“The Other Teams Out There Didn’t Want Him”

March 18th, 2024

It’s nearing the one-year anniversary of Bucs head coach Todd Bowles calling Baker Mayfield “a natural born leader.”

The Bucs value that trait in a huge way.

But not every team does, and that’s one reason Mayfield is playing for Tampa Bay for a modest contract significantly less money than the franchise tag value for quarterbacks.

NBC Sports guru and ProFootballTalk.com founder Mike Florio hammered home that point last week on Pro Football Talk with co-host Chris Simms, the former Bucs QB.

“Tampa Bay puts a value on that,” Florio said of Mayfield’s leadership and magnetism with teammates. “Other teams apparently didn’t. Tampa Bay did. And that makes it even more of a bargain for the Buccaneers — to pay $33 million a year on a three-year deal for a guy who comes in and plays the position at the high level and is one of the best, current natural leaders at the quarterback position in football.”

Florio said he had been tapping sources to sniff out Mayfield’s free agency market as a starting quarterback and came up empty.

“This works out perfectly for the Buccaneers because for the second straight year, the other teams out there didn’t want him,” Florio said. They want somebody younger. [Baker] is only 28. They want somebody younger.”

Joe is so pleased the Bucs won the wager they made on Mayfield. Yeah, lots of fans and media scream for a first-round draft pick of a quarterback. But only 14 NFL teams have a quarterback they drafted in Round 1 on their roster and that number will be 13 when Zach Wilson is traded soon.

There’s no arguing that it’s extraordinarily difficult to draft and devlelop a first-round QB successfully.

  1. Allen Lofton Says:

So, the Bucs are the winner. They have a quality Quarterback at a reasonable price and the money to pay for quality players around him to make a Superbowl win for the next decade.

  2. BakerFan Says:

So next article out there will be how a few teams really wanted him put out by the Mayfield side. These guys have to write something to be paid and look relevant. I am over it, time to move on and see if this team can compete with the big boys. This upcoming schedule could be really tough.

  3. David Says:

I don’t know if they “did not want him” I just think it is a quarterback heavy draft so a lot of the teams that need a QB see the draft as the way to go, plus it is cheaper. It would’ve been a great year for the Buccaneers to draft a younger guy, but not sure if LVD and Evans are back if they did go that route.

I am glad they stuck with Baker after watching him all year. Like it says in the article, he’s only 28. Stay healthy and he could be on top of his game until he’s 35.

  4. J Marzullo Says:

Why would teams be tripping over themselves to sign a career .500 quarterback who throws picks when playoff games are on the line?

  5. Shane Callahan Says:

The top first round QBs typically go to struggling organizations. Very few can turn them around like Baker did the Browns. They did him wrong. He then goes to an even worse organization in Carolina , but he couldn’t pull off another miracle. Now he’s with a good organization who was missing a lot of pieces last year. Let’s hope they get this stud QB what he needs so that he can finally succeed in the way that he’s capable of. Go Bucs!

  6. Bucem19 Says:

@J Marzullo I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thank you for saying what needed to be said.

  7. Alexandre Nascimento Says:

Hey, Joe, any chance the Bucs trade for Josh Allen (Jags)? Will he be a guy you be happy with?
Not that I heard anything that he is being chopped, but you’ll never know if you never ask.
PS: I do not remember anybody saying JPP was avaiable back in 2018…

  8. Boss Says:

YEAH! we got a guy no one else wanted!

and the bucs did it for the low, low price of 100 million dollars.

  9. It's Corn Says:

Rich Gannon won the NFL MVP at age 36, on his fourth team. You don’t always have to draft your franchise QB yourself.

  10. CleanHouse Says:

Believe Mayfield was 1 overall, Joe. Does that count for something?

  11. Truth be Told Says:

I said it before and I’ll say it now we lucked out getting Baker. Go Bucs pass rush- pass rush. pass rush

  12. TonyD Says:

It is especially difficult to develop QBs(& other players) in today’s NFL when there is such a high expectation for the player to excel and win right away .

  13. Shane Callahan Says:

Good point! Not only was he the #1 pick and Heisman winner, but SI said he was the best college QB since 2000. He’s simply not been given the opportunity to truly succeed no matter how hard he’s tried as an individual in a team game. Licht was cash-strapped last year because of the GOAT. Gosh, I hope this TEAM succeeds. Finally, Baker haters=football morons. 😄

  14. Tony Marks Says:

Other outlets and writers have reported the exact opposite. They report he was wanted by the Pats, atlanta , raiders and vikings. Maybe even Denver and steelers. It was always held as a given Baker was returning to the Bucs so the options were never pursued and he was gone by free agency ,

We will never know and at this point its only fodder for the haters to soothe themselves because regardless their QB 1 for the foreseeable future is Baker Mayfield.

  15. Shane Callahan Says:

Baker bonus points: He was a walk on at Texas Tech and again at OU. If he leads your Bucs to a Super Bowl, they’ll make a movie about this dude so many of you hate for no legitimate reason whatsoever. 😄

  16. JimBobBuc Says:

I think Atlanta wanted Baker, they pulled the trigger on Cousins, a much older player, right after the Bucs signed Baker.

  17. Dave Pear Says:

    Boss makes everyone look smarter.

  18. Capt. Tim Says:

    J marsduh,
So tired of the absolutely fools that post here.
A QB who is in the top ten in Yardage, completion percentage, and TDs.
Wins the division with the worst ranked rushing offense and Te production
( First time in NFL HISTORY a team managed that!). Beats the defending NFC champs in the playoffs. And is Probowl MVP.
    Hes An ELITE, FRANCHISE QB.
    Those are the Facts.
And I dont care if the AIRHEADS ON BSPN OR NFL NETWORK THINK SO.
And I dont care WHAT SOME ABSOLUTE SIMPLETONS POSTING HERE THINK.
Ive been watching QBs my entire life.
This kid is special. He will win a SuperBowl here. Thats what I know to be true. And Im exceptionally smart. Smarter than all the Network talking heads combined. The think theres 10 teams in the league!
Mayfield is going to be a great QB.
And we got him for nothing.
And the intelligent fans in Tampa are overjoyed!

  19. Shane Callahan Says:

Trask is taller and bigger. He would undoubtedly be starting if he was better than Baker. Get over it already!

    ^^^^^^^^
YOUR team wanted Baker. You are a Bucs fan, right?

How did Kirk Cousins get $180 million on his new deal? How did Derek Carr get $150 mil? How much did Watson get? Wilson?

  21. Let Em Bake Says:

If nobody wanted him, why the rush to sign before free agency? Doesn’t add up.
Simply let Baker hit free agency, then when no offers materialize, Bucs have all leverage…but that didn’t happen…

  22. Jon Says:

For all you bucs fans whining…remember, this guy was drafted #1 overall, and I know a team that would have loved ti have him back last year. That team is also spending 240 million on a guy that played 6 games and still doesn’t look like 240 million in those 6

  23. Aceofaerospace Says:

Joe, please save me having to look it up, how many starting quarterbacks are 1st round selections?

  24. Shane Callahan Says:

Let Em Bake: Baker did this for Evans and his team. He wants to WIN! He’s a winner who has spent his entire career on terrible to mediocre teams. I’m hoping the interior o-line and running game GREATLY improve. I’m also hoping the defense can get back into the upper half of the league. I like the roster moves I’ve seen thus far. I’m hoping we land some real studs in the draft. Bucs fans are lucky they had Baker last year, or they would’ve performed as badly as the experts said they would. Go Bucs!!!

  25. BakerBucs says Says:

Well well I will say I for 1 believe that Atlanta did not sign cousins until Tampa signed Baker cause they wud have tried to sign him had he reached FA so this article is BS look at all the teams that took lesser quality QB after Baker signed & he took less cash to help this team sign the rest of the top tier needs.some stuff is fake news on a daily deal it’s as bad as the garbage bout trump daily. how’s that blue freak working out in the white house where’s the ice cream what a loser

  26. BakerBucs says Says:

It’s just like they were saying nobody wanted Fields then Steelers sign him now they say 6 teams were inquiring bout fields, this site is pretty bogus many times a week

  27. Obvious Says:

It’s CRAZY how All these other GM’s and Head coaches in the world don’t see it like so few do here, OR, actually, where ever you are from because most of you aren’t actual Buccaneer fans that have been talking up Baker as if he’s the second coming…

As an “actual” life long fan myself, I believe he earned another shot at it by the skin of his teeth in the playoffs and a game or two somewhere in there, he Actually looked like a QB.

Before then, he was quite pathetic with the trademark 50 per first half! And I wasn’t sure I wanted him wasting my Bucs time any further. But I’m ok with the limited deal he got with the get the H**L out of dodge clause if he blows it. I “believe” he CAN DO IT! I believe he can redeem himself. A FLASH IN THE PAN ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH but I’m glad we gave him another shot at making his life and career more than just a running joke.

I like the chip on his shoulder. AND HE D**M WELL BETTER STILL HAVE THAT CHIP AND IS NOT OK WITH THE LITTLE CONTRACT HE GOT! I REALLY HOPE HE WANTS IT ALL AND WILL PROVE THE REST OF THE DOUBTERS WRONG ONCE AND FOR ALL!

You got your shot young man. MAKE IT COUNT!

    Good luck to us all…

  28. BakerBucs says Says:

OMG I don’t drink but either someone else took Davids post name or I am drunk with that post I just read where is Wyoming joe when u need him?

  29. Shane Callahan Says:

Baker is the only QB in the history of the NFL that could lead a team to a playoff victory with the center and guards he had. I still have hopes that Mauch can turn into a good guard. The two backup guards they signed from the Eagles and Giants are already upgrades from what we had last year, but I’m still not convinced. We need to draft the best Center available with our first pick. Unlike “fans” on this site who scream nonsense, I realize that as only a former HS football player and coach, I admit that I don’t know as much as NFL employees. I’m just hoping Licht and company keep impressing me now that they have a little money to spend.

  30. BakerBucs says Says:

Bakerfan say see if this team can compete with the big boys am I wrong or didn’t we compete with them last year.i for 1 did not think we had an easy schulue last year we played pretty much all the top teams in the NFC division,bills,KC,lions,GB,jags,9er’s aren’t they top tier I c this season we pretty much similar schedule

  31. Shane Callahan Says:

Joe, please save me having to look it up, how many starting quarterbacks are 1st round selections?
    ^^^^^^
The QB’s who will probably be starting in 2024 who weren’t 1st Rounders: Prescott (4th), Geno Smith (2nd), Cousins (4th), Hurts (2nd), Wilson (3rd), and Levis (2nd). There might be a few more, depending on what Vegas, Wash, etc. do.

Or did you mean 1st overall picks that are starting QB’s?

  33. Joe in Michigan Says:

First overall selections starting: Stafford, Lawrence, Burrow, Goff, MAYFIELD, Murray, Young, probably Caleb Williams to Da Bears.

  34. Joe in Michigan Says:

    And/or anyone I missed.

  35. Arn Platz Says:

Quality starter and a good backup, Bucs are in a prime position for success

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Kirk Cousins 4 year $180 mil with 5100 mil guaranteed…

So….you are telling me that Atlanta had no interest in Mayfield…..$100 mil 3 years and 28 years old?

Plus taking him away from a division rival.

That makes the Falcons look like complete fools…

  37. Beeej Says:

You can add Las Vegas and San Francisco to that first group

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The last time I checked 28 is younger than 35 (Cousins)

  39. Defense Rules Says:

I was hoping that once Baker was re-signed, this BS would be over & done with … but NOOOOO. Joe & so many others continue to dwell on the irrelevant.

This is 2024 folks, not 2017 when Baker won the Heisman, or 2018 when he was the 1st pick in the draft, or any other year previous to this. It’s a new year & there’s LOTS of football to talk about beyond ‘Poor Baker only made $100 mil’ or ‘Baker haters are idiots’.

All that crappola’s done. The contract is signed & Baker’s who we got. If he succeeds, Bucs succeed. If he flops, Bucs flop. And guess what … the vast majority of those who are on the Baker Express right now will be calling for his head, and saying ‘See, we told ya so’.

It’s the TEAM around Mayfield that’ll make or break the Bucs. And make or break Baker. He’s already shown that he’s good enough to take us to the playoffs. And he’s already shown IMO that he’s not good enough to put any old team on his back & will them to the Super Bowl. No QB is BTW, not even Brady or Mahomes. Can we please stop beating the dead horse & start talking some real football?

  40. heyjude Says:

I really think there were other teams that wanted Baker. In the end, we are lucky to have him. I agree that many first round QB picks don’t work out. Be it they are drafted into the wrong team, ownership, wrong coaches, the new environment, unable to transition quickly from college to NFL, and other reasons. I remember on draft night 2015 celebrating that we got Jameis, first pick. So many high hopes for him. He was good for awhile.

  41. Bucs Reality Show Says:

Capt Tim…. I mentioned this in the previous post.

To all the haters out there. Go to YouTube and watch the recap of the Texas Tech vs Oklahoma game a few years back. A classic.

Mahomes had a historic day, and yet, Baker was better.

Deep in your hearts you know Baker will be MVP and SB champion. You fear him, why?

  42. SlyPirate Says:

More super meaningful Baker stories. Awesome!

    Here are some ideas …
    1. What have the other NFCS teams accomplished this off season
    2. Review Kirk’s injury and when he’s expected to play
    3. Wirfs and Winfield contract updates
    4. Anyone working out at One Buc already
    5. People compare CK to Aaron Donald and Yaya to JPP. How did those players fare in year 2?

  43. BUCman Says:

They didn’t want him because he really never was available. Everyone new he was engaged to be married to the Bucs. If he was truly “single” he would have had many teams courting him.

  51. Rod Munch Says:

Teams didn’t want him because of his record, and his inconsistency.

If he can become more consistent – then the Bucs have a good deal.

If he can’t, or takes a step backwards, then everyone will be fired and the Bucs will eat his $20m cap hit next year and cut him since they’ll be cleaning house anyways.

  52. Joe in Michigan Says:

Marine Bucs: I’m surprised the Bucs got him, he’s a Detroit kid and had a visit with the Lions. Smart kid, Got TFO and Stayed TFO of Michigan! 😂

  53. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Baker has not proven he is good yet. Anyone saying he has is obviously biased, because he has not.

At best he proved he is 16th best.

But that is fine, because the year before he was ranked way worse. So that means he is possibly experiencing a growth spurt.

That’s why I’m not harping on him this year. He proved that he has unrealized potential. Will be reach that potential? That’s what this year will tell us.

Everyone who says we lucked out getting him? 2024 season will prove you right…or wrong. I look forward to seeing it. I’m excited to see it!

NFC division,bills,KC,lions,GB,jags,9er’s aren’t they top tier I c this season we pretty much similar schedule.

    …………
First you need to Remove KC from your list, 2023 Bucs did not play KC. Each year teams situations change and depending when you play them and what are their injuries means a lot.
    For Example:
Packers – Jags were 2 teams that no one knew if they would make Post Season, one did the other one did not.

Bills, 49’ers and Lions showed they were legitimate all through the season.

Eagles which you did not list were fading fast in playoffs but were legit early.

Next year schedule has the: The Eagles and the revamp Falcons (2)
    49’ers
    Ravens
    Cowboys
    KC
    Lions

Teams that you can’t sleep on are going to be the Raiders, Broncos and Saints (2)

Now we never know how these teams are going to be once they meet up, due to injuries or just being over rated. But I would say this schedule is much more difficult going in than the one last year.

Thats what you all said in 2023 . So I guess this time next year Baker will be getting a contract for 200 million.

  66. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … ‘Bucs just signed CB T. Thomas who was a rotational player with the Texans last season’.

I think he’ll turn out to be a very good signing also. Didn’t do much his first 3 years with Cleveland, but got quite a few def snaps his next 3 years with Houston. Got a hunch he’s got some decent experience as a Safety as well as a CB (at 5’10” & 205 lbs, I’m sure Todd Bowles will be looking at him in both positions anyways).

Actually has almost as many Special Teams snaps (1481) as he has snaps on defense (1623) in his 6 years. That could be a nice S/Ts gain for us. Can see though why the Texans let him go; missed 7 games with injury in 2022 and another 8 games in 2023. Wondering now if they’re looking at him as Carlton’s replacement in the hot tub? Hopefully that’s all in the past.

  67. Bucben61 Says:

Mayfield was very fortunate to get the contract the Bucs gave him. He’s an average QB at best. He needs to step up his game, no more 40 yards passing in first halves of games. You know, it is amazing that there are people who are paid a lot of money to find talent, but they don’t. Even in professional sports. Tom Brady-199th pick. Brock Purdy 262nd. So much for the experts…
Prove them wrong again Baker!!!! Oh you already did, sorry. Lmao again

  84. Davyboy Says:

    Don’t stop Shane

  85. Davyboy Says:

0-16 to 11-5 pulled them out of a death spiral 4-44 previous 3 years what a stud of a qb, ELITE is the word!!!

  86. Davyboy Says:

Worst 3 year record on the NFL books and a young qb with just 2 full years in the nfl pulled them out basically by his own talent and toughness. No other qb has ever done what Baker did, no one. 4-44 to 11-5 😂

  87. Winny Testaverde Says:

Get that singlet on, Coach Shane! Shoot the leg; cross the face!

I guarantee that anybody on here that criticizes Baker was never a starter …..
    …….

What gets me the most, these guys operate in a vacuum, they really don’t know much about other teams or players but will profess that Baker sucks. You just have to overlook them, there are idiots all over the world, I just try to avoid them.

  89. Jonzee Says:

Not sure.I’ve seen the team with a more hateful and ridiculous ram base. Way too many John madden g m’s in this group.

The butthurt Baker fanboos are in full affect! It’s amazing how sensitive you lil boo boos are if anybody doesn’t bow down to your Baker Fandom! It’s absolutely amusing to watch you all go on your lil tirades boo hooin and crying and getting so upset calling people names and what not. It’s great watching dudes instigating you and getting your skirts in.

    a bunch

  92. Chris Says:

The Browns organization won’t admit it but they regret the decision. Baker was not the the underachiever, the front office was.
