No Room At The Inn

Former Bucs great Derrick Brooks said he would look forward to being a big brother for Jameis Winston, but just not at his home.

Former Bucs great Derrick Brooks said he would look forward to being a big brother for Jameis Winston outside his home.

Much has been speculated in recent weeks about former Bucs great Derrick Brooks agreeing to be a “mentor” to potential first round draft pick Jameis Winston.

What exactly that means, Joe really has no idea.

In fact, the notion was floated that Brooks, who personally knows both Winston and Winston’s parents, would even invite Winston to live with him, not unlike Mario Lemieux putting up Sidney Crosby when the latter was drafted by the former to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Hold up! Brooks said Thursday morning on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Brooks, appearing on the “Opening Drive” with co-hosts Booger McFarland and Ross Tucker, said that option is closed to Winston, or any other Bucs rookie that may be so inclined.

“I think people have taken it a little too far that I would mentor him and he would move into my own house,” Brooks said. “There’s really no room for that. For the last 14 years, I have mentored young guys who have wanted the help and reached out to me. I continue to do it, even with [Bucs] players who are on the roster today. I am here in town and they have extended that arm and I reach out and grab it.

“It will be the same if they draft [Winston] or any of their draft picks. I will extend my hand.”

Besides, Brooks said, even if he wanted Winston to live with him, again, there is no room at the inn.

“Ross, listen, we have four kids. There is no room,” Brooks said. “We are full. And I don’t think a young man coming out of college wants to say at somebody’s house. He’s going to be fine, trust me.”

McFarland added, “Ross, Brooks has this thing called a wife. She’s not looking for any houseguests.”

This would be a story if Brooks had taken players into his home in the past….but he hasn’t……no big deal here….means nothing….mentoring takes on many forms….

  2. biff barker Says:

Seems like DB is on the defensive for defending Winston. America’s darling ?

Maybe not so much outside of Tallahassee.

    Telling.

I bet McCown gets picked up by a team that goes to the super bowl.

  4. Tom Edrington Says:

Look, whoever takes Winston, it will be time for Winston to step up and prove he’s on the real road to responsibility……

Brooks is no man’s baby-sitter, that is not who he is or what he does…

Brooks is a Hall of Fame football player and Hall of Fame man and he devotes his time to his business ventures and his children…

    Simple as that….

If Winston needs a babysitter, then his mother needs to move in with him, wherever he lands….

    Very, very simple as that

  5. flmike Says:

If your NUMBER 1 Draft Pick needs a baby-sitter, then he SHOULDN’T be your NUMBER 1 Pick!!!! Thats not a red flag it’s a god damn flare….

  6. Sapp, STFU Says:

Interestingly, the Bolts do something like the residency program.

The Bucs should ask season ticket holders if they have pool houses or mother-in-law suites where rookie players can reside under basic supervision. The candidates could be upstanding local citizens that might even offer some mentoring and guidance on being a better steward of their fame and pending fortunes.

The GM can interview the candidates and provide oversight guidelines. This could be very effective.

  7. BB Says:

Won’t work without him living there needs to be babysat 24-7

  8. Nybucsfan Says:

No with kids that’s in there right mind moves an accused rapist in there home come on. If anyone really believe he would have needs to get in touch with reality

    No one with kids

  10. R.O. Says:

“On the defensive”? Did you not read his whole comment? “He’s going to be fine, trust me”. I think he’s growing frustrated with people and people’s perceptions of JW.

  11. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Pretty normal comment that haters choose to spin.

  12. bucs4lyfe Says:

Perfect example of how media exaggerates a story. I was listening to him on the radio at the time he said it weeks ago in fact his exacts words were he’d mentor Winston but he wasn’t moving him in. You tell me how media ignored the but that came directly after him saying he’d mentor Winston. He even went as far too say that Winston and his people needed to have some kind of plan for own growth and development as a person and player but the only thing written was Brooks will move in Winston. Why would a millionaire want to move into Brooks home and be noted to death anyway…… The media is the one that made it so you can’t trust what you read but this sight is a classic example of if it’s on the internet it must be true

  13. bucrightoff Says:

I think Jameis intends to live at the Mons.

  14. Robert 9 Says:

brooks basically said jameis gets no more special treatment than any other player that picks up the phone and calls him.

thats not real special, just being a decent human being.

but it makes this whole “brooks will mentor hime” complete and utter BS.

  15. Robert 9 Says:

jameis is gonna fall like a rock come draft day. if he’s there in the second round take him, but other than that let him be someone elses headcase.

  16. Skyline Crew Says:

After seeing that Mayock compared Winston to Cutler I will pass on this one.

Mayock on Winston: “I don’t like all of the interceptions he throws; he reminds me a little bit of a Jay Cutler coming out of Vanderbilt.”

No thanks to a Cutler clone. Don’t need that crap here.

  17. knuckledragger Says:

Sounds like Brooks doesn’t want Winston hitting on his wife.

  18. Supersam Says:

Oh oh…. Brooks is backtracking I think he’s coming to the realization that whoever mentors “Babysits” Winston is gonna have a full time job on there hands, why would you want to spend a first round pick on someone who needs a babysitter!? Know wonder this team has been so putrid for so long, were probably the only fan base in the league who be be excited about drafting an average college quarterback who makes a few “tight window throws” but is a total loser off the feild!! Ask the bills how there Florida State quarterback turned out, the guy couldn’t even beat out Lovies boy Kyle Orton!! And yes he even ran the same Jimbo Fisher “pro style” offense Winston ran.

  19. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

The only comparison between Cutler and Winston is arm strength. Additionally, if Mayock compares him to Cutler, and STILL has him ranked above Mariota, what does that say about Marcus? Apparently WORSE than Cutler.

  20. BFFL Says:

Sounds like Brooks is backtracking as I’m sure he now realizes how ridiculous it sounds to propose that a #1 pick franchise QB prospect needs strong mentoring.

  21. Skyline Crew Says:

He was comparing interceptions. Marcus doesn’t throw interceptions because he is smart with his throwing. If Winston becomes an interception machine like Cutler then we are in for a long ride to nowhere.

  22. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

You know who else threw a lot of interceptions? Brett Favre

And, like I said, he said that and STILL ranked him over Mariota.

  23. tmaxcon Says:

Brooks is not backtracking nor is he withdrawing his support for Winston he just is not the freaking Holiday Inn. Nothing more, nothing less. That’s it! If anything it’s a positive response from Brooks by stating

“And I don’t think a young man coming out of college wants to say at somebody’s house. He’s going to be fine, trust me.”

That’s far more of an endorsement that Winston will be fine than it is a backtrack on his previous statements. However, I understand the Holier than thou hypocrite agenda must be followed regardless of facts by the 8 or 9 blind haters here.

87 Winston owes you a signed jersey regardless of team he goes to. You are doing a very nice job bringing balance and reason to the hypocrite crowd. Good Work Sir!

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

When DB moves to Nashville to mentor Winston….he can purchase a larger home!!!

  25. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Other than responding to folks who call Jameis a rapist or thug the hater thing is sooooo worn out.

Let me ask all of you a question. You’re out in public and a family with a few kids shows up at a restaurant at the table next to you. The kids are well behaved. They either spend time playing with their handhelds or engage in polite conversation. You admire the class and decorum of that family.

A different family shows up with petulant whiny kids who sass their parents. What do you think of those kids? Does that make you a hater?

Supporting/Being an Alumni Homer/Mentoring and Being a adopted Dad are two different things.
Jameis will not be adopted by Brooks and why anybody thinks that it is Brooks’ job to be the morale watchdog over all new BUCS is beyond me.
He is a Grown Ass Man and sure there is a transition phase,
but if you have to watch over him like some kid,
that sounds like it would factor in PRETTY LARGE in your Number One pick

  28. Skyline Crew Says:

At this point Mock Drafts don’t mean anything. At this time last year mock drafts had Bortles and Bridgewater at the top. After the Combine and FA that all changed. I’ll wait and see what happens. I’d still rather have Mariota than Winston though.

  29. tmaxcon Says:

    Stpetebucsfan

That’s way to deep of a question for this crowd sir.

Society is mirroring the political climate. No compromise, No Common Ground you either are with the cause or against the cause. It does not matter whether it’s a race issue, gay issue, govt issue – we have gotten to the point where people can no longer share differing opinions without being labeled. It’s a very polarizing world and most people are followers who take on the tone of the environment they live / work in. It’s sad. Most Americans are middle of the road in my opinion not fanatical right / left / gay / straight etc… But yet all you hear is the extremes shouting out above the rest.

Also the Winston haters need to stop the partying or staying out all night comparisons to JohnnyREHAB. Calling Winston stupid SuperSam just shows your ignorance. by the way you, maybe you should post your grade point average for the world to see or better yet your acceptance letter to Stanford. I doubt you would fair very well under the same microscope. None of us would here except Bonzi and Barry of course. but what the hell it fits your agenda so go for it.

  30. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Joe has pretty much exhausted all things Jameis. Rather than debate Fameis specifically and get called a “hater”. I think I can see what this boils down to.

Some people are a “win at all costs” type of fan. That’s OK. Others are not and that should be just as OK.

Would you rather cheer for Vincent Jackson or Mike Williams or MEshawn Johnson? Legarrette Blount or Warrick Dunn? Greg Hardy or GMac. Ronde Barber or Aquib Talib?

For many the answer would be for whomever gives us the best chance of winning. While I respect that I’m simply not from that school of thought. And to those who say you can’t win without some “questionable” characters I say BS. The great Buc defense was loaded with character starting of course with one of the greatest Bucs ever, the subject of this thread DB55. Shelton Quarles was a class act…Ronde..John Lynch…the list goes on. The only jackasss on that defense was Warren Sapp.

The offense was loaded with classy guys as well. Dunn, Alstott, Brad Johnson, again the only jerk was MEshawn Johnson.

You don’t HAVE to employ low character guys to win football games.

  31. JTHV Says:

    @Thaxton

“Holier than thou hypocritic agenda…” – well f’n said.

Funny thing to me is most people I’ve met or listened to that have a negative opinion Jameis Winston haven’t spent one dime at Ray in recent years. So therefor, they don’t have an opinion because they don’t support this team.

They sit at home in front of their $800 HDTV’s and complain when there’s blackouts and that it’s too hot to be in the stadium.

  32. tmaxcon Says:

Stpetebucsfan – you also don’t need to crucify or deal out the death penalty to every 20 year who makes some mistakes in his life. Hell, I’d be executed years ago if I was judged by the same standards Winston is when I was in my late teen / early twenties there was not a happy hour or strip joint I did not frequent. Now I am a fine upstanding citizen. LOL… Anyhow, I hear what you are saying and agree for the most part but Winston is not the next coming of Satan and he does give the bucs the best chance to win.

  33. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Tmax

Excellent take. And the Fameis debate proves your point. One side wants to say he’s a thug and rapist and the other side want to canonize him as St. Jameis. Are you out there 87? 🙂

But I agree with you that most folks are probably down the middle. I prefer Mariota because I think he has a ton of upside and his style is more in line with what the future of the NFL seems to be heading. But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that Jameis spoiled rotten brat antics irritate me and probably do influence my decision.

Having said that though I agree it’s completely unfair to compare him to Johnny Football who is simply lazy as well as self absorbed…same could be said for Jamarcus Russell. How good could Russell have been if he had the motivation of somebody like Mariota or Manning or Brady? We’ll never know because as Cyndi Lauper once sang…”Money Changes Everything”. It obviously ruined poor Jamarcus. But why do I call him poor. He’s sitting somewhere sipping some concoction and laughing his arse off for having gotten over. If that’s what floats his boat more power to him. Jameis has made plenty of mistakes but I can honestly say I do not find him to be lazy or unmotivated and comparing him to Jamarcus Russell or Johnny Flash in the Pan is truly unfair.

  34. Pickgrin Says:

The whole premise is ridiculous. Why would there even be talk of Brooks moving Winston into his house? Where the hell do silly ideas like that even come from??

  35. JTHV Says:

    *sorry for typos

  36. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Where the hell do silly ideas like that even come from??

Pickgrin they come from SPORT BLOGS. LMAO.

You are correct the ideas are silly. But sometimes it’s fun to get silly. At least we know we’re not here saving the world but just having some fun and yes absolutely getting silly.

I keep floating the idea of signing Tim Tebow as a super hybrid H back. And imagine if we take Jameis and we had the specter of an FSU Heisman winner tossing the ball to a Heisman winning Gator?

Better still how about seeing a Heisman FSU guy toss it to the Heisman Gator only to have the Gator pass it back to the Nole. What a trick play!

OK now that last thought was silly.

  37. JTHV Says:

But then want to have an opinion of which direction the very same franchise they do not support monetarily should go.

Why is there 15-20% less than capacity at Buc games?

Because of these very same people who claim to be fans, beat their drum of opinions but dress up as empty red and pewter seats on game day.

You opinion of which direction this franchise should go means nothing if you don’t truly support the team away from your 55″ HDTV, cheap beer and clean bathroom at home.

    Go Bucs!

  38. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

@You don’t HAVE to employ low character guys to win football games.

That’s true. It’s just there’s differing opinions of what “low character” really is. And what the media has portrayed. And, we could also go through every single Super Bowl participant/Champ and find a few guys that at least SOMEONE on here would find issue with. Michael Pittman, for instance.

Was MeShawn a diva? Sure. How many WR’s aren’t? And, was he really low character? Not in my opinion.

That’s the problem, we have people dumping differing levels of behavior into one category.

Ultimately, that’s fine. Because, I trust the front office to make that decision, not people posting on a message board.

  39. Tiny tim Says:

How anyone could see DB’s comments as backtracking means you are either a clueless person that lacks comprehension skills or a flat out Jameis hater. News flash clueless haters, Mariotta wouldn’t be allowed to move into DB’s house either. “After seeing that Mayock compared Winston to Cutler I will pass on this one.

Mayock on Winston: “I don’t like all of the interceptions he throws; he reminds me a little bit of a Jay Cutler coming out of Vanderbilt.”

As the draft comes closer, you will hear something else too, by the guys who take the time to really pay attention. Winston throws into tight windows because he takes so long to throw and projects his throws, allowing the defense to move into position. This is also why his picks are so high.

By the same token, people say Mariota’s WRs are always wide open, accounting for his completions. As the draft gets closer and people take the time to analyze properly, they’ll see those WRs are open because he throws them open…the way good QBs do.

  53. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Love and Warrick Dunn Says
“The only comparison between Cutler and Winston is arm strength. Additionally, if Mayock compares him to Cutler, and STILL has him ranked above Mariota, what does that say about Marcus?”

    Typical Winstonite.

He was comparing playing styles. As already said elsewhere by a bunch of sources, Mariota is compared to Russel Wilson, Kapernick and Newton.

My personal evaluation is that Winston is not like Cutler. I think he’s more like a Byron Leftwhich, but less mobile.

  54. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Brooks was not backtracking. He was clarifying after being misquoted.

While some are indeed crucifying the young man, just disagreeing with not drafting him is NOT crucifying him. I’ve noticed a goodly number of Winston supporters cry “hate” is anyone says the Bucs should not draft Winston.

    That’s not very nice either.

Or perhaps its because in your feeble attempt to slander Winston – you fake quoted a black man using a combination of Ebonics and Buckwheat’s catch phrase.

If you want to actually have a grown up debate about it – then post accordingly. But your penchant for slanderous 1 liners that address nothing ever regarding the QB position or Winston’s capabilities as such – leads me to believe you are very ill equipped for even a discussion much less an argument or debate.
