Do You Like Your Cornerbacks?

March 21st, 2014

johnthan banks 0728With the addition of veteran cornerback Mike Jenkins yesterday, Joe started thinking about the state of the Bucs’ crop of cornerbacks.

Yeah, it’s early, but are they deep enough or good enough? Here’s a look:

Dashon Goldson Learning To Tackle

March 21st, 2014
Hawk Goldson has reached out to his youth football coach to relearn how to tackle.

Hawk Goldson has reached out to his youth football coach to re-learn tackling.

Joe understands why Dashon Goldson irked some Bucs fans last year. The hard-hitting safety became too hard of a hitting safety in the new football world of NFL warden commissioner Roger Goodell.

It is simply jarring watching clips of Raiders-Steelers games from the 1970s, which were glorified backalley brawls, with guys getting clothes-lined and pile-driven into Astroturf on every play, dudes spearing knees five yards out of bounds, all right at the feet of zebras who don’t even think of reaching for a flag. Bucs Add Mike Jenkins

March 20th, 2014

Updated: 4:29 p.m.: It sure looks like Lovie Smith has no desire to relive the horror of the 2012 Buccaneers secondary. Anything resembling the fearsome foursome, “E.J., Leonard, Danny and LeQuan” is unlikely to see the field on Lovie’s watch.

Today, per NFL Network, the Bucs signed former Pro Bowler Mike Jenkins, the former 2008 first-round pick out of the University of South Florida. [read more]

Dungy weighs in on Mike Glennon, too.

A little known piece of Bucs history was revealed today on WDAE-AM 620;  Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford could have (and maybe should have) been a Buccaneer in 1996.

Father Dungy said on the Ron and Ian show that he tried to hire Tedford for his inaugural staff in ’96, but he couldn’t convince him to reunite in Tampa with one of his prized college students, Trent Dilfer. [read more]

Hurt By Free Agency

Can backup QB Mike Glennon recover?

Just like in your kitchen grocery pantry. Or better, your clothes closet in the bedroom.

When you shop and buy new stuff, older stuff in storage tends to get pushed around, or in the case of clothes, gets pushed aside and in some cases, the old threads won’t see the light of day until they are dropped off at a Salvation Army thrift store.

Dungy Calls The Bucs’ First-Round Goal

March 20th, 2014

Joe must pay close attention when Lovie Smith’s friend and mentor speaks out on what he expects from the Buccaneers on Day 1 of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Father Dungy joined the Ron and Ian show this morning on WDAE-AM 620 and weighed in on all things Bucs. [read more]

“They’ve Gotta Think About The Future”

March 20th, 2014

A quarterback at No. 7, or a trade down for Marqise Lee? Tim Ryan weighs in.

Lovieball brings Bucs fans a true throwback vibe, but it’s important to remember it’s a brand new regime with new attitudes.

Heck, Jeff Tedford is bringing an “up tempo” offense to Tampa Bay. (Dang, it seems like yesterday Jon Gruden was resisting the shotgun as if it were an STD.) [read more]

Drafting A QB In First Round

March 20th, 2014

johnny football 0320

Joe has to apologize. He’s a bit late on this, not finding it until after the Bucs signed starting quarterback Josh McCown. But this video is still relevant in Joe’s eyes — and as a bonus it features hottie Allie LaForce.

Doug Gottlieb and LaForce, co-hosts of “Leadoff,” which you enjoy weeknights on the CBS Sports Network, discuss the pros and cons of the Bucs drafting a signal-caller with the No. 7 overall pick.

Relax, Ronde!

March 20th, 2014

No. 20 had a little tension in his voice last night

Among other numbers, no Buccaneer has worn a No. 40 or a No. 55 since the men who made those digits legendary hung up their cleats.

It’s been a sign of respect silently approved by Team Glazer that has gone on for years. [read more]

Bill Polian reveals his personal tie to Johnny’s intense work ethic

It just blows Joe’s mind how people concoct and invent pure fiction to disgrace someone they don’t like, for reasons Joe cannot understand. Take Johnny Football for example. One of the greatest quarterbacks to ever lace up a pair of cleats in college football, Johnny Football has become some sort of gridiron Lucifer the way so many Bucs fans despise the guy. [read more]

BSPN Hires The “Rock Star”

Dominik, per Cummings, signed a one-year pact.

Donald Penn Blasts Bucs’ New Regime

March 20th, 2014

One selling point in the recent sales marathon at One Buc Palace was noted by Bucs general manager Jason Licht. He expressed that free agents have so much respect for head coach Lovie Smith. One player who isn’t in that club is Donald Penn.

Brandon Myers: Lovie’s “Top Of The Chart” TE

March 19th, 2014

BrandonMyersgiantsNew Bucs tight end Brandon Myers is hardly a talent familiar to Tampa Bay fans, especially those who don’t play fantasy football. But it’s time Bucs fans get used to him.

He’s Lovie Smith’s No. 1 tight end, Lovie said.  [read more]

Josh McCown = Rich Gannon?

March 19th, 2014

rich gannon 0319

Clearly when the Bucs signed the former Bears quarterback, journeyman Josh McCown, they had visions of his 1,829 yards in eight appearances last year dancing in their heads. But was that just a fluke or a harbinger of things to come?

A local beat writer speaks out on the massive roster shuffling

Five Buccaneers remain from the 2010 roster, the one that took the team to a 10-6 record and was a touchdown-negating terrible call on Kellen Winslow away from 11-5 and the playoffs.

Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud blames Team Glazer for this stunning overhaul of what was then the youngest roster in the NFL. [read more]

Trade Winds Blowing For Glennon?

March 19th, 2014

GlennonPennJoe’s hardly a fan of Todd McShay and helmet hair Mel Kiper, the BSPN draft gurus. Joe respects Kiper’s career accomplishments and, yes, these guys put in year-round effort on the draft, but their work is suspect at best compared to Mike Mayock and many of their draft-guru colleagues.

However, that’s not to say Kiper and McShay don’t have excellent sources and access to NFL decision-makers. [read more]

“Victory”

For those who monitor prickly Pete Prisco, of CBS Sports, on Twitter, you know the guy is a bitter dude. Angry. Snarling. Sometimes, Joe doesn’t know if prickly Pete can crack a smile.

So to get prickly Pete to throw rose pedals of respect to an NFL team is quite an accomplishment. That’s what Bucs general manager Jason Light got. Prickly Pete is so pleased with Licht’s work the past week or so, prickly Pete gave Licht and the Bucs an A-grade for free agency. [read more]
