SI.com: Kyle Trask No. 21 Backup

May 30th, 2024

Ranked.

Hey, at least he’s better than Marcus Mariota.

When trying to judge Kyle Trask as a backup, there is scant data to work with. It’s far more of a guessing game. Joe doubts any quarterback can remotely be judged correctly on 10 pass attempts.

So this was Gilberto Manzano’s dillema when trying to rank all of the NFL’s backup quarterbacks for SI.com.

As a result, Manzano has Trask as the No. 21 backup.

21. Kyle Trask, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (18)
The Buccaneers named Baker Mayfield the starter over Trask last summer and didn’t look back en route to another NFC South title. Trask, the 2021 second-round pick, is a bit of a mystery, but it might say something that the team considered starting him a year ago.

Last year Manzano had Trask ranked at No. 18.

As long Baker Mayfield stays healthy, Trask, who is in the final year of his contract, will continue to be a mystery.

And does any Bucs fan really want to see Trask? That would mean Mayfield is hurt (or the Bucs are in a blowout). Hey, so long as the blowout comes when the Bucs are up 30 on someone.

Come on Joe, you’re just asking for it now with that last question. Of course we would love to see Trask! How many podcasts have you guys done where you complain how Tampa has never drafted a qb and signed him to a second deal, that he’s “The Guy”? I’ve moved on from believing Trask will be our Guy, and I’m supporting Baker, but of course I’d love to see my 2nd favorite Gators Qb the leader of my favorite NFL team. I will never wish an injury on anyone, and hope it’s a blowout.

  2. bob in valrico Says:

Insufficient data equals flawed analysis from backup analyst. Baker put together
a fine season considering an offensive coordinator whose predictable, unsuccessful blocking scheme failed to provide a complementary running attack
for much of the season. That said the Bucs should not pass up a chance to evaluate Trask in the right situation.

  3. heyjude Says:

Baker is our number one quarterback.

Agreed, if we are up 30+ or Baker is badly injured, put Trask in. But it has to be 30+ in the last ten minutes of the 4th quarter. All this time the Bucs coaches know something we don’t and haven’t allowed Trask to really play. Which makes these stats erroneous since SI really don’t know either. However, at least he isn’t at the bottom of the list.

  4. Joe in Michigan Says:

If the Bucs are up by 30 late in the game and they put Trask in, he’ll probably just be handing the ball off to a RB. Probably not much to see.

  5. WiseCrack Says:

No Tampa fan in their right mind would want a QB we drafted to start and earn a second contract. We would much rather have low-end journey men or GOATs.

JTS/WillyG > BM when it comes to impact by position.

Simply put, even JW3 could get us to the Playoffs with the D Todd has produced for us. Not a JW endorsement.

Balance and Perspective matter BUT context is important too. Trask clearly has talent worth exploring. Whereas Baker is what he is. An excellent emergency QB when you are in fear for your job.

  6. heyjude Says:

That is true, Joe in Michigan. Wouldn’t be much to see, just being careful.

  7. Beeej Says:

Gabbert got a lot of garbage time, usually looked good. When he actually STARTED a game for KC, looked like the guy we remember.

  8. SB~LV Says:

    Gibberish
Absolutely no way to rank his career because he has done nothing!
I hate this part of the year and am pissed at myself for clicking and even more pissed for responding.

  9. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Jose’s beer tab has gotten a bit high. Time to do a Trask post.

  10. Brandon Jeff Says:

The Bucs Brass are playing this pretty smart by not allowing Trask to put out any game tape. This way they don’t lose him to free agency and can sign him to a relatively cheap second contract. Trask will be ready to step in when Baker is injured, fails or leaves. Btw, I’m not wishing anything bad on Baker. I think he has done a remarkable job under horrible circumstances. Just not sure yet if his play is sustainable.

  11. DBS Says:

Pretty sad when you come here and say JW could get us to the playoffs with Todd and his defense. Todd was here JW even had Bruce to help and couldn’t get us to the playoffs. He goes to the Saints and they let him go too. Are you serious?

  12. Brandon Jeff Says:

The bucs are playing it pretty smart, not allowing task to put up any game tape. This way they don’t lose him to free agency and stand a much better chance of signing him to a relatively cheap second contract. Trask will be ready to step in whenever Baker Gets injured, fails or leaves. BTW, I’m not wishing anything bad on Baker. I think he has done a remarkable job under horrible circumstances. I just don’t know if his play is sustainable.

  13. Brandon Jeff Says:

    Test

  14. WiseCrack Says:

DBS: You would have to be a lifelong diehard fan to understand.

JW while certainly not my choice for the man of the year award. Was exciting and fun to watch. He had BA and TB for one year. A year in which the D was coming off a HISTORICLLY bad run of years. The lost decade was more to do with the team as a whole and not JW.

But you won’t understand no matter how detailed of an explanation is given. Baker is your personal favorite regardless. I get it and that is ok. I am ok with Baker our QB. But is he better than JW talent wise. Hands down that is a NO.

Baker has Moxie and Moxie goes a long way towards blinding people when doing an objective review.

Here I will say it another way, so you are less triggered about your guy getting compared to JW.

Shawn King, Chris Simms, Brad Johnson (Trent Dilfer) could win with the D that Todd is putting on the field the last 4 years.

Lets hope that continues for Bakers sake. Also, lets hope he has more games like Green Bay and the playoffs vs more games like, oh IDK, the rest of the season.

  15. DBS Says:

Right now the only people that know what Trask is on the NFL level are those that work with him Everyone else is speculating and guessing. College is not the NFL. His head cheerleader cries he can’t play with those UPS drivers Used car salesman. He has to have the startes. None of us really know what he is or is not.

  17. DBS Says:

WiseCrack. I have been here since the day the started Nothing you can tell me about this franchise I don’t already know. He was a lost cause from the start.fun to watch does not win championship. He was a turnover machine.

  18. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Within the division:
    Bucs have Trask at backup
Falcons have Penix , at least to start the season
    Panthers have Andy Dalton
Saints have Taysom Hill/ Spencer Rattler
Falcons may have better option at backup but Trask compares well to the other teams’ backups, especially Saints

  19. Lt. Dan Says:

Snarky post Jack Burton Mercer. Classy post @davidp67.

  20. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Wisecracking says r u dumb that wasn’t even a good wisecracking excellent emergency qb what a dumb contradiction that statement was sounds like u r highly intelligent in moron content

  21. Ol' Boy Says:

The end of Trasks contract and the subsequent showing him the door, cannot come soon enough imo. Not sure what Joe will do with himself at that point, with nothing thought provoking or insightful to write about our qb’s room. But hey, there’s always the water boy…
Assuming we pick 32nd in the draft next year, who will be our diamond in the rough pick?

  22. My Momma Says:

There was a very telling scene in a Buc produced video from training camp last year between Mike Evans and Trask. Evans was walking off the field while Trask was trying to explain to him what he was trying to do during a scrimmage. Evans just walked off and turned his back on him while Kyle while trying to talk with him. Watch how Trask speaks. He doesn’t come off having a lot of confidence. Now compare him to Mayfield’s bravado. I think between Kyle’s inability to win his teammates over had more to do with the signing of Mayfield last year and plus he needed some more instruction after having been third string all this time. Also with Mayfield’s ability to scramble and game experience and motivational abilities is what made him attractive to the Bucs.
I don’t think you can judge Trask for not beating out Gabbert while Brady was here. Why would you have an inexperienced quarterback backing up Brady who needed a second set of eyes during games? We all saw the exchanges between Brady and Gabbert. Kyle would have been of little use and would have frustrated Brady. It just wasn’t part of the plan.

    Watch how
Clyde Christiansen and others said that Kyle didn’t get much during Brady years.

  23. My Momma Says:

Look how Clyde Christensen and others said the Kyle didn’t get much attention during the Brady years. If they didn’t have any confidence in them they wouldn’t have put him as the backup. I believe he may be part of a long-term plan or at least an insurance plan. This year will be very very telling.

  24. Bucs Fan since 1996 Says:

If SI.com was being honest they would have wrote “we have no F’ing idea as to where Trask ranks among NFL backup QBs”.

  25. 1sparkybuc Says:

Mayfield would play with two broken legs before he would allow Trask to play with the starters. The three FGs we scored against Carolina is clear proof of that. Has any other team in the league ever gone anywhere near 50 years without signing a QB that they drafted to a second contract? That’s just embarrassing. What we do have is the league record of QBs we got rid of winning SBs for other teams. Just once I would like to see the Bucs have success with a QB that we drafted.

I fully expect some other team to benefit from what Trask has learned in Tampa. I also believe Mayfield will get the Bucs in the playoffs year after year. I don’t believe he is consistent enough to beat the elite teams.

  26. Dave Pear Says:

That’s pretty high praise for a guy that coaches, management, ownership and players have all evaluated and played with every day for three years and determined that a one legged one armed Baker gives them a better chance to win than #2.

Cue Doc the Kok to come in and say that the two (2) JBF posts from August last year, where Joe opined that maybe #2 played a little better than Mayfield, is proof that #2 won the job, therefore there is a conspiracy to punish the better player and make the team worse by playing a lesser player. I mean, all the proof anyone needs, right?

Can’t make it up, there it is in black and white.

DIFFERENT MEMORY OF LAST YEAR …

I remember Trask looking great in the preseason. I also remember, the Bucs were discussing benching Baker after going 1-6. Baker would have been benched if the Bucs had lost to CAR on 12/3.

    MY CONSPIRACY THEORY …

Bucs are going to resign Trask to a 4-year backup contract ($7-$8M) after this season, give him 2 years with Coen, and make him the starter in 2026. They’ll have so much cap to invest in a solid supporting staff.

  29. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Sorry Dan, that is all I got this far before the season. Offseason exhaustion has already kicked in. However, since Jose Fanatico de Los Bucaneros is one of my few respites in this desert, I agree that I should be more respectful. Jose, you have my permission to delete my previous comment.

I knew an actual Lt Dan once. But I think he’s a colonel in the reserves these days.

  30. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Another publication had Baker listed about the same place amongst the starting QBs.

    Whatever.

Until Trask gets some meaningful snaps, who knows?

Guess would be a Brad Johnson type potential.

Have always said, with a starting QB, it takes about a season and a half of regular starts to find out what you have.

Trask may get some opportunities this season.

    Will see

  31. Robbie Says:

The reality check is coming this season!! Not a fair analysis.

  32. Bobby M. Says:

Trask has had 3 different coordinators in 4 yrs…..absolute formula to stunt any young QBs development. He was a terrible pick by Licht, should have got a player they could get on the field with Brady.

  33. ChiBuc Says:

Heyjude: “put Trask in. But it has to be 30+ in the last ten minutes of the 4th quarter”

If you gotta wait until the last 10 minutes when up 30+ to put in your backup QB, to protect #1, I think that is more of an indictment on your defense than #2 QB

  34. Buchen61 Says:

All you demanding that Trask should be the starter are beyond hope. There is zero rational in wanting to start a former 2nd round pick who’s thrown 10 passes in 4 years. Seriously something isn’t right with you people. Baker performed at elite levels in high school college and the NFL but somehow Trask gives us the better shot at the Superbowl. Give me a break

  35. JD Still Says:

I have no interest in where Kyle is ranked at as a backup, that is incredibly ignorant when we have never had the opportunity to see how he does as a starter, and that is incredibly stupid.

  36. Dave Pear Says:

#2 <<< Mike Glennon’s special needs brother. If Glennon had a brother.

  37. Mike Johnson Says:

trask will get his shot this year. Will he be ready? We shall see.

  38. Dave Pear Says:

#2 is ready….to start his career as a spokesperson for the Giraffe Preservation Society.

  39. Shane Callahan Says:

Totally unfair to Trask. All anyone knows is that he’s not better than Brady or Mayfield. Period.

  40. Doug Says:

We haven’t seen much of Trask, but I am sure the coaches have seen enough.

Football games are about 40 passing attempts per game. Yes, it’s great to see those attempts against another team’s defense, but I would rather gauge on the dozens and dozens of passes in practice, than the 5 or 10 he might have in garbage time, against backups. Neither team is expected to be trying in a 30 point blowout in the last 10 minutes of a game, so there’s nothing to see there, either.

If Trask is made the QB for a game and can practice for it, then we’ll see what he has. Otherwise, let’s hope he isn’t needed. If he is, let’s hope he is ready.

  41. Oneilbuc Says:

Trask was better than Baker last year in training camp and we got the proof. Baker was gifted the starting job and every one knows it . IRA said his sorce told him that Baker will be the starter week 1 and that’s when Baker had 9 picks to Kyle Trask 1 . That was a business decision because they knew you guys would fall for the narrative. That’s why all you Baker fan boys do is make up a bunch of excuses for Baker. Baker can throw 5 picks and y’all would blame everyone but him. But it’s no excuse this year NFC championship or bust !!!

  42. Oneilbuc Says:

Buc61. Baker ain’t winning no Superbowl with the bucs lol 🤣 . You really believe that Baker is a superbowl quarterback oh that’s why he’s on his 4th team lol 😅😅 . Man y’all kill me with this Baker Mayfield and superbowl talk lol 🤣🤣 . Neither one of them will help us win a superbowl by October we probably will be talking about the draft. Lol 🤣🤣

  43. JK Says:

WiseCrack……….anyone could win with that D??

    Was “that D”…….that good??

That’s not what I saw. Houston game anyone?

FFS the same peeps who were wrong about Mayfield last year are doubling down on their ignorance

In year 2, healthy, Mayfield is gonna BALL

  44. garro Says:

Gilberto Manzano = Poor Poor man = Needs help

Anyone wonder why SI is going down the tubes?…only read the headline!

Rating some folks who have not or have barely seen the field, and were ahem …second string?

    Why???

    Geez!

    Go Bucs!

  45. garro Says:

BTW Please don’t feed the trolls.

    That is all

    Go Bucs!

  46. Dave Pear Says:

    #2 is Trashk.
