Shaq Barrett Finds Work

March 12th, 2024

New gig.

UPDATED: Good to see that former Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett was able to quickly find work.

Shaq’s return from a blown Achilles was not good, only 4 1/2 sacks last season and he went invisible inteh playoffs. And given his salary, the Bucs couldn’t keep him under contract with those meager results and so many holes and players to re-sign.

However, Joe wrote last week about how there would be a quality free agent market for Shaq when the bell rang yesterday. And that came to fruition today. Per Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, Shaq will stay in the Sunshine State and only have to move four hours south as he signed with the Dolphins.

Joe has seen reports that it’s a one-year deal with incentives up to $9 million.

Joe is really, really happy for Shaq. He’s a big reason why the Bucs got a second Super Bowl win. And Shaq is a great guy. Good to see good things happen to good people.

Man, Bucs fans will lose their minds if Shaq has a strong season on the cheap.

I’m sure it’s a small, incentive-laden contract. I wonder why we couldn’t have done the same thing. Perhaps locker room dynamic?

  2. Capt.Tim Says:

Damn. I was hoping we could resign him at cheap rate, to reevaluate how that achilles is doing. It takes 2 years to fully recover- if you ever do

  3. Todd Says:

Awesome news. He’s a good man.

  4. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Happy for Shaq. Wish him the best.

  5. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Joseph

I believe there was a large bonus (@ $15M I believe) that would have become due if the Bucs kept Shaq.

Too hefty a price for such low production.

Good luck Shaq. You were a great Buc.

  6. Mike Says:

    Good luck Shaq B!

  7. CTBucs Says:

Good luck to Shaq! Great guy, glad he landed another gig. We need to go younger, faster, and more productive at the position.

  8. BucfanDMV Says:

Happy for Shaq I hope he does well down there:

Meanwhile what is going on with the Bucs addressing our interior OL there was some good guards out here that we didn’t even give a look to. As of now we haven’t done anything to get better. Our interior OL needs works.

  9. Boss Says:

    good for him!

he always put in the work.

  10. Timbucs2 Says:

Love that guy. He’s a quality dude, and he had a game for the ages against KC in the Super Bowl. Wish him the best.

Called that one. LaVonte will be in Miami too if Licht don’t Shat or get off the Pot.

Barrett will have a Come back year. Good for Him.

No article on Mr. Entertainment America’s QB Jameis Winston? No woman is safe in Ohio now with America’s groper and Mr Happy Ending on the the Browns.

  20. All_da_way Says:

    Thanks for the memories Shaq!

  21. White Tiger Says:

I wondered why we wouldn’t match it. Achilles injuries can be tricky, but typically, if you’re going to bounce back, it’s in year two. Do the Bucs have their eye on someone that is more reliable/and can get nearer Shaq’s original ability? Hope so.

  22. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Good for him. Wish him well, unfortunately teams move on from guys in mid 30s. And the cap about ensures you can only have a few guys from draft to retirement. Sort of sucks

  23. Nano107 Says:

    He’ll get 10 sacks

  24. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Do the Bucs have a policy of only signing their own free agents?

Yeah, his 10 sack season was nothing, right? His 8 sack season was nothing, right? Do you follow football?

Just curious. Where is our Diva White?

  29. Allbuccedup Says:

Have got to sign a FA pass rusher, that position and quarterback are Lichts kryptonite when it comes to the draft.

  30. Pickgrin Says:

Bucs only saved $4.9M off this year’s cap # by cutting Shaq.

I honestly thought they would keep him for 1 more year at that amount.

Still owe $17.4M in 2025 Dead cap hit for the Barrett restructures
and $11.8M in Dead cap to finish off the Ryan Jensen debacle
and $3.5M to FINALLY be done with the Russell Gage fiasco…
oh – and $18.85M in Dead cap tacked onto the end of Godwin’s expiring contract

That’s roughly $50M in Dead Cap hits the Bucs are coming into the 2025 season with….

All this ‘cap wizardry’ gets paid for at some point…..

  31. Pickgrin Says:

    Good Luck Shaq Barrett!

  32. BucsFan81 Says:

It’s ok we have plan 9 JTS to the rescue that is the game plan lol

  33. unbelievable Says:

Was hoping we were gonna try to bring him back at a lower salary, especially considering we STILL have dead cap money going towards him regardless… but I guess that rarely happens…

  34. Buccos Says:

He wa my favorite Buc there for a minute. Back when he was #58 and terrorizing qb’s

  35. Rover Says:

If Patrick Queen got 3 years 41M, Devin White is scr*wed. He may be begging to play on our team by April

  36. unbelievable Says:

Falcons signed WR Mooney too… damn they have been making some moves. Setting up Raheem for success. As opposed to the Bucs, who basically threw him into the ocean and said “hope you can swim!”

    @Dewey –

Jameis and Deshaun take an uber to a massage parlor… ah these jokes just write themselves…

  37. Simeon4HOF Says:

Love him and his family, so happy he found a landing spot. Enduring the injury and tragedy had to be no easy task. God bless the Barretts!

    Falcons signed WR Mooney too…

    ———–

Mooney is basically a discount dollar store version of Chris Godwin – which isn’t a dis, Godwin is really really good, and even a discount version of him is a huge upgrade over what they had.

The Falcons are absolutely the team to beat in the NFC South – and you’re right, they are setting Raheem up for success. I wish he wasn’t in the NFC so I could wish him luck, since I always liked him, but since he is in the NFC and the south, I hope the whole thing blows up and he’s back coaching the Bucs TEs in two years.

    ———-

Bowles completely ruined White’s value by constantly playing him in zone – he’ll be lucky to get like a $4m prove-it deal. If White is smart, he’ll go to a team that wants him to rush up the middle on every play and will take whatever they want to pay him on a one year deal, because if he’s used right, he’s a special player. But if you ask him to do what he can’t do well, then he’s just a guy.

What NFL does this? An ILB rush up the middle every play? Dude, for real, do you even watch football on TV?

  41. Joe in Michigan Says:

    *What NFL team

  42. Marques Says:

Bunting 3 years for 17 is great value

    White to sign with raiders.

  43. Tbbucs3 Says:

The Bucs are one of the 5 teams left to not sign an outside free agent….

Do something Licht! This team needs pash rush and safety help and better depth at RB and WR

  44. 76 bucsfan46 Says:

    Congrats Shaq

  45. Rod Munch Says:

Joe in Michigan – Doesn’t mean literally every play. As for a team that does use him right, that did use Davis correctly, there is a template for that, 2020 Buccaneers.

  46. Rod Munch Says:

Me and Licht are the same. When I play Madden, I’m never signing any of the big name FAs, they’re too expensive. I wait and sign some guys off the trash heap late in the process on the cheap. It’s a winning strategy as I’ve won over 1000 Super Bowls in my lifetime.

  47. Daniel Dream Says:

Good luck Shaq B! We’ll miss him: he’ll always be a Buc! He was my favorite player and the reason I began following the Bucs again. Thank you Shaq for all you did for this team and this fan base!

What’s all this fear of the falcons I’m reading here today? Did the pigeons sign Cousins today? Even if so, I’m not worried: I think Baker is just as good, plus he’s mobile and he has ME13 to throw to. That’s what I’m talking bout!

Did the trash Browns seriously just sign Winston? Holy crap. I’m so glad I root against the Browns now even though I’m a Cleveland native and they were my favorite NFL team for 45 years. Well, I was able to cheer for them again with Flacco… but that’s obviously done now.

Things worked out lucky for me I guess: I started following the Bucs a few seasons ago becuz I always loved Shaq Barrett and with Brady going down there it seemed like an interesting team to follow. Then it turns out the Browns go evil, Mayfield ends up here and I’m sure glad I started following the Bucs when I did or I’d have nobody! Let’s go Bucs! Not only is it a great franchise, they do things the right way. Too many belicheaters and scumbags around- it’s nice to cheer for the good guys.

Looking forward to going down there for a couple more games this season! Tampa is kinda parched in the summer for my old bones, but it’s perfect during football season! Let’s go Bucs! We shook up the world! 😉

  48. Mike Johnson Says:

Lets wish Shaq nothin but the best. He played hard and well for us. Hope he does well in Miami.

  49. BucaneroJim Says:

Shaq… best wishes for you and your family. Thanks for all your time as a Buc!

  50. teacherman777 Says:

He is still a solid OLB.

He can cover, he’s a sideline to sideline tackler, he makes big plays. He plays with effort.

    Gotta love Shaq.

I hope he gets 10 sacks next season.

I still think came back 4 games too soon.

He should have come back slower.

He came back to fast and too hard hard.

I also think, if coaches were smart, they would have let him play with limited snaps the first 4 games back.

We pushed him too hard and he came back too fast.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

  53. Rod Munch Says:

Great news on David – says the base is $9m – that’s double last years deal, quite the raise. Well worth it, that’s for sure.

  54. Leopold Stotch Says:

    ^^^^^^^
Rod: Devin White ruined his own career (or severely damaged it) by his own actions, such as not knowing how to tackle, overrunning plays at times, loafing at times, being terrible in coverage. Bowles did make a huge mistake by not cutting him after the Indy game, White was a complete embarrassment to the Bucs organization in that game, and several other games, honestly.

  58. HeavyE Says:

Yes, LVD IS BACK!!!! Let’s Go BUCS!!!!

  59. Rod Munch Says:

Joe in Michigan – So when you watched the 2020 defense, and you watched the 2022 and first half 2023 defense, you didn’t notice any difference… right? Same scheme, same playcalling, same thing – just White and Davis decided they’d stop being all-pro and pro bowl players, because they’re lazy and just wanted to stand around on defense. Man, that’s some Grade A scouting from you for sure, you should be a pro with your observational skills, I can’t believe teams aren’t hacking Joe’s servers to find your email so they can contact you to give you a lifetime contract.

  60. David Says:

I was hoping the Buccaneers could bring him back on a small contract, and he could be in the pass rush rotation, but I think Yaya and Nelson and someone else, potentially a new draft pick, will get the bulk of it

    Good for him. Great guy

  61. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Doesn’t take a genius to realize Bucs are targeting EDGE in the draft.

Darius Robinson and Braswell both fit the Bucs scheme extremely well and are late 1st round guys.

  62. matthew a veal Says:

my eyes , well they are not the best, but some of the production decline has to be from offenses getting rid of the ball quicker as described in the article about why safeties are the new running backs in terms of payment or lack thereof. it may also be that yaya’s numbers faded as his playing time increased. its not that edge rusher isnt as much of a priority, clearly they affect the game, but sack numbers and incentives may be different going forward – we may have to pay a lot in guaranteed money, not get as many sacks, but still be productive going forward

  63. Rod Munch Says:

matthew a veal – I think with Shaq, he said it himself a couple of years ago when he said he’s always been a marginal athlete – compared to other edge rushers anyways. And while he gets all the credit in the world for maximizing his talent, I think injury + age just caught up with him. To my eye, he just didn’t look quite as quick, and didn’t really seem to be able to shed blocks as well. It’s possible he could bounce back and still get another good-ish season, and maybe a change in scheme helps him – but he was just way too expensive to keep unless he was still a superstar.

Anyways, since he’s in the AFC and the Bucs don’t play the Dolphins, best of luck to him.

You might want to look in the mirror, little buddy. You don’t know everything about football, either.
