Bucs-Jags, Open Thread

August 30th, 2018

Fire away. Keep it clean. Obsess together over this meaningless game in the comments section.

Stick with Joe after the game for plenty from the locker room.

Ronald getting the Doug Martin treatment from the O-line…

  2. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Jags radio announcer just called Ronald Jones an undrafted FA! Either they didn’t study up for the game or he’s seen him play! Lol

  3. BuccaneEric75 Says:

NOW they act like they know him!

  4. Rod Munch Says:

The same people saying Jones stinks are the same dopes that would watch Martin have to break 5 tackles to get back to the LOS and then complain about his average.

  5. Obi Says:

anyone streaming the game online? links?

  6. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Announcer said before kickoff that Alex Cappa might get snaps at center…

  7. Rod Munch Says:

The NFL really needs to go to 18 regular season games and 2 preseason – I mean a lot of teams didn’t even play their starters in week 3, and now in week 4 you’re not even seeing 2nd teamers, they’re going straight to 3rd teamers. I wouldn’t be shocked if they change it as soon as next season.

  8. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Rod Munch, nice insult! Did you learn that from your man-crush Trump? I ended my comment with “lol”. I guess that means I was serious!

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Rod Munch, I’m of the opinion that at least 3 games are needed for evaluation s of bubble guys. Really, 4 would not be an issue if the nfl did not charge for them.

I am in favor of expanding to 18-20 games and an extra bye week.

  10. Rod Munch Says:

The box score warriors will say Jones getting hit 9 yards behind the LOS is totally his fault. It’s why people who judge people based off box scores are morons.

  11. BuccoDav Says:

Did we dress any offensive lineman for this game?

  12. Wesley Says:

Cannot wait for Licht to be gone after this season. The guy has been in over his head since day one.

  13. AlteredEgo Says:

    Preach on Rod Munch !

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Bonzai – I’m not really in favor of more than 16, but the NFL won’t shorten the preseason without getting those 2 extra home games back. I do like 2 bye weeks, I’m not sure why the NFL didn’t keep that around – having another week of RedZone is OK with me.

For preseason a lot of coaches and owners continue to say 2 games are enough – and keep in mind if there was only 2 games in the preseason teams wouldn’t play starters much, so it would be these same fringe guys playing more, I think.

I do think it happens very very soon – but I really hope it’s not more than 18 games – I like how each game really means something, and even at 18 games it’s really starting to devalue each Sunday.

We shall see what happens – but man, week 4 of the preseason you used to get starters in for a series or two and then see a bunch of 2nd teamers, now it’s 3rd teamers starting each game.

  15. SchwiftyBuc Says:

I’m extremely interested to see what Rojo is capable with ANY amount of blocking.

  16. Season Is Over Says:

Jones is breaking the law of averages.

  17. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    capable *of*

  18. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Season lol are you actually watching the game, the dude is being hit by unblocked guys 5-9 yards behind the LOS. What is he supposed to do?

  19. Season Is Over Says:

Yes, I agree on a few of the runs he was stuffed. With over 20 carries you would like to see a bit more production. Lol. Sometimes Rbs have to make it happen. Wasn’t that the gripe on Martin? I don’t know if it is time to worry yet. The fact remains he is like 24 carries with maybe 24 yards.

  20. SchwiftyBuc Says:

No the gripe on Martin was him running straight into the back of a lineman when there was a hole to hit. Jones is not really getting any kind of daylight to work with…

  21. BucEmUp Says:

he over thinks and is small. Barber is a big back with muscle. I think he will be fine but should a just traded the lions a 7th for Zach Zenner and had two bad azz power backs

  22. Rod Munch Says:

The gripe with Martin was dopes that didn’t watch the game commenting on the box score. Want proof…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRcYEqxGA9w

Martin ends this game with a 2.4 yard average, yet he broke probably 12 tackles in this game and is juking 3 guys just to gain 0 yards compared to losing 5 yards. There’s nothing anyone not named Barry Sanders could have done in that game with that terrible blocking and predictable play calling.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I think Rojo deserves to be the number 4 back so far. Because Barber has done well and Rodgers is a suitable backup with a good oline make Roju and wilson work to get higher.

  24. SchwiftyBuc Says:

I’ll reserve my judgement for Jones until I actual see a whole for him to hit that he fails to. Until then it’s all overblown nonsense.

  25. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Receiver depth chart: Evans, Godwin, Jackson, Humphries, Watson, Wilson.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Wish they could keep 7 wrs…

  27. AmericasEnabler Says:

Griffin man, if they trade him I’ll be pissed.

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Great idea to make the probowl meaning full…winni g conference gets an extra roster spot.

  29. Rod Munch Says:

Keep Watson and Wilson, I don’t think it’s a difficult choice at all. The only reason Bobo shouldn’t be there is if he’s still be a POS behind the scenes.

  30. Zwak Says:

Start Griffin the kid has skills!

  31. BucEmUp Says:

Griffin may be better than fitz. Leave it to Koetwr to spend three years developing a qb and not.do anything with him

  32. Rojas Says:

Has Noah Spence played ? Not able to watch the game. But I heard he was suiting up to play

  33. AmericasEnabler Says:

    Nice feet Honcho LOL

  34. BucEmUp Says:

Griffin came from.the saints..I would consider starting him week 1 really hard

  35. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Watson will 100% make this roster.

  36. AmericasEnabler Says:

Spence is playing, non factor with some of the worst rush moves ever.

  37. MadMax Says:

that quick slant to Watson looked great! def a keeper, possibly our #4.

  38. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Yeah if Noah had any kind of inside counter move when his speed rush doesn’t work he’d be so damn good.

  39. Rod Munch Says:

Griffin is playing against 3rd teamers and already threw what should have been an INT. He’s fine but isn’t having an amazing game or something. Nice TD pass on a simple slant. A good QB should be dominating assuming he’s getting decent play from the people around him, and so far his guys are running the right routes, he’s getting OK pass blocking, etc. Again he’s not playing poorly or anything, but being OK versus 3rd stringers literally means nothing. If we went by 3rd stringer production in the preseason then a lot of guys who have never made it would be HOFers.

  40. Rod Munch Says:

No doubt that Watson has a spot, he has it based on his draft position alone, he’d really have to McNicholas it up to not make the team, and clearly he’s had a very good preseason.

Spence has been in there, just showed some OK speed – but on a no block play.

  41. D the Bucs fan Says:

Cant watch game is rojo getting a toss, sweeps swing passes to use his speed on the perimeter? Just wondering

  42. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Bucs TE Depth Chart: Brate, Howard, Auclair, Cross.

  43. Bigz Says:

    Spence is Eric Curry 2.0

  44. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    @D the Bucs fan

The ran him on exactly 1 weak side toss and he gained about 4 yards. But all in all what I came away with from Jones tonight was that he is receiving no favors from this O-line.

  45. Rod Munch Says:

D – I don’t think a toss play has worked in Tampa since before Gruden got here. But mostly Ronald is getting handed the ball and literally getting hit nearly at the same moment. He’s out of the game already.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

I hate this stupid helmet rule – how in the world are you supposed to stop mid-air and move when the offensive players lowers their head at the last min. I don’t care if we get the benefit of the call or not, it’s a dumb dumb rule.

  47. BucEmUp Says:

wow Jones is already out of the game? This must be ugly. Who is the kid behind Jones I’ve heard he actually looked really good in camp.

  48. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Rojo’s not out of the game for poor performance. He’s out because he was designated to play the 1st quarter only. Wilson is the 4th string RB and he’s shown some good ability as a pass catcher and kick returner. But he’s shown just about as much on carries as Jones has.

  49. Rod Munch Says:

BucEmUp – Not ugly at all, they’re just taking guys out early. If he was still playing then I think it would be an issue, but they’re getting anyone that has any chance of playing in the regular season out of the game.

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I wish Wilson was a little taller and buffer. That is the only complaint I have with him.

Still, he has the potential to be a Franchise RB in a few years if not sooner.

  51. Bigz Says:

    Spence has no get off

  52. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t know, Shaun Wilson looks, from what I’ve seen, to just be your standard fringe RB who will be bottom of the depth chart. I haven’t seen a ton of him so I could be wrong, but even compared to undrafted Barber, who had good size and good power, I just don’t see much in Wilson at this point. Again, not rooting against the guy, just my opinion based on limited amount of seeing him, more than happy to be wrong.

  53. AmericasEnabler Says:

How was that not a catch???

  54. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

That was a catch. 100%. Bucs got the benefit of a bad call. About time the refs make a mistake in our favor.

  55. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs always get the calls when it doesn’t matter. In the regular season it will be Evans making that catch and it being wiped off the board.

  56. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Too true…

  57. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    2nd almost pick from Griffen

  58. AmericasEnabler Says:

Welp Klueless @Kobe Faker is gonna call the plays in the regular season. All that hype from the preseason… forget it ever happened. hhahahaha only the faking bucs.

  59. SchwiftyBuc Says:

And all I can say definitively about Wilson is that he did very well returning kicks last week. And he’s also shown to have good hands and above average quickness.

  60. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah, I don’t see this great game that Griffen is having. He’s missed a few throws, almost threw 2 INTs, threw into triple coverage near the goal line… Could be his receivers not running the right route so I won’t completely blame him.

He did throw a great hail mary there, the ball was perfectly thrown, nice and high and in the endzone.

  61. Lamarcus Says:

Ryan Griffin has a throwing form of high school Qb. See why he never took a regular snap

  62. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

So…after all of the upcoming cuts, someone the team releases is almost certain to go elsewhere and do well. No way around it. The competition is so strong this year at certain positions, there;s just no way to keep everyone.

  63. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Rod Munch, those WRs on that last play were all pretty mad at themselves. We’ll never know what the true story is on some of these plays, but I think you are right.

  64. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Winning at the half again. I hope our defense will be able to hold leads in the regular season, because I have a feeling we’re going to lead at the half a lot.

  65. Greg Says:

Can somebody please give Ronald Jones a Purple Heart? Every year we see a soft offensive line and defensive line once the starters leave. Our back up running back’s have no shot of doing anything.

  66. Tc Says:

Is it me, or does Shaun Wilson look better than Ronald jones?

  67. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

    @ Buccaneer Bonzai

I know it is only preseason but our defense is ranked 3rd from the bottom. Only three teams has allowed more than 350 yards per preseason games: Dolphins, Titans and the Bucs.

  68. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

They will not win if the DBs are going to be playing 15 yards off the receiver….similar to last week.

  69. Rod Munch Says:

We’re now at the future UPS workers stage of the game…

  70. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I have no idea why they do not use Alan Cross the way the Jags just used Tim Crook. Cook is 6’0″, 242 lbs. Cross is 6’1″, 235 lbs.

Outside of Peyton Barber (225) lbs, all our other RBs are 205 or under.

I want to see what a bigger guy can do! We have not had a big guy since Alstott left!!!

  71. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    AlabamaBucsFan Says
“I know it is only preseason but our defense is ranked 3rd from the bottom. ”

No, we really are not. We were ranked that way LAST YEAR. This is a new year. New slate. Heck, most of the defense has been overturned.

  72. Rod Munch Says:

    Allen is not very good.

When he was signed I went and watched his college tape and he was terrible – and it was his highlights. I don’t get why the Bucs sign guys like this, what is the point? They’re clearly never going to play in the NFL, so why not spend the spot on a passer instead of a guy who is first and foremost a scrambler without the physical tools to be in the NFL? They did the same thing last year with the goat farmer, there was zero chance he’d ever play in the NFL, so why waste a camp spot on the guy? Why not sign someone like Quinton Flowers, a guy who at least has a big arm in addition to scrambling? Makes no sense to me.

  73. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Too bad Johnson is 29. Love the effort.

  74. Rod Munch Says:

Bonzai – Last year the Bucs were absolutely last in defense, and the preseason stats are correct, the Bucs were 30th going into the game.

Again I take nothing away from preseason except for if an individual is having a dominant performance, like Winston for example, and even then you take it with a grain of salt.

I haven’t been impressed by the defense, but we really didn’t see the complete starting defense out there. Not only missing all those DT’s, Grimes barely played, VH3 was injured, etc, etc etc.

  75. Rod Munch Says:

Ogunbowale shows some great quickness out there, but again, it’s against guys that will never play in the NFL – so is he that quick against guys that play on Sunday or just against the guy on fries at Wendy’s?

Anyways he seems like a good practice squad guy – he certainly looks quick.

  76. Rod Munch Says:

Wow, Spence is still in there? That’s not a good sign for him… are they really going to cut him? Yikes.

  77. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

@ Buccaneer Bozai “No, we really are not. We were ranked that way LAST YEAR. This is a new year. New slate. Heck, most of the defense has been overturned”

Quoted from Bleacherreport, “Per NFL.com, the Miami Dolphins have allowed a league-worst 410 yards per game this preseason. To put that number in context, only two other teams (the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans) have given up over 350 yards per game.”

  78. Kobe Faker Says:

You guys ready for Klueless the playcaller to bog down the offense?

I cant to see little humps bubble screen while Godwin is playing on special teams

Ive read OJ was blocking 70% when he was on the field last year. Im surprised he doesnt go to sleep waiting for his 2 targets per game

    Saints 28
    Bucs. 16

Im predicting we see ryan griffen next week

  79. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    This back-up secondary is TRASH.

  80. Rod Munch Says:

Yeah Bucs are #30 in team defense at 356.7 ypg, #23 in points given up at 23.7 and #21 in yards per play given up. They’re #28 in passing yards given up per game, and #20 per game in rushing yards given up per game.

So overall it’s not been good. But again, it’s preseason, you’re not game planning and starters haven’t play a lot.

  81. mark2001 Says:

Alabama… let’s see what happens the first three games. Honestly, I have an uneasy feeling about it…hope I’m wrong. And I know we have had a number of injuries. But really, does that give us much confidence that we also won’t have a boatload of injuries during the season? Let’s hope we have had our share for this year and it gets less from here. But again, I’m uneasy about it.

  82. mark2001 Says:

If Hundley was a sixth round talent for the Packers in their trade with Seattle, would that make Spence a seventh round value?

  83. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Just makes me sick to know that we could’ve fired Mike Smith and hired Vic Fangio this offseason and didn’t.

Fangio had a top 10 defense in 2017 and was available to be signed and we didn’t even attempt to. Let that sink in.

  84. SB Says:

Cichy looks good against the current competition.

  85. SchwiftyBuc Says:

    @SB

that’s because Cichy actually has talent unlike Joe Dirt.

  86. Rod Munch Says:

SB – Agreed, Cichy has mostly had a solid night so far, although early on he hit the wrong hold on a running play an the RB ran right around him for a big play, but not sure if that’s on him or if that was by design. Otherwise he’s been good. He also had that sack on the play I thought was dead, so good on him for playing through until the whistle when everyone else stopped.

  87. Rod Munch Says:

SchwiftyBuc – Had not Cichy been hurt for most of the last 2 years most people said he’d have been a 3rd or 4th rounder, so if he’s healthy and got his legs back then he should be good. Joe Dirt was always an UDFA who has heart, but very limited speed. Still not sure he’s good enough, but I like Joe Dirt and I’m pulling for the guy, if he can get good enough in the defense perhaps he can overcome being a half-step too slow.

  88. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Rod, he won’t. He’s more than a half step too slow, and he’s not even big or strong or laterally quick to make up for it. He’s nothing special and people only like him because of Hard knocks.

  89. Rod Munch Says:

SchwiftyBuc – Well yeah, I think he’s more than a half step too slow, but I’m saying maybe he can make up a half step, which would still leave him a half step too slow… I will say I liked him a lot more before he cut his hair, I mean how do you have a great great nickname like Joe Dirt and reject it?!? I mean the sponsorship money is there if you embrace it. That was his trust fund background coming into play, because someone without a rich mommy and daddy is hustling to get some t-shirts some printed.

  90. Season Is Over Says:

Rojo is 28 rushes for 22 yards this preseason?

  91. Rod Munch Says:

Season – Yeah getting hit 6 yards behind the LOS as you’re being handed the ball will do that to your box score. But you judge guys based off your eyes, not the box score.

  92. mark2001 Says:

If Jones is constantly getting hit behind the line of scrimmage, where is that O line we so desperately need to keep the defense honest, improve the red zone offense, and protect our QB(s)? In other words, help Koetter keep his job….

  93. Season Is Over Says:

I have never seen those kind of numbers in football.

  94. Rod Munch Says:

mark2001 – Jones hasn’t played much with the starting o-line in there, not to mention the starting o-line mostly being injured. But it’s a real thing, go watch the plays, he’s constantly getting hit behind the LOS and has had zero chance to show off anything really. It’s not like he’s stopping behind the line or trying to get cute, I think he did on one play in TN, but otherwise he’s taking maybe one step and getting hit. It’s basically impossible so far to make any judgement about him because he’s not had many chances to show anything.

  95. mark2001 Says:

Season.. Jones didn’t all of a sudden forget how to play running back. Makes you think about this line, doesn’t it? And if we look this way in the regular season while Martin tears it up in Oakland, there are no other places to point the finger at than the O line, coaching and Licht.

  96. mark2001 Says:

Agree Munch… but rough way to start the season when your number 2 RB hasn’t been able to run behind the O line and many guys have been injured. Do we expect this all to change in one week?

  97. SB Says:

Well Guys……..At least we have interesting things to talk about!!

  98. Season Is Over Says:

I agree, Mark. I just hope this isn’t an early symptom showing through.

  99. Rod Munch Says:

mark2001 – I don’t know about week one since I’m not sold on teams respecting Fitz’s arm and I think they load up to play the run – but when Winston is back, yes, I think him being back will open up running lanes. Might be a rough start with the injures and with Winston out.

Also Shaun Wilson has looked good as the game has gone on. Again, against future valet parkers, but he’s making what he can out of the chances he’s been getting.

  100. Rod Munch Says:

Did I mention that Allen sucks.

Ugh. Meanwhile Quinton Flowers had to move to RB to get even a camp invite for an NFL team. Makes no sense to me.

Also Bobo I think has made the team, I don’t see why Reedy or Freddie would get yet another chance.

  101. SB Says:

I have to drive 4 hours minimum to get to my son’s first JH football game tomorrow. Cool times but harsh trip! 🙂
    Gonna grab a hotel.
    Football HERE in many ways!

  102. Rod Munch Says:

SB – Best of luck to your kid, teach them to be a bully and they’ll dominate as most kids are complete wimps now. Show him tapes of Sapp talking trash, teach him insults, teach him how to poke guys in the eyes while in the pile – man, I’d be a great dad.

  103. SB Says:

    ‘Football is here”

  104. SB Says:

    Cool Rod.

  105. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Newsflash…they would not have sat Martino if he wasn’t a lock to make the roster, and they are not going to cut Watson.

So, sorry to break it to people, but Bobo is toast.

  106. Rod Munch Says:

Bonzai – We shall see, not sure why you’d want to keep Martino over Bobo, unless, like I said before, Bobo is still being a j/a behind the scenes. Maybe Bobo sneaks back onto the PS, he can still go there and perhaps the Hard Knocks footage scares off other teams from wanting to bring him in. Maritno and Reedy can’t be PS guys anymore, so that could be the deciding factor perhaps.
