Jameis Has Passing Yards Crown In Sights

December 2nd, 2019

The bye weeks are finished and stats across the NFL finally are on an even plane.

And two gunslingers stand out from the crowd.

America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, has 3,659 yards passing, just 129 yards behind Dak Prescott for the league lead with four games to play.

The Bucs do not have one good pass defense remaining on their schedule. The best of the bunch is the Colts on Sunday, and they are middle of the pack. Dallas has a tough Bears defense on Sunday, and a vastly improved Redskins defense later in the year.

When was the last time a Buccaneers quarterback led the NFL in passing yards? Joe’s quite confident that never happened.

(Tonight’s starting quarterbacks, Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins, are so far behind Jameis they could not catch him even if they have historic games.)

Yesterday’s showing against the Jaguars also bumped up Jameis’ completion percentage this season to 60.2. That’s a stinky total, but it’s only one-tenth of a percentage point behind Andy Dalton and nine-tenths behind Tom Brady.

Regarding the passing title, in the 21st century, only Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, Matt Schaub, Daunte Culpepper, Rich Gannon and Kurt Warner have led the NFL in passing yards.

Joe would love to see Jameis bring home the honor, but Joe would prefer Jameis sit out the season finale to preserve his health and help score a better draft pick, and to finally see how Ryan Griffin handles himself in a real game.

Stop this draft talk bs….we are in the hunt for wildcard

“…but Joe would prefer Jameis sit out the season finale to preserve his health, help score a better draft pick and finally see how Ryan Griffin handles himself in a real game.”

And I would have preferred to see them get their heads out of (pick one) and compete for the division. I get being honest and all, but yeesh. Well, at least we all know you’re not alone feeling that way.

    When’s gonna be our time?!

  3. Brendle Says:

You lost me, Joe with the last sentence.

  4. MTM Says:

Stats are for losers was created for this exact type of crap. This clown has amassed passing yards and accumulated a ton of picks as well. A majority of his yards were created by playing catch after throwing said picks. The constant need to put him on a pedestal is laughable. Five years and he still sucks. Get over it FSU/Winston jock sniffers. The next GM needs to draft another QB. Let somebody else waste another few years cause it dam sure won’t be a 5 years like this horrible ownership wasted. Punt on Winston!!!

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

Now, combine the stats with a couple more victories, say 9-7, then they will have some relevance.

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Go Jw!!!!! This will be so cool.

Im going to common sense win this one and say you can’t suck if your passing for that many yards in a BUCCANEERS jersey

  7. Easy Says:

Seahawks runa different style offense than the Bucs run. Dont ever mention Winston in the same breath as Wilson. Two totally different types of QBs.

  8. D-Rome Says:

I remember when Blake Borltes was 7th in the NFL in yards and 2nd in TD passes thrown in 2015.

How did that work out for the Jaguars?

That’s a stinky total, but it’s only one-tenth of a percentage point behind Andy Dalton and nine-tenths behind Tom Brady.

Both those QBs do not have nearly as talented receiving options as the Bucs have and Dalton has already been benched once. Regardless of all of this. Jay-Miss is coming back unless he has another 4 turnover game.

  9. Conte Piscateli Says:

Somehow, seeing Dante Culpepper in the article is fitting. I’m trying to remember the historic list of accomplishments outside of being the lucky guy throwing balls to Randy Moss, Chris Carter, and Jake Reed

  10. D-Rome Says:

Stop this draft talk bs….we are in the hunt for wildcard

Yes, you are correct. The Bucs are not mathematically eliminated yet but they are currently at <1% chance at making the playoffs. If Minnesota wins tonight the Bucs are finished.

  11. AMI_Chris Says:

Dak Prescott (6-6) and Jameis Winston (5-7). Great.

  12. Sport Says:

I could care less about a QB with the most yards. I am far more impressed with situational football excellence and overall team effort. Which has greatly improved the last two weeks. When they have a stat for that, I will get excited about it, until then, I’ll let the Fantasy Nerds enjoy passing yards.

Winning games is more important than a draft pick….

    GO BUCS

  14. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

And America’s Grop…..errrr, Quarterback has a mind-boggling 467 passing attempts (by FAR the most in the league). Meanwhile he is 27th in QBR. Draft a QB.

  15. Sleepy903 Says:

I doubt the Vikings win tonight and they have a losing record against their division. However They will make the playoffs. They took out the entire NFC east if only we could have made the game winner against the Giants. Got one more stop against the Titans or Seahawks. Or if JW would have taken care of the ball in week 1.

Those are the 4 games that got away from us unfortunately.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If we have made the decision on Jameis, I am in agreement to give Griffin some snaps…..but not for a better draft pick…..we need to see if he can be our backup next year…..don’t need 3 QBs……

As for the passing yardage……it would be a nice individual honor for Winston but he’d trade it for a winning (or even not-losing) season.

  17. pryda...sec 147 Says:

stop talking about losing for a draft pick smh

  18. Sleepy903 Says:

AMI_Chris – surprisingly both the Cowboys have the same complaints we have about the play calling. I live in Dallas and I hate the Cowboys but their play calling one game is dynamic and creative then the next they are being conservative and are afraid to lose or make mistakes.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

And in answer to T……x (can’t put his name because Joe protects him)

You like to rib me about comp picks……when all I ever stated is that we may be in line for a couple of them (finally) because we have so many FAs on 1year contracts and some of them could get big offers from other teams….
Suh, JPP, Nassib, Shaq, Jameis and others……we may not be able to keep all of them…
    Now….is that so unreasonable?…..I don’t think so….only to a complete imbecile.

There are stats that represent the overall value of a QB to their team. It’s called DVOA and DYAR. According to Football Outsiders DVOA means a quarterback with more value per play. When it comes to those metrics Jameis ranks low on the list. To put it in perspective Patrick Mahomes has the highest DVOA number at 38.7%. Jameis’ number is -13% (that negative sign is not a mistake).

    Let’s go famous!

  23. ocala Says:

Jamies has done this without a consistent running game and often times getting pummeled by a poor offensive line.

The Bucs need to really concentrate on improving their OLINE and running game in the offseason.

  24. ben Says:

Only rose colored buc fans are impressed with Winston as the nfl rates him a bottom feeder but with great receivers around him.

  25. buccaneric Says:

Jesus, Joe, say it with me. 9-7. WINNING SEASON.

    Go Bucs!!!!

  27. whats the bucs plan 2020 Says:

You can say what you want Jaymiss Winsnot is not taking you to the promised land….

He loses 60% of his games and leads the NFL in interceptions….

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

Buc all night wake up from your dreams seattle and minnesota need to win one game an the bucs are eliminated.

  29. Bruce Blahak Says:

32nd in completion%, #1 in ints, #2 in sacks, 29th in QB rating, 1st in fumbles[15]…with a solid OL in front of him and 2 Pro Bowl receivers and 2 above average TEs….WHERE DO YOU BLIND WRITERS SEE THIS YARDS STAT AS SOMETHING TO BRAG??!!!

  30. Allbuccedup Says:

Jameis was 9-7 3 years ago don’t get too excited yet.

  31. Pewter power Says:

Nonsense sit out the last game for draft position? People who think like writers criticizing the people who actually do the job and actually talk like they know better. That’s unrealistic and you called lovie out for pulling his starters to get Winston.

  32. danr Says:

if jameis sits, it suddenly does not stay a ‘real game’.

we going to keep in evans and godwin while sitting jameis?

This ‘real game’ talk is a farce.

  33. Bruce Blahak Says:

I travelled thousands of miles for the “Lovie Sh*t Show” – the tank for WINSTUNNED game. Probably why I’m extra angry, with 5 years of garbage QB play. Tank for this? Ugh, was horrid game when it happened, and horrid 5 years after it….

  34. Go Bucs 72 Says:

    Ryan Griffin?😂😂😂😂

  35. Lamarcus Says:

Or how about you tank for a player and he blows his knee out in the preseason and he is IR for the year? Is this direction we are going? Then tank the next year

  36. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Joe would prefer Jameis sit out the season finale to preserve his health and help score a better draft pick…

Clearly the players are not the only ones who need to change the culture. Playing for draft picks is a loser mentality. If the fans want change, stop relying on draft position. Elite players are found all through the draft.

It doesn’t matter where you pick so long as you pick well.

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I would not mind seeing Griffin play, but it makes no sense to only put him in one game anyway. That’s not enough to evaluate him. Doesn’t matter anyway…Winston will be re-signed barring a complete meltdown in the next 4 games.

  38. TexBuc Says:

Winston is the starting QB now and next year some “fans” may want to start shopping for another team.

  39. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Clueless Joe has a loser mentality and was probably awful at sports

  40. Fire the fans Says:

Hey morgus you moron, go check the stats again. He does not lead in attempts

  41. Defense Rules Says:

Bonzai … I’m surprised to see that you think “Winston will be re-signed barring a complete meltdown in the next 4 games”. Jameis can get you offensive production in a ‘Bombs Away’ offense like BA runs; we’ve seen that act. BUT … he NEEDS a strong defense to clean up the messes when his inevitable turnovers happen. It ‘goes with the territory’ IMO when you have a QB like Jameis operating in a system like that. Without that strong defense, a decent OLine & a respectable running game, we’re just a break-even team … at best.

Problem is … paying ANY QB $30 mil (give or take) to operate a team that ALSO pays for a strong defense, a decent OLine & a respectable running game … PLUS TWO Top-5 receivers & a couple of VERY good TEs … breaks the bank.  Only 11 QBs are making MORE than Jameis is RIGHT NOW. Half of those teams have losing records, and others are truly elite QBs named Rodgers, Wilson, Brees, Brady who can pretty much carry a team on their backs. Several aren’t even playing right now (Manning, Newton, Roethlisberger). The numbers simply don’t work in this era of the Salary Cap.

  42. whats the bucs plan 2020 Says:

    Well said…… Defense Rules :

My thoughts exactly….. you are what your record says you are….. We have seen this movie for 5 years now .Jaymiss Winsot is not worth 25-30 million …. period.
he isnt taking us to the promised land……….

  43. Big_Buc$ Says:

You guys keep saying Winston is not worth 25-30 million but you want think Rivers, Dalton, Mannning, or Rookie QB will fix this team. If the trenches is not addressed it will be the same results no matter who the QB is. I for one don’t care who is at QB I just want to see the Bucs win weather is a dominate performance or a ugly win. So you guys think Cousins or Goff or Wentz is worth 25-30 million? since they all have solid defenses and a running game with receivers or they just make him look good?

  44. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

” BIG IF” the Bucs are 8-7 in the last week Jameis better start. There’s a small glimmer of hope. Iyer happened

  45. Slugglife Says:

So 1 game is required to keep Jameis healthy? Huh? If that’s the case advocate for shutting him down now. That’ll give him four games to stay healthy, right Joe? Or how about you don’t even know if he’ll be on your team next year.

This team and JW owe these fans some wins. Meaningless or not. High draft picks aren’t guarantees, but a winning record might put some more asses in seats.

I know the bar is low. Perhaps it’s time to set the bar at 9 wins. Stop hoping to be a loser.

  46. pelbuc Says:

MTM couldn’t have said it better. On top of that, moronic Licht and BA are married to the turnover machine and will cause this team to lose good, young defensive players in order to re-sign the proven failure, JW. Fromm should be available when the Bucs pick and there may be worthwhile QB value in the 2nd round and Oline help but Licht will never find it. Worst GM ever!!! You can groom a rookie QB and pay all the FAs and still not turnover the football at the alarming rate of JW, yet the stat geeks somehow think he’s a god. Look at the record!!!

  47. Buczilla Says:

Lol, I’m usually optimistic, but we are 5-7 and Jameis leads the league in interceptions and dumba$$ plays by a significant margin. Who cares about yards when all of the above is true? We are just spinning our wheels with this cat even though I believe the tag is in the bag at minimum. Licht and Arians will need to save face at the expense of our team’s future and my sanity. Jameis is neither a franchise quarterback nor flirting with the top 10 so why waste our time with him? 5 years thrown to the wind is enough. So gosh damn frustrating. Leader in yards? Woohoo! 😂

  48. jjbucfan Says:

Same idiot haters…day after day, article after article. Articles about D White get co-opted by the same morons day in and day out. They root for him to lose, which means you root for us to lose. I bet 9/10 of you people are Gators, with your immature nicknames that you think are cutesie. Congrats on your win btw, well deserved as you guys hired a real coach and we hired a pipe dream. I mean you act like JW3 is Chris Leake

  49. diggler Says:

Useless af stat dood geeez… who cares about Winston anymore?! He’s an ok QB. He’s not the world beater franchise QB you’re so horny for. Let it goooooooo Jooooooooe/s.

  50. buc15 Says:

    jjbucfan for the win

  51. BucMan13 Says:

How does he compare on literally every other stat?

JW also is ranked #32 out of 33 QBs in completion % with 60.2%

JW is ranked #29 for Qb Rating with 82.7 (only beating Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mason Rudolph, Andy Dalton and Baker Mayfield)

JW also ranks #1 in int for the season.

JW is also ranked #2 overall for being sacked.

JW TD to INT ratio is 1.1….. that is 39th out of the 48 QB’s who have thrown a TD this season. Prescott for comparison is 2.09, Teddy Bridgewater is 4.5, Tannerhill is 3, Garden Minshew is 2.8… etc

  52. unbelievable Says:

@DR I think they would be trying to get Jameis for about 18 – 23/mil per year, (which is obviously still a lot) but would probably allow enough wiggle room to put more money into the defense.

Plus there’s all sorts of ways to structure contracts to minimize what counts against the cap.

    But who knows?

In regards to our season overall, it’s been a lesson in #MissedOpportunities :

    SF
    NYG
    SEA
    TEN

SF wasn’t as close but without those turnovers we prob would have one. The other games literally came down to a single play…

    Frustrating for sure.

  53. donuts Says:

Is there a Super Bowl accolade for passing yards during the regular season? What a bunch on nonsense…… its about the WINS. Winston was a tale of 2 halves yesterday….first half looked like Montana; second half like Ryan Leaf.

Thank goodness the DEF stepped up and led us to the win.

  54. BrianBucs Says:

Winston could win the Tripple Crowm – most passing yards, most interceptions, most total turnovers.
    CONGRATULATIONS!!!

  55. Jurevicius Circle Says:

Just for fun, here are the NFL passing yard leaders each year this century:
    Manning
    Warner
    Gannon
    Manning
    Culpepper
    Brady
    Brees
    Brady
    Brees
    Schaub
    Rivers
    Brees
    Brees
    Manning
    Brees/Roethlisberger (tie)
    Brees
    Brees
    Brady
    Roethlisberger

That’s some elite company. Exclusive? No. But let’s not pretend that being the NFL Passing Yardage Leader is meaningless. Sure, that title plus $5 will get you a chicken sandwich at Popeye’s. Given the choice between that title and a playoff berth, I know what EVERY NFL QB is taking, obviously. But it’s still a team game, and “wins” still aren’t a QB stat.

There’s not a QB on that list who “sucks”, and there’s only a couple who aren’t in HOF discussions.

    You don’t like Jameis? Fine.
You don’t want him quarterbacking the Bucs? Understandable.
You’re fed up with the turnovers and sacks and bad decisions? Hey, get in line pal.

But one doesn’t just luck into being the league leader in passing yards, and one doesn’t accomplish it if he sucks. So if you want to be angry about it, fine. But don’t diminish the accomplishment simply because you want more wins than this team has been able to provide.

  56. July Joe Says:

Dak has been racking up GARBAGE YARDS all season … he’s lit up terrible teams, struggled against good teams and as the last 2 games shown, racked up like 150+ yards in each game of garbage yards.

Jameis meanwhile is throwing 200+ yards in the first half and then having his OC go turtle …

BTW, the Cowboys have a WAY BETTER roster, have had a WAY EASIER SCHEDULE, and almost everyone in the media thinks Dak should “set the market” with his next contract, yet the Bucs are a chip-shot FG by Matt Gay against the Giants (after Jameis came up clutch) from having the EXACT SAME RECORD as the Cowboys, while also scoring more than the Cowboys despite having a way worse run game … yet the media wants to run Jameis out of the NFL …… HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

JAMEIS WINSTON WILL GET $$$$ PAID $$$$

  57. BucHead588 Says:

I want Jameis Back i dont know what Most of y’all Remember Tampa having for a QB but is isn’t always Greener on the Other Side ok Jameis throw to many Picks so did Favre idc with the way the Defense has been Playing we can win like this out QB has our WRs 2 MF an 3rd in Rec an our QB is 2nd in passing yards an I think Top5 in TDs the Ints were not the reason Bucs been losing Games it was VH3 an I’m sold on that Now soon as Bucs get ride of him our CBs start Balling out 3 weeks in a Row Bucs have had one of three Starting CBs graded in the 90d an Higher Dean Davis SMB I think I get what BA said when the Secondary is Fixed
