The Bucs had a helluva November. They took arguably the best team in the NFC to overtime in their chamber-of-doom house, then proceeded to win three straight during what looks to be the embryonic stages of a blossoming quarterback and perhaps the sparing of Bucs commander Greg Schiano from the guillotine.
But to be frank, there isn’t a huge secret to the Bucs’ success. It comes down to good old fashioned football that never has and never will go out of style. The Bucs are forcing turnovers and Joe is geeked.
In fact, the Bucs led the NFL in forcing turnovers in November. Twelve to be exact, three recovered fumbles and had nine — NINE! — interceptions. Overall, the Bucs are tied for third in the NFL with 15 picks with two teams that look to be playoff bound: Carolina and Arizona.
No, Joe is not completely in the tank for Mike Glennon. Yet. He is getting Joe’s attention but for Joe to fall off the deep end for him, he has to do more of what he did last Sunday against the Lions.
That was the first game where Joe saw Glennon rifle passes downfield, hitting streaking receivers in the numbers. It’s one thing to ring up a great completion percentage with dump off passes, but at some point a quarterback has to stretch a defense. Against the Lions, Glennon did just that.
Joe wants to see more of that to be convinced Sunday wasn’t a fluke for Glennon. [read more]
Carolina sack leader Charles Johnson (8.5 sacks), who threw Mike Glennon to the ground twice last month, has been ruled out for Sunday’s Bucs-Panthers game with a knee injury, per the Charlotte Observer.
Hooray! DeAngelo Williams also could be out. [read more]
The Bucs’ $1-million-per-game cornerback, Darrelle Revis, was back practicing today after injuring his groin in Detroit. That’s a great sign. It’s rare in NFL cirlces for a player to play on Sunday if he doesn’t practice Friday.
Officially, Revis was “limited” in practice, per the Bucs.
An MRI on Revis earlier this week helped clear him to start playing again, and Revis was upbeat to Joe on Wednesday about his condition.
Fingers crossed for Sunday in Carolina. The guy’s impact can’t be discounted, especially with Panthers receiver Steve Smith banged up. [read more]
Joe remembers three or four years ago, many people mocked Twitter for being something that middle school girls fooled with.
From the moment Joe learned of Twitter, he knew it was a good thing and mocked those who dismissed it. Now, Twitter is a viable news source and depending who is doing the Twittering, a trusted source of breaking news.
Last week, when Dashon Goldson was suspended, he flew to California to be with family and be treated by doctors he had used in his days with the 49ers. Why? Because he was banned from One Buc Palace for the week (more on that later). While on his return flight, he had to shut down his electronics as the plane was approaching Tampa International Airport with the Bucs and the Lions in a tight game in the final minutes. [read more]
It’s Part II of Joe’s exclusive chat with Bucs special teams coach Dave Wannstedt, who’s in his 39th year of coaching. The man has ridden major highs and lows of the business, including Super Bowl rings with the Cowboys and three AFC East titles with the Dolphins and Jay Fiedler, of all quarterbacks.
In Part I, Joe talked all things special teams and Mike Glennon with Wannstedt (here if you missed it). In this segment, Wannstedt explains his insider perspective on Greg Schiano righting the Bucs’ ship. [read more]
Bobby Rainey went from superstar against Atlanta to stuffed routinely in the backfield in Detroit.
In his exclusive Bucs-Panthers preview for JoeBucsFan.com, veteran WTSP-TV, Ch. 10 sportscaster Dave Wirth dives into Rainey and other keys to Sunday’s game. Enjoy!
Is Greg Schiano finished with the concept of competition at QB? As of today, Joe sure hopes not.
Erin Sheroni, prickly Pete Prisco and former Jets assistant coach and personnel chief Pat Kirwan, a primetime voice on NFL Radio, sit around in this CBSSports.com video and talk about the Bucs sensation sweeping the nation — Mike Glennon.
Kirwan had plenty to say about Glennon, but he also dove into Greg Schiano’s switch to Glennon and expressed certainty that Schiano will cross quarterback off his spring shopping list. [read more]

Most surprising about the Bucs picking off Matthew Stafford four times last week was the Bucs did this largely without key veteran starters Darrelle Revis and Dashon Goldson.
Revis messed up his groin. He hasn’t practiced (yet) this week and it’s unclear if he will be available Sunday against the Stinking Panthers. Goldson, however, should be. He spoke on WDAE-AM 620 this week about how missing the game was like being “a convict,” [read more]

The hated Panthers receiver had some interesting comments on ESPN Radio
Every Bucs fan loathes Steve Smith. When will this guy go away, or at least get drilled hard enough to shut him up?
Joe, however, was thoroughly entertained watching Smith get inside Aqib Talib’s head a couple of weeks ago on Monday Night Football. What brilliant theater. This week, Smith was asked to talk about whether he sees a change in defensive backs trying to play within new safety rules of the NFL, like the ones Bucs safety Dashon Goldson can’t figure out. No, it is no sure thing that Bucs commander Greg Schiano returns next season. That is not locked in stone. He will finish the 2013 season with, at best, a .500 record and still a losing record in his two seasons as Bucs coach.
Now as Joe has pointed out before, the weather vane is pointing for a return for Schiano. Here’s another tea leaf that reads Schiano is your Bucs coach for 2014: [read more]
Now that Mike Glennon is starting to become known in the football world outside of Raleigh, N.C., people are trying to get to know him, see how he clicks.
Joe has spoken to Glennon a handful of times. Seems like a nice guy. So too did leaky Rip Van Freeman.
It seems part of the reason Glennon has flourished as a rookie, forced into the starting role maybe sooner than Bucs commander Greg Schiano had wanted, was that Glennon is a little PO’ed; has got a little bit of a chip — his confession. [read more]
If the Bucs decide to keep Greg Schiano and continue to win this season with Mike Glennon, does that change their draft plans?
The Bucs are winning, which, as miserable as it was during the eight-game losing streak to start the game, seemed hard to fathom.
Does the winning save Bucs commander Greg Schiano’s job? Has Mike Glennon done enough to be canonized as the next Bucs franchise quarterback? And what of the draft?
These subjects came up during “Kaufman’s Korner,” a weekly segment where the Custodian of Canton, eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune, guests with the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on the show that bears his name, “Mad Dog Unleashed,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio.
Chris “Mad Dog” Russo: Hey, what about Schiano? Forget about him getting fired. They’re going to give him a 10-year contract extension the way it is working out for the Buccaneers he’s done such a good job with the team. [read more]
Yes, your Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hard at work on Thanksgiving. It’s actually a shortened day for players in honor of the holiday, and they’ll add extra study tomorrow in preparation for the Panthers on Sunday.
No. 24, $1 million-per-game cornerback Darrelle Revis, didn’t practice today and continues to rest his ailing groin, Greg Schiano said this afternoon. Revis’ status remains day to day.
Some good news Joe didn’t share yesterday, Mason Foster has returned from his concussion with fresh legs and is full-go at practice.
Among other topics, Shaun King dives into how Greg Schiano might re-adjust when he feels his job is secure.
What would Thanksgiving be without Shaun King!
One of three quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to the NFL title game, King minced no words on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday when talking about the Bucs’ performance in Detroit. “That’s a quality win.” [read more]
