Todd Bowles walks across the field to greet Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell after the Bucs lost yesterday.
Joe used to have a driven and motivated tax accountant.
He didn’t want any of his clients to pay tax.
This guy was so intense it made Joe wonder if the accountant was going to get into a hassle with the IRS.
If you sat down with him to go over your taxes, he would do his calculations and review your writeoffs and if you still owed money, he would bark, “WE NEED MORE!”
Translation: find more writeoffs. Now.
That story came to Joe’s mind when KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles was asked to explain how his talented team could start the season 0-3.
“I don’t have an explanation,” Bowles said. “We just gotta do more and play better.
“To a man, to a coach and everybody else. We play better and we gotta do more.”
In other words, his players, specifically the offense, need to do more.
But what can the coaches do, especially now that starting quarterback Baker Mayfield is likely going to miss time.
Good luck doing more when you have to start a rookie undrafted free agent at quarterback.

Robinson will expand his playbook to include many more RPO’s and Jalon will more easily evade the rush which will be ever present with the Oline issues we have, It will be more exciting to watch of this I am sure.

Grizzard was made out to be the scapegoat. Last season he did more with less than Robinson, yet got canned. Bowles was the one should’ve been fired. Have to wonder if we’d have been better off keeping him. It’s obvious now he wasn’t the problem.

People are asking “how could this undrafted rookies possibly do worse than Mayfield?” I am afraid there are about a thousand ways and we may be getting ready to see them. Remember, this guy would go through streaks at Kansas playing mediocre college teams where he could not hit the broad side of a barn. The Bucs will take a highly conservative approach of short passes and runs for fear that his erratic throws and inexperience could lead to pick 6s….that is, until they fall behind and are forced to open up. At least it will be interesting next week.

Mike C I don’t disagree. but I have got to believe that a big part is the play calling. Our personal groupings are showing no innovation. We are telegraphing so much. The defense knew what we were doing for the most part. With that said, the interior of our line has been bad!

Todd’s team has lost 10 of 12 games going back to last year. The HC should have been fired then and should absolutely be fired already. Write Todd a check and be done with it. His contract is guaranteed anyway. Beg Gruden to take over the offense and move our OC to HC as an interim. If we keep losing, we draft whoever we want next year. Go Bucs!

I don’t know what the fascination is that the Glazers have with Todd Bowles, but I am beginning to see how much Bruce Arians disliked them. He fostered Todd Bowles on them and has kept popping him up for the last 5 years. Starting with that debacle in the Rams Playoff game thru that utterly discussing performance on Sunday, Todd Bowles has proven to be a decent (although debatable) Def Coordinator and an absolutely horrible HC. I guess they are ok with the model of win a championship and then coast for years model, but they are definitely not a win every year type of ownership team.

Part of the reason I was happy to give Baker the extension is because I never thought “bad” would be bad enough to get a pick worthy of a high value qb prospect. My thoughts on Baker have not changed one iota, still a fan. But if we have a top 3 pick in a good qb draft those don’t come around often.
Don’t stress the contract. It’s short and by this time next year will be drawfed by others

I’m ok with starting Daniels for a month and losing 4 more in a row. This team is a train wreck only thing that can jump start our rebuild is getting pick 1 trading it for a bunch of picks. We can’t have Jason Licht picking anymore though.
Ebuka is a bust he can’t sit down in a zone he doesn’t come back to the Qb when a play breaks down he runs the route as intended but has no ability or feel for the game he is a slot receiver playing out of postion but has been terrible now for a out 12 weeks.
Oline he drafted all stink the pass rushers he drafted all stink. The safety he overpaid stinks this defense is terrible this offense is terrible the special teams outside the kicker are terrible.

How did Robinson do badly?
What I saw was an OL that only gave Mayfield time maybe 5 times? It collapsed all the other times.
What I saw were passcatchers dropping passes constantly.
The plays called were not the problem. The players were.
The defense was improved though. Not great but better.

Baker has made absolutely no pre-snap reads this season. Even the very best of coaches want QB’s that adjust plays based upon the pre snap defense that they are seeing.
If you hit on 5 of those a game, you are average. If you hit on 8 to 12 of those a game like Manning or Brady, you are elite.
Not asking for him to be elite there. But he has not been even average there this year.

If you go back and look at the Bucs offense with Coen
It wasn’t Coen system, it was more about the players he were playing
Robinson don’t have White and Evans, those 2 were the centerpiece of Coen offense
But for some reason, this backwards thinking fanbase.
Thought Tucker, Irving, Gainwell are better backs than Rachaad White
And they always thought EE, CG, are number one WRs.

There is a massive difference between designing a defense and running an entire football organization. A head coach has to establish accountability, preparation, culture, urgency, game management and a clear identity. Too often under Bowles, the Bucs look like 11 guys showing up to play football and hoping talent bails them out.

Bowles is done….Licht I can see getting another opportunity to pick a HC. People forget, Licht didn’t pick Lovie, Lovie was hired before Licht….Licht was forced to ride with Koetter in order to help develop Winston.
He nailed the Arians pick and all that followed with Brady & Co. Then was forced to run with Bowles due to Arians abrupt retirement. I think this team has talent and there will be a HC jumping to get onboard to compete in the weak division with a city that has great weather and no state taxes. I’m convinced the players have checked out on Bowles and by that I mean they are incredibly comfortable with him regardless of their results on the field. There is no fear of being held accountable, noboby gets their A$$ chewed if they commit a holding or kill a drive.

This is part of the LARGER problem – our GM stinks. THESE ARE HIS PLAYERS. HE PICKED THEM ALL. HE SET THE ROSTER. Browning was signed as a FA and didn’t even make it the roster! Rinse & repeat. When your 0-3 Head Coach tells owners & fans he has ‘no explanation’, you NEED a new Head Coach. The problems yesterday were obvious.
(1) Bucs committed 2 turnovers, bringing our 3-game total to 7 turnovers already.
(2) Mayfield was sacked 6 times & hit 12 times (if not more), bringing his sacks to 13 already after just 3 games.
(3) Bucs were only 2-of-17 on 3rd downs & 0-of-2 on 4th downs.
(4) Our S/Ts gave up an 86-yd punt return for a TD that turned out to be the winning margin.
(5) Bucs ran it 21 times for 57 yds (2.7 YPC) and our QB threw the ball 37 times but only completed 17 passes (46% Completions).
(6) And oh ya, the Bucs had 8 penalties ACCEPTED for 81 yds.
So Todd, IF you’re looking for explanations, you might start by having your coaching staff evaluate each of those 6 areas. You really don’t have to tell Bucs’ fans that your team has to ‘play better’. We have eyes.

TB is careful; he will not throw individual players or coaches under the bus in public (rarely). He could go off on the refs when they miss obvious penalties, and this has happened against this team, but also around the league (not sure how much gambling has to do with it). He also knows that he has 2 – 3 press conferences and sit-downs throughout the week. I believe changes are made throughout the week, but the ability to make game-time adjustments is his achilles heel; that will get him fired. This team has had 5 OC’s under Bowles, that is a recipe for disaster, and to be honest, say what you want, that’s why Mike Evans left. He knew the coach of the Niners was also an innovative OC with job security. He probably could have went home to Houston, but where was the OC job stability.

Coen makes no-name WRs and running backs look like stars. Brian Thomas Jr., arguably their “BEST” WR, doesn’t even catch balls. Some of you seriously don’t understand modern-day football. Jimmy’s and Joe’s doesn’t apply anymore. Everyone has TALENT. Every team has a loaded roster. That’s why you can have a 1- or 2-year turnaround with the right coaching.
Is the roster filled with Patrick Mahomes or Justin Jeffersons? No, it’s not. But Emeka Egbuka has the same raw talent as Jaxon Smith-Njigba. It’s just not being utilized correctly. There are only five top players at every position. You are not going to have THE BEST GUY IN THE NFL at every position.
The roster isn’t the problem. It’s coaching. And, well, Baker.
Personally, I think Baker would be a much, much better QB with Coen as head coach. Look at Lawrence. He was on his way out of the NFL before Coen arrived, and now they look like one of the best offenses in the league. I wonder why??
Oh, and they have an old Bucs lineman in Hainsey. But yeah, it’s the talent. You people are ridiculous sometimes.
Yeah, the Bucs suck, and who didn’t see this coming when we retained Bowles? We all hoped, prayed, and wanted more, but realistically, who thought this was going to be any different than last year? We wanted it to be different as fans, but we knew the coach sucked and had already proven that.
Even with Bain — a hand-in-the-dirt pass rusher who should be going forward — or let’s take this a step further: when Walker gets in the game and you let him rush, he has two sacks. Yet he only gets a handful of snaps a game.
It makes no sense.
Why? Because Bowles wants him to be able to cover and play two-gap, 3-4 OLB instead of being a one-gap DE who attacks upfield. He’s a loser coach with a loser mentality that makes his players do things they don’t want to do, which ruins the mood, vibe, and feel of the team.
Then Baker plays hero ball, and now he can’t complete a pass because the scheme doesn’t get anyone open. And when it does, he can’t get the ball out with good timing.
The one and only happy thought, though, is that Baker can literally turn this around at any point. He can start hitting these throws like we’ve seen him make in the past, and all of a sudden, the Bucs can go 10-0.
But it’s 1000% on Baker at this point. The other team is filled with NFL players too. When there’s a play to be made, he needs to make it and stop overthrowing and underthrowing receivers.

You not knowing who Brian Thomas Jr says more about you than anything else, kid caught 87 passes for 1200 yards & 10 TDs as a rookie, but to you he’s a “no name” WR. C’mon man, you talk about coaches are brought in and everything just changes, Coen had the luxury of taking that team over with 2 first round picks in his pocket or NINE total draft picks in a 7 round draft ’25.
It’s not just coaches that make a difference, you need the players to get the program off the ground and moving forward.
