Did The Saints Gift Wrap Joe Tryon To Bucs?

April 30th, 2021

Edge rusher shell game.

Very interesting insight from a guy who covers the NFL for a living.

So last night after Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht ended the first round by selecting edge rusher Joe Tryon, Licht mentioned he had Tryon rated higher than some edge rushers who were already drafted.

Joe Twittered that at the time, and here was a retweet from Kevin Patra of NFL.com:

So did Sean Payton and company outkick their coverage and set the table for Licht to grab Tyron? Consider the slimy Saints picked at No. 28 and selected edge rusher Payton Turner, a defensive end from Houston?

Perhaps Payton shat the bed with a reach and allowed his division rival and the defending Super Bowl champs the chance to grab a better player at the same position?

Remember, for all of Payton’s haughty bluster, he has no more rings as a head coach than Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

A HOF QB can make a lot of coaches look smarter then they are.

  2. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Sean Payton’s obsession with players named Payton or Payson will be his downfall.

Dude picked a 3rd rounder when there were legitimate studs on the board.

    J.O.K. ???

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Payton Turner, the defensive end from Houston was a reach, IMHO.
Joe Tryon will be reunited with Vita Vea, his old teammate at Washington. I love the pick!

  4. Hodad Says:

How many tackles were drafted ahead of Wirfs last year? Who had the last laugh, and oh the Lombardi trophy? Like Mac Jones said last night, doesn’t matter where you get drafted, matters what you do when you get there. Tryon is coming into a great situation. We get 5 sacks out of the kid rotating in, it’ll be a big plus.

  5. Rayjay1122 Says:

Joe Tire Iron sound pretty tough to me.

  6. ocala Says:

I’m a big fan of the Bucs pick.
I am surprised the offensive tackle from Oklahoma State is still on the board. Would not surprise me if the Jags take him first this evening.

  7. Mitch Says:

The bucs took a raw athletic beast to develop under JPP. I hope he comes ready to work is able to start within the next two-three years. I also hope Todd Bowles stays in Tampa long enough for him to develop.

  8. Cobraboy Says:

At least the Bucs drafted a guy who will always be “tryon'”…

  9. Darin Says:

Saints always trade up and or reach. They get one right here n there but not too often. The guy the mortgaged the future for couple years ago had a whopping 1.5 sacks last year. Way to stay put Bucs.

  10. Cobraboy Says:

I’m OK with Tryon, but I was kinda sorta hoping maybe the Bucs would take OT Teven Jenkins from OSU, the nastiest player in the draft…on attitude alone…

  11. fish Says:

this guy seems to have that jpp motor. just always moving around messing things up even if he doesnt get the tackle. I wonder how many qb pressures he has.

  12. Infomeplease Says:

This sure is a GREAT time to be a Buc’s fan!! GO BUCS!!

  13. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

While 6’6″ Payton Turner has the longest reach of any player in the draft, his 40 times were 4.8 – 4.9 range. A bit too slow for athletics OTs. I’d much rather have Joe Tryon who is slightly shorter 6’4″ but runs in the 4.5-4.6 range. Not quite as fast as Jayson Oweh, but still one of the fastest DL in the draft.

  14. K2 Says:

Tryon will take snaps as a rotational player. Edge rusher was much stronger need than O-line or RB. Bucs are still going for two! We still need depth at S, CB, LB, (WR or RB as a return guy)…and those guys can all help on Special teams (the weakest part of the Bucs)

  15. ArmchairGM Says:

Agree with you Bobby M. I’m still waiting to see if it was BB or TB that made NE. After last year, I’m definitely leaning towards one.

Oh, I remember. And Brees, Rodgers, Mahomes and Favre are also tied with Trent Dilfer.

  17. TOM Says:

Seems like a pretty good pick. guess we’ll just wait and see.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If we drafted that guy….Buc fans would be going nuts…..in a negative way….

  19. Perimeter Blocker Says:

Who ever knows how a pick will pan out??? I do like that they selected this position. It is logical. As far as Sean Payton… I want to see him fix Jameis and his INT problem. I have my doubts….

  20. Fred mcneil Says:

I never heard of the guy the Aints took.
Tryon is the guy most people had going to the Bucs back in Jan.
    I’ve always despised Sean Payton.
A pure unadulterated butthole first effin class.

  21. chris L Says:

screw payton that smug and dirty SOB!!!!!

  22. Netwalker Says:

I like that Tryon has been working out for the last year with a pro bowl defensive end further learning his craft. As good as he is, he may surprise in a good way when he gets on the field.

  23. DingleBerry Says:

Payton Turners tape is 100% better than Tryons.

  24. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Sean “Butthole Lips” Payton.

WOW buddy being that most of us know what that means…
I’ll spell it out just in case…. “A TURD or TURDS hanging from the arse end of usually a dog or cat but any animal applies that can’t wipe it’s arse properly”

Ok, with the definition of your name spelled out…. I have a simple question for you. Is there anything you actually like about the current SUPER BOWL WINNERS?
Alright one more. Is there anything you like about yourself?
    Have a nice day….

    GO BUCS!!!

  26. Coburn Says:

I also liked the little I saw out of Cam Gill. It will be interesting seeing Shaq Barrett, jpp, Joe Tryon, Anthony Nelson, can Gill. Lots of competition Nd depth.

  27. Adrnagy Says:

Saints drafted who they liked. Who fits there front 7. Everyone has a different taste. Also drafted to replace Hendrickson. Who cares. Whatever.

Tryon fits our front 7. This pick was more for future and need. Not right away impact player. = unless he doesn’t get overwhelmed and there’s a injury.

2 Nd round I’m looking at G/C , or DT Nixon.

  28. JL Says:

Let’s hope the go oline and corner heavy next few rounds. Need depth with all the free agents at oline and Carlton Davis probably commanding 12 to 15 mill next year.

  29. FrankPillow Says:

We are finally in a position where we can develop and mold highly talented prospects without first throwing them in the deep end and anointing them as saviors. Tryon fits the new mold of how we’re doing business. Relish it friends—these are historic, golden times for this franchise. Every player drafted this year is another layer of decadent icing on an already delicious cake.

  30. 813bucboi Says:

i was pissed when the saints grabbed payton turner….he’s good…kid reminds me of a longer cam jordan unfortunately….

but we cancelled that out by selecting a player just as talented just more athletic…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  31. Baby Grace Says:

    Dingle Berry,

You are trying to make a comparison between Turner and Tryon. Turner is a 4/3 DE hand in the dirt player. That is the main reason a 4/3 team like the Saints took him. Tryon is a 3/4 standup OLB who can cover. Comparing the two is ridiculous! It’s like comparing an ILB to SS or OT to a G/C. I knew you didn’t know anything about football and now i’m positive.

  32. Baby Grace Says:

    DingleBerry,

“Payton Turners tape is 100% better than Tryon’s.” 100% better? 100%? Go back to your basement and ponder if that is even possible.

  33. lowercaseg Says:

Payton Turner is a Cam Jordan clone

    _______

Just curious, how do you go heavy on 2 positions in the next 3 picks?

  36. DingleBerry Says:

Baby Grace… You can absolutely increase something by 100 percent. It’s called doubling, you fool. So to say Payton Turners tape is 100% better than Tryons is just another way of saying it’s twice as good. You fool.

And when I say that Paytons tape is better than Joe’s, I never said that Payton Turner and Joe Tryon played the same role. I’m just comparing their abilities as pass rushers. Which at the end of the day is what you pick an OLB and DE to do. Despite weighing 20+ pounds more than Tryon he still showed better burst off the line, flexibility/bend, speed around the edge, violent powerful hands and pass rush moves than Tryon. But sure Tryon is better at dropping into coverage smh.

So Turners abilities and tape as a pass rusher are 100% better than Tryon, and people are saying the Saints reached on that pick. So what does that tell you about our pick?

  37. DingleBerry Says:

    @Very Anonymous! or am I

I am very much aware of what a dingle berry is. I picked this moniker because I have a sense of humor. And I know that I formulate well crafted, thought out posts that are mostly spot on and that it’s funny to see a guy named DingleBerry make a ton of sense.

I absolutely love the roster that Licht has put together, I also love Bruce Arians and the coaching staff. I also predicted the day that we signed Tom Brady that we would become the 1st team in the history of the NFL to win a Super Bowl at home. I was more stoked than anyone at how Licht and Mike Greenberg were able to work the cap and bring back all 22 starters plus AB and key rotational guys like Nacho and Minter.

But in my mind, we just missed out on opportunity to get a whole lot better. That’s just the way I feel. I think Tryon is one of the most overhyped prospects in the whole draft and that there were probably 15-20 guys who would have been a better pick that we probably could have even traded down to get.

    Does that answer your question?

  38. Bucs Guy Says:

I thought Turner would be there in the top 8 of rd 2 and wanted the Bucs to trade back and get him. Once he was gone I was stoked for Azeez. I only didn’t want Oweh. So when the Ravens took him I was glad. Tryon over Azeez? Maybe, but I think most boards had Azeez higher.

I’m OK with Tryon and I trust JL/BA.

  39. Buczilla Says:

I don’t like Payton and I hope he and the Saints never win another game. I am so looking forward to us hopefully curb stomping them and Jameis this year. Bunch of low class bastards. 😛
