Baker Being Baker Has Become Part Of The Problem

The Bucs are now on a collective 12-game run with Baker Mayfield playing like a below average quarterback.
That’s no small sample size.
Last year it was injuries. Mayfield went from MVP candidate to banged up and struggling. It was understandable behind a makeshift offensive line and a rookie playaller.
This year, he was healthy for three games before the second-to-last drive tonight. His heralded offensive line was healthy, and Mayfield has a veteran offensive coordinator he helped handpick. Oh, and don’t forget Mayfield was given a fat contract he demanded because he and Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager evaluated him to be an upper tier quarterback.
Mayfield’s decision-making has been off through three weeks and Joe can’t muster a decent excuse. Because there isn’t one.
How the hell did Mayfield eat a sack on a two-minute drive late in the first half today on first down? There were so many rough decisions. Joe has to go back to the film to count them all.
And now Mayfield has a dislocated throwing thumb and an 0-3 record.
Joe also is doing a lot of head-shaking about how Mayfield’s leadership has let the Bucs down. Remember, “it’s not playoff time yet.”
Joe would love to see the Bucs bring in an offensive brain, a consultant, to start studying Mayfield and the current broken offense.
The days of blaming Josh Grizzard and thinking Zac Robinson will find a magic fix without any action shouldn’t continue.

This is what happens when you pick Todd Bowles over Liam Coen. In 2024, Coen gave us a top-5 offense, a 5.3 YPC run game, and a 40-TD year from Baker. But Tampa’s brain trust decided a 35–35 coach who barely scraped through a trash 8–9 division was the future. Jacksonville snatched Coen, went 13–4 with a top-6 scoring unit, and left us watching our offense crash into a brick wall.
We handed away a genius play-caller to protect a defensive coach who couldn’t even hold a lead last week. Baker looks like the guy Carolina CUT! Trevor Lawrence was on his way out of the league just like Baker—until Coen saved him. Sure, it’s about the Jimmys and Joes, but if you don’t have elite talent, it is 100% about the X’s and O’s.
BOWLES SUCKS!! And Baker isn’t good without an ELITE play-caller giving him easy reads, quick progressions, and masking his inability to hold back his urge to run!

The Glazers are the problem. Let’s say they let Bowles go for Cohen and didn’t pay Baker as much as they did when they did. We’d be in better shape. Baker is sucking, but so is his line, some receivers with dumb drops, a D that was not as good as the score showed. We are bad all around.

Joe this is a terrible article. Did you not watch the game? They were in our backfield almost the second the ball was snapped. This game was on the oline and the offensive coordinator inability to adjust. Idc if he had to put two running backs in the backfield to chip block you have to adjust. Use two tight end sets, go hurry up, something anything!! Zac Robinson, Todd Bowles, and Jason Licht should all be fired.

i really did enjoy watching this game tho…
it was a dog fight…

i even saw winfield sort of trying to get involved…
it was really good to see our defense begin to try and define themselves…it’s been a minute for sure…
real ugly-ish old school type game on a lot of levels…it was good to see…
this game convinced me the bucs season has started…they somewhat showed up…(not the passing game really tho)…
the first 2 games i was still convinced we were maybe still in preseason mode…
but this game showed me a few things…not much…but a few…
at 0-3 tho, we are legit circling the drain…and at 0-4 or 1-4 in the next couple weeks we will be de@ad and buried

also egbuka is a problem – he lacks the ability to separate big time – and it’s only going to get worse as he ages…
and he doesn’t get out of breaks well, or cut on a dime…thus little separation…

I get that he is tough.
I get that some plays he makes running around make the fans and the team love him.
I get all that.
But honestly sometimes the best play you can make is throw the ball out of bounds.
The Offense so far this season looks like they are on the first day at mini camp.
I have not seen a QB and his receivers being so out of touch. Its all over the place and of course is not only on Mayfield. But some of it is.

Baker is laughing all the way to 109 million guaranteed. Yes, he’ll show the proper emotion and take the blame but what an incredible stroke of luck to sign a guaranteed contract when he did. The Mayfield family will be grateful forever.

Those of you trying to just blame the o-line, Baker had a dozen plays (counted them) where he had time and threw the ball to the open receiver, only to overthrow or throw to the side of them. He couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. He’s just getting worse. He’s never been a great QB. HE IS NOT A FRANCHISE QB, AND NEVER HAS BEEN!!! You Baker lovers have been so clamped onto his package that you can’t see the forest for the trees. He’s always sucked more than been good. I, Rod, and several others have been saying this since the “competition” where Trask consistently had a significantly higher YPC than Baker in that pre-season, and against Baker’s regular season performance, but yet still lost. Trask could actually hit deep balls fairly consistently. Last week, Baker missed 6 easy, wide-open deep balls. This is Baker. It doesn’t get any better. That short MVP run he had early last year was just a mirage. He reverted the rest of the season and here we are.

Like many of us, I was against the Mayfield extension. He was under contract and the Bucs held the tag for ’27.
There was no reason to sign him? Why? Because he was pouting? Largest contract in Bucs history has become the largest mistake in Bucs history – and that’s saying something.
He’s an average QB that plays with passion but the results speak for themselves.

The issue is simple….Mayfield is on his 5th different OC in 5 yrs AND Mike Evans left. There’s literally nobody in our WR group that is unstoppable in jump ball scenarios meaning they either win the catch OR absolutely make sure the opponent doesn’t intercept it. Evans was that guy and looking back on Bucs history when Evans was out, our offense no matter the QB was inept. Evans changed the dynamics of the offense….Godwin benefited from it, Godwin doesn’t impact the offense in a similar fashion. There’s hardly any separation on WR….with Evans that didn’t matter because he would just get the catch. But this group simply isn’t as good and nobody is threatening the defense deep. Evans required a safety for help. A good play caller could scheme people open….our guy can’t. This team should honestly fire Bowles and promote the OC to see if maybe he calls games differently if Bowles isn’t looking over his shoulder. I doubt we change much but might as well see if the vibe at least changes with Bowles gone.

Reality is with good QB play, this team is 3-0.
With decent QB play they are 2-1.
With Baker they are 0-3.
Has the oline been a problem? Yep
Has the OC been bad? Yep
But the highest paid player in franchise history has been AWFUL.
I told everyone there was NO reason to sign Baker to a huge new deal. The risk was WAY too big and it’s playing out right in front of us. He’s been terrible and now injured.
If they end up with a top 3 pick and pass on a QB because of this contract, it’ll be the final nail in this franchise coffin for years to come.

O for goodness sake… when you run on first down, every time (flashbacks from Dave Canales) for a very small gain, you put yourself behind on 2 nd and 3rd.
There’s NO way those refs could miss the head slaps, late hits, the facemask grabs, the holds and the dirty play by the Viking Defense. I thought the inking coaching staff had more class than that.

There was t a single thing that made ANY SENSE about it. I mean, THE ONLY WAY you jump at putting out that type of contract is at A DISCOUNT. Period. End of Story. You know a lot was made of the contrast between Tom Brady’s preparation style and attitude in practice and games compared to Mayfield. Even the offensive lineman were like, we can enjoy the game again. With Brady it was serious, all business and of course 7 Super Bowls including one in Tampa. Even Brady said would you rather have fun all the time or win Super Bowls? Apparently having fun at practice, being buddies with all your teammates doesn’t win Super Bowls.

Defense Rules has said a few times that Baker has looked shell shocked at times since halfway through last season. I thought it was something else. I was wrong about that. He doesn’t just look shell shocked at times. He looks shell shocked most of the time. He also looks like he’s not having fun. His body language looks bad, his decision making isn’t as sharp as usual, and he’s not doing his job.
Missing a couple games would do him a world of good. Especially if we can win just enough to stay alive. A little different perspective might help. Wouldn’t hurt him, and the team, to know that they’re quite capable of winning without Baker.

I mean, as an OWNER of the franchise, you’d THINK that you’d have enough freaking SENSE to NOT just ‘blindly’ TRUST LICKT, by now!? INSTEAD of just absolutely ‘HANDCUFFING’ YOURSELF, with such a monstrosity of a contract being ‘tied-to’ BAKER FREAKING MAYFIELD… In return, immediately ‘lowering’ you pool of ‘potential’ Head Coaches (and GM’s). Thus, making it virtually IMPOSSIBLE NOW, to hire one of the ‘top-tier’ HOT YOUNG STUD HC/Play-Caller and GM combos, that are littered across the nation right now!!!! It’s backyard football, and Baker Mayfield will forever from this day forward be known as “Backyard” Mayfield. He probably feels that he has to improvise on the fly because either he or the receivers don’t understand the routes. Either that or the receivers drop the ball. When he got the ball out of his hands, he was effective. After the touchdown to Hurst, he disappeared for the rest of the game.

Because, you do know that it will be AT LEAST, 3-YEARS NOW, before we’ll even be able to do ANYTHING AT ALL, in free-agency… Right!?
The Broncos just got LUCKY. They already HAD a STRONG ROSTER. We DON’T (and it’s getting ready to get MUCH WORSE). And, thy hired a super ‘aggressive’ militant-type HOF Head Coach, who also happens to be a GENIUS “Play-Caller,” AND a Quarterback freaking WHISPERER. And, they JUST NOW, barely had enough cap space to FINALLY, go out and get them a #1-WR.
The ONLY “MOVE” is to BUILD. THE. ROSTER. FIRST. By extending Baker, they took a 2-year ‘rebuild’ with the ‘right’ HC and GM combo, where they could have been ‘legitimate’ Super Bowl Contenders by 2029… To NOW, being a loooong road ahead, and NO-TELLING, WHEN. But, a “QUARTERBACK!?” Forget THAT. I mean, for WHAT!? It’s not going to do a DAMN THING. BUILD. THE. ROSTER. FIRST. These owners allowed LICKT to literally, SCREW THE FRANCHISE.

You sign a solid vet “bridge” on the CHEAP. And, you BUILD. THE. ROSTER. FIRST. Drew Lock is only making $2.5-MIL. And, Mac Jones, $5-MIL. It doesn’t matter “WHO” you get… Just as long as they are CHEAP. Because, it is IRRELEVANT. A ‘Rookie’ Quarterback ain’t doin JACK SPIT with THIS ROSTER. If you DRAFT a 1st-Round QB next year, they’re going to be anywhere, from probably $10-$20-MIL per year, anyway! Though, it’s completely pointless, since it will be an entirely DEPLETED ROSTER. There are NO-RULES, staring that you have to DRAFT a QB LoL. And, this upcoming draft-class is just soooo LOADED. At MANY other, VERY important and valuable positions. They need VOLUME. And, they need YOUNG PLAYERS at literally EVERY POSITION, that they can ‘BUILD’ around. So, again… BUILD. THE. ROSTER. FIRST. 💯

We don’t have the TALENT. And, Baker is not good enough to get this type of TEAM to being true legit CONTENDERS. So, that means, that he is NOT and NEVER WAS worth a LONGTERM EXTENSION, at ‘Max-Level’ MONEY. Period. End of Story.

We’re stuck with Baker. No o e is going to eat any of his salary in a trade. He IS the bridge QB… a super expensive one.
The Bucs really screwed the pooch on this. Could have had him under his current deal this year and tagged him next year if necessary. Glazers and Bud Licht did exactly the wrong thing. Another lost decade is cued up….

I mean, just look at the TALENT even the “BAD TEAMS” like the Jets and the Browns. Hell, look at ATL… ALL UNDER 25-YEARS OLD, too!!!! Bijan. London. Pitts. Walker. Watts. Pearce Junior. I mean, THAT IS “ELITE.” Even, throw the “Big-Penix” in there with them still, potentially. That’s SEVEN. Mostly, at very valuable ‘positions’ on the field. Hell, THE MOST valuable positions. It’s THE NFL. Where, EVERYONE has “TALENT.” But, do you have enough “ELITE” talent, in order to COMPETE against the TOP teams in the league today, and to be a true legitimate “Super Bowl” CONTENDER. Otherwise, if NOT… Then, what else are we even DOING HERE, THEN!? Seriously. As a franchise OWNER, you have to be able to have the proper ‘instincts’ to be able to assess such things. I mean, you look at the amount of YOUNG TALENT on all of these teams around the league, that THEY all have that they can BUILD AROUND. And, we don’t even really have that type of “TALENT,” at ALL. We have a few nice pieces, but THAT’S IT. No one, who you would call “ELITE.” That is also, YOUNG. Because, of course, we still have WIRFS. For now.
