Report Of Baker Mayfield “Throwing Dimes,” Todd Bowles Thinking Of Winning A Field Goal Battle
November 6th, 2026
Are the Bucs concerned Baker Mayfield has thrown so little in games the past two weeks?
Absolutely not.
Before the Bucs shut out Atlanta in a rainstorm at The Licht House on Sunday, Todd Bowles said the Bucs were hoping to showcase their passing game.
“No, I thought Bake had a heck of a week of practice [leading up to the Falcons’. I mean he was throwing dimes and he was on point, and I was looking forward to him having a big game in the passing game,” Todd Bowles told the Buccaneers Radio Network.
But the weather and the circumstances said you’re not doing that today… So we were preparing for that. Didn’t know it would be of that magnitude where there was only three [passes] … But once you saw the weather and saw how the wind was blowing down there, you really had no choice but to try. We tried to win field position on special teams.”
Then Bowles dropped a nugget sure to give some Bucs fans sour stomach.
“We tried to take care of the football, and we tried to run the football a myriad of ways so we can have some success and hopefully win a 6- or a 9-3 ball game from a field goal standpoint, but [I] didn’t know we were gonna run it that well. And once that started going like that, we just stayed with it.”
Joe’s not sure why Bowles thought rain would have the Bucs seeking a few field goals as a path to victory. Touchdowns happen in rain (and snow), too.

We will needs tuds to beat the Bears, not field goals. This team is capable of beating the bears, but will have to figure out ways to move the ball through the air….and stay ahead of the sticks with first and second down throws while hammering the run game.
November 6th, 2026 at 1:35 pm
Well, thats good to hear. Bottom line, its easier for the Oline to have their way pushing through for a run game in horrible wet weather. Its a whole different beast with a dry field and pass protect.
As always, I’ll be rooting for Bake and the boys, coaches too….but this isnt panthers or dirty birds coming up. We better be scheming some offensive plays that takes advantage of the Bears DB’s. PLUS, their O line isnt the greatest, especially at LT… ATTACK THAT SIDE!!

If only he had receivers…
Take what you see Baker and THROW!
Positive yardage!

I can see our pass rush getting home even without blitzing, but I presume we will blitz Chicago more than we have the last two weeks against Carolina and Atlanta. Caleb isn’t as good when pressured and holds the ball longer than most of the QB’s we’ve face. He hasn’t run with his legs since he came back, but id rather have him try to scramble than for him to just point and click and distribute the ball all game long like a point guard. Their run game is ineffecient with Swift so the defense can pin their ears back if they are the ones playing behind the sticks.

Todd Bowles … “We tried to take care of the football, and we tried to run the football a myriad of ways so we can have some success and hopefully win a 6- or a 9-3 ball game”.
Hmmm, interestingly. Todd was willing to concede that the Falcons would score 1 FG.
For anyone wondering, since Bowles took over as HC in 2022, the Bucs’ defense has thrown 2 shutouts, and had 2 other games in which we limited opponents to only 1 FG. Not sure that I’d EXPECT results like that very often if I were the HC, but there is a precedent (4 games of 3 pts or less out of the 80 that we’ve played with Todd as our HC).
Hey, he had a 5% chance of hitting that nail on the head. Even better than his chances of winning the lottery.

Noting for Coach Bowles’ future reference: nowhere in the rules says that we must keep the other team in the game.
It worked against the Falcons; but did not against the Browns, Packers, & Steelers.
D is playing lights out this year. Just saying scoring TD’s vs FG’s increases our chances of winning.

Mayfield throwing dimes?
Suuuuure he is.
The same week that Mayfield, in an interview elsewhere, said he was told the Thumb wouldn’t be normal until the offseason.
He struggled taking a snap from center, for Gawds sake!
The only reason Mayfield is being forced/Allowed to play, is because the league saw enough of Daniels to realize he doesn’t have the arm strength for the NFL.
He can’t it the Sideline passes. So that’s that for him.
Mayfields thumb was so badly dislocated, that the bone tore thru the skin.
The bone came thru the skin.
He ain’t throwing dimes until July, folks

What an absolute idiot Todd Bowles continues to prove he is.
He’s in Forest Gump territory. Just below the minimum IQ.
Same with his coaching style and overall record as a HC.
Bumbling, incompetent, undisciplined, incoherent, and mediocre.
Every year is the same with Todd. Failure on full display.

So it supposed to give fans sour stomach when the coach says it could be a low scoring affair in a blowing rain ? Damn Joe, you running out of shlt to shade Todd with or what… tsk tsk Jiminy Christmas, some coaches don’t want any part of field goals in rain and wind, and a lot of coaches would never consider winning with a few field goals in advance of any game. –Joe
Reports of Baker and the pass game clicking in practice the past 2 weeks are welcome. Let’s hope it transfers to game time.

Does everyone member what McDaniels used to do for tom in NE? He’d dial up a short passing game to the running backs underneath on first downs from play action to get 4-6 yards on first down, early in the game. That got tom going and pulled the defense up.
I don’t know if Robinson or the offense as a whole has this type of intuition or ability, but it helped move the chains. We won’t be running the ball at 6 yards a haul on Sunday night so better come up with something else. Gotta keep the bears offense off the field
Of course Todd wants to win every game by kicking 5 field goals so maybe I’m wasting my breath.

“Touchdowns happen in the rain”
Yeah, on the ground!
Interceptions happen in the rain.

I don’t know how any coach looks at rain and high winds and thinks “field goals!”

Mayfield apparently had such a great practice week of throwing the ball, Bowles decided on carrying that over into Sunday’s game in Tampa until Mother nature let loose a torrential deluge that put an end to that game plan.
Instead, Mother Nature said No and forced the Bucs and Todd Bowles to abandon the passing game for a pound and grind running game.
Boy, did that discovery reveal the Bucs real identity. All I have to say is Thank you Lord for your Divine intervention.

The Vikings beat the Bears 9-3 in a torrential rainstorm, sometimes the weather is just that bad
November 6th, 2026 at 3:10 pm
Did we win ?
How many field goals did we kick ?
Good call by Todd – great win by the boys 👏🏼
November 6th, 2026 at 4:01 pm
What a surprise. Anyone who has watched the Bucs in the Bowles era is well aware for his affinity for his offense playing for field goals. The Falcons offense is poor and the Bears do not play for 3, they want to score 7 every time they start an offensive drive. The run game has been very effective, but the goal should be to score touchdowns. We need leadership that sees settling for a field goal as a LAST resort, not a preferred gameplan.

Field goals and Defense..Send the Bears back in time..
Bears have their hands full
GO BUCS!

Mayfields due
November 6th, 2026 at 5:04 pm
This is silly. It wasn’t just rain it was blinding rain and howling wind. He knew both teams would mostly abandon the pass and let the run on defense so field position would be key. It was likely to be low scoring. What’s the big freaking deal? He’s not saying he wouldn’t take a TD if available!
November 6th, 2026 at 5:08 pm
Ok Tim, so we’re just going to ignore that he threw an absolute beauty of a dime to Hurst who just couldn’t keep possession, that he threw a nice pass to a wide open Gainwell that just bounced off his hands and into the dirt and that backwards pass to Bucky who proceeded to fumble. Out of 4 pass attempted, 3 were on the money and 1 was thrown out of bound. In a torrential downpour with high winds… So explain to me how you are dubious that Baker has been throwing accurately the past week or two?

Proof was in the pudding,
November 6th, 2026 at 5:38 pm
if bowles wants to play a field goal game on sunday night, we lose and bad…
chicago is going to play a td game in front of the national audience…
playing for field goals is literally like playing for safeties…just 1 point better…
digest that…
ummmm…..”we won the game 10-7, because of the 5 safeties from our defense”…….lol…no one has ever said that
November 6th, 2026 at 5:46 pm
It’s hilarious to me that we’re acting like Baker is Trent Dilfer for the rest of the season. Do you guys genuinely believe they’re trying to hide him because he’s bad? The 155 Million dollar man?
Stay on that side when he lights it up this week. The man is due.
They won’t be able to lean on the run game like they have the past two games. Do you guys understand what an anomaly is, or are we just overreacting to everything now? One of the Joe(s) needs to be checked.. He’s not good at rage bait.
November 6th, 2026 at 6:04 pm
I hope we will do some passing. Just not the way we have been. We just can’t wait to call a pass after 2 short runs. We also can’t run down the field and then throw 3 incomplete passes once we pass the 20 yard line. Gotta mix it up to be successful.

What’s “on display” is your racist targeting of Todd Bowles. How do you know what his IQ is?

Deff never have liked his conservative approach. No risk it no biscuit.
November 6th, 2026 at 10:06 pm
We have McLaughlin. I see Todd’s point. He hit three kicks in the rain/wind with no problem.
Atlanta had problems.
We should’ve had two rushing TDs tho.
Bet Bucky would love to have that moment back. He’d hug the ball flat on a do over.

DID YALL WATCH THE BEARS HAWKS GAME ?? IF MAGUMI IS BACK WITH THE BEARS AND JEFFERY SIMMENS A BEAST THEY JUST PICKED UP ALL PRO ITS GOING TO BE A LONG NIGHT FOR BAKER . ZAC BETTER GET HIS PASS GAME GOING PRONTO ! BY
November 7th, 2026 at 1:24 am
He has a limiting belief system. Opposite of no risk it no biscuit. Let’s not put the ball in harms way is his way of saying he doesn’t trust BAKER to protect the he ball. Baker is going to fumble the ball right out of a job for Bowles. Baker has him scared. It’s a don’t put the ball in harms way Bucs life!
