Mike Evans Signing Has To Mean Baker Mayfield Signing Is Imminent

March 4th, 2024

Baker Mayfield re-signing soon?

You only need to connect the dots.

Bucs legend Mike Evans let it be known he wasn’t interested in going to a team that had a lousy quarterback or a rookie quarterback. He wanted to play for a good team with an established quarterback.

So if the Bucs were in serious danger of losing Mayfield, Joe doesn’t think there was any way Evans would have signed before the free agency dinner bell rings a week from Wednesday, following the legal tampering period kicking off next Monday.

And Joe knows Evans and Mayfield communicate regularly. So Evans has to believe Mayfield re-signing with the Bucs is virtually a done deal, a mere formality.

The fact that Evans signed before Mayfield is a bit surprising to Joe for this very reason: quarterback.

When Joe spoke with Mayfield during Super Bowl Week in Las Vegas, Joe asked Mayfield what the percentages were of Evans returning to Tampa Bay if he, Mayfield, re-signed with the Bucs.

Mayfield smiled at Joe and replied, “Pretty high.”

Well, Evans signed before Mayfield. Joe thinks we can all do the math here.

If not there will be some people freaking out on here.

  2. OlBoy Says:

Mike before Baker makes sense due to Mikes tenure. It’s a show of respect but I think you are right about Baker. I’m sure that’s a done deal it just needs some separation.

  3. Bowles4President Says:

After the lost decade, it’s crazy to think that there is a real possibility we could win the division for the 5th year in a row.

  4. Capt.Tim Says:

I agree. They both made it clear.
They wanted to be signed here as a Pair.
Signing Mike before free agency was a great Job by Jason Licht.
It really was. And Bravo to Mike for showing real loyalty to the Bucs!

Now, to lock up one of the alltime great free Agent finds!
You Found us a franchise, Allpro QB Mr.Licht. Fantastic work.
Now, lets keep him in Pewter for the next 5 years or so!

  5. Tb bolts Says:

Lock up Chase McLaughlin before faker pickfield. Our FG kicker is the only reason this team made the playoffs.

LOL. I am sure the kicker got us enough first down to be able to kick a field goal too right?

I understand . its shaping up to be a baaaaaaad week for QB1 haters.

  8. BillyBucco Says:

Lol. Watch them trade Mike now.
    Now that would be crazy.

  9. Tb bolts Says:

Tony miss the marks I hope you enjoyed the last play of the season:) a dart right into the defenders numbers… and with time to spare! And not even close to FG range lmao not that it would’ve mattered at that point anyway. Ol UNreliable strikes again

  10. BillyBucco Says:

Tony Marks talking smack BEFORE they even sign Baker.
Im pretty sure you don’t have chickens.

talking smack with a smile on my face because Evans, whose agent just said he will only lay for a stud Qb, just signed with the bucs a team tryng to sign Baker.

Its great day when you all look like fools.

  15. Truth be Told Says:

Of course this is a done deal. Franchise Winfield redo Wirfs set the table up for a successful 2024 campaign. Now pass rush. Pass rush. Past rush.

Nope. it was a great play by the defender. I enjoyed brady playing too even though he had SEVEN playoff games he played that he lost due to his interception. What a bum. 🙂

apparently in the NFl an int doesn’t prove you are a bad Qb especially when you have very few like Baker. sorry. try something else.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m guessing Evans knows the state of negotiations with Mayfield, and that he is a lock to sign.

I half expect a 2 year deal with Mayfield as well…which would be surprising, but would greatly reduce the risk for the Bucs.

4th year. Bucs won the Super Bowl in the 2020 season but the Saints won the division.

  21. T. McGee Says:

That’s a lot of wind until someone hands you a $50+M check without even changing your kids’ school zone. He’ll play for whoever is the QB.

  22. BigEd Says:

Great day for Tampa Bay, as “The Band” gets back together! Now is the time
for all the trolls, wannabe fans, GM’s, etc. to stand down ! “GO BUCS”

  23. BucVoyager Says:

Trask will not make it out of the preseason. Write it down

  24. I remember 21 Says:

I’ve said it before, but now it’s time to place your bets. Baker will sign a 3 year deal, bowles will get fired after next season (brutal schedule + bad coaching = bad record), Baker will start for the new coach for all or part of season 2 (depending on if/ where we draft a QB), and he will be gone before playing a down of year 3.

  25. Woodenman Says:

21 we will remember how wrong you were

  26. Shane Callahan Says:

Well, it looks like Evans disagrees with all the Baker-hating “experts” on this site who said Baker is not an elite QB. 🤣🤣🤣

  27. SlyPirate Says:

EVANS SIGNING IS SO INTERESTING FOR BAKER …

Evans signed a 2 year contract. Baker-Evans were a package deal. I’m sure Baker’s contract is already done, minus minutia, but the Bucs now have all the bargaining power.
    1. They don’t “need” Baker to resign Mike.
    2. They probably don’t want Baker past 2 years.

It may make sense to franchise him. The primary concern is Baker’s health vs playing style. I don’t see him holding up for more than 2 seasons. If the Bucs in Win today, Baker’s negotiating power tops out at the Franchise Tag.

  28. GhostofBrady Says:

Baker is a team guy all the way. To him, the players are real friends. No way Mike rejoins the Bucs and Baker lets his guy down. I just hope his Annual Average pay is above $35M. Believe me, if Baker balls out the next two years, the non-guaranteed money on the back-half of that AAV contract which the Bucs will execute will be a bargain. If Baker doesn’t do well, at least they made Mike happy his two last HoF career years here.

Let’s play the Bake projection game. Total Years, Total Contract Value, Total Guaranteed, Guaranteed at Sign. Void Years.

    4 years $150M Total (2024 – 2027).
    $70M Guaranteed
    $30M Guaranteed at sign
2 Void Years spread the cap hit $7.5M in 2028 and $7.5M in 2029.
    Cap hit for 2024 $15M.

Do you try to be ignorant? Idiot.

  30. TampabayDJ Says:

Told you Evans would not hit the open market ! All you fake fans, I remember everything you said.

  31. Gene Says:

If you think that Tampa had “all the bargaining power” you’re so wrong. I think they’ll work it out and the BUCS will do great but Baker could still go elsewhere if the deals bad. Let’s remember that Mike wouldn’t be the first receiver to find things aren’t what they seem, forget how to catch until the team cuts them, and take the $ and go to better places. Idt Tampa’s management is looking at this from the ” we have all the power” perspective.

  32. infomeplease Says:

    One down, now BM6, AWjr31, CM4, and TW78. LFG!

  33. infomeplease Says:

If BM6 does get swooped up by another team, signing ME13 helps to bring in someone like Kirk Cousins. I don’t see that happening but stranger things have happened. We’ll see.

  34. Rod Munch Says:

I’m pretty sure it means Brady is about to unretire – that’s why Mike was talking about winning a SB, and why Brady was out showing how he’s faster now than when he was a rookie.

  35. Capt.Tim Says:

    John Dixon.
Havent seen that one before. I wonder which hater is using that name.
I think there’s only 3-4 haters. Each using 3-4 post names. There arent that may stupid people in Tampa, to fill up the JoeBuc site the way they do.
Im sure the 3 of them set around during their break at Krystals.talking about how much they love Kyle Trask. Hed Rod Munch, you work with them. How many of them are there?

Bucs will announce Baker signing this week. Hopefully they leave. Its so out of hand, that its hard to come here lately. Nothing to read but same ignorant
“I love Kyle Trask” and “I hate Baker” post, ad nauseam.

Will be glad when we can actually discuss football again. Stupidity level needs to lower draatically.

These nitwits are saying they know QB play better than the professionals who work 90 hours a week evaluating it. Than the players. Keep yapping your sausage holes. Stupid is as stupid writes.

  43. Capt.Tim Says:

Out of Centers who played 100 snaps,
    Our Center is ranked 34th.
Same standards with Guards, Arron Stennie is Ranked 79Th.
How did we win a game last year? No wonder our Running Game was ranked Last.
THAT should be the top Topic here.
Not if some noodle armed draft bust should start, instead of our ProBowl QB.
Its embarrassing. Joe and this site deserves better

  44. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

I kinda figured after the glazers sold 25% of Manchester United recently, that the Bucs were in good shape to sign their key players. Go Bucs!

  45. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

@captain Tim, @dave pair. You guys rock. It’s refreshing on this site to see daily brilliance. Keep up the good work!

  46. David Says:

Looks like Baker is on the verge of a 4 year 120 million dollar contract with 85 million guaranteed.

  47. ATLBUC Says:

    Joe said:
He wanted to play for a good team with an established quarterback.
    —————————-
First you quoted him as saying “elite” quarterback. Now you say he said an “established” quarterback. Which is it. Baker is neither elite or established. As of right now it seems like he’s content to roll with the only quarterback on the roster, Kyle Trask!!

  48. TampabayDJ Says:

Sounds like Joe was wrong about a few things. He thought Mike was going to test the market and that KC was going to pay $30 mil for him . I said all along that KC doesn’t pay for older players and even if so , Mike wouldn’t leave our Bucs for a couple million dollars. But my posts weren’t posted. I sent 3 posts in a row last night, agreeing with captain Tim, and saying similar things. But they didn’t make the cut. Mike was never going anywhere, tat was agent talk . Go Bucs

  49. ModHairKen Says:

It’s the tag, Josepher. The tag.

Licht played Evans against Baker and Mike took the money first.

Now it’s Baker v. Winfield. The last one gets the tag.

  50. Capt.Tim Says:

    Bring back the lawn chairs,
Thank you so much, for the kind words! I love talking to other Buc fans!

    GO BUCS!

  51. AlstottRocks Says:

Here’s hoping Baker Baker Touchdown Maker signs this week! Another year with Mayfield and Evans will be fun to watch!

  52. Badbucs Says:

Galactically stupid. What is the over/under on the season ending hammy. Can’t believe it. 31 years old. Didn’t learn from Jensen, Shaq or Brady.

  53. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    I second Captain Tim.

The Bucs offense will become dangerous if the Bucs replace Hainsey with Van Pren or Frazier at Center.

Great, big, athletic centers like Jackson Powers or Van Pren or Frazier make guards better.

Draft Missouri DE Darius Robinson with our first round pick. He gave Georgia’s OT and projected first round pick Amarius Mims fits in their matchup this past season. In Round 2 Georgia’s stud center Van Pran should be available and West Virginia’s Frazier could be available and Jackson Powers will not be available then.

That would address 2 of the Buc’s glaring weaknesses

If you are losing in the A Gap like the Bucs did with Hainsey, it’s a wonder that Baker played as well as he did passing the ball and that our running back was close to 1,000 yards rushing.

The Bucs biggest needs and what we should all be talking about is fixing their interior offensive line and praying to get an elite edge rusher for our defense, and not debating the QB position that is settled as Baker.

    Mike’s the Man!

  60. Shane Callahan Says:

Atl-Bucs and Clbummer! and the rest of the haters: Please quit being ignorant bummers!!!

  61. Shane Callahan Says:

TOTALLY agree with whoever said the offensive problem wasn’t Evans, Baker, Godwin, or White. The ONLY problems were our guards, center, and playcaller. Our playcaller is now the head cheerleader for Carolina. Now, if we can get an interior O-line that isn’t worst in the league, this team will be able to hang with anyone even if the defense just hangs around the middle of the league. Go Bucs!

  62. Oneilbuc Says:

I will ask this question again can you win a superbowl with Baker Mayfield without the 02 bucs defense? If not it will be a waste of time sniging Baker Mayfield. I don’t care about fun season I care about superbowles. And miss me with bringing up other quarterbacks that we know you don’t have to have a historical defense to win a superbowl like you have to have with a quarterback like Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield is not a trash quarterback just like Garden Michew is not trash but you ain’t winning a superbowl with them at all. You ain’t even making it to the championship game with those kind of quarterbacks without a great running game and a historical defense.

  63. vadertime Says:

Evans got a sweet 52 million dollar 2 year deal with 35 million guaranteed. He can retire as a Buccaneer in his early 30s. Strategically, on the part of the Bucs front office, this is bait to bring Baker back to the Bucs (notice a lot of “B”s in that sentence). I think Baker will be back and the contract is probably a mere formality. Baker wants to stay in Tampa and Tampa loves Baker, so it’s a match made in football heaven. We still need to get rid of Bowles. Go Bucs.
