“I Didn’t Have A Reaction”

July 31st, 2026

It’s about ball.

Yesterday, when Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield made statements about how he was disrespected by the Bucs’ contract offers, it lit up #NFLMedia.

How much? Joe was told that SchlockCenter led with Baker Mayfield news. And Joe knows both Jeremy Fowler of ESPN and prickly Pete Prisco of CBS, who were in Tampa for Mayfield interviews, ran with Mayfield’s words immediately.

Social media, including Twitter, went nuts.

But one guy who didn’t get nuts is the same man who irks Bucs fans with his calm public demeanor, Bucs head coach Todd Bowles.

When asked today how he reacted to Mayfield’s words, Bowles calmly said, “I didn’t have a reaction.”

He may have been one of the few inside the walls of One Buc Palace.

Mayfield reiterated during his media sessions yesterday that he would soon shut up about his contract. Joe can say Mayfield is sticking to his conviction.

So Mayfield, as he said yesterday, is all about football now. Bucs football. And so too is Bowles, it seems.

“He had a few things to say and he said it,” Bowles said of Mayfield. “We were all about ball today and we’ve moved on.”

So if Bowles and Mayfield have their way, local media and Bucs fans will have to forget about Mayfield’s contract status and focus on Vita Vea’s hold-in bad back.

ROFLMAO, Todd needs him this year to save his arse BADLY….LOL, but yeah, “no reaction” cant make this up

  2. LouisFriend Says:

Any head coach with common sense isn’t going to weigh in on contract disputes. Bowles is saying the only thing he should say. For all his faults he’s never going to side against his players getting what’s theirs.

  3. 813bucboi Says:

Vita’s deal will get done by the 2nd week in August…Licht has a history of extending/signing players in AUG….

and when he does, you can bet baker will start pouting again lol

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. BuccoMarty Says:

    “I didn’t have a reaction.”

As in “I was as lifeless as the 2025 defensive secondary.”

  5. AquaBum Says:

Good on you coach. We don’t need emotional leaders, we need real leaders that keep a steady calmness for our youth.

Mike wasn’t that guy throwing hissy fits on the sidelines.

    Maybe Lavonte was,

    Baker and Vea surely aren’t

    Chris and Bowles are

  6. George R Says:

VV needs to play out his contract or the Bucs need to trade him. We can get a 2nd round pick for him or get nothing for him after 2026.

  7. SlyPirate Says:

What did you think he was going to say?

“We need to coach it better and we need to play it better.”

I kind of expected that too.

  8. Beeej Says:

Vita has a unique skill set, and no one else on the team possesses it

  9. Guinness8 Says:

Just saw a post by Warren Sharp.
Buc’s have the second most expensive offense behind only the Rams.
    This is without extending Baker.

  10. zzbucs Says:

What would you expect Bowles to say????

There is to much noise already to keep on making it worst.

Bucs don’t owe Mayfield nothing, and if I was on JL position I would wait too.

    Mayfield feels disrespected?????
    I don’t give a damm….. Everybody is so sensitive!!

Their is a paper that says you are under contract and you will get 40mm this year, and you’ve been played 60mm the last 2 years….. That is a contract, and you have to respect a contract, so should VV……

    Crying babys!!!

  11. Lokog Says:

Just wait until baker throws a interception and star losing games because it will happen baker carr is not gonna suddenly become a legendary qb we all lnow what he is amd its not even close

  12. Badbucs Says:

    @ George,
We’ll get a compensatory pick for him if he gets a FA contract. Nothing for Baker.

  13. Megoat13 Says:

At this point I don’t care about any chatter. Let’s play some football, yall want to get paid go out on the field and show it

  14. can-we-get-rid-of-licht-please Says:

I firmly believe that if Vea and Mayfield become free agents after this season that the fanbase (maybe not all of the JBF fanbase) will be happy next year at this time

What did you think he was going to say?

“We need to coach it better and we need to play it better.”

In this context, Sly, it might sound better if he had said (in his usual monotone voice):

“We need to coach it better, we need to play it better, and Jason and Baker need to sign it better.”

    There, fixed it. LOL!

  16. HeartyDickerson Says:

In this case, Bowles being tight lipped is likely the best thing.

But man, in his 7 years here I’ve never heard him say anything interesting, insightful or profound. It’s always the most basic, boring, shallow form of communication.

  17. mj Says:

do you think three years is long enuf to get deep in the playoffs or make it to the sb? maybe bakers not that guy and they are preparing to move on if he doesn’t make it deep this year

  18. larrd Says:

Bowles isn’t going to be able to say or do anything that’s right in the eyes of most fans, because he’s lost them. I worry the same might be true with the players.

  19. Wade Landry Says:

How does the diabolical Philly -Dogs do it …and we can’t construct a 2 year 62M Vita…partial guarantee..Junk yard dog Baker 4 y 200 ..Last year..^of the 4 voided by either side..no strings attached…if disrespect ‘s child is balling out .. looking at should be 65M +…or the other way…. Or F it and blow it up…
