KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles didn’t seem too thrilled with his offense after yesterday’s joke of a loss to the hapless Browns.
Nor should he.
The constant shorter-than-short passes to running backs, which didn’t do a damn thing other than make sure the Browns got the ball back quickly, really rankled Joe. At one point, Joe took to Twitter to suggest to Bucs offensive coordinator Zac Robinson that the State of Florida has no state statutes forbidding quick slant passes.
A couple of hours later after the game, Bowles seemed to have mind-melded with Joe.
“We can’t commit the penalties,” Bowles began. “We have to have a better ground game early, early in the first half.
“[We] probably have to throw some quicker passes, as well.”
Thank you! That’s just what Joe was getting at on Twitter. Bowles hinted that Cleveland’s defense was doubling Bucs receivers and jamming them, taking away long passes and forcing the Bucs to play dink-and-dunk.
So why didn’t Robinson try some more passes, not deeper, but intermediate? But that would mean scheming up players to get open.

Zac Robinson is still dealing with the mental trauma from his time in ATL…sheesh. At this point bring Gruden back, at least we’d have an offensive minded coach that would show some emotion.

This (and I hope I’m wrong) is only going to get worse- we’ve signed Baker to big money- but our O line is mid to lower tier IMO. Protection yesterday was bad – run blocking most times is bad but I think a lot of both is the offensive scheme from Robinson which I don’t like. We have regressed little by little year after year from our SB win with Brady and now we are here- week 2, losing our home opener to the Browns and now 0-2 – tied for last place with the Falcons already looking up. I think it’s time folks- new GM, New HC, new OC again, New DC- just gut it already so we can get back to where most of us want to get to. Winning football in TB.

When you hear announcers talking about “throwing guys open” in some instances, that takes timing, anticipation, precision, and touch. Which are things we don’t get from the pocket and barely ever have. For ever Green Bay or Seattle game there’s 3-4 games like yesterday in terms of passing performance.
People talking about and blaming the defense this week and last, yet we’ve scored 20 & 19 points in 2 consecutive weeks. No NFL team is winning much scoring that little points. Especially not struggling to score that little points in 60 minutes.

This is why I HATE all of the hype about how great the Bucs look during the preseason. It means nothing. The Bucs have a major coaching problem. Play calling, protection for Baker, lay calling and play calling.

Glazer Mistake 1
Keeping Bowles instead of launching him. Should have happened to keep Coen, and last year he earned a trip to them unemployment line. His game management has single handedly cost this team 9 games out of the last 11. He fired half his defensive staff, only to replace them with the exact same guys. And his unqualified son.

Paying Baker when you didn’t have to. Sounds like this unforced error came from the Glazer sibs.

Rewarding Vea. This guy should have been traded. They could have gotten great value. Instead, they overpaid an aging DT hitting that age where father time catches them. This also sounds less like a Licht decision and more like a directive from the sibs to get this done.

I saw us expand the lead to 10 after driving the length of the field to open the second half. I saw a rookie receiver run 55 yards with a short seam and our linebackers and secondary all whiffed on tackles. I saw a tied game, 16-16 starting the 4th quarter. I saw our kicker give us a 4th quarter lead (again). I saw their offense take 6 minutes off the clock and an uncoordinated TE who hadn’t score an NFL touchdown in 2 years almost fall down on a third and 2 and ramble untouched into the end zone to put use behind by 4. I saw an NFL receiver drop a game winning touchdown pass that hit him in the middle of both of his hands. After our first round pick of a center got flagged for holding.
I believe we’re on the verge of righting this ship. Mayfield and Bowles are going to get this thing turned around. I’m thinking we win 12 of the next 15. If we stay fairly healthy.

Why are we blaming the OC? The plays are there to be made but a special someone can’t read the D pre snap. Every play seems like a surprise to Mayfield.
I could be wrong but the Egbuka TD. Godwin was wide open in the flat for the TD but Baker failed to pull the trigger because he’s confused. Luckily The browns didn’t cover anyone and he was able to get it out to EE. That play was designed to be a “quick” pas to CG in the flat.

We can still save the season if they have enough guts tobench Baker. I don’t mind losing while developing Daniels but every game Baker loses is a wasted game. Stop blaming the OC. He’s trying to call the only pass plays that Baker can complete. Behind the line of scrimmage. Don’t believe me, look at the tape. I have seen Daniels consistently complete those long balls Baker missed yesterday including the last pass to Mek in the end zone. Easy pro qb completion.

Theres Kenton. You mentioned that drop on a contested catch with the DB draped all over Hurst. I mean that wasn’t a wide open drop, a very difficult catch for WRs not named Evans. But no mention on the very next play the 20 yard out of the endzone overthrow by Baker. I mean no chance for the open EE to catch it. You Baker fans are pathetic. Its never his fault, lol.
You better get used to hiding because when this team is 0-4, no excuses can save Baker and Bowles. 2-9 in the last 11 games. The crowd was booing Baker in the 3rd qtr lmao!

The difference and why you can’t compare the two is football knowledge and playing in the system. Brees always knew when to get the ball out and where it had to be. Brees had phenomenal mechanics and he was way more cerebral than Baker Mayfield has ever been. Drew Brees also swore by working out with his QB coach Tom House(for a decade and a half) staying on top of his mechanics well in to the twilight of his career and that’s how he stayed so dangerous as a passer. Go search the internet, use A.I. if you gotta, but Baker hasn’t been tied to a throwing coach since the transition from the ’22 season to ’23 before we picked him up
It’s not just a physical comparison of being short and assuming they’re the same guys playing the position in the same way, Drew Brees put work in to be who he was and Baker is out here winging it.

I’m disgusted with what I watched yesterday. That one HURT. This 0-2 start feels different because there is absolutely no direction.
Missed tackles. No linebackers. No pass rush. Horrendous play calling. Cleveland came into OUR house for Baker’s revenge game, emptied the stadium and embarrassed us in front of everybody. One sack against the Browns with this roster is pathetic.
I don’t care what changes they make. Bowles, coaches, play caller, somebody needs to show some damn urgency.
Look at the Colts they fought until the final whistle last night. We looked lifeless.

Not sure why anyone is surprised! Bowles brought in Robinson to run a ball control offense. In Bowles mind he figured he’d have the defense back playing top 10 football and the offensive line back intact. Problem is neither of those has happened and the Bucs are forced to score points again to even compete. This sounds good on paper, but reality is the offensive line (holding) and the defense (missed tackles) plus poor QB play (Mayfield WTF) equals EMBARASSING loses. The Grim Reaper is already smiling in the halls of one Buc place.

I’ve never said he’s just bad only/just because he’s short but I have explained how his height plays against him. Like needing a 3.5 step drop out of the gun to help his field of vision or when he’s bent at the knees mid throwing motion and throwing from a base that makes him 5’10.
Maybe comparing him to Bryce Young would be more fitting.

The o-line situation is interesting to me because when Brady was here he would rip their A$$ for performing this way. He could careless about being friends or having a beer after work. He was there for ONE objective…..WINNING AND CONTENDING FOR SBs.
The players love Mayfield but I’m starting to wonder if its for all the same reasons they love Bowles. There’s no accountability. Mayfield loves the bravado persona but part of that is you have to walk the walk, not just talk it. The line looks like trash and somebody needs to get a fire lit under these guys. I dont know that Mayfield is willing to cross that line because after work the guys are meeting up for beers and BBQs. That’s the biggest thing i see with this team is we’re content with mediocre, we’re hanging our hat on winning a crappy division and then doing nothing. Great coaches are rarely loved….they are respected but the sense of friendship should not exist while playing. I think these guys love Bowles because he wont bench anyone, there’s no accountability, nobody gets called out and again this is due to Bowles being a former player, he coaches from the players perspective vs the HC….more importantly the fans and organization.

I will be the first to answer. 1) No, he should have been launched. 2) No, he should have had to have earned it this year, 3) Two weeks ago, I would have voted yes, but the big guy is still out of shape and essentially a non-factor besides chewing up $3 million in salary. If he has a big game, he will probably get injured and miss the next 2. So, given his lackluster performance, make it another no.
BTW, healing vibe to Mike Evans while it appears that he made a wise choice ditching Baker, Bowles and Robinson, the injury bug has indeed followed him to San Fran as he exited yesterday’s game with a hip injury. I know some bitter fans will yell karma but man, who in their right mind cannot say that Evans is not missed. He was the one dude who could come down with s9ome acrobatic catches of Baker’s inaccurate throws. Evans could have give the Bucs a chance to win yesterday. Get well Mike. San Fran is a player this year to make a run, the Bucs are only looking at a high draft pick to trade down next April to a qb needy team as Tampa is now tied to Baker for 2 more seasons….. Tough being a Buc fan this morning.

Baker is an OC killer. While some may say he is a king maker (Coen and Canales), he has slayed 8 out of 10. The 2 with success had stacked teams with functioning OLs, amazing WR depth, and a key cog (White) saving Baker’s bacon in blitz pickups and getting actual yardage out of RB desperation dump offs. Baker is our very own Deshaun Watson. Oh wait, Watson had a 122 QBR yesterday to Baker’s 73.

Marine Buc. Of course not. 7-10 looks generous. I’m the crazy one, maybe. But I’ve been around awhile, and I’ve seen some things.
Do I think we’ve fixed the defense? Not yet. But the offense is real close to making up for that. The defense will start looking better when that happens and we’ll be on our way. And I ain’t whistling Dixie.

If you line up 4 WR’s and a TE, they can’t double every receiver. Problem solved.

Hopes on 2027, if you line up that many WRs and a TE, Baker will be on the turf before they can become open due to the poor OL and even if he gets a throw off, his accuracy sucks and he does not have Mike around to make acrobatic catches.

I’m not opposed to blaming Baker, but there is just something off about this entire offense. I’ve seen Baker not see guys when they’re open, but at the same time, the pocket is always collapsing, forcing him to scramble around right off the rip. It’s hard to scan the field efficiently when you’re under duress most of the game.
Sometimes the o-line blocks good, but when they do, Baker either overthrows the receiver, or the receivers drop the ball, like Hurst did when we needed that one at the end. I’m not sure what some people are talking about here though when they say receivers are always wide open, because I’m not seeing that much. What people are calling wide open on here are very tight windows, and Baker seemed to overthrow the ones a lot yesterday that were 50/50 balls at best, but you still gotta give your receivers a chance.
Quick slants allowed Daniel Jones to dice up the Chiefs’ nasty blitz last night. Maybe we should try that since our o-line has been getting kinda cooked. But it seems as though all we had drawn up was screens, and even when we tried to stretch the field, we were forced into quickly dumping the ball off to the checkdown due to the collapsing pocket. Now, I didn’t see a lot of open receivers, so I’m not sure if it’s poor play design, or if it’s the receivers are not getting open in time. Probably a combination of both.
In the end, the Baker overthrow hurt, but the Barton hold kind of put us in a terrible position to begin with, forcing us into bad spot with a 3rd and 14 in the redzone. Baker finally throws an accurate pass, and Hurst drops it.
Like I said, there is just too many things off about this offense with all its mistakes. No one seems to ever be on the same page. When one person does their job, there’s always someone else that isn’t.

As I said when Zac was hired. If his offense sucked with Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts, why would you expect it to be good here. Why?

Please don’t make excuses for Baker. There was at least 3 times our receivers were well ahead of their defender and Baker threw it wayyy too far. I know you like Baker but, please be realistic.. He’s 2-9 in his last 11 games and is playing awfully. He should be benched in favor of Daniels.

You’re just chatting for the sake of chatting, looking for an excuse. Godwin caught everything thrown his way, as did Bucky that was 7 completions for 47 between the two and Godwin had a long of 24 yards on 1 of his 3 catches.
Meaning the other 6 receptions between those 2 players only amounted to 23 yards and Bucky had 1 yard on 4 receptions. Apparently, he’s not as good making guys miss in space as Rachaad was, maybe running the rock behind the OL but for damn sure not as a receiver out of the backfield.
All of Buckys’ receptions he had -22 yards before the catch. Why are those 7 combined completions important? Literally counts for 33% of Bakers completions and I had humps giving me a hard time about pointing out how half of last weeks completions were at or behind the LOS. Same sh** different day.

Also, TV broadcasts don’t even show the whole field so until it’s a replay or an actually diagnosis of a given play in real-time, please Buc fans stop pretending like you know who’s getting separation when cameramen are directed to pan in on the backfield/pocket at the start of a rep. Cut that sh** out we know you’re BSing

We fired an offensive coordinator for a minor slump to get a guy that has less upside and has had troyble getting plays off as well as playcalling issues and turnovers. Zack Robinson is this years hassan reddick so far

I will get a bunch crap for this, but that’s ok. Baker and Trask’s completion % about the same in college. Big difference Trask’s deep ball % was 57%. Could not find one for Baker. Trask 13.4 yds per completion, Baker 9.7. Math tells me that Baker was poor in college in throwing the deep ball as he is now. Trask when in competition with Baker threw fewer interceptions then Baker, but Baker was awarded the job. Trask is 6 feet 5 inches tall and can throw a slant, Baker 6 feet 1/4 inch tall and can’t see over the line of scrimmage which makes it nearly impossible to throw a slant or an accurate deep ball. When Trask was let go Mike Evans said Trask helped him. I read that on this website. I wonder what Mike really meant. Start the rookie, Baker doesn’t have it. How many teams has Baker played for and let go.
