Todd Bowles: No Need For Extra Around Jalon Daniels

Stay the course.
That was a message from Bucs head coach Todd Bowles today as it relates to undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels, who will start Sunday against the Packers at The Licht House.
Daniels just has to be who he was all spring and summer and the players around him don’t need to rally around Daniels, Bowles said. “[Daniels’] performance speaks for itself when he’s out there. His confidence speaks for itself and [teammates] rally around him.”
Bowles added that players don’t need to step up and do more to rally around the rookie.
“I think everybody has to do their job; they don’t have to do anything more than they’re doing,” Bowles said.

The Packers have their issues, so not the worse team to have Daniels make his NFL debut against. He may actually offer an advantage over baker when being chased out of the pocket. He seems more under control when scrambling than Baker, better at keeping is eyes downfield and avoiding taking unnecessary hits. If nothing else, it will be interesting to see how he responds.

It’s crazy that some of yall are surprised the Bucs are 0-3. There was nothing good about this team to end last season and very little changed going into this season. From game planning, to coaching, to execution this team has been atrocious since the bye week of last year. It wasn’t that hard to see, and when y’all were told how bad it was going to be you had no arguments, so you resorted to calling those of us who saw this coming “trolls”.

Sports is so weird one play here, one play there and another play here and the Bucs could be 2-1 or 3-0, you know games are so close a touchdown instead of a fumble at the goal line a catch in the end zone and a stop on a punt return is all it took. ucs have won 2 games out of the last 12 games with Baker under center. It has been awful football, the worst football I have ever watched. My husband refuses to watch Bucs game anymore. Playing a different quarterback is the best thing that could happen to this team. It cannot possibly hurt or get worse. Unless of course the O-Line allows Jalon Daniels to get killed. I have much more confidence in Jalon then I do in Baker. I advocated for the Bucs to use the tag next year on Baker but this is a stupid team with even more stupid owners.

The book on Mayfield is put pressure on him to generate Happy Feet and then the D is 90% completed for that play.
I doubt if Mayfield is capable of standing in the pocket under pressure and going through reads… and Opponents know it.

By PFF grade, the Buccaneers are the second-worst pass-rushing team through three weeks. Bucs have a 30.8% pressure rate (27th). So much for the defense digging Jalon out of a mess. Defense might have Nacho Trotter Bain inactive – offense will have Mayfield McMillan and maaaybe Bucky inactive .. the only certain inactive is Baker but still ..

Historically Baker was considered to be a mid-tier QB when under pressure; not great, not gross on average, but with definite ‘highs & lows’. Found an article dated back on 21 Oct 2020 when he was with Cleveland titled ‘How Baker Mayfield is performing under pressure (and creating it on his own)’ in what I presume is Cleveland’s version of JBF. It dealt with the Browns 38-7 loss to the Steelers that year in which Mayfield was pressured on almost half his dropbacks. Here’s a snippet from that article:
“In terms of Mayfield vs. pressure and blitzes, Sunday’s loss was a low point. Mayfield was 2-of-6 for nine yards, an interception, a throwaway and four sacks on those pressured dropbacks. Pro Football Focus analysis put the pressures at 43.4 percent of his dropbacks. Much of it came on third down, which, in the first half, went like this: pick-6, sack, incompletion, incompletion under pressure, pick under pressure, 5-yard screen pass to Kareem Hunt, throwaway under pressure.”
Sounds eerily familiar. I’m wondering if last year’s ‘beatings’ in the 2nd half of the season have made Baker gun-shy in the pocket. Our OLine hasn’t been creating much of a ‘pocket’ at all for him, and to avoid getting pummeled it’s been looking like he’s taking ‘evasive action’ even before he has to. Licht was ADAMANTLY AGAINST giving Mayfield a second contract WITHOUT “PROOF OF PLAY”… Vita Vea as well!
So WHO IS at fault? THAT’S EASY. The Jack @$$es that write the checks! That’s WHO! Licht was asked in an interview, and he in a very low key but straight up way told EVERYBODY in the interview questioning his thinking on the matter of the extensions, that “he received a call” from the top of the heap, “THE OWNERS”, “Ordering Him To Extend Mayfield EVEN WITH the GM’s best advice NOT TO DO IT!”
It IS WELL KNOW that Many were getting peaced that Licht REFUSED TO lay down and give in to the RIDICULOUSLY ABSURD demands of Baker Mayfield and Vita Vea.

The most interesting thing to watch, I think, will be the sack percentage.
Baker currently leads the NFL in sacks and sack percentage – but much of that has to do with Baker holding the ball forever and not making throws. I haven’t seen week 3’s ALL22 yet, but in the first two weeks he had guys open, and just refused to throw the ball (which is typical of Baker when he has no confidence in himself). Baker actually started out yesterday strong, he was throwing with confidence and looked pretty good, then slowly, he just went back to being who has been for the last 12 games, started holding the ball, started hesitating, and in complete fairness, the awful blocking from the TEs and RBs didn’t help him (again, the reason I said many many times White was going to be missed, and most people blew that off).
The big downside for Daniels in this situation is the history of UDFA QBs. They almost never do well when they’re forced into games early in their career. Even if they become good players down the road, those first games are generally a disaster. However, Daniels isn’t a typical UDFA in my opinion. He’s got a good arm, he’s got good mobility, and he played a lot of college football at a high level – that might give him more of a chance than most guys in his situation have.
Anyways, I’ll personally set my expectations pretty low and just hope for the best. If Baker misses 4-games, I think the most people should realistically hope for is just to see improvement, and maybe a decent game by week 3 or 4. Had this happened later in the season, I think he’d be in better shape.
At the same time, Daniels can’t do worse than Baker has in the W/L column this year, and Baker is 2-10 in his last 12, so it’s very difficult to be worse than that.
Hopefully it goes well, at least Daniels will bring some energy to the team after Baker has basically ran it into the ground.

Nope, dig some more into his past as a player whether NFL or at OU, the happy feet thing is a BAKER problem that’s been with him his entire career even in 2024, when he bumped his head on his productivity ceiling and is now cascading back down to reality. Law of averages always wins DR, I get shooting Baker bail but he’s got $165M to buy all the help he needs.

“I already know what exactly I need to work on and improve going forward,” Mayfield said via the Akron Beacon-Journal. “That is the exciting thing about it, it is always a continual process of getting better and improving.”
Which is great. Mayfield would be lying to himself if he didn’t believe he had room for improvement; despite having some of the best offensive skill players in the NFL on the field with him, his numbers dipped from last year in pretty much every category.
But here’s where Mayfield sounded incredibly short-sighted and, really, arrogant: He has no interest in working with a private coach.
“I do not need somebody to teach me how to do a three-step drop,” Mayfield said. “I can look at film and be critical of myself. Throughout this process, I have had people help me out along the way and try and take things from different people. Anytime I am around somebody, I ask questions. Do not act like I have it all figured out.”
Offensive coordinator Todd Monken knows players at all positions can benefit from offseason position-specific work or strength and conditioning work.
“You have it at all positions. Some are strength and conditioning. Some are technical,” Monken said. “All of it is good; people that dedicate their time and their livelihood to improve players’ performance on the field. But there is a difference between tutoring and training and then what we have to do, which is be held accountable for their actions.”
Monken wouldn’t affirm to media that Mayfield’s footwork, which was flawed this season, needed work or that it greatly improved through the course of season.
“There are times you really see improvement there, where he is able to go through his reads, his progressions. We have protected better the last few weeks, which I think has helped. We just have to continue in terms of route discipline and protection, and I think then the confidence will continue to grow,” Monken said.
Mayfield did acknowledge it needed work but again said he will fix it on his own.
“I can have somebody watch my feet … just having somebody film it and being able to look back on that,” he said. “Repetitions are the way to get better for me. That’s just how it is has been, doing that and filming it.”
From the end of the 2019 season, and since the only time he’s gotten with a QB coach is after the 2022 season and before signing with us. Since then haven’t heard a peep. Again, it’s HIS problem not just on the shoulders of our or any OL he’s played with in his career, because the problem has travelled with him.

What makes you think any of them would actually sign with the Bucs? Eli Manning refused to play for San Diego and forced his way to NY, and there is no way that another Manning would accept coming to a team strangled with Baker’s terrible contract. The other top QBs also would likely feel the same way – and college QBs have way more power to dictate this stuff than they did in the past.
If the Bucs did find themselves in this situation, I don’t think it’s going to go the way people assume it will. The Baker situation could easily tank this team for a half a decade, even in 2029, the Bucs would still have a $30M cap hit on the books from this awful deal.
But who knows, maybe some time off “to get healthy” is just what Baker needs and he comes back as MVP Baker.

It’ll be very interesting to see what this oline looks like with Daniels. I’m guessing it’ll look much better and the idiot Baker fans will say “if only they blocked like that for Baker”.

The oline hasn’t been great, but when the QB has happy feet, holds the ball and runs into sacks, it makes the oline look much worse.
Go watch other teams and their QBs have a rhythm, they hit their back foot and let it rip. They also give their WRs chances to make plays or draw and interference as opposed to launching the ball 10 yards over their heads.

Obvious One – Correct, I am bringing up the Bo Jackson situation, but also the Eli Manning situation. QBs can simply say they won’t play, and would the Bucs still risk drafting them with a top pick anyways? They could just refuse to sign and try to force a trade – and in any case, they could drag out the process forever and turn it into a circus. Also with dumb local judges getting involved with this stuff, who isn’t to say one them says a player who is drafted can’t return to college so long as they never signed and never practiced with the team, etc.
The point is those top QB prospects could cause chaos by just saying they don’t want to come to a team that is crippled by an awful deal like Baker’s contract, and be in a situation where Baker is known to throw hissy fits when he’s presented with legit competition.
Finally the Glazers aren’t really known for wanting controversy and I think they’d just step in and tell whoever the GM is at that point to go the safe route, trade the pick or pick another position and say we have full confidence in Baker.

We’ll know in about 6 days if there’s a Real Situation between Mayfield and the O line. There doesn’t seem to be away for Mayfield to stop the View from a New vantage point like he was able to with Trask. Who knows? The only “thing” that IS CLEAR is that it’s SURLY TIME FOR A CHANGE!
Unfortunately, we need a FULL rebuild yet we’re saddled with a potential nuclear bomb in between us and real happiness.
All Baker has to do is FIX Everything He Screwed Up! We STILL MUST draft one of the top three qb’s IF we can…

The entire “player power” concept relies on having an exit door. NIL gives underclassmen a multi-million-dollar safety net to stay in school and refuse to enter the draft. But once that safety net disappears at the end of their senior year, or once they enter the draft, the league’s machine regains full control.
Look at history: Bo Jackson’s famous 1986 refusal to play for Tampa Bay worked only because he had a top-tier MLB career waiting for him, while Eli Manning’s 2004 stance against the Chargers relied on a pre-2011 CBA in which rookie contracts weren’t fixed and his camp could threaten an extended, costly holdout.
In today’s league, those scenarios are practically impossible. Modern multi-sport alternatives like Bo’s don’t exist at that financial level, and the current rookie wage scale strips away Eli’s holdout leverage. At its core, the NFL relies on competitive balance. A player successfully refusing to play for the team that drafted him would disrupt the system so severely that the league would likely step in and rewrite the rules to shut it down.
This isn’t your father’s NFL, and it’s definitely not your grandfather’s.

BARTON is a guard not a center. Watch all 22 and I bet the play calls are a lot better than you think. What happened to our line. This makes no sense. Baker has no time. He has to constantly fear pressure. Never comfortable. Not saying Baker isn’t at fault too. We need to ship Yaya, vita, and hate to say it but Godwin. Trade down in draft or grab cj carr or manning.
