One reason one of the Joe’s is very apprehensive about this coming season for the Bucs is the cornerback position.
Unless you are of the mind Jacob Parrish will move to outside corner, which seems logical despite KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles still talking about Parrish being a nickel corner, Joe thinks the Bucs have a major hole there.
Yeah, Joe would flip Parrish outside. He got a little experience there last year and overall, then-rookie Parrish was one of the Bucs’ best defensive players.
If Parrish stays at nickel, your top two corners are Benjamin Morrison and Zyon McCollum.
But what is Morrison? He didn’t exactly play lights out as a rookie. Joe will always give rookies a pass because — all together now — they are rookies. Rookies play like rookies because they are rookies.
It’s unknown if Morrison can play, when he’s able to play. Jenna Laine of ESPN is beginning to get Jamel Dean vibes about Morrison, listing Morrison as a player to watch when training camp opens Wednesday.
CB Benjamin Morrison: Morrison underwent bilateral hip surgery going into the 2025 draft, and he missed seven games in 2025 because of injuries and was, as coach Todd Bowles put it, “nicked up” with a leg injury during OTAs. Will this be another Jamel Dean situation with constant injuries?
Joe won’t go there yet to be fair to both Morrison and Dean. The thing about Dean is, he could play. Sure he got hurt a lot but the guy could ball. He was, if you remember, a starting corner on a Super Bowl winner.
The way things are going in Morrison’s very short career, he is outperforming Dean with his time in the tub.

Our safeties are pretty solid – B grade.
Our CBs have a lot to prove – D grade.

It’s sad that a 3rd round pick second year player is our best CB.

A few draft scouts had Morrison as a first round talent, but knocked him for his injury history. I HOPE Morrison can stay healthy and adjust to the NFL. He needs a full, healthy camp under his belt to become a starter.

We all know the weak spot is CB. Burrow will torched them in the opener. Trade or signing an available experienced CB is a must at this point. Bad drafting and shortsightedness is a yearflaw of JL. If he doesn’t address this flaw he will be gone as will TB. This a prove it year for both. Not addressing this obvious weakness is not a good way to begin training camp. No confidence in Morrison at all.

Can Keionte Scott play on the outside? I know he is better suited for Nickel, but going to have to get him ready for there. That way when McCollum gets bored and Morrison gets hurt, we aren’t hung out to dry.

Well Joe, I have been critical of the CB position for awhile. Presently, I don’t see Morrison or McColumn as starters. Yes we can give Morrison a pass. However, we don’t know if he can play the position much less replace Dean. I admit I was critical of Dean as he was often off the field. However there is no doubt the Bucs were better when he was on the field. Then there is McColumn, he may be worse than Morrison. I mean last year he was simply a huge libility on the field. Yet we start the year with him as the starter. I truly don’t get it. Bowles and Licht to me are stating well we are rebuilding and the CB position will have to wait. I mean everyone talks about Bowles being on the hot seat and he wants to start Morrison and McColumn. It makes little since other than they know the CB position will be weak this year. I really believe they need to go out and get a real CB to play the position. In my opinion both Morrison and McColumn are on the bench or play in a reserve role until they prove otherwise. However, presently it appears one or both will start. To make matters even worse their is no depth behind them. Yes they added a couple of CB’s , who have no experience. I can’t wait to hear Bowles explain Morrison and McColumn’s play as receivers run open in the backfield again this year. Yes the CB position is a huge libility right now

I really like his potential, and would be awesome if he can play multiple roles if needed. I worry a little about his smaller frame when playing on the outside, but we shall see.

Parrish and McCollum will be the starting outside CBs this year. Scott starts at Nickle CB – which is exactly what he was drafted for…..
Bucs have 4 CBs who are talented enough to start in the NFL – which is better than a # of other teams have….. But after those 4, the talent level falls off a cliff.
Although there has been some talk of how well UDFA rookie Ayden Garnes is playing thus far…..

Jeff Okuda and Tre White still out there among others. Rasul already signed. JL has no clue how much depth we lack at CB and Ilb or he would have made moves earlier in FA. He’s as inept as Bowles. He’s got the cap maxed with mediocre talent. He got us a super bowl then got lazy.

Often times red flags are over looked. Morrison could not stay healthy at Notre Dame. Why would you draft him? Durability and ethics should be knock outs.

Not sure how you can evaluate CB or S when a team cannot get a pass rush. Add in ILB that can’t cover….
Bain and Anzalone better stay healthy all year or 2026 will look like 2025.
Also, fingers crossed David Walker can play and stay healthy.

How bad is the Bucs CB room?
Well, the guy being called a loaf, injury prone, and going MIA in games, was still our best CB by a wide stretch.
Now we have a guy that gets bored while earning top pay, and a guy that can’t stay on the field who gets outmatched regularly.
And no reinforcements from the GM. Could be a long 2026 season.

I cannot remember a year when the Bucs didn’t have one or both of their starting cornerbacks injured at some point in the season. The problem at corner is depth. We need three, preferably four corners who can start.

Our Dline rush was awful last year. Not to give an excuse but both positions can benefit or degrade one another. Last year CB play might have been better if the Bucs were able to generate more of a pass rush from the front four.

Where does Scott fit in, and why hasn’t a veteran CB been signed, or plans to sign one soon. Morrison doesn’t appear to be the answer, which is obvious to everyone.

If @SB~LV is talking about Will Johnson, drafted a few spots ahead of BMo, then I’m not sure what he’s on about because they’re in the same position. Many of the corners in that draft got banged up and their numbers are similar. BMo is the one we can forgive most because he missed his senior season so was always a long term project. And how could we not give Licht the benefit of the doubt since he drafted the best rookie corner of the class in THE THIRD ROUND???

Dean made it abundantly clear he wanted no part of the Bucs. He played well enough when he had to just to be on the radar of other teams. He had his constant injuries, loafed on pursuits, often played way too far off his man, he didn’t care. If he were still on the team, he would be even worse. Let’s not make him something better than what he was. The Bucs are better without him.

I like Scott during his playoff run with the U. He and Parrish have some dawg in them.
I dont see the same in ZM and Benmo. When Bowles said you played poorly because you were bored….. come on. That should have warranted a vet fa as insurance. If ZM and Benmo start week one, look out because Chase and Higgins will cook those two.
I cringe thinking those two covering Chase and Higgins.

I have very little hope for B-Mo. By season start it will be Zyon and Parrish at Corner and Scott at Nickel. This is a good setup but if either gets hurt were in trouble and don’t have the talent at backup. Licht don’t do what you did in 2024 with UDFA’s as our only backups. NO MORE FUNDERBURK. Get the team another CB before season start
