Former Cleveland Defensive Coordinator Raves About Baker Mayfield, Thinks He Could Have Won The Super Bowl With Him

March 15th, 2024

Big Baker Mayfield fan.

Outside of Baker Mayfield’s agent and his wife, Joe found the happiest person  in America that Mayfield re-signed a three-year contract that could pay him more than $100 million.

Gregg Williams only was head coach of the Browns for eight games in Mayfield’s rookie year, 2018. He took over for a fired Hue Jackson.

Williams had a 5-3 record to finish 2018 and the entire coaching staff got the book after the season.

Williams is such a Mayfield fan that he told the “Come Get Some” podcast this week that the Browns would have been Super Bowl-bound with Mayfield had Williams remained as Browns coach.

“I’m so happy. I’m so happy,” Williams said of Mayfield signing with the Bucs. Mayfield “is one of my all-time favorites. I believe in all my heart we could have won a championship had I stayed at Cleveland instead of heading out.

“I am so proud with how he has proven himself time after time after time from high school to college from college to the NFL and now within the NFL.

“Hey, come get some Bake. I’m very happy for him.”

Joe is starting to sense a pattern here. Defensive guys like Mayfield. We know Bucs coach Todd Bowles loves him. So what’s going on?

Is it Mayfield’s linebacker mentality? Is it his knack for mixing things up with defensive players, his willingness to lower a shoulder and plow through people to fight for a first down? Williams was an architect of the BountyGate scandal.

You don’t see or hear of too many defensive coaches who like quarterbacks. And two prominent defensive guys are now known Mayfield boys. And throw ex-linebacker John Harbaugh into the mix.

Just seems unusual to Joe.

We get it. Baker is the Bees Knees.

  2. Buc king Says:

I like to see baker prove some of yall right..the money invested no choice but to back him..I would of talked to rus Wilson gave him vet minimum and used the rest of the money to enhance the team.

If Wilson looked bad went with Trask..
All year I’ll be comparing rus and bake..
Will see who.got the best buy

  3. Hodad Says:

Well it’s his team now. No time will be wasted this offseason with a phoney QB competition. Hopefully this allows us to hit the season running. Glad the distraction is gone.

  4. Rover Says:

Sometimes I wonder if folks really know what a super bowl is. (yea I know the guy won one as a coordinator) but really. They arent handing those things out like beads at the mardi gras parade. Thats a tall order for the best of the best. These podcasts eventually are going to get banned from society if people keep speaking without context and decorum. Go Bucs!

  5. Farmer Says:

Baker had 19TDs, 8INTs, a 109.6 rating and 2254 yards in the 8 games under Williams at the back end of the 2018 season which for a rookie under a regime change half way through the season is insane. 2019 with Kitchens ruined the trajectory of Bakers career, it really isn’t a surprise with how Baker played under Williams that he thought they could win the SB.

You brought up a lot of things to think about, and thank you for the reminder about Bounty-gate. I don’t have any respect for Sean Payton or Gregg Williams, and any others involved. They are dirty. They targeted Favre and Warner – administered by Williams. Coaches that should have been banned from being in the NFL in my opinion. “The tiger cannot change its stripes.” Luckily our Buc coaches are not like that and never were.

  7. OHBucFan Says:

Right on Farmer. Williams turned that team around in a half season with Baker at the helm. Williams was also a college qb. Probably sees a bit of himself in Mayfield.

  8. Stan says Says:

Check the record over this passed year I said Baker was the guy to read this team. I know as much about football as the rest of the keyboard warriors out there. I just noticed Baker had that chip on his shoulder. Did he make mistakes yes, but he’s ours now thank God. I love the way he plays period. BUCS BABY

  9. heyjude Says:

Agree with Stan. Baker is our guy, and the majority love him on and off the field. We are lucky to have him.

  10. Bucsmarley Says:

Hopefully he decides to play the whole game and not just the 4th qtr

Correct except that on passer rating you can’t simply add up the passer rating from the 8 games and divide by 8. You have to look at drop backs for those 8 games. His passer rating was actually a strong 102.5.

Very strong stuff overall. Thanks for taking a look.

The Browns owner is the reason why the Browns have not won a superbowl. One bad decision after another. Williams was on a prove it interim basis. He proved it and was dumped. Baker was on a prove it deal and was rewarded. Differences in owners.

  13. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Buy a team and then you can “do” whatever you want

  14. Farmer Says:

@geno711 my bad, thanks for correcting.

  15. Marky Mark Says:

The reason why Baker did not get started till the 4th quarter was Canales fault. He insisted on “establishing the run”. When that did not work he got desperate and put the ball and game in Bakers hands. Bucs would have been 11-6 if the D could have held the lead Baker got in desperation mode in Falcons 1 and Texans. Coen will be more free flowing like he was at Kentucky and Rams. Pass will establish the run.

  16. Beeej Says:

I suspect that story the other day about Bowles and Canales played a large part

  17. Bucnjim Says:

Happy to have Mayfield! One of the few QB’s that aren’t head cases or drama queens. Not sure why so many modern NFL starting QB’s are such big freaking babies! Every time the get touched they’re looking for a flag and freak out when one isn’t thrown.

  18. JD Still Says:

I hate to rain on the lovefest going on here but let’s pause briefly for a reality check, How many career ,sub .500 win , journeyman quarterbacks have ever gotten any team to the SuperBowl ? You like the guy, think he’s a dude with moxie, that’s fine, enjoy, but , he barely got us to .500 in the weakest division in pro football, if you’re expecting anything more than what you’ve seen already , Sorry , but, you’re just setting yourselves up for disappointment.

  19. Jonzee Says:

Could have won this year tio. Canalas got too conservative against the Lions. We should have beat them by 14pts… We matches uo well against San Fran and could have dog fought with KC… Run it back Bucs…. Let’s goooo!!!!

  20. Lol Says:

I haven’t seen much of anything to say that Baker could win a superbowl tbh. This last season seemingly was the 1st where he actually took care of the ball well.

But as we all have seen every once in a while a subpar/meh qb can win with a great team around them. Flacco, Fowles, Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Eli Manning, etc..

But if Baker continues to improve and the talent level is high around him then the Bucs could be contenders in a weak conference

  21. pmarcello Says:

Baker is every bit as talented as any of the other young gunslingers. He has gifts and will use them this year as he .leads the BUCS on a deep, deep [maybe trophy deeo run! No Worry’s. No regression

  22. Aaron Says:

If he could of he would have last year lol but did he no so let’s see what he does this year “if” even makes the playoffs never as good as the first year

  23. Dave Pear Says:

No way. Oneilgirl and Booss assure us that Mayfield is garbage. Of course they would know more than NFL professionals.

  24. Capt.Tim Says:

    Well, no sh*t.

The Browns ownership and front office is filled with idiots. I dont need too prove that statement. Its common knowledge.
Any team that would trade for the brain dead deshaun watson is idiot infested.

Baker Mayfield will win a Superbowl. Deshaun will never win a superbowl.

And Mayfield Win the Superbowl with Tampa. Not Cleveland.
You NEVER let a QB with his leadership and talent leave your team.
Not if winning is your End Goal.

I mean, Hes no Kyle Trask, but hes up there! Lol ( couldnt help myself)

  25. Esteban85 Says:

Man the Baker hate around here is palpable. Reminds me of triggered lefties with their TDS

  26. Shane Callahan Says:

NFL employees love Baker. Actual football players and/or coaches love Baker. Twerps that have never played the game don’t for some reason. I’m no longer going to sweat it. Go Bucs!

  27. Shane Callahan Says:

Stefanski can’t say it right now, but he also knows he could’ve won a Super Bowl with Baker if he hadn’t been forced by his “non-football guy” owner to get Watson.

  28. tgoodwin Says:

GR8 POSTS – Yep Baker coulda n woulda n shoulda -but, dummy owner got the ‘hots’ 4 Deshawn = YIKes=YUKSVILLE- he LOST OUT BAKER N BUCS R SUPERSTARS N WILL GO GET MULTIPLE SUPERBOWL RINGS-LET BAKER BAKE!~

  29. Gipper Says:

Baker Mayfield was the single best thing that has happened to the resurrected Cleveland Browns. The worst thing was unloading Mayfield for Demassage Watson. The Browns didn’t just unload Baker they ruined his market value my signing Watson before they traded Mayfield. In the process the Browns ended up screwing themselves. But that is just the way the Haslam Family ownership works. They are the only people that could make Cleveland long for the days of Art Modell.

  30. Ko Kiefer Says:

    Gregg Williams slicks wayyyyyyy back

  31. Shane Callahan Says:

I’m really digging some of you guys. Let’s go Bucs!!!

  32. Marky Mark Says:

I would like to thank.all the reality check people. You are just motivating Baker..

  33. Marky Mark Says:

The contributors list has gotten smaller since Baker got signed because the outsider non bucs fan agitators have left.
