Tim Tebow Over Josh Freeman

Thursday, August 15th, 2013

tim tebowIn one of Joe’s worst, diabolical nightmares, an opposing team led by misplaced fullback/quarterback Tim Tebow leads said team to victory over the Bucs and roundly outplays Bucs franchise quarterback Josh Freeman.

(This nightmare isn’t as bad as the one Joe has experienced prior: a world without beer.)

Coincidentally, Joe read the Twitter feed of Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune who, from Bucs-Patriots joint practice in Foxborough yesterday posted this most unsettling information.

@RCummingsTBO: The most effective QB wearing the number 5 out here today has been Tim Tebow. By a mile. Not a good day for Josh Freeman

Joe had to do a double-take. Joe thought, naively perhaps, that Freeman may have put his Six Flags days behind him. The past two weeks he had been mostly exceptional. But to be roundly outplayed by Tebow of all people, Freeman must have hit rock bottom.

Yes, Joe did think Freeman had gotten past this. But maybe this is just who Freeman is and who fans can and should expect. Six Flags. The highest of highs, and then getting shamed by Tebow, if you can imagine such a thing.

Let’s hope that big ol’ rollercoaster gets stuck at its peak.

schiano-belicheat

Joe’s good friends at WDAE-AM 620, by way of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have some quality audio from today’s memorable joint practice with the Patriots. Joe already brought you the words of Greg Schiano. Now it’s defensive end Adrian Clayborn, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and quarterback Josh Freeman.

Last but not least is Pats coach Bill Belicheat, who spoke before practice.

Again, the audio is courtesy of WDAE-AM 620 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Joe Mixes It Up With The Big Dog

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

It’s the new Wednesday tradition, Joe sits down with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio at 5 p.m. on WDAE-AM 620. All sorts of chatter in the mix today. Remember, Joe hit the airwaves shortly after all the Tom Brady injury news was breaking. Enjoy.

Furnace Still Blazing Under Da’Quan Bowers

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

daquan bowers 0229There’s not much more Joe can add to the Greg Schiano quotes on Da’Quan Bowers (see below) following Bucs practice in New England today, courtesy of the Bucs’ media relations team.

Schiano is demanding production. The heat is on, Mr. Bowers.

(On who will start on the defensive line)

“There are no starting jobs right now. Guys are competing on the defensive front. You’ve got Gerald mcCoy, that’s a guy who is definitely starting. If AC [defensive end Adrian Claybrn] can come back healthy, then he’s definitely starting. After that it’s wide open.”

(On Da’Quan Bowers getting increased playing time)

“Yeah, as soon as we know that he can. He needs to play situational football, he needs to play a bunch of plays in a row, but not at the cost of [production].  So, it’s a double-edged sword that we’re trying to make sure we are on the right edge of.”

(On if Bowers will play in the game against the Patriots)

“Yeah.”

(On how the team is evaluating Bowers)

“Everything is being evaluated. I told you what I wanted and what I expected but I’m not going to make it happen if it isn’t there. It’s got to be there. We’ll see, he’s got an opportunity Friday night and we’ve got another game next week, so we’ll just keep playing it out and see how it goes.”

You can hear Schiano talk about this and more in the WDAE-AM 620 audio below, via the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Here’s the film-heard-round-the-NFL from Bucs practice today. It’s not Clayborn’s fault that the Pats couldn’t block him.

Joe will have much more later from practice in Foxborough.

“Mark Dominik Needs To Stop Talking”

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

Beat writer and sports radio host Rick Stroud offered some harsh words for the Bucs’ GM

The will-he-or-won’t-he-play-in-the-preseason chatter swirling around Darrelle Revis has taken on new life.

Yesterday, rockstar general manager Mark Dominik told BSPN that Revis may play next week but later Greg Schiano and Darrelle Revis lowered those expectations publicly.

Tampa Bay Times Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud is no fan of the mixed messages. “Mark Dominik needs to stop talking,” Stroud said on The Sports Page on WDAE-AM 620 this morning.

Joe really can’t get all caught up in the nonsense. Joe thinks Revis could use the confidence that would come from a few preseason series. He is, in fact, human. But if Revis is not fully recovered, then there’s no point rushing it. Superman Adrian Peterson managed to dominate without playing last August. (Click below to hear Stroud’s full take, and his impressions of Tom Brady versus the Bucs defense yesterday.)

Casillas Pushing For Starting Gig

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

Now Joe knows the Bucs hope Dekoda Watson wins the starting outside linebacker gig. They have all but given the job to him. But Bucs commander Greg Schiano is big on competition. He says he doesn’t believe in handing out starting jobs just for the sake of playing Robin Hood.

Well, if competition is what Schiano wants, competition is what he is getting at strongside linebacker. Jonathan Casillas is doing everything he can to push Watson if not win the starting gig outright.

Casillas has continued his strong August in a new locale, the practice fields of the Patriots where the Bucs and Pats are participating in joint practices. Casillas made some of yesterday’s better plays, noted Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times.

Bucs LB Jonathan Casillas blew up Patriots S Duron Harmon when covering a kickoff, coming downhill at full speed and literally putting Harmon on his back for the day’s most violent hit. Casillas is gaining a reputation in camp as a big hitter.

Not just that, but a reputation as one of the Bucs better linebackers. There was a drive in the Bucs’ preseason opener against the Crows last week where Casillas, in consecutive plays, had a tackle for loss, a tackle for a short gain, and a pass breakup. He shut down a drive single-handed.

If Casillas isn’t doing enough to overcome Watson to be the starter, he sure as hell is making loud noise about getting on the field when opponents have the ball.

Loading Up On Leonard

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

Former Bucs tight end and current Buccaneers Radio Network analyst Dave Moore uses lots of Xs and Os detail to paint running back Brian Leonard as the anti-Blount, during the WDAE-AM 620 interview below.

Moore was very impressed by Leonard in the preseason opener and says the Bucs will use him a ton in the upcoming preseason games so the coaching staff can build a complete trust in him. Moore was not as high on Peyton Hillis.

“His problem is he doesn’t get his pads down low enough,” Moore said of Hillis. “We saw on four runs he got his legs cut out twice from under him just because he can’t get that center of gravity down low enough to keep those little DBs from getting under him.”

As always, Moore serves up no-nonsense, old school analysis of all things Bucs, including the pushing of Da’Quan Bowers, how the rain affected Chris Owusu, and more.

Which Is It?

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

So was Pats all-world quarterback Tom Brady sloppy against the Bucs or was he Hall of Fame worthy?

Ah, the tale of two cities. And how things can look so differently to disparate pairs of eyes used to a different prism.

Joe hunted for Bucs morsels last night when he came across a headline on NESN.com (for the uninitiated, that acronym stands for “New England Sports Network”) that wailed how the Patriots offense was sloppy and out of sync.

Then, there were the Twitter feeds of Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune and Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times, both in Foxborough for the joint Bucs-Pats practices. They both waxed poetic about the arm of Tom Brady .

Cummings, as Joe passed word, documented how Brady took Bucs rookie cornerback Johnthan Banks to NFL school. Holder professed that Brady was throwing laser after laser so often, that free agent wide receivers should pay Brady for the honor to line up with him.

Perhaps reality is somewhere in the middle?

Pats beat writers may be used to as close to perfection from a quarterback as a man can get. If Brady is just above average, he looks sloppy because the man sets such a high standard. Bucs beat writers, used to the ups and downs of Freeman, and eras of schlock before him, see a man in Brady who practiced consistently above average, and are wowed.

If one listens to the words of NESN Pats beat writers Doug Kyed and Luke Hughes, it seems the Bucs fared quite well for themselves yesterday against the Mighty Belicheats.

Belicheat Smitten With Doug Martin

Wednesday, August 14th, 2013

doug martin 0814

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Bill Belicheat and the Patriots got LeGarrette Blount. And the Bucs have Doug Martin. Who would you choose?

Sure, Blount is playing damned good ball for the Patriots. In preseason. Against guys who will be insurance claims adjusters in three weeks. The Bucs still have Martin.

To hear the lauded Patriots coach talk, he sure is fond of Martin, so he said after the Bucs-Patriots joint practices in raining New England, types Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.

“He’s a good three-down player,’’ Belichick told the media Tuesday. “There’s really no reason for him to come off the field skill-wise. It’s a question of how they want to manage him. He can run, he can catch, he’s a tough kid. Good inside runner, good outside runner, can go the distance, handles the ball well in passing game; good on blitz pickup. Really, he can do it all.’’

This is what makes the Bucs offense scary good. If Martin can get rolling, it opens up the entire offense because defenses will start cheating and then — boom! — Freeman fries the secondary with a bomb to Vincent Jackson or Mike Williams.

Just look at the games last year when Martin got loose. The Bucs offense was impressive.

Joe may not be in Boston but that doesn’t mean Joe is detached from the Bucs. Courtesy of Joe’s good friends at WDAE-AM 620 via the Buccaneers, there are all sorts of audio clips to listen to as the Bucs practiced with the Patriots this week, leading up to their preseason game showdown Friday.

Included in the interviews are wide receiver Tiquan Underwood, cornerback Darrelle Revis and Bucs coach Greg Schiano.

Also for perspective, there is audio of Bill Belicheat’s press conference and audio of former Bucs cornerback and current Patriots stalwart Aqib Talib.

Johnthan Banks Taken To School Today

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

nunIt was only a matter of time before Johnthan Banks had rookie moments. And the Bucs cornerback apparently had his share this morning when facing the Patriots in practice in Foxborough.

Per Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune, Banks was baptized by one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever line up behind center, future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, so Cummings Twittered.

@RCummingsTBO: Bucs CB Johnthan Banks is getting a real welcome to the NFL schooling today by Tom Brady. Brady hits Aaron Dobson again for a completion

This, in Joe’s eyes, is both good and bad for the Bucs.

First, the good: The quicker Banks learns the NFL ropes the better for the Bucs. The fact he got lit up a few times by Brady should go a long way toward Banks’ NFL education.

Now, here’s the bad: If Banks is getting torched like this, in practice no less, just how much can Banks improve in a month by the time he and the Bucs face a true NFL surgeon of a quarterback, Drew Brees?

It isn’t like Banks won’t get thrown at. You think any offensive coordinator with a sober mind is going to challenge Darrelle Revis when on the other side of the field is a raw, green rookie?

Banks is a talented corner. He’s proven that in practice. But facing the likes of Brady and Brees is a whole different animal than facing a fellow rookie in practice like Mike Glennon.

Touchdown, Mike Glennon!

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

Sports radio giant WEEI-FM out of Boston chronicled its share of Bucs-Patriots practice notes today from outside Gillette Stadium.

An exchange involving Mike Williams Mike Glennon and helmet-wielding, cabbie-slugging, Adderrall-popping, coach-cussing, referee-charging, pistol-friendly, granny-hassling Pats cornerback Aqib Talib caught their attention.

Defensively, there were some ups and downs for the Patriots, who did a lot of personnel shuffling. In 7-on-7 work, it was interesting watching rookie linebacker Jamie Collins running with what appeared to be a reasonable facsimile of the starting defense. On one dropback from Tampa quarterback Mike Glennon, you could hear cornerback Aqib Talib barking instructions to Collins on coverage and technique, and Collins was able to make the adjustments in the middle of the play and break up a pass meant for Tampa receiver Mike Williams. It was a good sequence for the rookie, who was able to make the necessary changes on the fly and come away with the pass defensed. (To be fair, Collins was beaten on the next play where Glennon found a different receiver for a touchdown catch.)

You can click through for more above, though there aren’t many Bucs mentioned by name.

Joe got a laugh out of the light rain described as creating “chilly” conditions. Imagine that.

Jackson Earns Player-Of-The-Day Honor

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

An outsider’s view of the Bucs-Patriots practice today pegged Vincent Jackson as the overall standout while Johnthan Banks was schooled but proved tough.

Pats beat writer Doug Kyed, of NESN, typed up notes. Here’s an excerpt:

Vincent Jackson was far and away the best player on the field at Gillette Stadium. The Buccaneers wide receiver schooled the Patriots’ defensive backs in the New England-Tampa Bay joint practice. It didn’t matter if Aqib Talib was covering him or rookie Logan Ryan, Jackson was going to come down with the ball. It was a sloppy day overall for the Patriots.

And it was a tough day for Bucs rookies, and apparently a sloppy one all around.

The weather was less than ideal with a haze covering the sky and occasional rain fall. There were dropped passes, sacks and missed throws, too. It wasn’t all bad for the Patriots, though. Zach Sudfeld continues to prove why his stock is currently soaring. Sudfeld was with the first-team offense for the majority of practice, catching passes from Tom Brady all day.

The play of the day came on a pass from Brady to Kenbrell Thompkins. Thompkins reached around Rashaan Melvin to make a one-handed grab. Other than a muffed punt return, Thompkins had another stellar day — which has become the norm — on the practice field.

*The Patriots were torching Johnthan Banks early on, but the rookie cornerback rebounded with a couple nice plays on fellow rookie Dobson.

*While working with the twos, Tavon Wilson tipped the ball up and picked off Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon. It was one of his best plays of the summer.

Hopefully, Banks grows from the experience — before Week 3 at New England.
