Tedford’s Belicheat Fascination Emerges

May 9th, 2014
The presence of the new Bucs offensive coordinator somewhat explains the Bucs' drafting of a tight end tonight

A focus of the new Bucs offensive coordinator offers insight into the drafting of a tight end tonight

Shortly after the Bucs hired offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford, Joe delivered the scoop of how Tedford went to New England to study offense under Bill Belicheat and Josh McDaniels.

Tedford came back to his head coaching gig at “Cal” a changed man.

Former Tedford players at Super Bowl media day told Joe of how Tedford wanted to incorporate multiple tight end sets like what he saw of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Joe also talked about the Belicheat experience with new Bucs quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo, Tedford’s right-hand man.

Now Tedford appears to be going all in at the NFL level with this newer wrinkle to his offense.

Brandon Myers was snagged quickly in free agency after two strong seasons. Tim Wright had a sensational rookie year, and now the Bucs just drafted Austin Seferian-Jenkins in the second round.

Charles Davis on NFL Network called Seferian-Jenkins “a terror in the red zone” with “excellent hands catching the football.”

“What amazed me about him was his catching radius. His hands are unbelievable for his size,” Mike Mayock raved. “It’s basketball on grass” in Tampa.

Davis talked about the concerns of Seferian’s weight, mentioning that he played at a too-big 6-6, 280 pounds last year.

Of course, there’s only one football — and three pass-catching tight ends. But Tedford’s got two gigantic new toys to work with in a matter of 24 hours.

    Really good pick.

He was the second best TE in the draft.

Second one taken too… they stayed true to their board.

I believe it when they claim that they only like to add starters.

Bring it on!!! We need to score some points….a far cry from “pound the rock”….

Tedford’s “speed in space”….has changed to “hands in space”

  3. Patrick McV Says:

The Bucs are creating a nightmare for defenses . A red zone nightmare . It is the land of the giants . pick your posion .

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

space 2 meaning “outer space” for those in Rio Linda!!!

  5. Patrick in VA Says:

There are far worse choices one could make when deciding who to imitate

The TE pick was a curious one, but 8 TDs fof ASJ last season is pretty good. Here’s a bucs trivia question for ya: Who was the last bucs TE to score 8 or more TDs in a season? Answer- I have no idea lol, but its not Kellen Winslow.

  7. MadMax Says:

Im loving this! Finally TE is getting some LOVE. But I am surprised a bit since Timmy did so good last year. Just remember, these big TE’s can also block, so thats addressing O line too.

  8. Hawaiian Buc Says:

The player I’ve heard him getting compared to the most is Gronk. I’ll take that every day of the week.

For those Rio Linda. Lol. Those Rio lindans always need an explanation.

I’m starting to get a little bit more excited for the season….Things are starting to fall into place.

Just draft o-line the rest of the way for all I care at this point.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

    Go Bucs!

  13. tonybuc Says:

And not a lot of people are talking about his speed, he’s got some wheels for a big tight end, I’m real satisfied with this pick, go bucs!

  14. DavidM Says:

How do we not score in the end zone

  15. Buc1987 Says:

I give Licht an A- so far. Only because I wanted them to go o-line with the 2nd pick. This kids going to work out just fine. I might be buying season tickets again this season before it’s all said and done.

How’s that for you people that say I’m always negative.

Cue up the James Brown baby!

    I Feel Good.

Go Bucs see you at the games

  16. Eric Says:

Being away from the game caused Lovie to go tall!

    Method to this I think.

    Go lovie!

  17. Patrick in VA Says:

I like having Seferian-Jenkins but I’m not sure how many TEs we need. We have Wright, the new guy we just signed from the Raiders, Crabtree and now this guy?

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    TE dford knows TEs

  19. Buc1987 Says:

Wright does not have the build as this guy. Wright can play slot though imo.
I HAVE to buy season tickets now. I got see these giants on the field.

Man Lovie likes TALL no wonder he’s keeping the giraffe!

  20. Shawnbucfan Says:

Did he learn from Phil Jackson also ?

  21. Patrick in VA Says:

If we can recreate the NE offense and have the stout defense that they lacked for years then I think we’ve got a solid shot.

    Tall CB in the 3rd

  22. Oahubuc Says:

If he’s into multiple TE sets like the Pats of a couple years ago, we can’t have enough of these guys- at least to work with in camp. ASJ and Wright definitely stick, Crabtree is depth. There is no reason Wright can’t line up at Z. Now, please add two guards pronto.
