re going to go to work on Monday.”

That’s cool. The two could be mouthing off at each other, but it seems like the duo have great respect for each other and, indirectly, motivate each other to be the best.

Joe admits to being won over by Hargreaves, who comes across as really intelligent and classy, sort of like a young Ronde Barber.

    Good Kid

    Joe’s

The L.A Rams are reportedly going to pass on Janoris Jenkins. Do you think the BUCS will go after him?

  2. mixxx31 Says:

    LUVMYBUCS,

Janoris Jenkins can straight up ball! I would love to see him in a Bucs uniform.

  3. Chyno1 Says:

Jalen Ramsey just killed his combine! No way Hargreaves goes ahead of him. Ramsey just basically checked every box but Hargreaves still has speed questions. Hargreaves ran a 4.5 even and that’s not the type of speed you’re looking for from an outside corner. He’s already lacking the ideal size because he’s thin and wiry. Ramsey will most likely be a top 3-5 pick we have no chance of drafting him unless we trade up. Hargreaves will probably be there but he could go earlier than 9 simply because this class lacks top end talent in the secondary besides Ramsey, Hargreaves, and MAYBE Alexander and Apple. There’s no clear cut round 1 DBs

    @ Chyno1

obviously you didn’t actually watch, if you’re saying Hargreaves is “thin and wiry”. Mayock and Deion noted several times that Hargreaves is a thick corner, and they did not expect him to weigh in at 204 lbs at 5’10”. at that height, most expected him to be aroud 190-195 lbs. taller corners and safeties typically carry that kind of weight.

No doubt – Looks like we can make the playoffs this year. Just gotta make a few major moves.

  6. ChanEpic Says:

Jalen tomorrow, today and next week. But alas, he probably won’t be there when we pick.

  7. Tom S. Says:

Take the best available player. If it’s Hargreaves take him. If it’s Spence or Ogbah then take them.

No matter the player there is always the risk they fall on their face in the NFL (Aaron Curry, Dion Jordan, Jason Smith). You increase your chances of failure if you try to pigeon-hole a need with your first round pick instead of taking a player who can give you a 10-year career as a quality starter at another.

  8. Tampa Tony Says:

Bad gms like dominik draft for need. Licht needs to take the best player on the board

  9. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Joe won’t watch it. But he will attend in person, lol.

Frankly, I don’t watch it either. I prefer game tape and information gathered. Besides, just because they do something at the combine (with no pads on) doesn’t mean they will in the NFL.

  10. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    No to Janoris Jenkins!

Same agent as Revis. Wants $12M+ per year. Sign him and kiss Dougie goodbye.

  11. Joe Says:

So, Bill Walsh and Jimmy Johnson were bad GMs? Neither believed in the “best player available” falsehood.

  12. Luther Says:

I may get heat for saying it but Bill Walsh was 10 times the coach that Billicheat is. His impact on football is STILL being felt.

Schwartz & Feinsodhave a long history with the Buccaneers. Countless, players high profile players in the past have utilized their services.

    The currently represent:
    • Vincent Jackson
    • Clinton McDonald
    • Patrick Murray

Note: They also represent 49er’s G/T Alex Boone. Hopefully we can bring him into the fold – to replace Logan Mankins.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS

Still depends on the price though. He isn’t worth $12m. No CB is. $8m tops.

    And that includes Revis.

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Janoris Jenkins balked at an offer from the Rams worth $45MM over five years, though it’s not clear how much of that money would have been guaranteed.

Give the kid a little more guaranteed money.

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

So…am I right in stating that we have these picks?

    Rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6?
    No 7th?

    Bpa…fill our holes in FA…

I realize fa s have noy panned out in recent years….thats because lovie picked the ones that were busts and yhe ither ones underperformed becasue lovie coached them

  21. 813bucboi Says:

if vhg is there at #9 we have to take him…great player with great technique and the win now attitude…after that I hope we stack the dline with dt and de’s…GO BUCS!!!

    BuccaneerBonzai

    Welcome brudda

  23. Lord Cornelius Says:

I honestly think VH could be a better pro than Ramsey if I had to bet on it. And I’m an FSU alum / homer.

Technique is way more important than athletic prowess when it comes to DBs; and VH has technique all day and is ready to start day 1.

Dude is physically built just like Chris Harris Jr and ran the same 40 as him; and CH Jr is a top 5 CB right now. It’d be one thing if he was 5’8 but the guy is 5’10 and has a 39″ vertical which is huge. Revis is 5’11 and shuts down a lot of 6’3+ guys. You think him being 5’11 or 5’10 is the key in that equation lol? it’s all timing / technique.

  24. LifeOfABucFan Says:

That’s why I am part of the Lord C fan club…I agree completely!!!

  25. Kalind Says:

Not the first time you’ve been wrong Joe. But that’s cool. Ramsey is going first. Dominated Hargreaves in the measureables. AND was on a winning team. AND was a leader on said winning team. Bigger. Stronger. Faster. More versatile.

  26. Tom S. Says:

Only Joe would compare Mark Dominik to Bill Walsh.

Dominik will always be Joe’s Bill Walsh.

  27. Joe Says:

Only Joe would compare Mark Dominik to Bill Walsh.

Only a fool would try to twist Joe’s words into that.

“Best player available” is largely am NFL urban myth, proven by two of the greatest draft minds there has been.

  28. Joe Says:

I may get heat for saying it but Bill Walsh was 10 times the coach that Billicheat is. His impact on football is STILL being felt.

Joe sees where you are going but wouldn’t go that far.

Yes, Walsh’s impact on the game is much more significant than Belicheat’s. Totally agree.

Wouldn’t say Walsh is 10-times better. How Belicheat finds a way to win year after year in the salary cap age is pretty amazing.

  29. Bucs53 Says:

I don’t have problems with Hargreaves, but he isn’t Ramsey. Ramsey owns this rivalry, and Jalen will be gone first. Smarter. Faster. Stronger. Taller.

  30. Dave Says:

Can we put the “best player available” vs “draft for need” to rest
    PLEASE!!!!!!

Every team drafts what they need but incorporate the BPA. It’s fricking common sense.

Bucs need a DE and a CB so they are taking them, but they’re not going to take a CB in Rd 2 that’s rated for Rd 4-5.

Name a team that doesn’t draft for need????

You can not. They don’t exist.

  31. Dave Says:

VH or Ramsey and sign Janoris Jenkins…. They would be great but…..
I’d rather sign JJ, draft a CB in Rd 2-3 and take s top DE in Rd 1

  32. Caleb Says:

    @Dave-

There is no top DE at pick 9 better than VH, this guy is a must take at number 9. The DE position is deep compared to DB, take VH at 9 and look to upgrade DE in rounds 2-4. A safety would be a good look during rounds 3-4 as well. Defense is where this draft needs to be focused.
