How safe is Bucs OC Zac Robinson?
It’s getting to the point where Joe wonders if Bucs offensive coordinator Zac Robinson may be a sacrificial lamb in the near future.
The Joe typing here is absolutely adamant that, short of KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles cursing out Team Glazer, Bowles will be the Bucs coach through the end of the season. That’s just how Team Glazer rolls.
That does not mean everyone is safe. Team Glazer could order Bowles to dismiss Robinson. Or Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht could step over Bowles and tell Robinson to clean out his office.
Yes, it is that bad.
Also remember, Bowles last year threw Josh Grizzard under the bus, blaming him for the sad offensive showing in 2025. Who is to say he wouldn’t do the same to Robinson?
Bowles, after the game tonight, touted how the Bucs are only one game behind for first place in the NFC South landfill. Bowles itsn’t wrong but he needs to start worrying about winning a game before he starts sweating over division standings.
The Bucs offense is absolutely atrocious. When you try to turn Cade Otton into the primary focus of your passing game, your offense is fully effed up.
(Yes, Joe knows Liam Coen and Baker Mayfield did just that in 2024. That’s because both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin were hurt. Even if Jalen McMillan is lost for some time, the Bucs still have four of their top five receivers healthy.)
And if you listen to folks around the league, they cannot believe the Bucs offense, laden with proven talent, is this bad.
Who had the bright idea of making Otton, an average tight end, the key to the passing offense? For what are you paying Chris Godwin? Why did you draft Emeka Egbuka? You have an emerging Ted Hurst and even Bucky Irving to throw to.
And Otton is the best option?

Hell, the way this Bucs offense is going, the Bucs would be smart to call Grizzard in Philadelphia and say, “Josh, we’re sorry. We screwed up. We’re buying your contract. Please come back.”
When A’Shawn Robinson found a piece of gold when he picked off Kyler Murray to give the Bucs a first down on the Vikings-22, here is how Robinson’s vaunted offense performed:
First down: Bucky runs to the left for three yards.
Second down: Mayfield throws incomplete.
Third down: Mayfield is sacked for a one-yard loss.
Fourth down: Field goal.
The Bucs sure do like field goals.
Robinson may just get a pass on second thought. Joe isn’t sure if the Bucs want to promote from within and have an undrafted rookie free agent have to learn a new offense on top of likely starting against the Packers next week.

he is as bad as coach as we have ever had. We need to go ahead and tank get pick 1 and trade it. Bears traded pick 1 to Carolina for two firsts two seconds and DJ Moore.
Carolina was desperate to draft Young 1 overall get a franchise Qb. Somebody will give us the same package for Manning.
We need a GM though who can draft last thing we want is Licht drafting with this picks. We need a GM who can evaluate talent his oline which is supposed to be his bread and butter is worst in the NFL. He cant draft a pass rusher he cant sign a pass rusher.
I think it’s time to clean house stock pile picks and rebuild. Im ok with Tomlin most fans aren’t but id be thrilled to get a proven veteran coach.

I’m sure some might disagree with me but I’m kind of wondering if they should consider signing Tyreek. He’ll probably help open things up with that offense the way Evans did & they need that again. Yeah he’s still recovering from the injury but it might help that offense. They’re not the same with Evans gone. Of course the OL needs to help out, too!

I’m just going to say something crazy here…
But what if the issue isn’t everyone BUT the quarterback?
What if the issue is the guy who has the ball in his hands the vast majority of the time? What if the guy who is overthrowing, underthrowing, throwing to the wrong side of players who are wide open, the guy who can’t hit a WR who is standing still and is wide open in a zone, and Baker misses him.
Ooops, I didn’t mean to say any names. My bad. This is just a thought exercise.

I think Baker needs to take a seat, and the offense needs Baker to take a seat. Never seen his confidence this low, and his body language is not instilling any confidence in his offense.
Maybe beat the Packers with Daniels next week is the best thing for the team and for Baker.

The offense does seem designed for a different quarterback. Drop back, sit in a clean pocket for awhile, read the defense and make accurate downfield throws isn’t what we do even what when we were winning.

The time for fixing this was last January. Nothing, coaching or otherwise, will spur any success.
Godwin makes 33 million this year and isn’t targeted. Winfield gets 27 million and just isn’t worth it.
The trade deadline should be interesting.

Back in Koetter’s last season, 2018, Smitty’s D got boatraced to start the season, giving up 40 in a Fitzmagic win vs the Saints and 48 going into a bye to the Bears. Everyone wanted Smitty launched but Koetter said no one was going anywhere. After the bye, the D got shredded again by the Falcons and Smiity was gone the next day. Koetter acted out of desperation and likely pressure and an ultimatum from OBP. I could see this repeating itself with Bowles, I thought Todd would be forced to give up playcalling but he might launch the OC to buy some time and hope to turn thiings around.

Who needs a surgeon at quarterback with a lightning-fast release and pinpoint accuracy when:
Your receivers are playing hot potato with the football.** Nothing builds team chemistry quite like treating a routine 8-yard slant like a grenade with the pin pulled. Who needs completion percentage when you can have dramatically dropped passes on third-and-short?
The booth is calling your plays before you even break the huddle.** You know your offense is operating at peak performance when the announcers are sitting in the press box casually dictating your playbook in real-time. *”Looks like run-left, pass-deep, run-up-the-middle on 3rd & 11.”* It’s not play-calling; it’s a public service announcement for the defense.
* **A “quick decision” just means deciding which defender to throw near faster.** Why spend time analyzing coverage when the end result is a 2-yard dive up the middle on 1st, 2nd, and long anyway?
Honestly, at this point, they should just let the announcers call the plays over the PA system—at least the stadium would know what’s coming, which isn’t any different from the opposing linebackers right now.
Oh, and when they don’t predict the play before the snap, Baker can’t deliver an accurate pass to save his life. Even if he did, the WR or TE wouldn’t catch it anyway—and if by some miracle they do, it will just be called back on a penalty.

I noticed Baker is rushing his passes. Even when pressure is not there. Then instead of stepping up through the pass rush he runs right into it. I don’t know if it’s Baker or the OC or both. I do know the offense looked better and more fluid last year with Grizzard but that’s not saying much.

Kenton – I’m feeling the same – that there could be a spark with Daniels at QB. Find some success and hopefully we wake up. I saw fight from the D today. IF Jalon sparks the O, things could get entertaining. However, the goal is to clean sweep the coaching staff, so hoping we don’t go 8-9 or some crap and keep Bowles.

Bucs should have gone with Dan Pitcher for OC. Everyone could see Zac Robinson was a failed OC with the Falcons. He has continued to be a dismal OC with the Bucs. That’s the collective failure of Licht & Bowles. Another problem with always giving into Baker’s preferences.

Interesting?, all I can say. I admit I was at the game. I thought well the defense is playing decent. If the offense could do something we would win. However play after play the offense was awful. Bucky every first down up the middle. Yes Zac is pretty bad but Baker is his equal today. He was flat out missing receivers and that is not Zac’s fault. Well if you’re changing OC in the middle of the season then you may as well change the qb. The o line is nothing to write home about. I actually think watching Jalen play might be refreshing. I mean he is fun to watch and I have no expectations. I mean I don’t think he would be any worse. Joe it is time to hold Baker accountable.

At this level, sports really do come down to the little things. It sounds cliche, but it’s true. The NFL is built on parity, and most teams are closer than people think. A lot of games come down to who actually executes.
The Bucs just aren’t doing that right now. The offensive line gave up six sacks, and Baker probably escaped four more. Mayfield and Kenny Gainwell literally ran into each other on a handoff because they weren’t on the same page. Open receivers were reaching for balls that weren’t close. Goedeke wipes out an 85-yard play with a holding penalty. Then when they actually needed to push the ball downfield, we’re trying to scheme open Cade Otton or throwing deep to Tez Johnson in double coverage.
At some point, that becomes a coaching issue. Players have to execute, but execution is built during the week. It comes from practice, film sessions, correcting mistakes, holding guys accountable and taking some pride in getting the details right. These aren’t impossible things to fix. It’s sloppy football, and when the same little mistakes keep showing up, you have to wonder why they aren’t getting fixed before Sunday.

Jalon certainly has a cannon for an arm. Strangely when he launched that last one to the end zone, it had a glimmer of something attached to it. Mayfield would’ve been sacked for a loss on the play.

When I heard about the hiring I said cool the dude from ATL with all that talent couldn’t do S#it .I’m wishing in one hand and having s#it pile in another. We got the dudes straight up it’s just the bs calls. Why hasn’t tez gotten more looks? No more Godwin hardly? Why aren’t we doing more delayed screens? Gainwell use is non existent and bake over threw him then it’s f*cking obvious when he’s wide open. I break this loss down to being out coached. Bowles is consistently out coached week in and week out. Players say NFL is a business all this money gone? Who’s the first of the players to free up cap or eat dead money. Who’s the lamb here? I know these dudes are trying their best but why the F*ck is walker not on the field more? Why isn’t scott? Mfers say it’s an ego driven league and our team gets cute. Dudes getting results sit on the side it’s a miserable bucs life covered up by a few good Brady years the last twenty.
Btw bowles our team does a hell of a lot better in man than zone. Parrish is solid and forgive the td he gave up but GD seeing the same poop isn’t doing it. We’ve gotten complacent and it shows. Don’t blow it up at all put in better coaching.why the F isn’t foote stepping up with olbs covering rbs?

Watching league highlights. Lot of bad football. The further we are from the Coen year, the more I see how a good oc is like a free ticket to 10 wins. Like many qbs, a great oc can make a career. Trevor has been reborn. Unless your Josh Allen , overcoming sub standard play calling and line protection is a big ask. I recall baker, djmoore, and mcafferty all on the same offense in Carolina. But poor coaching and o line play made them ineffective. Explains how geno smith had those good years in Seattle. Jim plunket turned career round in raider land. Baker hasn’t forgotten how to play good football. Cousins , suddenly, is effective again …. A good oc is gold.

We’ll see if he plays, I still expect Baker to get the start.
However, that’s a tall task. Daniels, while I like him, he’s still a rookie UDFA, and they rarely perform well when asked to play early in their careers.
At the same time, can he really play much worse than Baker?
Well, yes, he can – but 0-3 means the Bucs haven’t won, so losing by 3 or by 30, it sounds the same.
And we are stuck with Baker for years to come, so I’m still hoping he snaps out of it – and if Daniels actually looks good, maybe that’s what Baker needs, maybe some legit competition gets his attention and gets him back on track.
At the same time, if Daniels does look great, and plays like a legit NFL starter, man, that would really offset Baker’s contract since Daniels would be dirt cheap for years to come. But, again, I don’t expect anything like that.

Rod Munch, Baker’s first couple of years I thought you were too hard on Baker, but mid-season last year until now, I’m in total agreement. And any broadcaster saying he misses Mike Evans should be ashamed of saying that.
Baker is missing targets by a large margin on almost every pass and that’s not receivers running the wrong route or turning the wrong direction, it’s Baker May-be-in-the-Field passes that are that far off.
Baker record since the first 1/3 of 2025 is now 3-11. Yep, that’s right, 3 wins and 11 loses.
Baker Mayfield’s win-loss percentage since coming to TB is 47%. Jameis Winston’s was just under that at 45%.
Watching more and more college ball this winter, Bucs need to find a new QB.

Unfortunately Robinson can’t play Todd Bowles twice a year to give the illusion of competency. Two words:Liam Coen. He’s making Bust Trevor Lawrence look like a good QB. I will never understand keeping Bowles over him. This is worse than the Jameis years because we’ve tasted success recently. This is just sad

CalBucsFan – I thought Baker was very middling in 2023, the issue I had was people talking about him like he was a top QB, when he didn’t play like one. But, I absolutely said he played well enough to get extended, just not the top tier money people seemed to assume he’d get. And guess what, he didn’t get top tier money, he got middling money.
In 2024, I said much of the year, Baker was playing great – but review the comments – I said much of that was do to the remarkable job Coen was doing. Coen was not predictable, was using a ton of misdirection, and Coen changed up the offense after the first few games when he realized Baker stunk at throwing the deep ball — and Sucke was starting at tackle and was awful. But in week 4 that year, that’s when Coen really went into high gear, after Baker was terrible vs the Broncos, Coen changed up the offense, started throwing a lot of quick strike passes, just short easy stuff where Baker excels, and that’s when he really took off. At the same time, Baker would still fail to make plays in big moments, choked, and of course in the playoffs was a complete bum.
In 2025, I didn’t get people falling all over themselves when he was having bad games, like vs the Jets and Eagles – but obviously he had a pretty fantastic 2-week run vs the Seahawks and 49ers. My issue, however, was all the idiots chanting MVP. It’s week 6 and these morons are changing MVP after 2 good games? Huh? Also I couldn’t take the people saying Baker was winning games all by themselves because I 100% knew those same people would blame everyone else when Baker started losing games. And of course, starting in week 7 of last year, Baker started his now, nearly one-year slide towards being the QB he’s been the rest of his career – the guy that gets all his coaches fired.

Also, as pointed out previously… Winston played in an NFC South where he was facing league MVP Cam Newton, League MVP and first ballot HOF’er Matt Ryan, and was facing first ballot HOF’er Drew Brees. He was facing all those guys while they were in their prime.
Baker is facing who? Bryce Young, and whoever the QB of the week is in Atlanta and New Orleans (and yes, the Saints now have their QB of the future, but Baker has only faced him once, and lost).
