“You’re Going To Get Calls Immediately”

Trade up/down calls are a sure thing to be happening right now, explains a former GM.

Phones have been ringing at One Buc Palace for days, ever since Tavarres King left his mark on Bucs history and Tampa Bay locked up the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

That’s the word from former NFL general manager, Charley Casserly, the former Redskins and Texans GM — the guy who wisely drafted sack machine Mario Williams No. 1 overall in the face of massive Houston pressure to select Vince Young in 2006,

This morning on WDAE-AM 620, Casserly said with a premier quarterback prospect likely to be available for the Bucs, it’s a safe bet they’ve already been belted with trade-down offers from other teams.

“If there is a premier quarterback there, then you’re going to get calls immediately,” Casserly said. “If there’s not a premier quarterback, you might as well go to lunch.”

Also, Casserly said one should expect that representatives of Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston will reach out to the Bucs and other teams to gauge interest in their clients — before they declare for the draft.

“I would be surprised if they’re not. Ok. Now teams are not supposed to talk to them. But I’ll tell you in history, some sure as hell did talk.”” Casserly said.

Joe is confident the Bucs are getting all kinds of calls feeling out their trade interest. There are some desperate teams out there, including the Bills and Jets, a team Casserly is now advising in its GM and head coach search.

    Just take mariota

  2. Tom Edrington Says:

    Desperate teams out there?

For goodness sake Joe(s), we’re looking at perhaps the MOST desperate right here in Tampa!

    2-14?

I’d say that creates despair as well.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

The question is, Have the Patriots called an offered a 6th round pick and an old, broken down player who is quote ” a leader ” to trade for the Bucs #1 selection???

  4. tmaxcon Says:

    Bribe Trestman and Draft Winston!

  5. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Who do the interested teams call…..Lovie or Lieht

  6. tmaxcon Says:

JoeJoes Fungi Nails – I would imagine all the calls go through Lovie’s man man McCown first then to Licht and final and true to form Lovie does the opposite of his staff recommendations and makes final decision which in turn sets the bucs franchise back yet again.

  7. David Says:

Casserly didn’t say the Bucs ARE getting calls. He’s just saying that if there is a good QB prospect that we would be getting calls.

It may be crickets at One Buc Place for all we know.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There are many teams looking for a QB…..

    Bucs, Titans

Redskins, Bills, Jets, Texans, Bears, Cardinals, Rams

Glennon will be traded to one of them…..probably Cardinals or Rams

  9. Robert 9 Says:

    @ realist

you know they would make a trade to new england for a ham sammich for the #1 pick assuming it to be a game changer.

can we package L & L in the deal?

  10. BoJim Says:

The Bucs will trade down. Glennon will start and McCown will be the backup. PLEASE don’t start McCown.

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I would be willing to trade with Oakland for Carr and their first. Still a high pick and Carr is that good.

    Won’t happen though.

  12. Robert 9 Says:

as much as i would like them to trade the pick, i do agree we need a franchise qb.

just roll with qb and try not to get him killed

You know, you don’t get the number one pick by having a great record, right? We are not different than any other team that gets a first pick. Heck, we have more promise than half of them.

  14. Lovethepewter Says:

I’d be okay with trading the pick away if Winston stays in school and we landed 2 extra first round picks.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

btw, I doubt they have gotten any calls before the two QBs have declared for the draft. Honestly.

What if they both refuse to enter the nfl?

  16. port richey george Says:

    no 0-line rebuild take Mariota.
if 0-line is rebuilt take Winston.
    smartest move=trade down.

  17. theodore Says:

Trade down, start McCown all next year, get #1 pick again.

  18. lightningbuc Says:

The Bills are desperate? Why? They have a 1st round draft QB from the FSU QB factory and Jimbo’s “system”.

  19. biff barker Says:

It’s a shame the Glazers didn’t retain Casserly, Poulian or another football guru.

Instead we have a pseudo GM reporting to a pompous stalwart.

Of the many years spent in the business world, I’ve observed the mark of the brightest minds is to seek out expert counsel without any reservations.

Pride is one of the seven deadlies.

    2-14. Simple as that.

  20. Dean Says:

    My preference would be:

    1. Hire Trestman…immediately!

    2. Let him decide what kind of offense you want and which QB best fits that scheme.

    3. Bring in Hasselbeck as back-up/interim QB to develop the youngster.

    4. Go all out to investigate and interview all associates, teachers and authorities to best understand what you can and can not expect from the rookie you draft.

    5. Following Trestman’s recommendation (he’s gonna have to develop the choice, not Lovie), pick the chosen one first pick……unless you get a game changing offer of picks for two years that will fill multiple holes the Bucs have.

  22. Eric Says:

Take the phone off the hook and draft a QB. I don’t care which one.

SMH at your comment. It’s purposely contrarian. The great Bonsai knows more than a veteran GM? Umm, OK!

  24. Barry Says:

Neither one of these QBs hold a franchise grade. Joe agree with that, right?

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Dean

    Sounds reasonable….

It would be tempting to trade down twice in round 1 and pick up multiple pick in this year’s draft. We have lots of holes to fill and filling them with inexpensive draft picks is a good option….but
I think the fanbase wants a QB and that’s what they should get. I believe it will be Mariota and whatever it takes, even if it takes a year or 2, lets get him fully prepared to lead the Bucs for many years to come…..
Patience will probably still be necessary. It is very rare that any rookie QB performs at playoff level immediately.

  26. biff barker Says:

    Dean, good post.

Hire Trestman RFN and let him call all the shots without reservation. He’s got to pick his own team.

  27. biff barker Says:

TBF, I get where you are going but trading down only means last place in the NFC South again.

Watching the playoffs? Manning, Brady, Luck, Flacco, Rodgers, Wilson, Rothlisberger and Romo are all still dancing.

    What’s McCown doing Sunday?

  28. Bear the Bucs Says:

Trade down and fix both lines. It all starts there. You could have Peyton, Eli, and old man Manning back there and they would get creamed. Fix the line on both sides of the ball !

  29. mac Says:

We should ask Mark Dominik what we should do…

    He has all the answers!!!

  30. Sapp, STFU Says:

Take Mariota. Try to do good. In 1-2 years, if we aren’t a play-off team, hire Chip Kelly as coach. He’ll be available.

So get Mariota to get Chip Kelly.

  31. Yugenaugur Says:

Sorry, there is wrong information in this article. Houston wasn’t pressuring to take Vince Young, they were hooting and hollering for the team to draft Reggie Bush. Get your facts straight please.

  32. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Unless we get an offer that blows us out of the water then take Mariotta and call it a great first day of the draft. Since there is only 2 good QB’s in this draft the value instantly goes up. There is no one else to pick until the 3rd round. So I’m sure there has already been calls made and come draft day there will be multiple more. We have a lot of holes. We have to have a great QB for the fan base and the future of our team. This is a problem I like having. Options give you the chance to improve a whole lot faster IF you make the right decisions. Which is not always what we end up doing.

  33. MTM Says:

The problem I have as Buc fan is seeing a 2-14 record. The team needs a franchise quarterback to save face with the fans and make the 2015 season watchable. Yet the Head Coach/GM that led the team to 2-14 is making the pick.

    @ Joe

Are you prepping the next piece about Dominicks take on who he would take at number 1?

  34. StPeteBucsFan Says:

We pick Mariota and start him immediately. Yes he’ll have some growing pains but he is a very, very bright kid and totally committed to football.

Russell Wilson is the obvious prototype. 3rd round draft pick who beats out the hand picked starting QB before the season even starts. That’s because Pete Carroll is bright and not a typical football coach. He’ll play the best player regardless of prior decisions.

This hardly ever happens on most teams. So the top draft choices play frequently while better players sit because coaches and GM’s simply cannot admit a huge mistake. Can you say Anthony Collins or Josh McCown?

  35. MIssingSchiano Says:

Trade down, fix O-line, Start Gelnnon, pick up FA-QB as back up. Don’t let MCclown on the field.

  36. MIssingSchiano Says:

Look at all these prospects we could fix our O-line in no time by trading down –
