Dave Canales Punts When Asked To Compare Liam Coen Offense To His

November 29th, 2024

Dave Canales, the 2023 Bucs offensive coordinator and now the Panthers’ head coach, is known for in-depth news conferences and an eagerness to talk about anything football with passion and candor.

So Joe was surprised when Canales punted on a Bucs question this week as his team prepares to play Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Canales told local media in Charlotte that Todd Bowles has a sophisticated Bucs defense with a unique gameplan for each opponent, so the Panthers won’t focus their preparation on Canales’ inside knowledge of Bowles’ schemes.

Then Canales offered an unsolicited take on the Bucs offense.

“Liam Coen’s doing a great job with Baker and the whole group, and just mixing up the different things that they do — under center, in the gun, a lot of variety,” Canales said. “A really cool offense to watch, you know, as we watch a lot of crossover tape. So there’s a bunch of good stuff coming out of Tampa.”

Nice share by Canales, but then he was asked the obvious question of the Bucs offense, “What are they doing differently than what you did?”

Canales didn’t bite. He passed on comparing the Bucs offenses of the past two seasons.

“I don’t really want to get into specifics of the scheme,” he said.

This season, the Bucs average a touchdown more per game than Canales’ unit did in 2023.

    Dave’s response……Like a cow looking at a new gate 😂😂

  2. Mac Says:

Motion is a big part of it for sure. Bucs use it a lot helping Bake read what kind of defense scheme they are in.

Side question. Can the Bucs franchise tag Godwin at seasons end or is he a unrestricted free agent?

  3. GoneGator Says:

Not sure how this is a “story”. Predictable answer to the question.

  4. David Says:

Of course he didn’t answer that, it’s night and day compared to the garbage he put on the field. And in all fairness to him, it’s a pretty stupid question for a reporter to ask and actually expect an answer

Any impending unrestricted free agent is eligible to receive a team’s franchise tag.

    @Mac

Yes, Godwin can be tagged again. However, he’s already had the franchise tag placed on him once in 2021. If the Bucs did so again, by NFL/Union agreement they’ll be required to pay him 120% of his previous salary. That’s a lot considering the cap space they already have allocated elsewhere for next season.

watching Raiders game–they have 2 good players Crosby on the D-line and Brock Bowers offense. Their run game reminds me of the Bucs run game for the last few years. We are better now and that is a big deal. #Bucky

  8. Pewter Power Says:

Huge difference Canales had no clue how to use Chris Godwin.

  9. lewl Says:

Godwin has played under the tag once and the Bucs tagged him a second time (though he signed a new contract and didn’t play on the second tag). He can definitely be tagged (a player can be tagged 3 times), the question is does it count as the second tag (120% pay rise on his 2024 salary) or the third (144% pay rise). I think it should count as the second, but not sure.

  10. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Canales strikes me as one of those guys who make a better HC than a coordinator. Some guys can’t translate success as a coordinator into that for the whole team. Bowles is an example of the latter according to a lot of the retired GMs who frequent JBF.

  11. NJbucs23 Says:

    Because canales is a fraud.

  12. Stanglassman Says:

I believe that 2nd franchise tag on Godwin would have to be consecutive. Like if they didn’t get the deal done with Winfield jr and tagged him again this year.
I don’t know if tagging CG would be needed or even worth it. ‘25 WR FT will be over 25m. He should sign much more cap friendly, one year contract rehab deal then if he has returned to form by the end of the season get his muti-year big contract.

No, it’s overall during a player’s career. A player can receive the tag only 3 times total.

Canales is very aware of the fact that the Bucs have the better Defense. The game will be a chess game of Offenses, his and Tampa Bay’s. I know who I’m rooting for!
