Herm Edwards Prefers Newton Over Freeman

November 16th, 2012

Watch Herm Edwards and an ESPN roundtable crew take themselves far too seriously in discussing who they prefer, Josh Freeman or Cam Newton.

Cam Newton was even that great last year. His team went 6-10. And two of those wins came late in the year vs our very own 4-12 Bucs. Do I even have to mention the state of that team in December last year? It was basically a free, stat padding game for the opponent.

Listen, I am a Bucs fan. So obviously, I would take Josh Freeman over Newton. But looking at it as a football fan, I don’t know how anyone would take Cam over Josh. They are playing at two totally different levels. And Cam has pretty much ZERO leadership qualities.

Josh gets no love because he plays for the Bucs. He is not force fed to everyone by ESPN. He isnt on Papa Johns commercials. He doesnt do the discount double check. He just plays and recently he just wins games.

I was listening to WFAN radio in NY the other morning (Boomer and Carton show) and Craig Carton said he would take Mark Sanchez over Josh Freeman. Adam Schein wanted Christian Ponder over Josh a few weeks back.

It just goes to show you how asinine some of these commentators are. Makes you wonder if they even watch the games sometimes.

Herm also picked the PAnthers to win on Sunday…whats his fascination?

  3. jfgobucs Says:

Just like I prefer JAWS over Herm Edwards…No big deal…

  4. GT40BEAR Says:

Love Herm, but this might help explain why he’s on TV instead of being on the sidelines on Sundays.

  5. T.Howard Says:

I remember Herm’s name being thrown around when we were looking for a new HC… Maybe there’s some underlying resentment here? I don’t know, it was just the first thing that came to mind..but I am an ass 97% of the time.

  6. bucobruce Says:

  8. Ian's Gay Lisp & Ron's Drinking Problem Says:

I’ll take the more mentally stable QB….thank you. Cam has a little O.J. Simpson & Chris Brown in him (it seems)

  9. bucfanjeff Says:

I would take Freeman any day and twice on Sunday’s!
I didn’t like Cam coming out of college and don’t like him now. Tremendous athlete, bad QB.
RG3 on the other hand….hmmmm, smart and accurate and mobile.

    Tampaaaaaaaa!

  10. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

Stephen A Smith should stick to basketball, i hate how he preaches and talks down to people. if he knew anything about football you take the guy whos a team player and not doin a Superman impression when his team is losing. Cam has the same talents of Vick but bigger. and as far as Herm goes, to blame Josh for last year shows why nobody asked him to coach their team. to quote Herm, “you play to win the game” and Josh does that. and for Stephen to say Cam doesnt have the talent around him needs too look at that roster again, Steve Smith is a beast and their RBs are more of a threat than people give them credit for. last season we didnt have alot of talent around Josh but with the NSO in place and a few new players id take Josh over 75% of the starters out there now!!! I HATE STEPHEN A SMITH!!!!!!!!!!! BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!!

  11. SteveK Says:

“Hello!? You play to with the game.”

    – Herm Edwards

Well Herm, do you feel lucky punk?

sCam Newton is an athlete, but Josh is the QB.

  12. SteveK Says:

Freeman is better than Cam, no questions asked.

    Better leader

    Better thrower

    Better person

  13. st. louis Bucs fan Says:

Stephen A Smith is an ASS CLOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!! man i hate that guy, he debates (or preaches/talks down) Skip (who by the way studies college and pros in football almost as good as Kiper or Mcshay) on a subject he knows little about. if it isnt basketball hes clueless. im not a violent person but i would love to knock the snot outta him then whoop his ass for havin a runny nose!!!!! hate that douce!!! BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. GenocideD Says:

This is why the Chiefs were such a good team! Wait, they suck/sucked and he was excused/fired/kicked to the way side. Oh wait, that happened with the jets, too. Hmmmm. I’m seeing a pattern here.

  15. Murse Says:

Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless are both overblown idiots…Having said that, It’s nice to see Freeman getting some kind of national recognition…But please Skip stay off Free’s bandwagon…Skip also thinks Tim Teebow is a real gem and the guy can’t even beat out sorry ass sanchize LMAO…so please saty FAR away skip….and que the insane gator/timmy-T fans in 3,2,1…

  16. ian_620wdae Says:

so now the excuse is that Freeman has too many weapons? LOL!!

  17. Danny Says:

Some people predicted Scam Newton to be league MVP but now the wheels are coming off. No one predicted a sophomore slump. But these same people said the same thing about Freeman last year.

  18. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

The best way to determine who’s best………….scoreboard!

  19. OAR Says:

    Hmmm! Lets see………………
Josh is 5-4, 155 comp out of 273 attempts (56.8%) for 2257 yds, 18 tds and 5 ints.
    Scam is 2-7, 155 out of 271 attempts (57.2%) for 2143 yds, 8 tds and 10 ints.
Thier stats are similar, except for the most important ones WINS and TDs to INTs! Logic tells me who I would pick, even if I wasn’t a fan of the Bucs!

  20. Chris FWC Says:

Ones on FIRE the others a CRIER!

  21. terry4505 Says:

I can’t believe I agree with Skip Bayless.. What is wrong with this picture?

I asked, as a lot of people did back before the year, who is Josh Freeman? As Josh Goes, so goes this team. 13 TDs, 0 Ints (albeit two should have been picked Sunday) over the last 4 games

  22. Brandon Says:

There is more to a QB’s effectiveness than wins and losses. It is a big indicator as Cam was only 4-10 last season in games NOT against the NFL’s JV Buccaneers. What sellls me on Freeman over Newton is attitude. Newton’s true colors are only starting to come out. He is a talented athleted, a decent QB, but he has a serious problem with his attitude. QBs should be egotistical, but Cam has made everything about him, he pouts, sulks, calls out teammates, etc. His act is only beginning in Carolina and it will soon be wearing thin if he doesn’t change his frontrunning ways.

As for talent… gimme a break! Steve Smith was all-world last season and is still a huge threat this season. His two RBs re very good. Does anybody think that the reason why Stewart and Williams aren’t playing well because teams are taking away Cam’s strengths (running game) and forcing him to beat them with his weaknesses (namely his arm)? Is it possible that the reason the Panthers can’t develop another WR because Cam can’t find him even if he were open? Good QBs make the most of the talent around them. The Panthers have talent in every place the Bucs do, and perhaps even better… except one area, QB. The Bucs have a level-headed team player, the Panthers have a me-first immature frontrunner.

Even when the Bucs were terrible last season, Freeman didn’t let it get him down and he went out there and did his best…. in 2010 he led his team to numerous comebacks… last season the Panthers were 6-10 and lost several games in the 4th quarter… where were Newton’s comebacks? Advantage, Freeman, in a big way.

  23. Mainebuc Says:

GTFOH Herm! I don’t see how any rational person could pick Cam over Freeman. Herm’s ability to evaluate talent has always been questionable. That is why he is working for ESPN and not an NFL team.

  24. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Amen Miguel, post of the year from you!

I make it a point to not say that a QB can’t play before we play them, because I don’t want them to turn around and burn us and make me look stupid. Cam is much flashier than Josh, and he came into the league much more well known. He has his stupid little Superman dance (which looks absolutely ridiculous, plus Superman is so played out by now). If you talk about raw talent, he is probably much more talented than Josh because of his running ability and size (he’s probably more talented than any QB in that regard). However, raw talent means jack crap in the grand scheme of things. Was Joe Montana and Jerry Rice the most talented players of all time? Not even close. Time will tell who ends up being better (both of their careers are still in their infancy), but I will take my chances with Freeman from what I’ve seen so far.

  25. Mike Says:

    Freeman for President.

  26. holymoly Says:

Agree with Miguel , SCOREBOARD !

  27. stratobuc Says:

There is a reason Herm is on TV and no longer coaching. Newton over Freeman? Hilarious!!!!!! Maybe he likes that celebration thing Cammy does, while forgetting to look at the scoreboard.
