Big Gamble On Bucs Imploding

August 24th, 2022

Gambler banks on doom.

And you thought you knew Bucs fans wigging out about the offensive line!

Joe understands some Bucs fans are shaken after starting center Ryan Jensen and potential starting left guard Aaron Stinnie blew out their knees. Then throw in that the guys projected to replace them, Robert Hainsey along with either rookie Luke Goekeke or Nick Leverett, have a combined total of zero NFL, and Joe can fully appreciate how fans are chugging Mylanta.

This apparently has a guy in Louisiana so triggered that he has wagered on the Bucs to have the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft next spring.

That’s right, a panicking Bucs fan (or could it be a too eager slimy Saints fan?) dropped $250 on the Bucs to end up with the worst record in the NFL this fall.

The only thing Joe can think is that the distraught Bucs fan/giddy slimy Saints fan believes Tom Brady will get knocked out of the opening game at Dallas and be lost for the season. And then the Bucs would be banking on Blaine Gabbert and/or Kyle Trask to save them.

Man, even if Brady got hurt, Joe believes the Bucs defense could be good enough to carry them to a wild card. Yeah, Joe typed that.

If this nightmare actually plays out, there might be a bright side: the Bucs would have their pick of two college quarterbacks from two historic programs that haven’t produced a decent NFL signal-caller since Kenny Stabler was drafted 54 years ago, C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young.

It’s Jeff! He placed that bet before Brady re-emerged yesterday.

  2. Bucs Win Says:

    Stroud?

  3. Bucs Win Says:

    $troud?

  4. Maniac Buc Says:

Alabama has produced Hurts and Tua. I think both guys will still be starting in the league a decade from now.

  5. Goatfarmer Says:

Has Stroud gone negative? I don’t read that Fishwrap any more. When Mizell retired it went to the dogs.

  6. tampabayallday Says:

    Definitely Stroud

  7. German Buc Says:

Was expecting much more than 250$…

  8. Rod Munch Says:

I wouldn’t exactly say $250 is a ‘big gamble’… And a $112k payoff? That is a heck of a payoff, and if the Bucs had Gabbert or Trask as the starting QB, you’re talking about battling with Seattle for the worst QB in football like it’s 1976 all over again.

Of course, barring injury, that’s not the case. But man, that’s some odds. I do think it’s insanely unlikely, that even without Brady, the Bucs would be worse than Seattle, Chicago or Atlanta, but it’d be close. I can’t image trying to watch Gabbert quarterback this team, it would be like watching Rob Johnson QB the team in 2002 and knowing he is single handedly losing the game, when all he had to do is hand the ball off and the could ride the defense to a 6-3 victory.

    “It’s Jeff!”

    {}{}{}{}{}

    LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    It probably IS Jeff.

  10. Winny Testaverde Says:

Bucs wouldn’t break .500 let alone win a wild card spot without Brady. They would potentially finish 4th in the NFC South. Yeah…Winny typed/texted that. 🙂

  11. captivajim Says:

but , not to worry ; Bowles is just fine “playing rookies “

  12. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

Winny, I actually disagree with ya a bit there. I honestly think that the team is talented enough that even with Blaine Gabbert (in his more mature years now & having spent alot of time with Brady)…. that the BUCS could go at least 10-7 and get into the playoffs.

I could be completely off my rocker. But I think there is enough there to work with for that to be the case.

    Now Kyle Trask?
Not yet. No. There have been good signs at times, and been bad signs at times. Not really sure what to make of the Trask experiment, going forward down the road. But I hope it is good.

  13. BucsfanFred Says:

    What a foolish bet.

  14. Winny Testaverde Says:

TB Demon…I appreciate your perspective and positivity. I just think the team relies that heavily on Brady. I’m not near as “bullish” as Joe on the defense…last time we saw them ( with Suh and Whitehead no less )…they were horrifyingly awful. Gabbert looked ok closing out blowout wins…but locked in a tight game…color me less than confident. Hopefully we won’t have to find out.

  15. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

Fair enough, Winny. And don’t get me wrong… when it comes to Brady, I am with you 100%. — He is INSTANT SB Contender good. He is one of a kind.

I think the Defense may surprise you this year. A little faster… a little more fresh.

    Let’s hope. GO BUCS

  16. sasquatch Says:

Even if you think they’ll be good to great, a 450-1 payout is a nice bet. Worst record in the league though? I’d say no chance of that at all.

  17. Crickett Baker Says:

LOL LOL Where do you get this stuff, Joes? hahahahaha

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

    Gotta disagree.
I think we lose Brady- we are right back to suck.
Not the worst in the league, but definitely suck.

  19. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

The roster is very very strong, though, Capt. Tim.
    Disagree?

  20. Mr Bean Says:

If there was complete parity in the NFL, one out or 32 teams will finish last at random and the odds of that happening would be 32-1. The fact that the Bucs bet was 450-1 just shows how much better than average the Bucs are. It is unlikely there are more than a couple of teams with lower odds of finishing last. This is a non-story.

  21. steele Says:

I’m not good at calculations regarding this bet, but the possibility of a losing season is not that crazy a bet. With this season’s problems, veteran losses, in-house experiments and weirdness, I could see a 6-10, unless last season’s playoff teams have gotten considerably worse all at once.

The roster is overrated. Bowles as HC is a big unknown.

  22. HC Grover Says:

He is betting Brady will be hurt and out for the season at Dallas.

  23. R.c Says:

Not that crazy..O Line super banged up, and let’s say Brady goes down for the year early on..that bet could happen

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Even if Brady got hurt, Joe believes the Bucs defense could be good enough to carry them to a wild card. Yeah, Joe typed that’.

And I’m glad you typed that Joe. I agree with you, PROVIDING that our defense can stay healthy. Our potential starting defensive lineup is solid as any in the NFL. I think we have much better Secondary DEPTH this year than last year, but I’m still not sold on Britt & Stuard as the backup ILBs. Our DLine is solid, but if Vea OR Hicks go down we’ll have real problems generating an interior pass rush IMO. Like Shaq & JTS as our Outside LBs, but we’re putting a lot of HOPE in there that BOTH JTS AND Nelson step up their game this year.

Personally think that these first 4 games especially will come down to DEFENSE. Dallas finished with a #7 defense last year; New Orleans ranked #4, Green Bay ranked #13 (but have focused on improving their defense it sounds like), and Kansas City ranked #8 defensively. Those are 4 excellent defenses that our Bucs’ offense will have to contend with. Their offenses ranked #1, #19, #10 and #4 respectively, meaning that our defense will have its’ hands full also. Those 4 teams had a combined record of 46-22. I’d be ecstatic if we end up 2-2 after those 4 games.

  25. Fansince76 Says:

    Dude just threw away $250!
    Dumb waist of money!

  26. Bird Says:

No way guys…we got an ndog sighting. Remember that clown. Claimed to be the biggest buc fan but literally disappeared after jameis went to saints and the bucs got going in brady first season.

In all honesty , i saw this bet days ago …pretty sure this person thought brady would not be back.

But yes the oline needs a tweak before brady gets tweaked

  27. Buc4evr Says:

Why is a dumb $250 wager a national headline. Think the Saints fan should pony up and make that bet $250,000. Lol.

  28. Mr. Editor Says:

It had to be Brett Farve! Yes, I spell his name that way!

  29. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    So, Jameis is that bitter?

There is not a Buc fan in the world that would make that bet.

  30. OrlandoBucsFan Says:

Defense Rules, you did not mention a boy named Suh in your post. That took great restraint. I agree our starting defensive line is strong, but depth is weak. Our backfield is improved in my opinion. We’re thin at linebacker as well. Nonetheless, I think this defense can win us some games or at least keep us competitive regardless of who is starting at quarterback. Let’s pray Brady stays healthy.

  31. Pewter Power Says:

This is what happens when you listen to media journalists talk about team concerns, well at least he only lost out on $250 I guess. There has to be a reason we didn’t go out and sign anyone else. They know something we don’t

  32. richardtyson Says:

A bad offense equals a tired defense. Not so sure we get to a wild card game without Brady.

  33. Melvin Junior Says:

He’s just hedging his bets is all… Guaranteed, he’s prob placed bets on 18-TEAMS (at varying amounts), at least!!!! Then, with THAT ‘Offensive-Line’ & with NO ONE really knowing WTH was up with Brady (etc.), coupled with there STILL being ‘a chance’ of him getting KILLED back there, ANNNNDD After Seeing ‘THAT’ in those TWO preseason games… We’ll, then WTH NOT take a flyer on it for a potential $100K PAYOUT on a $250-Bet, especially given another major significant injury or two, & the Bucs are in MAJOR “Tank-Mode” REAL SOON.

  34. Merry Plankster777 Says:

I’m betting on over .500 record!
Not sure how far we’ll go with a blitzin’ new HC but at least we have specter of the old HC roaming around for morale support 🙂 Can we get a lego figure of face mask Bruce with clip board?
Plus QB hath returned – Go Bucs!

  35. MadMax Says:

Well, if we did land the first pick (we wont, trust me) the best thing we could do is trade down, and Licht will do that….too many holes! Look at the 1 year contracts players are under this year.

  36. Infomeplease Says:

    Never bet against a winner!!!!!!!!

  37. Capt.Tim Says:

I think we have replaced too many great players- with players who have proven nothing.
Hicks for Suh. Hicks is great, but very injury prone
JTS for JPP- JTS couldnt beat out a one armed JPP last year. JTS is “hope”, he
Hasnt proven he can be a pass rusher. Pretty ineffective last year.
Goedeke for Marpet- Experienced pro bowler for struggling rookie. Crazy.
Hainsey for Jensen- experienced Pro Bowler for first year man. Never started an
    NFL game
Mason for Cappa- both talented, but Cappa was 6’6”. Could play tackle in a
    Pinch. 6’1” Mason cant.
Kyle Rudolph for Gronk- Rudolph isnt the player he once was. Gronk is the best
    TE in NFL history.

We have exchanged talent for Youth in many critical spots. I feel we have deminised the talent on this team. Scary in Brady’s last year here.

  38. Anonymous Says:

Your articles get worse and worse to read.

  39. T REX Says:

The team is 5-12 without Brady

  40. Red-sparrow Says:

    @Anonymous
Agreed. What the heck is the point of this garbage article? This site is supposed to post Bucs news after all.

  41. Pickgrin Says:

Bucs would still win 10 games if Brady were lost for the season in game 1.

This team is LOADED with talent at damn near every position on the field.

Yes Center and LG are question marks because of the injuries to Jensen and Stinnie. But the other three OL positions are manned by highly talented/experienced players and coaches seem to have a lot of faith in their interior OL depth….

Yes the Linebacker positions (inside and outside) are a bit short on proven depth – but the starters are all exceptionally talented.

There are no major weaknesses on this team – and less than a handful of minor ones involving depth.

It is impossible to have a perfect team with salary cap and 53 man roster limitations – but Jason Licht and Co have put together a legit Dream Team for what is likely Brady’s last season playing football. Never in NFL history has a better group of WRs been assembled on a single team….

This is the sunset year of the Buccaneers short lived but very deserved and fully enjoyable “Golden Era”. We’ve kicked like $80M down the road to be sitting in this spot and that bill WILL come due over the next 2-3 years.

So lets just enjoy what we’ve got – while we’ve got it. That’s what I’m going to do at least…….

  42. T REX Says:

    Dream team?

    BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Laughable. This might be Brady’s weakest Buc team since he’s been here.

Dream team. Take the homer glasses off

  43. Pickgrin Says:

Top 10 Defense for starters. This will be the best Bucs defensive team since Bowles got here in 2019.

Fournette (who led the league in RB receptions until the Saints took him out) is your workhorse back with solid talent behind him.

The best Quarterback who ever played the game – producing career high stats in his mid 40s…

Mike Evans – Chris Godwin – Julio Jones – Russell Gage is the best, most talented 1>4 WR group that has ever been fielded by a single NFL team.

Yes little arms – Dream Team.

You can’t really do better than what we have across the board with modern day salary cap limitations.

And I still think Gronk will come back and play at least part of 1 more year….

  44. T REX Says:

What a homer take…last year’s 1-4 was better – AB, Gronk, Godwin and Evans as the 4th option

    The o line is garbage.

Put down the pipe bud. Embarrassing

  45. Pickgrin Says:

Everything I say about the Buccaneers is a “homer take” – because I have been a diehard Bucs fan for nearly 40 years. Unlike you REX…. who obviously doesn’t give a spit about the fortunes of this Tampa Bay franchise.

The statement btw was regarding “WR group” – not Gronk + WRs…. I’ll assume reading comprehension isn’t really your thing.

    Evans/Godwin/Gage/Jones > Evans/Godwin/Brown…. Duh….

Your listing and thus view of last year’s primary weapons also tells the tale of your warped mindset – listing AB #1 and Evans “as the 4th option” – talk about embarrassing…

  46. T REX Says:

Pickgrin…Evans was clearly 4th last year and not happy about it.

    Check the stats home boy.

  47. Florida cracker Says:

I agree with T REX on that pickgrin.. AB is better than Gage and older Jones. It it kills me to type it. Cause with all that talent and drive he’s got ,he’s also the biggest idiot..

  48. Pickgrin Says:

    “Check the stats home boy”

    Evans 2020 – 70 Receptions – 1006 yds – 14.4 yds per – 13 TDs
    Evans 2021 -74 Receptions – 1035 yds – 14.0 yds per – 14 TDs

    Brown 3020 – 45 Receptions – 483 yds – 10.7 yds per – 4 TDs
    Brown 2021 – 42 Receptions – 545 yds – 13.0 Yds per – 4 TDs

If Evans was “clearly 4th” as you say – then why was he covered by the opponents #1 CB 90% of the time (usually with safety help)? Whenever AB was on the field with the Bucs – he was consistently working against single coverage from team’s 2nd or 3rd CB.
