Devin White Finds A Team

March 15th, 2024

Philadelphia-bound.

Not a shocker: Devin White is no longer with the Bucs. Per Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, White signed a one-year, prove-it deal with the Eagles yesterday. He could pocket $7.5 million.

For reasons unknown, White peaked in his second year. A Bucs No. 5 overall draft pick in 2019, White played better than Ray Lewis in the playoffs as the Bucs won the Super Bowl for the 2020 season.

Every year White’s play declined until last year he was a healthy scratch by Bucs coach Todd Bowles at Green Bay.

White also was famously called out by Bucs legend Warren Sapp for loafing against Baltimore on Thursday Night Football in 2022. In the same game, White got absolutely owned by Crows center Tyler Linderbaum. It was freaking sad, man.

White did himself no favors demanding to be traded by the Bucs a couple of months later because he couldn’t hustle Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht for Roquan Smith money.

If Joe’s memory serves, wasn’t White glossing Eagles players on Instagram once as if he was trying to grease the wheels to play with them?

Guess White got his wish.

    Good

  2. jarrett Says:

I’M GOING TO MISS D WHITE

    IN JASON LIT WE TRUST

  3. Derek Says:

It’s UP TO 7.5 million with incentives. Probably a base of 4-5 Million

  4. cmurda Says:

With D White, I’ll still think first about that SB run. before anything else. He was utterly dominant. Not sure what happened to him but maybe a change of scenery will get him going. Best of luck to him.

  5. Tony Says:

GOODBYE! Let them deal with the drama queen. I always said I would’ve drafted Josh Allen over him that year, too!

  6. CleanHouse Says:

it’s a shame they couldn’t wrangle this guy into a great mindset.

A lot of the best and most talented players have huge ego’s thats just the way it is.

Think Phil Jackson with Dennis Rodman. Now you may say D White is no Rodman and thats fair but I believe it’s a failure of coaching and management.

  7. Steven007 Says:

Only 92.5 million less than he was hoping for. Good job, Devin!

  8. T. McGee Says:

Great story during the Super Bowl run but can’t play pass coverage.

  9. Simeon4HOF Says:

Dude ain’t been the same since the Erin Andrew’s interview on MNF

  10. Simeon4HOF Says:

*Andrew’s. Ty for the Super Bowl beat tho. Go get live in philly

  11. jeffrey becker Says:

eagles fans are so happy too haha, like every post on theathletic was ‘we’re gonna be amazing’

  12. Simeon4HOF Says:

*Andrews took his legs or something lol

  13. I remember 21 Says:

This is the guy that wanted top of the position money, $20M per year. The guy who balked at $12M for this year. Now he’s playing for kicker money (assuming the base of his deal is in the $4-5M range). We will never forget the SB run, but even that is bittersweet because it’s a reminder of what could’ve been. People always talk about the Brady influence, what about the LVD influence? Is there a better ILB mentor/ teammate you could ask for in todays game? If so, there’s not many. Yet White seems to have learned NOTHING from him. Nothing about how to play the game, nothing about how to handle business, nothing about how to act. It’s really a shame. But this was obviously the right move. I wonder if now that White is off the team, we’ll hear a little bit more of what went on behind the scenes this season. Ira & the Joes have vaguely mentioned some added contentiousness that hasn’t been reported on yet.

  14. Oxycondomns Says:

Should fit right in on that eagles defense

  15. EternalSon Says:

    Relieved.

    Wishing white well!

  16. BangkokBuc Says:

Bought his jersey instead of David’s
    What a terrible decision

  17. Buchead Says:

I’m sorry that it ultimately didn’t work out, I’m glad that we didn’t re-sign him, and I wish him great success – so far as it doesn’t stand in our way. Above all, I am grateful for his contribution to our 2020 Super Bowl team – we couldn’t have done it without him.

  18. Tbbucs3 Says:

White still showed some flashed last season….he got off to a strong start then disappeared for much of the season….

Still a very effective blitzer…a change a scenery should be better for him as ut appears he was mentally checked out….but if he was able to let Bucs fans get to him last season wait till he gets a taste of Philly fans

  19. Dave Pear Says:

Too bad Devin played under “don’t hold them accountable” Bowles. Toad could coach Derrick Brooks into playing like Matt McCoy.

  20. Leopold Stotch Says:

Good luck, thanks for the help with the superbowl. Won’t miss the last two years tho.

  21. Oneilbuc Says:

Devin White was hurt last year and no one gave him a pass for it . This is what I be talking about when it comes to bucs fans. Brady played bad in 2022 and everyone gave him a pass because of his divorce. In the same year Devin White lost his dad and his play on the field was impacted because of it and no one gave him a pass or even mentioned him losing his dad. In 2021 Baker Mayfield got injured and he played anyway and people still give him a pass for that year and that’s ok with me . But Devin White was injured the whole year and every one knew it but he didn’t get the same pass Baker got or Brady. This is why I tell y’all it’s not about hate it’s about if you give one guy a excuse and it may be a legitimate excuse then you have to give it to every player. You can’t pick and choose on who you give excuses for even if it is a legitimate excuse. Just like when I bring up Jamies you guys call me a Jamies fan but I noticed how no one cared about the running game until Brady came here and now Baker Mayfield which every quarterback needs a running game. You see it’s not about being a fan of a player I’m a bucs fan before a fan of a player. To me ain’t no one player is bigger than the team. So I will be fair even with Baker if he plays well wich I really hope he does I will give him his props. But if he plays bad I will say he played bad but I’m hoping he plays well because he’s on the bucs and I’m rooting for him this season just like David and another player on the bucs roster. Go Bucs!!!

  22. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Devins got one thing you cannot teach. Speed. He’s fast. Once he settles into the rite scheme, he could go kattie bar the doors. Time will tell, and I wish him well.

  23. Nick Says:

Devin White didn’t get the same pass that others got because he is selfish, arrogant and is only out for number one. It’s as simple as that, really.

  24. I remember 21 Says:

    @Oneilbuc

If you want to make that argument about Baker & Jameis, that’s your prerogative. But to throw Brady in that comparison is sacrilege & ludicrous. Yes the guy had a down year, and yes he had outside issues, but that was after TWENTY TWO seasons of excellence!! White had TWO good seasons (an excellent playoffs at the end of the second mind you), an ok third season, and two mediocre seasons at the end. He started going downhill after season TWO!! There is no comparison to be made there. Head got big, saw dollar signs, bowles refused to rein him in, and that’s where we are today. Give the guy his credit, just make sure it’s the amount he’s earned.

  25. Buc king Says:

Honestly he can ride his horse into old Town road never saw a player miss so many wide open sacks.

  26. heyjude Says:

Wishing Devin the best of luck with the Eagles. It may be a better fit for him. He didn’t seem happy here for a while, but still has the potential to do better.

  27. Hodad Says:

Thought he’d be the next Ray Lewis. Turned out more like Jerry Lewis.

  28. Mike C Says:

Oneilbuc, you pick some weird cats to defend, Jamis now this guy?

  29. adam from ny Says:

this whole lsu, “i ride a horsie” thing isn’t really gonna fly on market street in philly either…lol

  30. adam from ny Says:

maybe he can dress in an armor suit, while holding a javelin, and go bolting down dale mabry in the middle of the night……

but that crap ain’t gonna fly on the streets of philly…he’s no rocky balboa 🙂

  31. adam from ny Says:

    truth be told tho…

he was a real beast for us for a hot minute in 2020…

i thought we had the next lawrence taylor

  32. Oneilbuc Says:

Mike C. You just didn’t get my point bro look I don’t know none of these guys personally . So my point is you have to call it like you see it you can’t give this guy a pass but than the other guy it can be the same situation but you don’t give him a pass. Devin White was hurt and that’s a fact that’s not a opinion but a fact last year and he tried to play hurt just like Baker did in 2021 but most people gave him a pass. Again I just see the bias for surtain players that’s all !!

  33. Darin Says:

Yep Josh Allen shoulda woulda.coulda. I hope licht learned his lesson. The signs were there on that one. If they say they want to be the highest paid ever before playing a game drop back and punt, licht.

  34. darengibo Says:

Brady and Baker didn’t come with the me first, arrogant, selfish, loafing, poor attitude as Devin White. Apples and Oranges.

Had Devin been more like Lavonte and his ultimate team first mentality, DW would have gotten same “pass”

    Enjoy those Philly fans.

  35. Drunkinybor Says:

He can ride his pony all the way there. Freak athlete who gets lost in coverage assignments. Seems like once we got a Guy in that just did the designed role defense played a lot better.

  36. Tampa Stadium Says:

Thank for 2020. But you sucked after.

  37. dmatt Says:

    Darengibo,

You are on point. Brady n Mayfield weren’t demanding, selfish, n arrogant with a mutiny on the bound type attitude. Lavonte told DWhite to be patience n tried to influence, encourage, n mentor him to no avail. Same as when AB became selfish on the sideline n MIke Evans tried talking him down to no avail. We don’t need me me me type players. AB tried using the injury excuse to justify his wild antics. We live in a copy cat league.

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Take your filly’s to Philly…..

  39. Todd Says:

After his agent fee and taxes (Florida has no taxes, Devin), this young man will net about $3.3MM. You got what you asked for last year, Devin. Congrats.

    #premature-ebi*chulation

  40. Pickgrin Says:

    Bye Bye Horsie boy….

Hopefully we at least get a 6th rd comp pick.

Lesson learned – never EVER spend top 10 draft capitol on an ILB!

  41. Zman Says:

It’s a good fit for him and a deal for philly. Change of scenery often helps.
Once again not a good first rounder by JL. I didn’t like it at the time and now we let go a player is his prime years. That is why a team rarely drafts a LB that early.

As for White playing better tha RayLew for a SB stretch is ridiculous. Never, ever say he played better than RayLew. That’s fan Boi talk. Yes, he played well, as expected for the number 5 pick, but never in the same class as Lewis.

  42. TomBucsFan Says:

Thank God, he can go blow coverage for them now! Go Bucs, comp pick incoming?

  43. G- Buc Says:

Not sure how DW lack of production is the product of coaching.

    See KJ Britt and LVD.

  44. BobbyuBucsFan Says:

    by Felicia…

  45. Beeej Says:

Guy needed a change of scenery, wish him the best

  46. Big Red Says:

Odd move by the Eagles, they don’t blitz their LBs.

  47. WillieG Says:

If the Bucs play the Eagirls in the playoffs, White will have 21 tackles and a forced fumble. The Bucs will win because he will also be out of position on 4 TD plays.

  48. TDTB Says:

The way to have salvaged him was to play him like Parsons and let him get after the QB. He has the same tool box as Parsons, that just didn’t fit Todd’s defensive plans.

  49. Aceofaerospace Says:

    Let him eat cake.

  50. Keimosabe Says:

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he has a pro bowl type season. Guy has all the tools just couldn’t get his head on straight here for some reason. Wish him all the best and thank him for the super bowl! Go bucs!!!!

  51. Joe in Michigan Says:

Oneilbuc makes excuses for Devin White, saying he was hurt, yet slams Baker Mayfield every chance he gets…Oneilbuc: Was Baker hurt, too? Are you the Bucs team physician, or have insider knowledge of the medical reports?

  52. Cobraboy Says:

    No White, No Lombardi.

    Thanks for that, Mr. White.

    Best of luck.

  53. Danr Says:

I firmly believe his role changed and he hated it. He was being asked to blitz less, cover more. And once he was no longer in a position to get as many tfl and sacks he got an attitude problem

  54. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Good luck captain loaf. Thanks for the 3 game stretch in the 2020 playoffs. No more drama.

  55. Bowles4President Says:

His foundation did a lot for supporting foster families in Tampa. If tempted to question his character, keep that in mind.

  56. 941Boltsfan Says:

Couldn’t of gone to a team that I enjoy cheering against more good for him

  57. Big Red Says:

Devin White was voted team captain. He played and walked around with a big stick. You gotta be if you want to be a young leader. I think the issue was the fans and social media. Playing injured never helps. Ego inflated from success and superbowl but ego is natural. I would’ve liked to see Devin White stay in town, personally. But if we can nab a Clowney, Reddick, I’ll be happy with that until we have them dropping back in zone to cover a TE, RB, or slot.

  58. Buc mx fan Says:

First of all, thank you Devin for your contributions in the 2nd SB,
In my opinion this is a win win for both sides, Devin has the talent, may be this will be the learning he needs to became the best version of himself.
At the same time, Bucs don’t have to deal with a Diva type of player he was this past season.

  59. Buc1987 Says:

    Good riddance.

    Waste of a roster spot.

  60. Jerseybuc Says:

Perfect fit. It’s either sadness or euphoria for Philly fans. They were SB bound but my end of year none is my eagle friends wanted to join me on my trip down to Ray Jay. Devin fits right in. Either splash play or out of position and giving up hige yardage. Can’t wait to see them find out the truth on this guy.

  61. William Walls Says:

Devin White: the Jameis Winston of linebackers.

  62. ChiBuc Says:

Ironic how both of our playoff opponents are grabbing buccaneer free agents. If we apply the logic often employed on this site…”I trust the opinions of players, coaches, GM, stadium hot dog slingers, etc over [insert poster’s name here],” then there may be some cause for concern. Hmmmm. But hey, we’re maintaining status quo. JL, it’s time to look outside of your family for a mate. A 9-8 division championship isn’t that strong in a weak division, which btw is making moves to improve, not just maintain status quo

  63. DBS Says:

Let’s see. He was so great he got a 1 year deal. Diva wanted out he is gone. Hope he is happy now.

  64. Mike C Says:

Oneilbuc, His social media BS is why people didn’t give him a break, and everyone gave Brady a break because he was 45, Playing in the NFL!!!! Everyone could see that it was slipping away from the greatest to play the game and they felt bad for him(the divorce certainly didn’t help) , DW is a jack @$$ that only a jack @$$ would defend.

  65. Mike C Says:

And your hate for Brady is well documented, so I am going to “call it as I see it ” you are a hater! Funny enough all the guys you dog look a certain way and they guys you support look a different way….. hmmmm wonder what that is about???🤔

  66. Mike C Says:

And before you give your idiotic response, my favorite players are LVD AWJ and Mike, non of those guys look like me.

  67. h Says:

Spot on ONEILBUC you AINT LYING.

Thanks for bringing us our 2nd ring Devin. That SUPERBOWL INT in Endzone SEALED IT!!!!

  68. gotbbucs Says:

    Bye.

  69. teacherman777 Says:

    Compensation pick?

I love Britt. He crushes guards and center head on!

But get him off the field on 3rd down!

I want a dime package with only David as our LB on 3rd down!

    We need a “money backer”

A safety who is badass in the box, and who can cover RB’s and TE’s.

I don’t want 2 linebackers on the field on 3rd down!

Put an extra safety as our 2nd LB!

  70. Jmarkbuc Says:

Dude couldn’t tackle, except to grab by the shoulder pads

    Dude couldn’t cover

Dude couldn’t execute his assignments on the defense

Had a couple great playoff games, but that’s about it.

    Bye Dude.

  71. Mike Says:

If they use him as a situational pass rusher, he will be a real problem.

  72. Tony Says:

    @teacherman777

I’d take Payton Wilson or Cedric Gray.

  73. Tony Says:

    @WilliamWalls

The Michael Clayton of WRs, too!

  74. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This looks suspiciously like 2023 tampering.

  75. ChiBuc Says:

    D. White is an interesting case study. From LVD’s heir apparent, stud sb/pro bowl yr, to public enemy 1 by fan base.. All the accolades currently being said about Winfield, were once being said about D. White at the start of 2021.

I see both sides on this. Fans deserve to be annoyed by his bad play, disinterest, and poorly played “negotiations.” It/he bugged me, but it kind of reads like a mental disorder.

I also see how Todd’s defensive philosophy shift did no suit White. He thrived with big DLs eating up blocked, man coverage, and him running like the wild horse he imagines he is to the QB. This leads me to think he will do well in Philly.

We all saw how he pouted and checked out when he was used differently (coverage/contain) and for failing to get a raise. It was not gonna work here, so good bye

  76. Matlok727 Says:

That’s where he said he wanted to be for a whole year. Let him be there. I hope he plays just like he played the last few games of the year.

  77. Bucco Bruce14 Says:

Good riddance, So much potential, but his ego was bigger! Will be cut by the Eagles mid-season.

  78. Simeon4HOF Says:

Thankful for his role the Super Bowl year though. He did get live back then

  79. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

    Devin White:

    PROS-
    Amazing straight-line speed!

    CONS-
Poor tackler, takes bad angles, can’t shed blocks, arm tackles, selfish attitude, locker room headcase, freelancing on the field, poor in coverage, takes plays off, poor lateral adjustment, slow at reading plays, disappears for long stretches, unwilling to accept coaching or mentoring.

    Have I missed anything?

How can so many of you still pull for this guy? He wanted to leave YOUR team to play with Philthadelphia of all teams, a year ago!?!? He finally got his wish. He quit on YOUR team multiple times in multi games! Ray Lewis?!…get outta here with that!

  80. Kidfloflo Says:

I for one do not wish him to play well! He could have continued to play well here! Would have gotten paid, but chose to whine and ask to be traded and now is on the hated Eagles in the same conference as us, so he is the enemy and hope he continues to trend downward

  81. Oneilbuc Says:

Devin White was hurt last year but I get it you guys call everyone a hater when they speak facts about a player who y’all love so much but at the same time you hope he fails?? That’s the real definition of haten !! I wish him all the best until he plays the bucs.

  82. BucsBeBack (Artist formally known as: BringBucsBack) Says:

O’Neil, was Devin injured in 2022? He was overrated then, too.

  83. Bo Says:

Not one “…and the horse you rode in on” comment? Do better, Bucs haters/fans.

  84. infomeplease Says:

DW got a ring here and raised the Lombardi high above his head. Most NFL players will never have that experience! Too bad he peaked at such an early age. He did play great during that Superbowl run. Not so much lately. Perhaps brain trauma from all the hits. He will always have a place here in Buc history.

  85. Oneilbuc Says:

BucsBe. In 2022 he was playing good until his dad died but I guess that’s reason for his play dropping in 2022. But again Brady gets a pass for the same year for going through a divorce. This is what I be talking about why do you guys give surtain players passes but not others. And I know in our country now days Dad’s has no value at all so that’s why it’s hard for some people to give Devin White a pass for losing his dad . Without Devin White in 2020 we don’t win a superbowl. Remember Brady threw 3 picks and our defense stepped including Devin White on that last play against Rogers and it was a one one play. So I wish Devin White the best until he plays the bucs and we don’t have to hate every player that leaves the team because of the business side of the sport.
