Todd Bowles Calls Baker Mayfield “A Natural Born Leader”

March 28th, 2023

Todd Bowles

Joe is patrolling the NFL Annual Meeting again today and that included a long chat with head coach Todd Bowles.

Joe talked to Bowles about new quarterback Baker Mayfield, of course, and part of that conversation included Bowles calling Mayfield “a natural born leader.” Bowles was clear that leadership will be a factor in his starting quarterback decision.

That sure makes the “natural born leader” comment quite compelling.

Bowles added that when he met Mayfield during the 2018 NFL Draft process, the two “really clicked.”

Joe asked for an example, and Bowles said he just “liked everything he stood for as far as leading the team on offense” at Oklahoma. Bowles added that he liked Mayfield a couple of years ago and that Mayfield has “natural leadership skills. They’re not overblown.”

Bowles added of Mayfield. “He’s hungry. He’s always hungry …”

“I can live with that. I can live with that right there.”

Trask has no chance. Totally unfair to the kid. I’m not a Trask fan boy, but this so-called competition is a total farce. As far as Mayfield, he starts off fast, and then he seems to wear out his welcome. He is a very energetic guy. I think the players will gravitate towards me. Baker has to earn the respect of the locker room.

  2. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

    Unlike Bowles himself.

  3. Jimbo Says:

As the Jason Leitch loving Joe-Joes will tell you, every NFL coach and GM lies more times than fox news. It doesn’t matter who they have, that player is the best. It is just too much. You can’t believe a word Bowles or Leitch says aout anything.

  4. Geno711 Says:

I think Baker would be good at corporate media events as a leader or motivational speaker.

I also loved at the pre-draft and draft combine the evidence of leadership skills that Jameis Winston showed.

It does not mean either will be an effective NFL quarterback.

  5. Baked Cookie Says:

It was obvious from the start they wanted Baker to start. But to say it’s a competition is a joke now after all the pressers and articles I have seen and read. I agree with bucsfan13, I feel bad for Trask not given a shot but it seems from high school and college he takes a while to adjust before excelling.

  6. Mike Johnson Says:

Bowles is ridin and dyin with Mayfiekd. Good Luck to the both of you. If you both have a winning season? You both stay. If not, you both get dumped in the Bay.

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

Coming from a natural born head coaching failure, not sure that’s the compliment wants to get from Bloweso.

  8. Mike C Says:

HA! I think Joe is Trollling Goatfarmer with this one.

  9. eric Says:

  10. eric Says:

    can be

  11. eric Says:

    if you do not produce

  12. Bucnjim Says:

There will not be any real competition. Mayfield is the Starter it’s really that simple! He wouldn’t have signed here if that isn’t the case.

  13. Allbuccedup Says:

    Everybody lies its a shame.

  14. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

    3-14 here we come

  15. Infomeplease Says:

Since Bowles has no idea on how to lead a team, he expects his players to do his job for him. I’m sure that works with special players like TB12. Someone ought to tell him Bowles you don’t always have a goat on your team… it’s your job to get the players playing their best!! No wonder he has such a bad win record.

  16. Infomeplease Says:

Bowles doesn’t demand his players play up to their abilities and beyond!

  17. Beej Says:

Do you idjits think if Trask beats out Baker in camp that he won’t be the starter? If for no other reason, if Trask is the starter then the Bucs save $4 million in incentive payments to Mayfield

  18. Allbuccedup Says:

Bowles makes Leeman Bennett look like Vince Lombardi.

  19. Thugster Says:

More proof of what a buffoon bowels is, you got Rooney ruled tampa, it is a shame. Good news is, you will have a first round draft pick soon

  20. Crickett Baker Says:

I have no faith in Bowles’s evaluation of players. I don’t think he is lying. I just think he is really bad at it.

  21. Geno711 Says:

Richard Williamson makes Todd Bowles look like a HOFer.

  22. westernbuc Says:

The amount of negativity in these comment sections after three consecutive playoff berths, two division titles and a superbowl is embarrassing. Bowles is a good coach, Licht is a great GM, Baker is a solid starter. We should be happy, instead fans are crying about the coach or Trask not being the starter. Well, keep crying. Just don’t be surprised if we’re a player in the NFC this year

  23. Iamabuc Says:

I don’t understand the crying about Trask not being given a chance. Look, if the guy was all that he would’ve shown it by now. Why do you think we got Mayfield?. Stop with the Trask whining. If he is any good ; now is his chance to show it. Go Baker, Go BUCS!!

  24. Iamabuc Says:

I don’t understand all the crying about Trask not being given a chance. Look, if the guy was all that, he would’ve shown it by now. Why do you think we Mayfield? If Trask is that guy; now is his time to show it. Go Baker! Go BUCS!!

  25. Vancouver Buc Says:

He needs to look up the meaning of ‘Leader’ in the dictionary. He had the ultimate leader last year under centre and he couldn’t even get that right

  26. Since76 Says:

If trask doesn’t or does get a fair shot the bottom line is ……….if Mayfield starts we will have a good chance at a high draft pick.

  27. Oneilbuc Says:

Lamabuc. I don’t think no one has said Trask is going to be good because no one knows if he’s good or bad . But we all know what Baker Mayfield is this is his 4th team in 6 years that’s a problem. I rather sink or swim with Trask than if he sucks than draft another quarterback next year it’s that simple. But to act like Baker Mayfield has been a good quarterback like some y’all are saying is just crazy. I rather go with the guy I don’t know if he’s good or not than to go with a guy that has prove he’s not good.

  28. Goatfarmer Says:

Who is y’all? Who were the 9 teams the defense beat when the Bucs won 8 games? Ever seen a picture of Brian Flores? And you think Bowels starts the players that fans want him to start?

    You are a real jeenious.
