More Hints Surface For Bucs’ Offense

June 4th, 2014
Josh McCown was pretty solid in throwing out of a shotgun formation last season in Chicago.

Josh McCown was solid throwing out of a shotgun formation last season in Chicago.

OK, so yesterday, Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford was asked directly what comments about “up-tempo” offense from players meant. Tedford said, in so many words, think two-minute offense.

OK, fair point. Now often, a two-minute offense involves a quarterback throwing out of a shotgun formation. It’s not an absolute, but it often is.

Now that takes Joe to the spreadsheeters over at Pro Football Focus. The nerds have been working overtime of late in breaking down quarterbacks.

They just released a chart documenting QB stats when throwing from the shotgun. In their study, Josh McCown was pretty sharp.

The Bucs quarterback, who played for the Bears last year, had impressive numbers. Consider McCown in the shotgun threw 185 times, completing 125 passes for 1,543 yards for an average of 12.3 yards a completion.

That’s a completion percentage of 67 percent, damn good, especially when the defense is expecting you to throw.

So now Joe can see why the Bucs were so aggressive in signing McCown, aside from his relationship with Bucs coach Lovie Smith. If Tedford really is going to implement more of a two-minute offense throughout the game, and McCown already showed he’s pretty damn good passing out of the shotgun, then it all adds up.

Football like life…sometimes you get shotgun and sometimes you gotta ride in the trunk!

  2. robert8 Says:

the only wrinkle being when they go out on the field for the 1st game and The CANNON takes the field catching the opposing defense completely off guard. The giraffe impersonator will then slice and dice the competition into a sniveling heap that makes rah rahs D look like Seattle on roids. from there we will hear no future mention of McCown and only stories of the greatness of Mike “The Cannon” Glennon.

  3. PRBucFan Says:

lol Yes because suddenly Glennon is Brees?

  4. Couch Fan Says:

No Glennon is Glennon! And he will take us to the promised land PR. Even you will be a believer.

    -LONG LIVE THE MGM!!!

  5. Putup Says:

So Chicago hardly ever played in shotgun, 185 Att Is really low isn’t it?

  6. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Glennon ran the hurry up with Great Success without even practicing it!

  7. flmike Says:

Thats a very small sample size, considering he only played in 8 games total, he literally had the least number of snaps (other than Jake Locker who was injured, Matt Cassell, Thad Lewis, etc) from the shotgun by a large margin of any of the other QBs listed. A better representation would have been, QBs who played more than x-amt of snaps total. As a starter, he’s a helluva a backup…

  8. robert8 Says:

Robert’s source says MG has already been chosen for the role in the next superman movie

  9. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

Once again, for all of you who think Joe has something against our Backup QB The Cannon no rocks are being thrown his way on this article…

But I do think The Cannon played great against SF on our no huddle offense. As you remember Schiano quickly pull the plug on the no huddle offense since the no huddle offense was not practice for this game.

Boy are we going to miss that game adjustment…

  10. sam Says:

That would also buy our offensive line a little more extra time in pass blocking. Maybe that’s why they don’t seem too be too worried about our gaurd spots. Quick passes out of the shotgun, puts a lot less pressure on the guys up front. Get the ball out quick then hurry up too the line and do it again. Make the defense tired. I like it!!

  11. knucknbuc Says:

Ppl are going to be surprised about what mccown does this year sorry mgm. If mccown plays as good as I think he will “the cannon” won’t see the field until his rookie contract is up.

Mccown has the real cannon. He’s going to tear it up this year. He fits tedfords offense to a t.

  12. robert8 Says:

I’m all jacked for the season to start! The more they talk about it the more it sounds like combination of Denver, Pats and Saints.

and we have more weapons now! I am definitely getting the new madden when it comes out!

  13. Buc the Haters Says:

I think McCown will possibly be a Probowler this season and Glennon won’t start here for at least 2-3 years. I like both QB’s, but McCown is a little bit better in every way.

  14. jo_mama Says:

Tampa Bay lost a great coach with Schanio. He had the vision to get rid of the dead weight and then sign Mike Glennon.

3rd draft pick Mike Glennon in 12 Games had better stats in his first season than the Following #1 Draft picks in their first season (or first full season):

    Matthew Stafford
    Sam Bradford
    Alex Smith (First 8 seasons)
    Carson Palmer
    David Carr
    Tim Couch
    Drew Bledsoe
    Jeff George
    Troy Aikman
    Vinny Testaverde
    John Elway

And you can throw Tom Brady in the Mix too.

Anyone who does not think Glennon is our QB of the future does not know football.

  15. joe$ucfan Says:

Correct me if im wrong but Lovie has never really developed a QB. Developing MG could be his plan to take the team to the next phase. They might not have seen any QB in the draft that they felt better about than MG. Manning runs the shotgun up tempo offense and he sure can’t get out of his own way. Maybe their offense does not require a very mobile QB.

  16. Barry Says:

Kids will grow up idolizing Mike Cannon.

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Didn’t Schiano run the hurry up one game with great success? And then genius that he is he stopped using it.

Mike Glennon or Josh McCown apparently just need to be slightly above average (and have an elite D carry him) and apparently they’ll be worth 6 years and $126 million.

  21. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

you know what’s funny? McCown is the perfect fit for this offense & “The Cannon” will have to wait 2 years to compete for the starting job with the QB we will draft next year. IMHO

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

W/ Colin Kaepernick’s record breaking contract..(RG)-Alex Boone’s extension just went out of the window. Good trade target for a team looking for a LG & RG.

  23. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Source: Matt Barrows on Twitter

49ers RG Alex Boone is unhappy with his current contract and is skipping OTAs.
Entering season four of a five-year, $7.45 million deal, Boone is owed $2 million base salary this season.

He’s started all 32 games the past two seasons and was PFF’s No. 2 right guard in 2012 before falling off as a pass blocker in 2013. The 6-foot-8, 300-pound mountain works best when he can get out in space as a run blocker. With LG Mike Iupati, Colin Kaepernick, and Michael Crabtree entering contract years, the 49ers are going to find it quite difficult to pay all their stars.

Boone is unlikely to see an extension right now.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

I think it would not only be funny but great if Glennon actually does pan out and an actual real true MGM shows up at RJS on Sundays. You know like a group of crazies. All sitting in the same section. Like the hockey movie Slap Stick with Paul Newman and the Hanson brothers. The Hanson’s had followers. Crazed fans. All wearing #8 jerseys.

Just what do we name the section then if that happens? The MGM section? That’s too lame. Something creative. Of course there would have to be MGM tailgate parties too, that would be a must.

    Maybe even an MGM.com someday?

  27. SteveK Says:

Glennon is going to improve and crow will be dished out to some pen and mic folks.

Glennon earned his opportunity to be the QB of the future.

    Cannon and the Bucs.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

They could sell stuffed animal giraffes with #8 jerseys on. Maybe even have Vote For Mikey T-Shirts. Damn I’m brainstorming. Anyone else?

  29. Buc1987 Says:

If Glennon truly is future QB of the Bucs and that happens. Then I think we all need to chip in and buy Joe a Glennon jersey.

  30. rayjay1122 Says:

Speaking for myself, I am a fan of McCown and Glennon since I am a Bucs fan and guess what. ..they are both Bucs. How can so many “Bucs” fans pull for either QB to fail. I just don’t get it.

rayjay…who’s pulling for either one of them to fail?

  32. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Joe’s

What are the benefits of holding practices in the heat of the afternoon- As opposed to mid-morning?

Sure we have a new, state-of-the-art training facility. W/ air-conditioned locker rooms and dining facilities, a weight room, meeting rooms and dorms for players and staff. But do you think Lovie’s trying to bring back the ol’ “Woodshed” mentality back to the organization-By conditioning players in extreme conditions?

Let’s pick up some first downs and score some in the second half, then build on that.

Were not used to legit offensive football. Can’t take a big dose right away.

I’m not sure how to act without witnessing runs at multiple NFL records in futility, and the yearly lengthy losing streak, totally out of it 3 weeks into the season, abominable game plans, etc.

  36. SAMCRO Says:

Has anyone noticed that Mike has been beefing up. He’s even getting that Star Trek Cardashian neck muscle thing going on. Or if anyone ever seen the movie “The Keep”? ..when Scott Glenn turned into an angel with these huge angular neck muscles. That was classic!! …giraffe teddy bears ..smh …lol

  37. the ether Says:

Looking at the full chart, Josh McCannon’s numbers are crazy.

I take it that the MGM didn’t bother to go to the website, and pull up the numbers on the bottom 16 QBS.

One stat that stood out was that they both racked up 1550 yards in the shotgun…. but Josh McCannon did this with 125 less dropbacks than Glennon.

And unless the MGM cant figure out how to use the old interwebs to see Glennon’s stats:

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Shotgun-2.png

But I get it, he was a rookie. And I really don’t have anything against Glennon, (its just his ridiculously annoying circle-jerking groupies that have taken over JBF).

So dont worry MGMers, Glennon should be ready to step in after McCannon hangs up the cleats… in 2017.

  38. Buc1987 Says:

ether …your a funny character aren’t you? Taken over JBF?lol So you want us to compare what Glennon did in his rookie season to what McCown a what 12 yr vet did in his one season, last season with the Bears?

    Again..your a funny character.

What if McCown was a one hit wonder last year? Happens allllll the time ya know. Up until right now at this minute. He IS a one hit wonder. Everything he did before last season was basically NOTHING!

Of course I’m pulling for him to be the same McCown from last season. I’m not expecting it though. The way it looks to me. You expect it to happen. Good luck with all that.

Btw…Joe basically poured fuel on the MGM’s fire on a daily basis for 3 months and you expect them to not be all over this site? Essentially emboldening them when he was not traded or let go.

  39. the ether Says:

“Btw…Joe basically poured fuel on the MGM’s fire on a daily basis for 3 months and you expect them to not be all over this site? Essentially emboldening them when he was not traded or let go.”

Joe’s just doing his job. He saw just testy and sensitive you MGMers are. So he had fun with you. (still is) And you guys took the bait. Meanwhile, Joe’s laughing all the way to the bank with the highest viewed Bucs site. Because of angry little guys like you. (Hell, I think the MGM financed Joe’s new car with all traffic you wackos brought to this site)

  40. Buc1987 Says:

the ether…once again you are a character. I’m not angry at all. I’ve only became MGM since last week. I know what Joe was doing even though he says “Joe writes what Joe feels like writing about”.

I would prefer answer to this, but since you can’t find one. I’ll wait.

“What if McCown was a one hit wonder last year? Happens allllll the time ya know. Up until right now at this minute. He IS a one hit wonder. Everything he did before last season was basically NOTHING!”

Are you expecting McCown to be the same McCown from last season? I’m hoping for it, but it seems to this angry little 6 ft 1 guy that your expecting it.

It’s a yes or no answer.

I’ve already stated my reasons why I became part of the MGM last week. I ain’t going to do it again.

  41. Andrew 1 Says:

Sorry Glennon mobers, its all about # 12 this season. Insane McCown Posse holla!

  42. Buc1987 Says:

BTW…Lovie Smith is apart of the MGM too. Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

  43. Buc1987 Says:

    Andrew 1…for now!

I hope it works out if he’s the starter. I’m not EXPECTING it to though. I’m not going into the season expecting him to light the earth on fire. Further more I’m not EXPECTING him to be just as good as last season.

Hoping. Yes hoping. That’s all we have right now if McCown or Glennon is the starter. Be realistic is all I’m saying. Any MGMer that expects Glennon to light it up this year, please come forward now and honestly say so. I see some of you like Stevek just playing around and I know that’s what your doing saying stuff similar to Glennon is going to scorch the earth this season. I know the difference between fun and games and serious. I’m pretty sure most of the MGM does not EXPECT Glennon to light it up this season if given the chance. If that’s the case and most of them do think he’ll light it up, then I’m out of that mob.

It’s possible that McCown was a one hit one wonder. But I don’t see it.

And no, I’m not seeing him to be the same McCannon of last year, I expect him to be better. After 30, your intellect increases, your ability to read defenses and make quick decisions and adjustments. And he knows how this league work.

He’s been through his ups and downs. But I dont think that its a coincidence that he had his best year after he stepped away from the game temporarily (like Lovie), he did a little coaching, which shows that he can lead and teach those around around him.

So no, I don’t think he’s a 1 hit wonder. As far as Glennon, I’m not rooting against him… Its just the kid isnt ready to lead and carry 50 other grown men, most of them older than him, mentor them when they need it, and come gametime, when adjustments are needed, like they weren’t made like year, I’d have to side with the vet on this one.

    Glennon in 2017!

  45. Andrew 1 Says:

Yea hes got t-shirt with Glennon’s face on it. woops that’s Buc1987, my bad. lol. I’m not worried about you mobers, soon enough you’re going to convert to the IMP once McCown lights it up.

  46. buccinstopit Says:

All I care about is which QB can effectively get the ball to the Dunkaneers and our, out of backfield RB. The debate is moot until September, or pre-season when someone Yucs it up in live action. If it’s McCown, so be it, Glennon can start in ’15. Then we have McCown under contract as a backup if Glennon falters in ’15. If Glennon is lights out this year, then Licht is a genius holding him, not trading him, and not drafting a project. If McCown is the next Gannon, so be it, we have 4-5 years. With our Defense, we could be sitting pretty either way.

  47. rayjay1122 Says:

@Buc1987…I was not calling out anyone in particular for wanting Glennon or McCown to fail but just the whole debate of who is better in general. I hope they both do great and the coaches have to make a tough decision. I like both of them and think we can win with either. I am more nervous about the O-line and the lack of depth. Hopefully we can steal some O-line talent during preseason cuts from teams who have an abundance.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

rajay..I think most of us are worried about that O-line. Actually I think 99% of us are worried about the o-line. It’s just that I’ve never seen any hatred or maybe not hatred but strong negativity towards McCown on this site. Glennon on the other hand, now that’s a different matter.

How excited would Bucs fans be about getting McCown if he had not had the season he had with the Bears last year? Ask yourselves this question. That’s called being real. Because before last season, what was he? Be real. Hope not expect. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe I should EXPECT it, but I’m a Bucs fan I rarely expect good things.

@ether..that’s a good question for you as well. If McCown had not had the season he had with the Bears last year how excited would you be about him being the starter this year? BTW plenty of “kids” are ready to lead it happens all the time. The “kid” was not ready last season during the sh*tstorm and lack of any talent around him. I think he will now be ready sooner than you think. We’ll see, I’m excited either way. I don’t say your right or wrong. That’s not for me to judge anymore. I was a Freeman fan and this is an opinion based site. Sometimes your right, sometimes your wrong. We’ll see.

  49. buccinstopit Says:

Just remember a great word to respond to another’s argument is PERHAPS. MG is the best QB for the Bucs…Perhaps. McCown is the next Gannon…Perhaps. Lovie learned a lot in his year off…Perhaps. Tedford is a QB guru…Perhaps. A lot of optimism this off season, but every other team’s fans is going to be optimistic in the offseason. I’m sure last offseason the Texans fans would have never dreamed of the #1 draft pick.

  50. Buc1987 Says:

“The debate is moot until September, or pre-season when someone Yucs it up in live action. If it’s McCown, so be it, Glennon can start in ’15.”

buccinstopit….yeah good point, but somehow I don’t think it will fly on a site that lives off of debate. This debate will carry on until September unfortunately. If after pre-season Lovie actually does anoint McCown the starter, then I’ll be just as excited for the season.

Only my family and job are bigger than this team to me. Nothing else matters.

  51. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buc1987

just kidding around, I’m sure you know that though. Now, when you say “If McCown had not had the season he had with the Bears last year how excited would you be about him being the starter this year?”, You have to also realize that if he would have complete stunk last year, chances are Lovie would have looked somewhere else for a QB, so that question is pretty much moot. I believe his play last season exemplified his turning point as a QB.
He’s going to have a good season.

  52. Buc1987 Says:

buccinstopit …thanks for the “perhaps”. I’m going to use it quite often from now on, because all of these comments on JBF are our own speculation.

  53. Buc1987 Says:

Andrew 1 …yes but look where? Who else was out there anyways? Josh Freeman?lol

Look I trust in Lovie right now to do what’s right for our team. He’s a proven winner and Dungy disciple. So I trust him.

Your right I am a weird dude and that’s how I like it. lol

One thing about me that people don’t really see on JBF is that I always look at 2 sides to every coin. I’m sure it may seem that I’m very opinionated most of the time, but that’s not my usual demeanor.

  56. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buc1987

Well you have to believe that if he was any worse than Glennon last season they would have just stuck with Glennon, or even had Glennon starting and brought in McCown as a backup. That sounds reasonable, right?

Its funny to see 2 ex-freeminates on opposite ends of this QB debate lol.

  57. Bryan Says:

    Wait a minute. Isn’t this one of 2 3rd tier QB’s?

  58. Andrew 1 Says:

or one of 2 4th best QB’s in the divison. But don’t, Johnny is sure to eclipse both of them! LMAO.

  59. Buc1987 Says:

Andrew1 lol..there’s no opposite what so ever here. The way I see it the best man wins the job. Especially because of McCown’s past and not what he did last season.

I’ll never say before September that Glennon is better than McCown. Not even in pre-season. You won’t see me type it. I think as far as what Glennon was dealing with last season and as far as what McCown has done over the years, that BOTH of them are a gamble. BUT you’re confident in McCown. I’m confident in Lovie. If Lovie says McCown is the starter week 1 than it’s all in for me. Like I said I trust Lovie. Okay maybe put at, I trust Lovie more than McCown right now. Same goes for Glennon too. Like ether said I’m weird.lol

Bottom line : I’m MGM because Lovie says he’s the future. Schiano did not say that. Lovie Smith did. No Lovie doesn’t know QB’s. That’s not what I mean. It takes me back to. I trust Lovie Smith to do what’s right for our team and his. “Mike Glennon is the future” – Lovie Smith.

  60. Buc1987 Says:

Damn I re-read my post and it’s damn confusing man. I hope you get what I’m trying to say.

Lovie knows McCown better than anyone on this site. Which tells me that McCown is going to be the starter no matter what. Unless he sees the same McCown ( long vet career) that he cut for Jason Campbell while in Chicago in training camp this summer for the Bucs. Which IS still a possibility. It is possible. I HOPE that he is the McCown that played last season, but that’s a different team and coach, the whole 9 yards. Lots of hope for me, when it comes to McCown, but no expectations what so ever.

  61. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

MGMers put your money where your mouth is. Reserve a section of the stadium and show up dressed as 1930s gangsters.

Personally, I think you guys are living a fantasy. The chances of Glennon starting the first game are thin. Maybe if you were more realistic people would take you more seriously.
