Another Money Game For Donovan Smith

January 17th, 2021

Who could forget when Saints loudmouth asshat defensive end Cameron Jordan ripped Donovan Smith publicly when the Bucs’ left tackle signed a fat new contract in March of 2019.

Joe’s got the Tweet below, in case anyone forgot.

Tonight, Smith continued his beastly play at left tackle and the Saints’ vaunted pass rush managed just three hits and a sack on Tom Brady.

Smith and left guard Ali Marpet teamed up to screw up on a pass rush game run by the Saints in the first quarter, but Smith settled in beautifully after that. Dude was a stone wall and Jordan can watch TV on his couch next week wondering why he couldn’t breathe on Brady.

Joe is impressed at how Smith has found more consistency to his game — under high pressure against strong opponents. He hasn’t had a clunker of a game in a while and his run includes to standout playoff performances.

For those who have been eager to dump Smith next offseason, Joe is confident Smith will stick around if Brady has any say in it. Or, if he does indeed go so the Bucs can save the $14+ million they owe him, the Bucs certainly will find a trade partner.

Now, however, Joe’s only wondering what Jordan will eat next week …

  2. Miller5252 Says:

He’s had 2 really great games. Hate to say it, but he’s shown that he should stay and our D ends might be down the road. When it matters he’s been there and the D ends have been on a break for 5 weeks.

  12. Sport Says:

Agreed on the Stinnie love. This coaching staff is crushing it.

I think i saw El Pukolisto shining the wheels on BA”s golf cart.

I also wonder how that trick play will have Npup fired up about how amazing JW is….

    In BA I Trust!

  13. Leighroy Says:

Yes, Donovan and Marpet did get eaten up on a stunt early. Locked it down after! LFG!

  16. DaBux Says:

    Two more.

  17. bojim Says:

Thanks for the bulletin board material Cam.

  18. REDZONE BA Says:

Thank you Joe – So many negative DS comments on this board….Dude is for real, and earned his Kudos…. Re-sign that big guy

  19. Rod Munch Says:

You can create that much needed cap space by resigning Smith to a long term deal and back loading it with guarantees.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

But wait, the dopes on the message board and talk radio said he’s soft and sucks and is holding back the offense. LOL!

  21. Kentucky Buc Says:

Way past time to give DS his respect. He’s had a really good year.

  22. Upthegut Says:

Credit where credit is due….D.Smith has done his job, gotten progressively better this year, stopped taking holding and false start penalties and has not taken plays off. Congrats for helping your teammates climb the mountain.
Keep playing like that and we will see some “76” jerseys in the stands.

  23. 123urout Says:

Game ball to everybody ! Defense, O-line, rookies who step up and continue the drive. Great game!

  24. Kentucky Buc Says:

Just watched a highlight of one of Rojos runs. Donovan pushed his man 8 yards downfield.

  25. ModHairKen Says:

Donovan Smith is a dominant LT. Period. End of story.

  26. My Momma Says:

I was so over DS early in the season. He was doing the same old thing. Heck, I was over him 3 years ago. How many times did his lazy play cost us games by not holding his blocks?? This is a victory for Brady and the coaches. Glad they were able to get though to him. Credit Donovan for listening. I just hope it isn’t because he’s in a contract year. Let’s see how he plays after he gets it.

  27. matthew veal Says:

id call this one the tom brady effect exhibit a, its the things like not taking games off, little errors, no more plays off that brady has the leadership to get this guy over the hump. sure some of it is time, DS had great talent and did work and show 80% of what was required before brady, either way this is now a long term player imo

  28. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Donovan has been “coached up” for the past two years. He demonstrates that coaching matters. Many people that post here underestimate its significance.

Being part of the real culture changes that has occurred since BA should not be overlooked either.

  29. Will Says:

I’ve been calling for this guy to get out of town and said last week that if he played well this week I’d back off him. Well DS76 thanks for a great game and getting that Saints monkey off your back. Keep it up great game!

  30. FortMyersDave Says:

Usually when the OL lets a QB get lit up, you will know by the fall out from the media and us fans but when they quietly protect the QB and that QB makes plays and wins games (unlike other Tampa QBs in the decade of doom aka the 2010s) then you rarely hear a peep about them. DS has been quietly doing a wonderful job as a tackle. Last week Larsen got lit up a bit but the line still repelled a good Wash. DL and front 7. Tonight, one bump in the road early and I think 2 penalties on offense for 15 yards against Stinnie and Wierfs. The Bucs ran efficiently, the GOAT was not knocked around! DS earned my respect as did the whole OL unit. Not perfect but well above average and a darn site better than anything the Bucs had under Rah, Greg S, Lovie and Dirk K….

  31. webster Says:

Donovan smith has proving he is a STARTING left tackle in this league. There is no need to get rid of him just because he is not top 5 like most fans on this board bash him for.

  32. pewterpirate99 Says:

I was one of those fans that was done with Smith and couldn’t wait to get him out of here. I must say I was DEAD WRONG, I’ve done a complete 180 on Donnie Smith. He has really stepped his game up and proven me and many other Buc fans wrong. I love what I’ve seen him do at the end of the season and the playoffs.

However I do think they need to redo his contract. Give him a long term contact heavy loaded on the end. Not because he’s not worthy/deserving of the $14 million, but because they need to be able to free up some cap space to resign some players and up grade our d-line and secondary in free agency. I don’t want to see him go. Let me say that again out loud…..I DON’T WANT TO SEE HIM GO! Great job Donnie, keep up the great work!

I really look forward to him and the rest of the o-line’s domination and mauling the Packers d-line come next week. Yes I totally believe our Bucs WILL beat the Packers and be the first time to ever host a Super Bowl in their home stadium. LETS F$&KING GO BUCS!!!!!!!!
