The Play That Changed The Game

December 2nd, 2019

Game-changer.

The Bucs were leading 7-0 and the lead was about to get bigger.

It was late in the first quarter. The Jags were on their second possession. Second play in fact, when Nick Foles went back to pass.

NFL sacks leader Shaq Barrett went around the end and did a Simeon Rice move. As Barrett was about to slam Foles, Barrett tomahawk-chopped the ball loose, as Rice did so well. Devin White scooped up the ball and housed it.

Add a two-point conversion and the Bucs led 15-0 before folks could even get out of the beer line and into their seats.

After the game, Barrett talked about the sack that changed the game.

“I just wanted to get to the edge,” Barrett said. “So I kept going around the edge and I saw the quarterback right there holding the ball. That gave me a shot and I tried to knock the ball out. I didn’t know if I got it for sure or not, but I did, and Devin [White] scooped it. It just started out the game right.”

You damn right that started the game out right. Moments later the Bucs had a 22-0 lead and totally controlled the first half of play.

How dominant was the Bucs defense in the first half? Here are the results of each of the Jags’ six possessions:

Fumble.
Interception.
Fumble.
Three-and-out.
Three-and-out.
Three-and-out.

That, friends, is defense.

Somewhere, Derrick Brooks is smiling.

Man I wish we had cut Jameis and got Nick Foles.

  2. Sport Says:

Great to see two weeks of competitive football from our beloved Bucs.

Now it’s about keeping some of these key components. – Barret and JPP

And continued growth from our extremely young secondary.

    In BA I Trust!

  4. AMI_Chris Says:

I agree, the defense played great. It was nice to see the DBs & LBs actually break up some passes.

  5. ATLBuc Says:

What a huge difference it has made to get rid of an entitled loafer and promote someone hungry!!

only way i see this guy staying if he cans his current slimy agent and really wants to stay in Tampa. otherwise his agent will go to highest bidder with best off field earning potential… which is the slimy agents job after-all. i don’t see the current agent throwing a pity party for licht and giving discounts…. remember think realistically… hope and feelings are irrelevant.

I’m starting to think we may actually franchise Shaq & give Jameis a longer term contract…..but, I’d be fine with the other way around.
Barring a meltdown…..Jameis will be here next year.

  10. whats the bucs plan 2020 Says:

You can say what you Jaymiss Winsnot is not taking you to the promised land….

He loses 60% of his games and leads the NFL in interceptions….

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

If you’re going to ‘break the bank’ on a player, this is the guy. He’s proven to be the pass-rusher we’ve needed. And he’s CONSISTENT!

  12. Go Bucs 72 Says:

    It’s about GD time!!

    @tmax:
The only sane and logical thing you’ve ever said. Careful, it’s the Christmas season. Your heart might grow three sizes (like the Grinch) and you’ll start to love the Bucs and Joe Bucs Fan!

  14. firethecannons Says:

Dude is the sack leader again, Joe please post a link to the pro bowl vote–if we don’t send this dude to probowl he might not even resign with us-we have a responsibility too.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

I wasn’t expecting Bucs defense and young secondary to atommatically learn Bowels defense. These wins are all good reps for players going forward. It’s always on the coach (or Jameis). Keep teaching ’em up Todd.

  16. Bucamania Says:

Shaq comes up big AGAIN! Dude is a gamer. Must sign.

  17. Buczilla Says:

It would be just like us to sign Jameis (the tag is in the bag at minimum) and let this guy walk. I hope it doesn’t happen, but I don’t trust Licht to make sound decisions.

  18. Slugglife Says:

Between Shaq, DW, and JPP, hell the whole defense- the game is fun to watch again. Maybe Shaq shows loyalty to the Bucs for giving him this years contract and stays. Maybe not. Be damn shame for him to leave this team.

Dexter Jackson left after he won Super Bowl MVP and poof- never really heard from him again.

Love to see these guys play one more season together.

  19. #1bucfan Says:

Ahahahaha at that T M A X I comment to dam funny. Love watching defenses play like that. Almost thought it was the old Tampa defense out there then I saw someone running down the field wide open haha love the progress MAKE ME A BELIEVER AGAIN IN THIS TEAM BY WINNING ANOTHER THEN ANOTHER AN THEN ANOTHER WIN OUT BOYS an make a run at the playoffs if the stars Aline it could just happen lol

  20. JimbobBucsFan Says:

I guess poor Dexter was a “system player” after all.

The “Tampa Two” was a helluva defensive scheme or “system” at the time.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    blah blah blah blah

they were a highly ranked defense on a bad team coached by a one dimensional fool… you can’t rewrite history because it feels better….

2 playoff wins in 6 years is not legendary with a generational player like sapp…

the only thing you low standard fans have to cling to is meaningless pro bowls and subjective politically correct popularity lists….
