Official Ruling: Baker Mayfield Has Dislocated Thumb On Throwing Hand

As Bucs fans watching on TV saw, Baker Mayfield scrambled and scrambled and scrambled late on a fourth-quarter fourth down play and it ended with Mayfield getting hit and dislocating his thumb.
Bucs head coach Todd Bowles confirmed the injury in his postgame news conference.
Bowles said it’s impossible to know what Mayfield’s return timetable might be until he has an MRI on the thumb, likely tomorrow.
Bowles acknowledged that it’s likely undrafted rookie backup Jalen Daniels will start next Sunday against the Packers.
Joe’s not going to blame Mayfield for getting hurt, like Joe sees some fans doing on social media.
Might Mayfield have been better of giving up on the play sooner or trying to run for postive yardage sooner? Joe will say Mayfield’s decision-making was not on point for most of the game.

Some of us on here said Mayfield was meh from the beginning when Trask outplayed him. Mayfield missed so many easy passes in this game, I threw my remote (thankfully at the couch – no remotes were hurt in the watching of this game). Tired of this. Tired of it!!!!! I hate he got injured (don’t like to see it) but I’m glad he won’t be playing for a while. When he comes back, maybe he’ll learn how to hit his targets. By then, maybe we will have lost enough games to get rid of Bowles. I’m convinced this staff is full of poor teachers because our players seem to be getting worse with every game they play here.

Baker plays his game, and his game naturally exposes him to some things that are risky. But you can’t expect him change the way he plays. You just have to hope he can avoid as many injuries as possible and the Bucs are ready to find ways to win when he isn’t 100%.

They really need to sit him regardless, just for his own sake and the teams sake. Things have gotten so bad to where it’s getting very dangerous to his health. His play style does not help. Until they get things figured out (if they can), I would not force anything, let the man rest and regroup mentally. As far as Daniels goes, for anyone trying to ask an unprepared undrafted rookie to come in and throw a touchdown 75 yards away with 33 seconds left, is a complete lunatic, and has no right to scrutinize him on how he did, good or bad. Prep Daniels and make a game plan for him over the next couple of weeks and see how he does. The team has nothing to lose at this point.

I think all the top NFL prospects will refuse to play for Tampa knowing they have the boat anchor that is Baker’s contract on the books for years to come. College players have a lot of leverage now, more than in the past, and no top QB prospect is going to want to come to a team that has Baker and his awful contract eating up a ton of cap space, and with Baker’s history of throwing hissy fits when he’s got legit competition.
I still don’t think we’ll be that bad… but I’m not so sure any more.

A big part of the issue today wasn’t the offensive line, it was the non-offensive line, it was the RB’s and TE’s getting ran over, or around. That’s the role that White filled for years, and he was fantastic at it.
When they signed Gainwell, people dumbly told me that he was a better blocked than White, no idea how those morons came to that conclusion, but we are seeing that White is severely missed.
They have to get Durham off the field, he’s a bum. They need to get Ko back in there as well – he’s the blocking specialist. Bucky, meanwhile, isn’t a bad blocker for his size, but he can only do so much – and Gainwell hasn’t shown much yet. But Durham is terrible, and Otton isn’t a great blocker either – White was vastly superior to those guys.

This is what happens when you pick Todd Bowles over Liam Coen. In 2024, Coen gave us a top-5 offense, a 5.3 YPC run game, and a 40-TD year from Baker. But Tampa’s brain trust decided a 35–35 coach who barely scraped through a trash 8–9 division was the future. Jacksonville snatched Coen, went 13–4 with a top-6 scoring unit, and left us watching our offense crash into a brick wall.
We handed away a genius play-caller to protect a defensive coach who couldn’t even hold a lead last week. Baker looks like the guy Carolina CUT! Trevor Lawrence was on his way out of the league just like Baker—until Coen saved him. Sure, it’s about the Jimmys and Joes, but if you don’t have elite talent, it is 100% about the X’s and O’s.
BOWLES SUCKS!! And Baker isn’t good without an ELITE play-caller giving him easy reads, quick progressions, and masking his inability to hold back his urge to run!

That play was the 4th & 13 from the middle of the field with 2 minutes left.
All these years we have seen Coach B playing conservative, playing not to lose instead of playing to win.
After all these years a moment comes when the decision to punt was probably the better option and we go on a 4th & 13 in a day that the QB is 17/34 and we have like 30 yds total in 8 possesions on the 2nd half.
I dont know what to think anymore, what to say anymore.
We have seen some bad games over the years, we have seen a few shutouts but today the Offense played one of the worst games I have ever seen.

That’s about our only hope since we can’t afford a good veteran quarterback anymore. Wish so many fans hadn’t somehow pushed to pay that bum. Opposing player detonated on a ball eight into my block and it hit my thumb directly when I stupidly was reaching into the angle.
It took FOREVERRRRRR to heal and it’s still not right…..

If Baker hadn’t extended plays when he wasn’t protected, there wouldn’t have been any plays today. Im exaggerating, obviously, but not by much.

or a true thumb dislocation, plan on at least 6 weeks before full contact basketball or football if the joint was put back in place, is stable, and there’s no fracture. The ligaments often take 6–8 weeks or longer to heal. A fracture, torn ligament, or surgery can extend that timeline.

When it becomes the norm, it becomes HIS FAULT. If this had just been a FLUKE PLAY, that rarely ever happens to HIM… Then, yes. Definitely NOT his fault. But, that is farrrrr from being the case here. It’s a literal broken record with Mayfield. Hell, he doesn’t care.

I am guessing that JJ Roberts and Stick will be elevated for GB – assuming no IR I am guessing Baker McMillan Trotter Bain Nacho and two linemen will be inactive – Daniels will start with Stick backup – what a nightmare – although I will interested to see how the new QB does
