Dianna Russini: Baker Mayfield Will Not Take “Hometown Discount”

March 4th, 2024

Update.

With Bucs legend Mike Evans in the fold, all eyes turn to Bucs pending free agent quarterback Baker Mayfield.

To Joe, this is simple. If Evans signed this early, this has to mean Mayfield’s re-signing is imminent or at least a mere formality.

However, Dianna Russini of The Athletic, fresh from Indianapolis at the NFL’s winter festival, decided to throw a fly in the ointment. Her source(s) seem to think Mayfield re-signing with the Bucs isn’t a slam dunk.

Joe isn’t worried. Mayfield, for all his talking at the Media Center at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas during Super Bowl Week, made it clear he wants to come back to the Bucs.

Last week Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht said he wants Mayfield back. And he added when a player wants to return and the team wants him back, far more often than not both sides find a way.

In Indianapolis, Licht sure appeared very confident he could re-sign most of his free agents. Joe thinks the Mayfield re-signing is just a matter of hours or handful of days.

All these opinions are total BS……they have no idea…..Beckles was totally wrong this morning.

  3. JimBobBuc Says:

Maybe Diana has good sources, like Baker’s agent? I’m not confident the national media people know more than us at JBF. Baker will get signed.

  4. Beeej Says:

    I hope it’s less than $30/year

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

She is claiming they JUST started negotiations? They have been talking for weeks,

  6. Anderson5599 Says:

Didnt they say the bucs were far away from a deal with evans last week? That Turned out to be fake news

She had a story she was sitting on and didnt think it was a ground breaking rumor, so she springs it after this, she is wrong a ton just like the local bspn reporter for the bucs, diversity hires

  9. SmoothBayRider Says:

Mayfield has already on the record saying that Money isn’t a big driver for him. Not sure how this is even a story for Russini.

  10. zzbuc Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

Beckless is wrong most of the time…..

  11. lambchop Says:

She’s so dumb. Does anyone think Baker wants to go to a new team and city and “establish” himself yet again? He will get paid well, but whatever the amount is, I guarantee it will still be a bargain if he did choose to really test the market. Dude has been cast off so many teams with no continuity. This is his last shot to set some roots with a talented team. Does he really want to go to a crappy team who will overpay him and cement his legacy as a failed draft pick? Tampa gives him a chance to tell his haters that he’s no Johny Foosball.

In the famous words of Judge Smails, “Well, the world needs ditch diggers, too”. In Tr@sk’s case, the world needs clipboard holders, too.

  13. Since76 Says:

Mayfield isn’t as a high priority signing as the zealots think. I believe he’s last in line. Where a below average player should be. If he played better and was consistent it would be different. The reason it’s not a sure thing is because he really wasn’t that good. If licht puts a ton of cap on him and plays like his normal self (career average) which he more than likely regresses, licht will look like a bust with him. Just my opinion.

  14. BillyBucco Says:

She said that before Mike signed

  15. Tony marks Says:

Beckles inider info was just the most recent proof that joirnalist have no one in the room of negoitaitons. Gms certainly aren;t discussing details, Agenrs aren’t and neither are the players.

  16. Capt.Tim Says:

Bucs have already given Baker a contract to look at.
That was reported yesterday. Shes just spewing typical drivel.
As long as shes saying anything. Thats all she has to do.

Mike Evans said he wouldnt play for a team, unless they had an Elite QB.
His agent repeated it even more Clearly!
Mike signing means Baker is gonna be a Buc for Years to Come.

So is Jason Licht. This is just an incredible Job.
Just waiting for the other Shoe to drop!

  17. StormyInFl Says:

“If licht puts a ton of cap on him and plays like his normal self (career average) which he more than likely regresses, licht will look like a bust with him. Just my opinion.”

And if Licht lets him walk and he goes to Atlanta and haunts the Bucs 2x a year for 5-6 years, while going 5-12 to “see what Kyle Trask has”, he’ll be tarred and feathered.

    ———————————————————————————-

If you want the truth, a player’s agent is NOT a good source to listen to just days before free agency. They’re not someone you rely upon for truthful information when they’re in the middle of a negotiation on behalf of their client.

  20. Saskbucs Says:

Playing hard ball eh? He will be back. This just means you guys clamouring for 30 million a year or less aren’t gonna like it. 34-40 million per incoming.

  21. Since76 Says:

Why bring up trask. Didn’t mention the licht bust of a second Rd pick. Licht is rolling the dice either way he goes. My money is on him being tarred and feathered if Mayfield is signed. Just from what I watched last year.

  22. BillyBucco Says:

Listen Im elated that they signed Mike. They obviously want Baker, bit at the right price. Mike could have got more. I was just thinking yesterday it would be a shame to get NOTHING in return for Mike. If Baker DOES sign elsewhere, Im sure there is a clause in Mikes contract about him deciding which team he is traded to.
Could still happen next year of Baker regresses. I want them to get a 1st round pick for Mike if he leaves and this AT LEAST means close to that.
    Well done Licht.

  23. Chipbuc Says:

She’s the one I believe who said the Bucs wouldn’t make the playoffs after they signed Brady. Haven’t seen her be right about one thing Bucs related.

  24. kgh4life Says:

Baker definitely deserves to get paid, but how much? There needs to be a give and take on both sides. Then again, it’s not my money.

  40. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    3 years, $60 Guaranteed, $90 total.

  41. Stickcarrier Says:

    Let’s sign Kirk Cousins!

  42. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Anything less than that would make me very happy.

  43. Baking with Evans Says:

Baker will take us back to the playoffs.
No Baker and Trask as QB1 = collapse of culture.

    In Licht we trust!!!

  44. It's Corn Says:

watch the Bucs trade Evans to wherever Mayfield signs lol

  45. SB~LV Says:

Another way to look at it is that Mike Evans would NOT have signed unless he knew Baker would be back!
    Bottom line
    Good news!

  46. T. McGee Says:

Go get Cousins at a discount. He’s made about $200M already and is not a natural fullback.

  47. Mike Johnson Says:

Cheap Bucs are gionna have to pay Baker at least 30 mil per year.

  48. BucsFan Says:

It depends on the $$-Baker is not a 35 a year guy.

  49. Marine Buc Says:

Baker doesn’t need to give any discounts.

He should sign a deal for @ $30M per season. If he wants more let him test free agency.

No need to overpay an average QB.

  50. Bucs 95 Says:

If he trys too be too picky we could always go after russell wilson 😉

  51. Conner50 Says:

I’m sure Jason Licht is gonna make the right decision with Mayfield and not over pay for him. Don’t need to be another team over paying and looking like a fool one year after the fact.

  52. BucVoyager Says:

Evans doesn’t want to play with Cousins. He’s not an upgrade over Baker either.

  53. Not Says:

    @ Billy bucco
Try to pull ur head out of your arse .
None of what you said makes any sense, wild speculation on your part.
You’re inhaling your fartzzzz too long .

  54. Buccaneer rick Says:

Just tag him and see if he is even worth another year without canales

  55. Buccaneer rick Says:

If he shows out this year give him a big time contract if not send him on his way

  56. Beeej Says:

A modest running game, a better center, an effective 4 man pass rush, Bucs can beat anyone

  57. Jeffrey Becker Says:

    makes too much sense bonzai

  58. Allbuccedup Says:

Offer him the same deal as Evans if he refuses let him try free agency and tell him the deal is on the table until march the 18th then bye bye. I have a strong feeling no team will offer him that much. Then if he falters your not stuck with him for a long contract.

  59. Fansince76 Says:

What great news today on Evans!!
    LOL on Beckles take!!

  60. Buccos Says:

No wonder Licht was feeling so confident the other day. He already knew he had it in the bag

just crazy if thaey dump this much cash on mike and bake…but hey, it’s all about the short term I guess.

That being the case, they may just throw the bank at him.

enjoy toilet bowl and the misery coming when both bake and mike come in 30lbs over weight…mike pulls a hammy and bake blows a shoulder

  62. Critmark Says:

All these ‘experts’ just say sh!t to get clicks. Orlavsky is now saying Caleb Williams should not be the #1 pick. And yes, he has been saying for well over a year that Caleb is a generational talent and for months the Bears ‘must draft him’.
They have to say something/anything to set themselves apart. In a weeks time when Baker has signed, no one will remember or care what she had to say. It’s a media game.

I don’t believe for one minute that Evans signed without knowing who the QB will be next year. The Bucs will sign Baker in the next 48 hours.

  63. Conner50 Says:

    @Boss
Take your loss and move on, you were wrong and now you’re mad they signed a HOF receiver? Lmao your a loser bro

  64. SlyPirate Says:

    WAY MORE INTERESTING …

Evans and Mayfield were a “package deal”. Evans just signed a 2-year deal. If they are package, so …
    1. Does Mayfield get a 2-year deal?
    2. Does it make sense to just franchise Mayfield at $32M?

Bucs have all the negotiating power with Evans under contract.

    ——————–
Not really. The Bucs have more flexibility if they work out a deal. If they tag him, the entire amount hits the 2024 cap.

  66. J Says:

If Beckles shares that same sentiment then Baker should be signing any minute for less than what’s being reported.

Franchise # is $36 and some change, which would hit the salary cap all at once. So NO and Mayfield is not going to sign for 2 years.

I guess the real professionals think differently about it than the five Baker haters with four usernames a piece.

Forget this year since Any Qb would includes Trask why didn’t they just roll with him last year? oooops.

Might have something to do with no WR in the league every throwing the ball to himself and why the claim a WR makes ANY Qb look good is as dumb as dirt. of course Evans could get yardage with Jameis. so what? Jameis never looked good throwing all those picks so you just lost the point forever.

  69. Lol Says:

Bucs end up with 9 day 1 & 2 picks at following positions:

Edge rusher, WR, C, CB, S, LB, G, RB & TE.

Trask takes Bucs all the way to SB, beat Bills 48-0

    @ Critmark

I was pretty underwhelmed by Caleb Williams this past season at USC. He was surrounded with tons of talent and what did USC accomplish with him at QB?

His best games were against San Jose State and Nevada and they barely beat a mediocre Colorado team and USC lost to a pretty lackluster UCLA team.

Every ranked opponent USC played against they lost to (Notre Dam, Utah, Washington, Oregon) with the exception of Louisville who was ranked #16.

Then after the loss to Utah he is seen crying in his mother’s arms like a little baby which to me shows mental and emotional weakness. Not exactly traits I want in my franchise QB.

Time will tell but I believe Caleb Williams is highly over-rated – Buyer beware.

  72. Jack Clark Says:

I thought ME might move on, but I am glad the Glazers paid the man. He deserves every penny! Maybe, they are turning a corner here and want to have a perrenial contender. Actions always speak louder than words. I would expect BM to sign now after this, or maybe JL has a backup plan here? I think BM needs to stay. Hopefully, he is mature enough now to see he is somewhere where he is appreciated and needs to also think about the long term plan for himself post playing career.

  76. Chief Says:

Baker’s deal to be announced: 4 years, $175 million. $120 guaranteed.

That’s a great deal for both as the QB market Will be reset when Dak gets extended to $55-$60/year. Discount for a pro bowl/playoff winning QB.

  77. Allbuccedup Says:

Franchise tag for a QB is now 38 mil since the cap increase. Thats totally ridiculous there are only about 7 or 8 worth that in the nfl. The NFL should just eliminate the salary cap like the other sports its just a joke. Let the teams sign who ever the want and see what happens let the best coached team win. Only let teams carry 43 vets on the team and fill the other 10 spots with rookies. Expand the draft to 10 rounds and the nfl combine accept more players.

  78. Chief Tbird Says:

Let’s play the Bake projection game. Since we all think we are GMs better than Licht-house. Total Years, Total Contract Value, Total Guaranteed, Guaranteed at Sign. Void Years. I think $30M annual average is a little low. $30M cap hit each year for next two years sounds about right.

My amateur GM projection like my mock drafts:
    4 years $150M Total (2024 – 2027)
    $70M Guaranteed
    $30M Guaranteed at sign
2 Void Years spread the cap hit $7.5M in 2028 and $7.5M in 2029.
    Cap hit for 2024 $15M

In 4 years from in 2028, those 7.5M voided dollars will be even less fraction of the salary cap. And if Baker does well the next two years, they may update and negotiate in 2026 or 2027 to help with the cap again and maybe add more years.

I’m happy we signed ME13. I stated several times that he would get @ $23-$25M. He ended up getting $26M. I was a little surprised it was only a two year deal but that is fine by me.

I hope we can get Baker signed at a reasonable rate.

Sorry to burst your little bubble – but Baker is not an “elite” NFL QB and that is what we have been debating.

Mike Evans signed with the Bucs because he finally realized the market was somewhat weak for his services – there is an article on PFT right now stating the exact same thing.

    Calm down little guy.

  89. 727BUC Says:

Since 76 says: “where a below average player should be”

What part about last season makes you believe that baker is “below average” ???? There are only 32 starting QBs in the NFL and he PERFORMED better than 22 of them. Your math sucks! Lol. Haters gonna hate but I’ll tell you this…. ABOVE AVERAGE QBs don’t grow on trees and Mr. Mayfield certainly fits the bill as just that. ABOVE AVERAGE bud. Oh and by the way it was his first year here. Why people want to assume that he will regress instead of improve is kinda weird. Fans are just that tho…. fanatic… and usually wrong. Sign the man. Pay him. And let’s go get another NFC south title and try and make a run for the SB. We won a freaking playoff game last year when ppl were clamoring for a top draft pick and a tank year. 101. Farmer Says:

Why do so many Bucs fans seem to forget the over 20yrs of QB hell before Brady? So many people hoping Baker doesn’t re-sign so you can go back to watching garbage game after garbage game? Remember when you guys were HAPPY about Fitzpatrick in 2018 because for two weeks you got to watch decent QB play and now because you lucked into the GOAT for a few years your standards are unrealistically high.

A good franchise does not let a QB who took them to the post season and embarrassed the defending NFC champs just walk away, sure, he might regress but as the famous saying goes, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Giving up on a winning QB to try your luck in the draft is what perennial losers do.

Too many can’t tell the difference between the opinion page and actual reporting.

In negotiations, they have things called breakthroughs. Sides can be far apart and in a fairly short amount of time still get done. People also feed reporters information that they think helps their side. Hoping that will put pressure on the other side. We should always keep these things in mind when consuming any reporting

They already know they can’t win with him, he’s proven it by not even being able to shred Bowels’ lousy pass defense in practice. This BS about him not getting a fair shake is so asinine. People really think a coach who must win would make a decision to not give himself and the team their best chance to win?

That witch needed to make a splash so in typical Fake News muck raking fashion she lets go a cheap shot story title that reads like an iditment of Baker as some kind of mercenary sticking up the home team that gave him the chance. What a load of horse manure.

Giving the talking turs anti Baker trolls yet another chance to fling their worthless opinions out yet again the great anoyence of the general audience.

Not to worry Baker isn’t going anywhere. He has put himself in perfect position to succeed. Last year he literally built that new offense one play at a time and having exceeded the expectations of virtually everyone {except for Chris Spielman}is now getting all the cooperation and assistance of the team he wishes. He has his OC.He has ME back and more talent to come in the draft.
Baker was drafted #1 and was at the front of the line with all the new generation of NFL gunslingers. Baker experienced success and then a series of misfortunes and fell to last. Like a Hollywood hero he got one last chance and made the most of it. He exceeded the performance of two thirds of the NFL’s starting QBs this past year and in 2024 we will see him close the distance to t the very top echelons and he may very well hoist a Lombardy trophy and reclaim his position at the front of the line.
Remember most of the young guns are in the AFC. They will player eachother in their divisions and their conference and beat on each other and upset eachother.
Baker playing in the NFC only faces only a few big time QBs like Stafford and Purdy and Hurts and Goff. I like our chances in 2024.

  110. Mike Says:

If Baker resigns, he’s going to want us to draft some better O-linemen, especially at Center. Whatever else happens, we need to do that and give our QB a chance.

which doesn’t touch your claim that Evans would not want to sign with baker based on what you claimed the agent must mean . HE DID and you lose . All you are doing now is spinning your wheels in your mud and sinking your ship faster.

  115. Rod Munch Says:

I’m not a fan of Baker, but I have no issues with this stance. He took a prove it deal last year, and now wants to cash in, no issues with that. Hopefully it’s with another team, because the chances he reverts back to being what he’s always been, a bust, is about 90%. But there is a chance he doesn’t – which is why you’d consider bringing him back for one year.

In any case I doubt the QB market is as hot as people seem to think, not for Baker, but I don’t feel strongly about it and could be proven wrong – it only takes one team to destroy the market, like how the Jags did giving $20m to a middling WR Christen Kirk and messing up the entire market for years.

    So you agree with me?

Baker Mayfield is not an “elite” QB.

    Right?

And I would pump the breaks on claiming Dak will get $60M in Dallas… Jerry Jones just came out and said it is possible that Dak will play out his original contract which was a 4 year $160M deal…

Again – I’m not saying Baker is a bad NFL QB. He is just a mediocre NFL QB.

If the Bucs re-sign Baker I just hope the Bucs don’t overpay him and have an exit strategy after the two year mark.

Elite QB salaries have gone up but a mediocre QB does not deserve the same as an “elite” QB.

Do you understand the words that are coming out of my fingers?

  119. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tony

Baker Mayfield is a mediocre NFL QB.

    Not “elite”.

  120. Rod Munch Says:

The Saints will release Winston next week – sign him. He had a better QBR in 4 of his 5 seasons in Tampa than Baker had last year in his ‘career year’. Plus Winston would be much cheaper, allowing you to sign a new center or guard – plus a third WR or perhaps another TE. All of that and you get the better player.

Or, as I’ve said all along, trade for Justin Fields. He’s dirt cheap this season, still cheap next season, was the more consistent player down the stretch, and would give you a huge weapon running the ball at QB. Plus, again, that extra cap would let you improve the team – all while getting the better, more consistent, player.

Or, get another middling QB like Gardner Minshew. Him and Baker are basically the same guy, but Minshew is a lot cheaper – plus had the better QBR last season and the better winning percentage on a worse team.

In any case, there’s lots of options to replace a mediocre QB who will almost certainly decline in play coming off a career year. There’s no reason to get your panties in a bunch. Baker is very very replaceable if he prices himself out of town.

Give him a 4 year deal at $15m/yr then sign him to a non-NFL contract for 5 mil per year as a goodwill embassador for Glazer, Inc. Send him and his family to England to give a pep talk to the soccer boys once a year. Goes into effect his first year of retirement ONLY if he retires as a Buc. There’s probably only 5-6 QB’s that are elite and true difference makers that will have your team in SB contention year in and year out. There’s no shame in not being that guy. Most QB’s aren’t

  128. JA Says:

  129. Critmark Says:

    @Marine Buc

I saw something different with Caleb and USC. I thought the team was much worse than the previous year.

    Statistically as a team:
They scored slightly more PPG in 2023 than Caleb’s 2022 Heisman year.
Passing YPA was up from 2022.
The Rushing game was WAY worse in 2023, down in YPA and almost 40 YPG less.
Their Time of Possession was down because the D sucked.
The D went from a poor 81st in 2022 allowing 29.2 PPG to an abysmal 117th allowing 34.4 PPG in 2023.

Caleb’s stats compared to his Heisman 2022:
    Completion % was up 2%
    YPA was up slightly
    Rating was up 1.6 points

The point is, even with the much poorer roster, Caleb’s numbers were on par with his Heisman year, but the team sucked.

Glass half full or half empty I guess.

Baker averages 4060 yard adjusted for games played when not injured or with the Panthers. Thats 4 years and he has taken 2 out of three teams he played with more than half a season to the playoffs ( all teams he played for a whole season) . That loser was the Panthers who had a worse season this year after he left .

ranked 9th in yardage 8th in TDs

All you do is lose. Don’t even bother coming back with your ranked 20th in scoring nonsense which you know I eat for lunch because it quite ignorantly includes scoring from other sources like field goals and running backs when Qbs score TDs and extra points usually through the air ( where he again is ranked 8)

Like I’ve proved already with your supporting Jameis, Glennon and now pushing Minshoooo 🙂 and even the return of too Old Brady you know NADA about NFL Qbs. Add that to your claim Rbs are not needed in the NFl and we can say its a general NFL deficiency.

Baker is no top five Qb but he certainly isn’t where you haters put him. Thats for sure and no less than Mike Evans just proved you wrong today. Suck it up –

  140. sasquatch Says:

I’d guess that the perception of Baker’s value varies wildly. I’m interested in seeing what number the Bucs are willing to go to. I hope they don’t have to go all the way to 40 per year, but then you have Daniel Jones as a comp, and Baker probably comes out ahead on that.

Learn to read Dom. I do not rate baker top 6 so everything your just wrote was straw and like most of you haters posts a complete miss. The issue of what elite meant bv Evan’s agent was always up to interpretation. I took in all of its context as a solid Qb. Your hater nitwit crowd claimed it was an indication that Evans didn’t want to play with Baker.

That wasn’t agent spin. That was YOUR groups spin. So like it or not Your side is going to eat crow for their claims because Evans did sign with baker being the QB1 target. .

and no we don’t all agree and neither does the coach or the players locker room or the front office that Baker is mediocre. Your delusions don’t make for facts. Neither does the fact that haters have four usernames a piece make your take the consensus.

  145. David Says:

This time of year the National sports media throws out garbage constantly (kind of like most the MSM). They simply hope something sticks so they can say “SEE!!! No one actually does real investigative reporting with credible sources and facts triple checked.

Unfortunately, most the regular media is the same, especially with politics.

    Baker will sign this week.
Winfield will get a long term deal (cheaper to do it than the franchise tag).
Kicker will sign within 2 weeks.
LVD will get a 2 year deal as well.

For the regular pro Baker posters thats just a lie. I’ve seen nobody claim baker is the best QB in the league. However if you start running with what an agent referred to as elite and make claims that evans doesn’t want to play with Baker then you take some egg to the face today.

so i guess to divert that egg the tactic is to claim Baker fans say he is the best Qn in the league as a strawman

Sorry . did not work. As one of the most vocal supporters of Baker I rate baker 10-12. Once he gets to the playoffs I’d rate him top ten. If we are taking about what some of you haters think the standard is – someone who elevates an entire team to super bowl level by themselves there are only two elites – Mahomes and Rodgers.

Now Brady threw 733 times for 4600 yds. his last year went 8-9, got blown out in first game of playoffs and you TARDS think that is great.

Mayfield threw 566 times for 4000 yds, went 9-8, dead last in Rushing, wins 1sr round and he is a bum.

“I think the comments made by Mikes agent elimates teams like the Commanders, Panthers, Titans, and Pats. Mike isn’t going to be strictly a bag chaser. He wants his money obviously but he also values winning and keeping his 1K season streak going. I cant blame him either. For his first six seasons all he knew was losing. He got a taste of winning for 4 years now and doesn’t want to go back to losing. He’s going to end up signing with a team like the Chiefs, Texans, Ravens, Lions, or Bucs”

I never thought that the comments that Mike’s agent made ruled the Bucs out. I still thought they were the favorite to get him. I also didn’t say you thought he was top 5 or 6. I said in my opinion that I think there are only 5-6 true elite QB’s in the NFL.l and he’s not one of them. You get too damn emotional about your guy that you can’t read what I actually said. You were the one claiming he was elite the other day because you thought he was top 12 in the league last year and that if your “top 12 in anything your elite”. By NFL standards he isn’t elite. I would love nothing more than for Baker to be elite. He’s the QB of my team. I’m just not going to lie about it. The facts about his career so far say he’s an average QB

Completely agree. Josh Allen played well enough to be in a Super Bowl or two already. He just ran up against a top 5 all-time QB in Mahomes. The Buffalo team Allen joined and KC team Mahomes joined were obviously not the freak show the Cleveland Browns were and still are. Allen has shown he deserves every bit of the 6 year $258M with $150M guaranteed. Maybe Baker deserves half of that – 3 years $75M guaranteed for $105M. And 4th year option for $45M if Baker deserves it.

The difference between Elite and middle tier (top 12 – top 18) is not 25% of Elite money. At least pay them half.

    I agree.

Actually, if you look at PFF ratings that Capt. Tim likes to quote. Russell Wilson was 18th rated QB last year and Baker Mayfield was 19th rated QB last year.

In fact, if you take again PFF that Capt. Tim likes to quote, Russell Wilson has had a higher rating in every single year than Baker Mayfield.

So according to his logic, we should clearly be bagging Baker and looking at Russell.

  198. Rod Munch Says:

    Tony Marks Says:
Baker averages 4060 yard adjusted for games played when not injured or with the Panthers … ranked 9th in yardage 8th in TDs

    ———

There were only 9 QBs in the NFL last year that started 17 games, and Baker was 9th in yardage – ie, last, and was 8th in TDs … out of 9… but more importantly he was 9th out of 9 when it comes to scoring.

You don’t help your case by quoting numbers like that — unless of course you completely ignore context, while also coming up with arbitrary qualifiers to filter out stats that hurt your cause.

Again, I don’t hate Baker – I’m just not a fan. I think he is, at best, a mediocre QB – and in a career year, he was a mediocre QB, which is backed up by the stats. But he did enough to earn another look and to see if he can improve, assuming you’re not going to pay him like a franchise QB.

  199. mark2001 Says:

Why should he? He played for a big discount last year. His OC isn’t there anymore. His favorite receiver is a FA who deserves to be paid. We call this reality.

    ———–

You just made the case against the Rams trading for Stafford. Cousins and him are very similar players. Baker meanwhile, is very similar to Gardner Minshew, or in Bakers best year, Derek Carr.

Although I’d much rather trade for Justin Fields, and pay him $6m this year and $20m next year, and use that extra money to sign a new center or guard, maybe both, and another WR or TE, plus keep David and Winfield. All of that for a 3rd round pick? Yes, please. Heck, maybe even a 2nd is on the table.

Actually, if you look at PFF ratings that Capt. Tim likes to quote. Russell Wilson was 18th rated QB last year and Baker Mayfield was 19th rated QB last year.

    ——–

Having watched Wilson at the end of the last year — he looked pretty good. He was wayyyy too conservative, which would drive me insane, but in Payton’s offense, even Winston looked conservative, it’s just what Payton wants out of his QBs

But as far as passing games, Wilson looked better than Baker — on average. Wilson still has pinpoint accuracy, and a very good arm, and still is mobile. Baker, when he’s having a good day, is pretty accurate – and while I wouldn’t say he’s mobile, he’s able to move enough to avoid sacks, and Baker did a very good job when he was under pressure. While I didn’t see a ton of Wilson, when I did see him, and he was under pressure and forced to move, he was doing a really good job.

Also, as a qualifiers, I’m talking about Wilson at the end of the year. Early in the year, in that offense, he did not look at all, was slow on his reads, but from what I saw at the end of the year, he had sped up everything dramatically.

From what I saw of both, I’d take Wilson, mainly because he’d be much cheaper, and I’m not really sold on either, so I’ll go the cheap route.

Both are a good fit for this style of offense, so I don’t really see that being an issue.

  207. Marine Buc Says:

We picked Baker off of the scrap heap – maybe we could do it again…

  209. Allbuccedup Says:

March the 13th Russell Wilson will be released something to think about after all he did win a superbowl. Sean Payton is hard to work for old school coach which can be good or bad evidently bad for Wilson. It might not be a bad idea sign Wilson for vet minimum since he will still get 39 mil from the Broncos and use the Mayfield money to sign Brian Burns and of course Winfield with the rest of the money. Then use the draft for OL, Linebacker, DL and Tight End. Sounds like a plan!!!!!!!

  210. Rod Munch Says:

Capt.Tim – If you’re going to list a bunch of previous years stats, then you should include how Baker was literally the worst QB in football from 2021 until the end of the 2022 season. Sort of a big thing to leave out.

He was also on his 4 team in a year last at this time and had to sign a $4m deal, less than most backups get, because he was considered a bust.

Now, with that said, give Baker credit. He bet on himself and he had a career year, by his standards, which meant he finished 18th in QBR and 20th in scoring, ie, middling numbers. But hey, you can win with that when you have the 7th best scoring defense and play in the weakest division in football.

The Bucs should still should have a good defense with Bowles here, and with that you can get by with a middling QB, assuming you don’t overpay.

  253. Rod Munch Says:

History says busts who suddenly have a career year, rarely build on that, they almost always revert back to what they were. However, it’s not 100%. That is why I’m fine with him coming back for another year, to see if he can actually maintain being a middling QB without falling back – or who knows, maybe even improve on his 18th finish in QBR and 20th finish in scoring.

Being average is not a bad thing at all – so long as you’re not paying him like a franchise QB.

  254. Davyboy Says:

Oh Munch you make it way too easy. You said Winston had a better qbr while a Buc than Baker in 2023. Winston’s time with the Bucs had an average rating of 87.4. Last year with the Bucs Baker had a QBR of 94.6. Thats almost 10% better. Substantially better as qbs go.As usual you are wrong. One thing you are right on is Baker had a couple of low years. But as usual you left out the truth. Baker was playing with a completely torn labrum AND a broken shoulder, yeah. As injuries go both are extremely painful for a qb but ol’ Baker kept on playing. If there was a grit and toughness award he would get it. You should do some fact checking before you start texting next time. Who pays you to come up with your stories?? You say Baker has always been a bust. No, he took an 0-16 team who had only won 3 or 4 games in the previous 3 years to 11-5. Bust?? To their first playoff in 100 years. You are out of your mind. Keep writing this stuff and I’ll keep correcting you. As some on here say, Baker will take the Bucs to a superbowl. He is a winner and always has been.

  255. Jack Clark Says:

Russel Wilson is available. Let’s see what he can do with Mike Evans 👀

  256. Rod Munch Says:

^^mtn^^ – Well the big difference between Wilson and Baker is the money, since Wilson should be available at a price that would still let you sign him and probably two additional starters (G/C and a LB, maybe even a S or WR as well) for what Baker costs.

So the question would be, is Baker better than Wilson plus multiple starters?

  257. Bucben61 Says:

Couldn’t have said it better davyboy….course Baker haters hate stats….we got so lucky last off season when he became available for next to nothing

  258. Marky Mark Says:

Most of these first round QBs are busts. Stroud and Love are the exceptions. How do you measure heart and toughness. I agree Caleb is fools gold. Pickens is a bust. Brady, Montana, and the current niners guy were all late rounders.Rehire Bakes and pick a small college star.

  259. Bucben61 Says:

Baker is 7 years younger than Wilson…next you will tell me Aaron Rodgers is better long term than Mahomes….do you haters read what you tyoe

  260. Rod Munch Says:

Davyboy – QBR and the old passer rating you’re quoting are not the same thing.

QBR takes into account things like down and distance, and doesn’t punish you as much for plays like throwing an INT on a hail mary to end a half, etc.

So, for example, it’s 3rd and 9, and you dump off the ball to your RB for 2 yards rather than trying to get the first down. In the old passer rating system, you get credit for the completion, and the old passer rating system way overvalued completion percentage (which is in why in large part why the new stat was created).

Also, in the old passer rating system, as stated above, throwing an INT on a hail mary was counted the same as if you have the ball with 2 minutes left and the game on the line and you throw an INT. QBR takes into account, to a limited agree, the game situation.

The biggest complaint I’ve seen against QBR is that it overvalues the run game, but we’re not talking about running QBs here so it doesn’t matter.

I’ll give you a real world example of why QBR is by far the better stat to use. Take the 2nd Saints game – Baker was absolutely terrible in that game, but got some garbage time stats late in the game. If you look at the old passer rating, you’d think he actually had a good game – he had a 91.6 passer rating, but anyone watching that game knows he stunk when it matter. Well, that same game, his QBR was 19.8, which is terrible, which matched his on-field performance.

  261. geno711 Says:

    Daveboy.

You have your stats mixed up. You are actually quoting passer rating on Baker Mayfield and Jameis Winston.

Your comments are saying instead the QBR stats on these players. The highest QBR ever in a season was Tom Brady in 2007 at 87 rate.

Aaron Rodgers has the highest passer rating ever in 2011 at 122.

For another statistical reference, Russell Wilson, who just was cut today, had a passer rating of 98 last season which was higher than Baker Mayfield’s passer rating of 94.6.

  262. geno711 Says:

I think QBR is a garbage ESPN stat.
Passer rating has been more successful in aligning with the best quarterbacks in the league forever.

Whether Munch thinks QBR is better, it still is less successful at aligning with the best quarterback play in the NFL year in and year out.

  263. CleanHouse Says:

    Get Russell Wilson.
    Let this overhyped bum walk.

    Exactly.

    Assuming he’s interested.

Was interested when the Donkey’s traded for him and meant to follow him more closely, but didn’t have the time to catch many games.

The media up here is pretty tough on QBs, after all, it’s hard to follow the Elway & Manning legacies.

He seems like a bit of an odd duck anyway and as such, an easier target than the slew of QBs that have been thru Denver lately.

Have to say, he handled all the drama fairly well, other than the benching pay cut incident

“We sound ignorant because we want to sign a superbowl winning quarterback for 1M instead of signing a career loser for $20M?? Please explain!!”

Its actually pretty easy toto explain to the non-ignorant. Claiming Wilson is super bowl winning Qb so the bucs should sign him is like saying in the Nba that Westbrook is an all star because he was 7 years ago. Only with Wilson your logic is even WORSE because Wilson won a super bowl

    TEN YEARS AGO

Go get eli manning or Foles then

Sheesh. this is PRECISELY why we call you haters ignorant. You can’t even process a TEN YEAR difference. This is a Qb that has sucked so bad for awhile now that his team is willing to release him and pay him $39 million and take on a 85 million dead cap hit just to be done with him.

Pleaaaaaaaaaase get Licht to sign him to a long term deal. It will be bad as Bucs fan but it just might be offset by laughing at you haters harder than I laugh at Cleveland. A least they signed Deshaun before he had a history of utter failure

What is Russell’s win % the last 5 seasons?

According to the numbers I see

His record with Denver was 11-19

the year before in seattle it was 6-8

so he hasn’t seen a winning record in 3 years

before that was 11-4 and 12-5 so you can do the maths from there

Heres the thing. If you even want to imagine he will return to form at nearly 36 when games that matter are played again his last three years has proven the same thing on him haters say on baker – he has to have a precise setup and scheme.

if you cant replicate that scheme then you get 3 years losing wilson. He was especially awful in 2022 when I saw him get drubbed by Baker with Rams having mostly second stringers due to injuries. He looked like a rookie that didn’t belong. I take it he had a little better season this year so theres that.

Other than hearsay from Deryk Gilmore and Tom Mills, what “insider” is likely to said anything to Dianna Rossini?

It’s pre-free agency period, where agents, sports reporters & 24/7 sports news programs can be of great use for to one another to avoid the dead-period.

Baker Mayfield is an imminent signing, he’s likely just giving superstar, Buc legend, and Super Bowl winning, Mike Evans, his day to enjoy his new contract.

Well now 🙂 before we start crowning you and rod as the great Gm minds you both swear you are one question

When you take the money you would have signed Baker with and get these wonderful additional starters you claim a one year contract with wilson allegedly gives you (with your fellow comrade claims is 1 mill).

Wha happens at the end of the year? I mean according to you and dear rod you don’t save the money you get to spend it on other starters. Mommy and daddy going shopping for LBs and safeties and Wr. shucks throw in a CB while you are at it!

but um what happens if Dear ole wilson doesn’t pan out or even BALLS out and wants the Kaching!! you kinda just hope the money appears in the cap increases to cover for the bucs need to then spend on a Qb? Or you got this killer QB coming up in the draft that you are likely to get? or what the bucs just go on for years with no QB?

I mean these are the things a REAL GM mind has to contend with beyond the comment section wannabees.

  272. ^^mtn^^ Says:

The same could be said for Baker flaming out after a season.

Lots to dissect, but think more in general terms since the guy was just cut.

Is 1mil an arbitrary number? Of course it is.

Wilson is a unique situation, but who said just sign him to 1 year?

By all indications, he’s not slowing down. Do something similar to ME, 3-4 years with the last year or 2 being dummy years.

It’s getting late now sweet pea, don’t want to keep you up past your bed time.

I can tell by all that silliness that me asknig you a simple question GREATLY embarassed you thus the need for deflection

So I’ll press the advaantage by asking another simple question

SInce you are now claiming that you can sign 36 year old Wilson for up to four years for little and nothing exactly what is it that you and roddy boy think Wilson’s contract guarantees him to be paid more past 2024 ?

I mean theres so much silliness in your response I coudl go at but this one is good enough.

No, said a contract like Mike Evans.

The details haven’t come out yet but expect there could be a dummy year or 2 at the end of the 2 year contract so they can push out some of the cap hit.
