There’s A Market For Shaq Barrett

March 7th, 2024

Joe has done plenty of sniffing around as it relates to former Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett.

An iconic Buccaneer for five seasons, Shaq was informed of his Tampa Bay release about two weeks ago.

Shaq is not retiring. So who will want him at 31 years old after a disappointing 4 1/2-sack season that saw him go invisible in the playoffs?

Joe has been told by a couple of strong sources that Shaq will find a job chasing quarterbacks, probably in the cash realm of what Justin Houston and other older pass rushers have locked down on the open market in recent years.

Joe was told if there’s solid demand for Shaq, he might pull in $5 million or $6 million on a one-year deal plus incentives. If demand is weak, Joe was advised, it might be $2.5 million for Shaq plus incentives.

Is Shaq washed after his midseason Achilles tear in 2022? Probably. But he has enough good 2023 film — and it says a lot for Shaq that he played a full season off major surgery — for a team to think he could be dangerous as a situational pass rusher who’s great in the locker room.

The last thing Joe wants to see is Shaq landing in Detroit, Atlanta or New Orleans. Stay in the AFC, Shaq!

    Or, he could come back

As Jason said, ‘the door’s open’

  2. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Heck, at $2.5M bring him home.

  3. WillieG Says:

I agree with the others. Let him test the market and if he isn’t happy with what he finds, bring him back on an incentive laden deal.

  4. Tony Marks Says:

I never got the impression from the way it was handled and announced that he was completely done here. Would not be surprised to see him in a Bucs uniform in 2024.

What do you think we could get if we trade Carlton Davis?

  6. Capt.Tim Says:

Ive said it, since he tore it.
IT TAKES 2 YEARS TO RECOVER FROM AN ACHILLES TEAR.
    Resign him at market price.
We’ll regret it if we dont. Shaq is a fighter.

  7. Marine Buc Says:

Here is the deal for Shaq – $1.2m plus $1m per sack…

Make him earn it if he wants it.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

Bucs don’t have a replacement and cut Barrett to save $4.9M – so Shaq is obviously not worth $5M to the Buccaneers….

“What do you think we could get if we trade Carlton Davis?”

Davis only has 1 year left on his contract at just under $15M. Maybe a team that really needs a CB would give a 5th rd pick – maybe…

Bucs would save $6.9M in cap space with a trade or release…

Seems like a bad idea if the Bucs intend to compete in 2024.

McCollum took major strides last year – but our last impression of him was getting roasted in the 4th Quarter of the Divisional playoff game vs Detroit after Dean got hurt (again)….

  9. D Cone Says:

Usually players return from an Achilles within a year and return to form after two or three. I think Barrett slide was mostly mental. Like driving on a questionable tire one’s not going to push speeds well over the speed limit. He didn’t push it. Like a QB gets antsy and throws the ball way too early because he’s not sure about the Tackle protecting his blind side. Being unsure changes things.

Be a shame to see him as a sack leader with another team next season but I’ll
be watching. he’s fun to watch when He’s on his game.

  10. gbobucsfan Says:

Anyone see Whitehead posted a play of his from his Bucs days?

    Hope he comes back.

The way the market is for S, the Bucs should get a smokin’ deal

Agree, this off season should be good for him.

    @Pickgrin

    Thx for the color bro.
I would trade him for a 5 rounder, immediately.

I think he is a liability.
    Would save 7mm cap space.

    No brainer

  17. Boss Says:

he had his time……respect the man……but like with others….time to move on and get younger.

  18. SlyPirate Says:

    HERE’S A QUESTION:

Do you trust Licht to draft a rusher?

I love Licht as a GM. He picks winners at OL, WR, Punter, LB, S, DB … but … DE? A lot of busts. He goes after the “Looks like Tarzan, but plays like Jane.”-type.

  19. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

True. He was a cap casualty, but you bet your butt Bowles would love to have him back on a team friendly deal. Might have lost a step after the Achilles, still smart and can play a role in Bowles D. Would love to see them bring him back after he tests the FA waters

  20. realistic-optimistic Says:

I’m not surprised he has a market. Pass rushers are always needed, and he’s a high effort guy. He might put up decent numbers as a rotation guy on a good defense.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

There will almost always be a market for a guy who was that productive for multi-seasons, but I doubt there is anything left in his tank. But if he’s that cheap, bring him back.

  22. Boss Says:

meh…even at 2.5 mill they shoud get someone else… they got him on the CHEAP.

licht needs to pull another rabbit out of FA

  23. HC Grover Says:

    Good for him

  24. Capt.Tim Says:

    Boss,
QUICK, Go find that young, talented, cheap Pass rusher! Throw him in a sack and bring him here!
We’ll be waiting by OneBuc, with cake and balloons!

Exactly who do you have in mind?

Dak Prescott is getting 60 mil a year. Wow! Not exactly tearing it up in the Playoffs . . . .

  25. Boss Says:

    @capt tim

it’s football, it aint rocket science.

    there’s a dozen of em’

locals here are too locked into our players. finding a diamond in the rough is part of lichts job…or so i thought. you all want to sign people who have been there and done that when we need to be signing up and comers

  26. Kidfloflo Says:

U can’t have enough quality humans and leaders in the locker room sign him back for a good price plus tons of incentives…heck all contacts should be heavy incentive ladden…you would see ppl ball out!

  27. David Says:

For 3mil 1 year deal… They should take him as a situational guy and make sure JTS closes the door behind him

  28. Mike S Says:

This is the best free agent player market I think the NFL has ever had with all the players available.

But lets overpay for Baker who had 5 good games last season and get nobody.

    HAHAHA

    Clown show

  29. Mike S Says:

Whitehead showing his Bucs highlights on the socials.

    Imagine him playing alongside Winfield.

LOL wait don’t do that – it will never happen because Baker had 5 good games last season and wants $40m.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

If they can bring back Whitehead, they should do that, we’ve seen what bad safety play does to the defensive scheme.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

BTW, different subject, but I just saw more of the contract details for Evans deal on OTC.

Evans will count for $6.9m on this years cap, and $22m next year – then $13m in dead cap space the following year. They gave him a total of three void years, but that’s all accounting trickery to bring down the cap hit this year.

Also, keep in mind that from previous restructures, etc, Evans was already on the books with a $12.1m dead cap hit – so in total, he’ll eat up $19m in cap space this year. Quite the deal considering Godwin is $27.5m cap hit this year.

BTW, if you’re looking at the roster, looking at where the Bucs could get some more money — Godwin is your man. He’s in the last year of his deal – and it would be really difficult, I think, to justify giving him more than Evans is averaging, and coming off a couple of goodish years, I think you might be able to get another 3-year deal done at probably around $17m. But that is a risk as Godwin has not looked like his old self for a couple of years now, even if he still is a very good #2 WR.

  32. SB~LV Says:

If the Bucs want him @ around market price, he’ll be playing for the Bucs

  33. adam from ny Says:

go to his stats…the one outstanding mvp type year was an anomaly…

check his stats…he is not even like a standard double digit guy…

he hit 10 on the nose once, and had 8 one year – which is decent…

a decent sackmeister should have 8 sacks every year…like one every 2 games…

love shaq and all he’s done as a buc, but maybe he was cut for a reason…

would i like him back for 2024…sure…but i wanna see him fugg with double digit sacks again

Bring back Shaq! Incentive laden deal is the best for both parties! Cmon Shaq!
