Jalon Daniels Does Solid Work, Impresses Teammate

October 4th, 2026

Did not embarrass himself.

With the possible exception of a pick, Joe doesn’t think you can hang this loss on Bucs quarterback Jalon Daniels.

The undrafted rookie got his first start today and threw a pick on the Bucs’ second possession that eventually led to a Packers touchdown. After that, he played solid.

Just about everyone else didn’t.

Ld by Daniels, the Bucs converted 41 percent of their third down conversions. That’s comparable to Week 1 and Week 2 and significantly better than Week 3, when Baker Mayfield was behind center.

Overall, Joe thought Daniels played smart ball. Especially for an undrafted rookie making his first NFL start.

One Daniels teammate on the offensive side of the ball thought Daniels’ first at-bat as a starter was really solid.

“He was good, very good,” Bucs receiver Tez Johnson said. “He played extremely well. Did really great for a young quarterback. Showed confidence. He’s very confident.

“Everybody has a spark on this team but he added a spark in his own way.”

Couldn’t Daniels have played better before all the Packers fans who at times took over the stadium? Sure. But he’s not the reason the Bucs lost.

Maybe if guys could hang onto the passes and defenders could sack the @##$$%^&^ quarterback once a decade the Bucs could have pulled out a win today.

  2. TampaBayBucFan Says:

Poor play calling stalled out drives

  3. Marky mark Says:

He is the reason we lost. Defense gave him two turn overs , no special teams td,s given up, no rain on a final drive. He had 2 picks in a perfect game by defense and special teams. Daniel’s lost the game. We should have hired Garrapolo after Baker went down.

  4. TampaBayBucFan Says:

    Line not protecting

  5. Kidfloflo Says:

He was not the messiah, the offense didn’t magically click with him in, he looked just like a smart fan knew he would, he is NOT better than Baker…and we will get blown out by a pissed off Cowboys team who lost to a winless team today, and won’t do it again next week! And if the Packers weren’t awful as well and didn’t turn the ball over twice inside the 30, we could have and should have lost by at least 9…probably 17…so put this inane controversy to bed Daniel bois

  6. Rod Munch Says:

For an UDFA starting his first game, really for just about any rookie starting his first game, he looked good. Sure, you want better results, but you see the process is there, you see a guy who is confident, mostly made good decisions, showed very good mobility, has a very good arm. Everything you want is there to build on, and what a coup if you had an UDFA QB who develops into something.

Instead, the owners meddled, and the rookie with promise will be benched and not allowed to develop because Baker is too expensive to bench. It’s a sad and hopeless situation.

  7. Lakeland Says:

    We lost as a team
There will be bumps and bruises along the way
We could get more production from our veterans
But, that’s another story for another day

No need to panic and throw in the towel
    It’s far from being over

There’s still a whole lot of football left to play

  8. aBUCStruth Says:

Da boi played awful. Showed why he went undrafted. And only the Yuccs look at him and says ā€œYup that’s our backup QBā€ mind you this is the same team who made a scout team TE for the panthers and paid him 55 million a yr to play QB. It’s the same organization who paid Vita to be absent all yr. Same team who paid Cade Otton. Same team who believes this O-line is top 10. When Brady left, the entire organization should’ve went right into rebuild mode. Now look at us in Shambles. Outright disgusting.

  9. Bucsuck Says:

He played like an ufa qb….17 game season he wins 3 games…

  10. Surf Says:

It was the same old story 0-5 incoming

  11. Kidfloflo Says:

I stand corrected….Dallas won…and still will kill us

  12. Will Says:

It’s a team effort. Only a select few are contributing. The rest are lazy, no effort team of slackers.

  13. Tony1775 Says:

To bad Tez couldn’t help his rookie QB, and learn how to line up. Tez had terrible penalty in key time.

  14. Tony1775 Says:

Bucsuck. Baker is 3-11, and cost $55 milly a year.

  15. Bucs East Coast Says:

    Good point

The bucs are 0 wins 4 loses and 1 moral victory for the rookie QB.

His QBR rating of 65 will get the bucs a bye in the feel good about your self league.

Feel good about losing? To a QB who won’t be starting as soon as Baker is back to manage the transition to the new coaching staff next year?

Let’s get him a really nice participation ribbon.

  16. Bosch Says:

Bucs need to make decisions as to who to appoint as interim coordinators for offense and defense immediately following Thursday’s loss to the Cowboys.

  17. Kidfloflo Says:

He was not the messiah, the offense didn’t magically click with him in, he looked just like a smart fan knew he would, he is NOT better than Baker…and we will get blown out by a angry o Cowboys team who almost lost to a winless team today, and won’t do it again next week! And if the Packers weren’t awful as well and didn’t turn the ball over twice inside the 30, we could have and should have lost by at least 9…probably 17…so put this inane controversy to bed Daniel bois

  18. Bojim Says:

Looking forward to him play next week.

  19. Tom Edrington Says:

I don’t know what people expected from this kid…..he did okay……Bucs were in it until they weren’t…..but now there’s film on him and things aren’t going to be good for the Bucs in Dallas.

  20. Lakeland Says:

I’m looking at it this way

I still have 13 Bucs games to watch
Anything can happen during these 13 games

Believe in yourself…….and anything is possible

  21. David Says:

Two games in a row, where the defense played very well. The problem has been the offense and the problem with the offense, other than the fact they had a rookie quarterback so it was limited with playcalling, is the offensive line. They simply have not been good enough.
How many guys blitzed up the middle with a free run at the QB???

They lost the first game because of turnovers.
They’ve lost the last two because the offensive line has not been good enough. I know they changed their blocking scheme with the new OC, but they’ve had the off-season & four games, shouldn’t have that many guys with free runs at your quarterback.

Jason Licht should be talking to GRUDEN right now.
I honestly think he ran his course initially, but he would be the perfect coach for Baker Mayfield, and the perfect coach to fire up this defense with whatever coordinator

  22. Miller5252 Says:

You’re asking an undrafted QB with 1 preseason to figure out reads and pickups first try. He did fine for his first go and he got better as the game went on. Now, you look at his coaches and he did way better than he should have. At 0-3 I don’t get why you don’t just push the ball with all the weapons we’re paying for. Against Dallas it’s time to start using them or look at draft picks.

  23. Lightningvinny1 Says:

The line blocked about the same for JD ,,,, I don’t want to hear anymore that we have a top 5 line,,, they are broken

  24. Honest Buc Fan Says:

Stupid spin article. The qb played liked a rookie. I don’t care what or who a professional athlete impressed. The clown had two poor int and little feel. I went back to read the draft wrote up on him from Ourlads. It’s what we saw today- big arm, no where close to NFL due to poor vision and basic decision making. Undraftable.

    Bust already, like Bain.

No more pillow talk stories. Team is 0-4. Not run by adults. Look at Rays and Lighting, run by non MAGA types- better results.

  25. Lakeland Says:

Baker might be out for 6 weeks

This rookie will get a lot of experience
The veterans need to up their level of play
The coaches has to coach it better

    We can do this thing

  26. BucsFan2023 Says:

There’s a certain amount of hypocricpy going on here when 175 yards and 2 picks is all of a sudden good. It’s not good but it’s not surprising. The O line still stinks. The D line still stinks. Todd’s defense, when it really counts, stinks.

  27. Buc in VA Says:

Jalon was fine. YaYa? Not so much. Kancey? Sorry. Vita? Mmm. Nope.

  28. Frank Pillow Says:

Anyone putting this L on the kid is insane. Sure, there was one bad INT (though 19 sure ran a soft route). He was running for his life behind the shakiest per dollar OL in NFL history. Looking for WRs who can’t get open (Ebuka’s fall from grace is stunningly Michael Clayton-esque). And basically forced to hand off the Bucky up the middle using the one formation and two running plays we’re capable of barely executing. Theres no intermediate passing game. No 3 step drops. No misdirection. No play action. He achieved the exact same result in this offense as Baker. Just did so at a fraction of the price.

  29. DBS Says:

    Got to love this one.
    We lost as a team.

Of course if Baker was the QB today it would read differently. It would read the defense only gave up 17 points. Baker only scored 14. This loss is on Mayfield.

  31. chad Says:

    baker will
not be out 6 weeks. i’m calling it now. baker will be out 2 weeks and that’s it. i tried to tell people jalon ain’t gonna do anything special, no qb can succeed behind this o-line and playcalling. turns out baker wasn’t the biggest issue, if he was, it would’ve been fixed by jalon

  32. Winny Testaverde Says:

The VV and BK extensions put this franchise in a final tailspin. At least if VV was traded and BK was eyeballing a pay cut and/or free agency after the season…things would seem a little brighter. A highly drafted QB would be a possibility. VV completely quit on the team and was begging for a trade. Why Bright Licht didn’t oblige him while dumping his salary is beyond me. He has less than zero trade value now.

  33. Itzok Says:

He played as well as baker has been which isn’t saying much.

  34. BucsfanBrennan Says:

I couldn’t imagine the reactions if Baker threw for 150 yards and three picks. I’m sure everyone would say he was “solid” lol

  35. Lakeland Says:

The kid contract is 3’years, $3,125,000
    Baker contract is 3’years, $165, 000,000

Fans judge a player by their value to the team
That’s why fans are so hard on Baker, Vea, Anzalone, Winfield etc

The rook played good based on his contract
He’s a low paid backup QB

That’s how it work in the NFL

  36. BucsfanBrennan Says:

Yes Lakeland but. No one said “based on his pay” they just said he played solid which is objectively untrue

  37. Tragic outcome Todd Says:

    Just one teammate was impressed.

  38. Lakeland Says:

The rookie didn’t play solid, he played ok for a low paid rookie

If he was a $20 million veteran
I would go as far as saying he stinks

  39. Destinjohnny Says:

    The gm let him down

  40. Erik with Unique Modern Art Says:

Daniels is our best QB at this point in time, even when Baker returns.

Even with a couple bad decisions, Daniels looked like the best player on the field on either team.

  41. J Says:

We could’ve kept Trask and had the same result, if not better. Green Bay is not the elite team to play against and we lost. Next week will be 0-5 and we’ll get Baker back. And we lose to the Steelers with the excuse Baker needs to find his groove after being out. One thing is for sure though. Bowles is here to stay. Fire him and the Glazers would have to shell out real money to get anything to coach this dumpster fire crew.

  42. BucfaninOregon Says:

No need to panic and throw in the towel
    It’s far from being over

There’s still a whole lot of football left to play….Lakeland

OK, Lakeland you won for biggest Pollyanna of the YEAR! (POY)
Are you trying to distinguish yourself from ALL the others on this board or you just that mentally impaired?

The best we Bucs fans can hope for is that after we get boat-raced this Thursday, it will be the best time this season to fire Bowles. Shiano was better than this.

  43. Lakeland Says:

We need to draft a RB1 next season
We need bigger WRs, and a WR1

We need to dismantle this OLine
Wirfs and Goedeke are the only keepers
We need an offensive minded Head Coach
But if we hire another defensive minded Head Coach
We need an offensive coordinator with vision, one that’s creative

  44. Lakeland Says:

    It’s not over yet

    When it’s Officially over
I will be the first to throw in the towel
We still have a lot of football left

But this offense need a facelift

  45. Miller5252 Says:

Manning threw 3 picks in his first NFL game. Baker has been playing 9 years and you’re trying to compare Jalons performance today against Baker….. makes total sense. There are more problems than Baker, but when you get 165 mill and play barely better than a rookie, you better be ready for fans to be mad about it.

  46. johnnythemoon Says:

Jalon not great it was his first game what is 155mill Bakers excuse ?

  47. Tye Says:

    ‘Impresses Teammate’

Teammates that aren’t even impressive either!

  48. Lakeland Says:

But this offense need a facelift regardless of the season outcome

We still have a chance of making the playoffs
Even if we have a .0000000001% chance of making the playoffs
    We still have a chance

  49. BucsfanBrennan Says:

Johnny, there both playing with an awful O-line that gets penalized all the time, receivers who drop half of there passes, a Coordinator who doesn’t have a clue. The QB position is not our main issue bud

  50. Lucas Oil Says:

    The OC is a loser.
Bowles is barely awake and coherent.
My predictiction is that Jalen will be better than Mayfield but will sit for 3 years so that the Glasers can justify the silly $ that they guaranteed Baker.

  51. Aubpierce Says:

After the Dallas loss it will be the perfect time to fire Bowles, Robinson and dim Licht. Bring back Arians and let him suffer just like the rest of us. At least it will be fun watching at him scream at the officials. Thanks, Arians for gifting us with Bowles.

  52. Lakeland Says:

I think we need a bigger QB
A big rifle arm QB with a cannon for an arm
We’re not going anywhere with these midgets

  53. Lucas Oil Says:

Winfield I suspect tore an upper abdominal muscle… will be out for for 6 weeks.

  54. BUCDADDY Says:

The same excuse. Josh Allen wouldn’t be good on this team. Been saying it since week 2. The o-line is quite possibly the worst in the league, and the receivers are all mid-level receivers that can’t get open. I think they should’ve waited until the off season to see how Baker played to see if he was worth the investment, especially after he turned them down on the initial offer, but who else could we have gotten to play here? Not saying we should have forked over that much, but thank Kyler Murray for starting this mess.

I believe Baker could’ve won this game, but who knows? Jalon definitely shouldn’t be the starter. That’s for sure.

But drafting a QB won’t fix all the problems we have. You can hate Baker all you want, but he was the best option in our situation. And blaming only Baker is hilarious, especially when Jalon couldn’t beat the Packers, one of the worst teams in the league right now. My point is, Jalon committed 2 terrible turnovers, but I still dont know if we win with all the other problems going on.

The BakerHaters would have completely blamed Baker for today’s loss if he played the way Jalon did, but yet, none of you have. Now, all of a sudden, you idiots wanna point out the bad o-line, Zac Robinson, and the terrible defense. Lol!

  55. 813bucboi Says:

    Tough loss

This is a poorly coached team….

Barton needs to go to LG and Brendenson to center

Gotta use ko kief in the backfield more in the run game

route combinations are elementary that’s why CBs sticking to a WRs

    $hit is just bad

    GO BUCS

  56. McBay Says:

Great win! Todd is the man.

  57. Day1-76 Says:

Nothing against him, because is an undrafted rookie, but it’s a joke that he is the best option they have. “Guru” Gm Licht is not smart. Right when he was named the #2 QB I knew Baker was going to get injured early.

  58. Lightningvinny1 Says:

jD is perfect for a team like this ,,, now if he needs to pass for a living then noooooo good ,,, but running around like a sand lot QB ,, he’s perfect , just not an NFL QB ,,, shame on Bowles , a legit back up could have won that game

  59. King of Citrus Park Says:

Can this division be won with 5 wins?

  60. Lakeland Says:

    I said before the season
The offense would be our biggest downfall
Jalon Daniels or Baker Mayfield isn’t the answer
They both are below average QBs
    The WRs are below average
    The RBs are below average
    The TEs are below average
    The OLine is below average
The OC and HC is below average

The below average offense is dragging the team down

  61. Lakeland Says:

But you can expect a UDFA QB to be below average
And you expect the 3rd highest paid QB to be elite

  62. dan the bucs fan Says:

Joe you have to be fair and impartial. If this was Baker you would not be giving him the same kind of grace. The kid was and today he had two interceptions and a third one they dropped cause it was fourth down anyway. Stay objective if your going trash Baker he played much better over the first three games against teams that had much better defenses.

  63. BucsfanBrennan Says:

How can you know that the QB’s are not the answer when they have no surrounding cast???

  64. dan the bucs fan Says:

ON another note the play calling today was better. When your online stinks you run the ball to protect them. We should be a run first team always with this roster. It doesn’t really matter though in all honesty we need to blow this thing up.

  65. McBay Says:

And, Lakeland, don’t forget – Bucs have Bowles. His plan is starting to unfold. Maybe not this season or next, but soon. I’ve never been more pumped about this team.

  66. Nick jannette Says:

    Oh yeah jags won again

  67. McBay Says:

It must be said, StPeteMatt and Lakeland should be on Jason Licht’s staff. Spot on takes.

  68. Lakeland Says:

We need a QB with a big arm

Jalon and Baker are weak arm midgets
    They are not the answer
    I’m sorry, but that’s what I see

  69. Lakeland Says:

    McBay,

I said our OC and HC is below average
What more you want me to say

  70. Buckinator Says:

We missed a critical timeout at the end of the first half. We had 3 to work with. Had we taken that time out and slowed things up a little, our quarterback could have set the stage for a touchdown. Instead, we rushed into something and ended up throwing an interception. The kid has plenty of confidence and if we would have let him take control of the huddle, I’m sure things would have turned out differently. Coach’s fault!

  71. Scott Says:

He made a couple of rookie mistakes but other than that played quick and decisive. Took off quickly or took the sack if he had to. He made some nice throws.

  72. Bucfan1988 Says:

Yo, Baker has a huge arm. He’s just short and doesn’t go thru reads AT ALL now.

I’ll take a weaker arm QB that has the better mental game.
    šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

  73. Lakeland Says:

I would be the first to admit that we have piss poor coaching

But I’m not going as far as saying the season is over
We still have a legitimate shot at winning this division
There’s 13 games left to play, including 6 division games

We still control our destiny, just as other teams
It’s not like we need teams to lose for us to get in

All we need to do is start winning football games
Tomorrow is a new day, we will be a new team

We just need to get it done on the field

  74. Bucslosecoverthestadium Says:

Couldn’t even get a pass off on the most important and last possession. Someone in the backfield almost every snap. Play calling terrible. Our center is flawed. Run up the middle on first down is back. Still can’t cover right ends. Did we even get a sack today? How many sacks did we give up? Just good enough to lose by one play. Bucs beating Bucs!

  75. Lakeland Says:

We’re shooting ourselves in the foot too much
    Missing too many simple assignments
    There’s a lack of focus

And this all started at the beginning of last season
We doing the same things but winning nail biters at the end
Now we’re losing these nail biters

We need to put together a complete, solid football game
    And win convincingly, going away

  76. Steve V Says:

    They need mayfield back,just do,

  77. Capt.Tim Says:

He had 2 interceptions, and a QB rating of 64
    He didn’t play well.

But no one could Win with our line, WRs, TEs, OC, and Head Coach.
Jaylon has Moxie. That’s a good thing.
But he is a long way from being an NFL QB.

  78. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

    Fakerboiis hate Daniels

  79. FireBowles58! Says:

will be lucky to win 1-2 games….you don’t simply start playing respectful football… if there is any true talent on this team then obviously this coaching staff is not utilizing/developing it… you have players making huge sums of money and not being used properly…
