UPDATED: There’s a little clarity now on what’s going on with the Bucs’ No. 2 quarterback and how that affects the Bucs’ first worthless preseason game on Friday night.
Per new Bucs play-by-play man Tony Castricone, speaking on a Buccaneers.com-produced video from the Jets’ home in Florham Park, N.J., Jake Browning “tweaked” his back in a non-contact drill yesterday. He was having a solid camp after a little shaky OTAs this spring.
With Browning nowhere to be seen today at the Jets’ facility, it’s safe to assume he won’t play in Friday night’s worthless preseason game. KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles said after practice Thursday it’s possible, however.
Neither Bowles yesterday nor Castricone today shared specifics about how long Browning might be out of action. Castricone did suggest Browning’s injury shouldn’t be anything major.
“It does not seem like there is great concern that what happened to Jake is going to be a long-term thing,” Castricone said.
Joe guesses if there is good news about this, it’s that Jalon Daniels will get a lot of snaps Friday night as Bowles said yesterday said Mayfield will not play against the Jets. Bowles said backup Connor Bazelak will start if Browning can’t go.
The bad news: if the Bucs hoped to hide undrafted free agent Daniels and try to sneak him through waivers next month when teams cut down to 53 players, that’s out the window with Daniels playing in front of the media capital of the western world. Daniels has enough juice in his game to draw attention.

We have 3 UDFA as backups for our Linebacker of a QB is this the best we can do
