Todd Bowles’ Best Move Was Believing In Baker Mayfield

January 14th, 2024

Todd Bowles saved Baker Mayfield’s career. And Mayfield paid Bowles back by maybe saving Bowles’ job with an NFC South title. (Photo courtesy of Tampa Bay Buccaneers.)

No matter what, Joe is geeked that the Bucs are a playoff team, an NFC South champ again (third-straight year — a franchise first).

How did the Bucs get there? It wasn’t a suffocating defense. It wasn’t an overpowering run game. You can make a very strong argument that it is because of how offensive coordinator Dave Canales resurrected Baker Mayfield’s career.

And Mayfield is here because of Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

The Bucs needed a quarterback. Mayfield was basically thrown on the NFL scrap heap after he flamed out in Carolina last season. Sure, he showed signs of life in Los Angeles but unless Matt Stafford was traded, Mayfield wasn’t going to start.

Likewise in Baltimore, the Crows were interested in Mayfield because Lamar Jackson might have held out after he had the franchise tag slapped on him.

The Bucs were the lone team to give Mayfield a real chance at starting. And that was in large part due to the relationship Bowles and Mayfield forged before the 2018 NFL Draft when Bowles coached the Jets.

And boy, has Bowles’ faith in Mayfield paid off. Mayfield is a top-10 quarterback my many metrics. Here’s how:

Touchdowns: 7th (28).
Passing yards: 9th (4,044).
Passing yards under pressure: 2nd (1,043).
Touchdown-to-interception ratio: 10th (2.8).

(Joe will add that only a dozen teams have a better record than the Bucs.)

Simply put, it’s hard for Joe to believe that the Bucs wouldn’t re-sign Mayfield this offseason. Top-10 quarterbacks who lead their teams to a division crown can’t exactly be found on the sub line at the Publix deli.

If not for Mayfield’s stellar season, would Bowles even be the Bucs coach right now?

Congrats to baker kicking those three field goals against Carolina in that do or die game. What a leg on that guy. Really saved our season with that clutch performance.

  9. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Probably true assessment. Mayfield was the affordable option, but they wouldn’t have brought him in if Bowles didn’t think Baker had some gas left in the tank. Glad it worked out for both of them. Hard to see them passing on re-signing unless his agent gets $50m stupid.

  10. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Anyone want to bet that Jalen’s completion percentage will be ALOT better than 61% Monday night. Oh for man on man coverage? Isn’t everyone healthy?

  11. CleanHouse Says:

    Actually Joe,

I once met Evander Holyfield on line for chicken fingers at the Publix Deli, so you never know!

  12. Bubby Says:

Solid, but not great season. Every other team in the nfc south will get better next year, whether its players, coaching or both. Will we get better by hanging on to the bread crumbs of going all in?

  13. BucaneroJim Says:

But who did we play? Do the ratings reflect the quality of opponents on the schedule.

To start the year the Eagles were rated at the number 1 hardest schedule. Bucs rated at 22 strength of schedule. Saints 31 and Falcons 32.

Derek Carr stats are pretty close at 13th for 2023.

  14. Buccos Says:

I like this matchup for the Bucs. It’s certainly better than one and done against Dallas. We beat Philly a couple years ago in a very similar situation. But Baker will need his A game to get the job done. Our defense should Russ to the occasion

  15. NE Fan Says:

Worbel a better choice for Monday. He has rhe same playoff record as Baker and he can run faster. This way Baker can avoid losing future monies.

  16. Joseph C Simmons Says:

It all comes down to the Glazers. If they’re not happy with the results they’ve been getting from the Bowles coaching staff, everybody is getting fired, and we’re probably starting over with one of the many quarterbacks in the upcoming draft.

If the Glazers like the progress they are seeing (and, despite the mediocre record, I really do see a way better team than last year’s) then undoubtedly they’ll resign Mayfield to probably a Carr-like contract.

  17. Glass Half Full Guy Says:

I appreciate what Mayfield has brought to the team. The team as a whole out-performed expectations. New QB, New OC, newly revamped o-line, etc. Having a winning record, regardless of strength of opponent, was seemingly out of reach, let alone winning the division for the rd straight year.

I’m not going to get carried away with the “inconsistent play” of Mayfield because this is a team sport. Not to make excuses but having no productive running game and still forcing it left Mayfield with far too many 3rd and long situations for any reasonable person to think could lead to a high success rate or “consistency”. Obvious pasimg down against a solid pass rush and decent coverage makes it hard for ANY QB to operate.

However Monday turns out, if you compare this team from camp to now, it should foster some optimism. Canales will learn and grow. We have a couple of young studs on D. Bowles had a full off season and season to operate without the spectra of BA over his shoulder and he has also shown improvement and made very few coaching.errors compared to last year.

If we can keep Evans, Winfield, Mayfield, etc and add a couple of pieces via draft, trade or FA, my “glass” will be “mostly full” for next season.

    Go Bucs!!!

  18. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tony

How do you think Baker will play on Monday night?

    I hope he doesn’t fall short…

  20. Let em bake Says:

Aj brown was huge in the first game. He’s out. It’d be nice if Bucs had mike Tyson as a pass rusher. He could bite jalens hurt finger.😊

  21. Beeej Says:

“Passing yards under pressure: 2nd (1,043)”

I deduce from that he’s under pressure a LOT

  22. NE Fan Says:

    Really Joe, that warrants moderation?

  23. BillyBucco Says:

Let all the arguing about Baker END and let’s play football.
He will write his story and it better be a “heady” showing because that’s the position these playoff games come down to.
Watched the replay of KC and Miami, and Mahomes made all the difference.
Even Andy Reid said he was the difference.
He took the easy throws and “Identified” the one on one matchups.
If Baker can check it down MORE to White and attack this Philly defense “horizontally” they will suffer with those big D Lineman.
Make them run to the side as much as possible and use your TEs in the middle.
Take your shots when they suck up.
If Baker can’t do the simple things then he doesn’t belong.
If he can, we will win this game 34-17.
If he can’t this is a low scoring game.
    Time to MAN UP!!!!

We can see which fanboi wrote this article.
Blowles was forced to choose Mayfield because after one idiotic season of being our head coach he handed the GOAT his ONLY losing season in his ENTIRE 20+ year career he had to save his job.
How much you want to bet if Brady had atleast Cornales as his OC last year the Bucs would’ve gone better than 8-9?
They didn’t bother developing Brady’s successor and went with the lazy choice.
All those stats are smoke and mirrors they don’t show the true story. After 6 years in the league Baker is 42-47 all time for a reason and it wasn’t all because of the coaches and players around him.
He has hit his ceiling with the Bucs and if they sign him to a long term contract then they consign themselves to a record just like Baker’s, win some lose some.
Teams who develop their high drafted qb are the ones who go on to become winning franchises.
The Bucs in their entire 47 year history have NEVER done that and look at their record.
Blowles has doomed the Bucs to continue in his record as a head coach because he refused to take the lumps necessary when starting a 1st time starting qb because he has no foresight, only coaching not to lose

I can see that you still suffer from mental erect!le dysfunction.

The Blue Pill didn’t help you Tony? Your brain still can’t get it up. That’s a shame. Increase the dosage.

You were the first person to bring up other people such as myself, Rod, etc.

We live rent free in your head, and you project that on to others. Classic Tony.

I’m fine with Baker being our quarterback for next year.

I’ve stated that Baker has earned being our quarterback next year with his production and that I want him as our quarterback and that we need a workhorse back (I’m not convinced about White between the tackles) to compliment with White like a Kamara/Ingram combo and a monster at center to replace Hainesy who has played atrociously.

The Bucs need a back like Wiscon’s 6’2”, 245 lb, 4.4 forty running back in Braelon Allen who is #34 on Bruce Feldman’s Freak List. Think Derrick Henry or Bo Jackson or Jim Brown.

If the Bucs can draft Braelon Allen at RB and the #1 center in Sedrick Van Pran who is a 6’4” 310 lb mauler out of Georgia then Baker and the Bucs offense will be DANGEROUS next year.

Please take the Blue Pill, Tony.

Your problem is also math, Tony.

I said that Baker is more hurt going into this week with the 2 injuries the Bucs reported on the injury report for the playoff game against the Eagles. You can literally read that on the Bucs official website.

You said I was wrong and that Baker wasn’t more injured going into this week’s Eagle’s game vs last weeks game against Carolina and that players and coaches don’t lie about injuries, which is super gullible for you to believe.

You know that a rib injury for the Panthers’ game last week = 1 injury, right Tony?

You know that a rib injury and an ankle injury for the Eagle’s game this week = 2 injuries, right Tony?

    Please take the Blue Pills!

I cited NFL Next Gen Stats from the Carolina game last week where Baker played injured and didn’t complete a pass for over 10 yards and that I was concerned about that happening again this week against the Eagles and if that happens then the Bucs will struggle to win and you argued with me and called me names.

Everybody on this site would be thankful if you took the Blue Pills and cured your mental erecti!e dysfunction, Tony.

Please do it for us rational fans who are not on the fringe like you Tony with your shrine to Baker and David who has a voodoo doll of Baker.

  31. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    -Billy Bucco

Your offensive game plan for the Bucs against the Eagles is spot on for how the Bucs can beat the Eagle’s defense.

Stinnie, Hainsey and Mauch are our weak link on offense and Baker is injured. Because of that you must plan accordingly. Quick horizontal plays to your playmakers in space and tire out the strength of the Eagles defense which is their front 4 is a great plan.

Fingers crossed 🤞 that Canales plans it, Bowles allows it, Canales calls it and Baker executes it.

Running at the Eagles as Canales has said is a key to our success is really the final nail in our coffin and the death of our season.

  32. JA Says:

    Hey Marks …
Below is my response to your previous attack on my knowledge about and, like all here, subjective opinion of Baker Mayfield.
I mostly read Joe’s site for laughs, yet congruently it is refreshing to see we have some diehard Bucs fans in this snowbird invasion zone.
    GO BUCS!!
But you, Tony, stand out as the most myopically skewed fan of Baker Mayfield I’ve encountered within these pages, or anywhere for that matter. In your eyes he can do no wrong.
Others might give him credit where credit is due, but also call him out for poor play when warranted. But not you. You relentlessly attack any anti-Mayfield poster (despite empirical or documented evidence to support their critique) as if he has committed a federal crime for criticizing your hero. You callously label them Trask loving, idiot fools or claim they don’t know what they’re talking about. You often do so with a mind prone to rambling periods blurred with mixed metaphors.
I was thinking (like many I presume), “Wow, what is it with this guy?”
    And then it hit me.
I envisioned your bedroom walls adorned with Mayfield pictures and posters, perhaps even one or two with you by his side with the inscription, ME AND BAKE CHILLIN’
After digesting this epiphanic moment, I was left with a single question. And I’ll preface it by saying that we’re all adults here, and it is 2024.
So don’t be shy and answer truthfully.
Are you head over heels in love with Baker Mayfield?

Marine Buc (and others) are really hung up on “Midget Mayfield’s” height (or lack of). Here’s a list of the playoff QBs this year (shortest to tallest):

    Baker Mayfield 6’1″
    Tua Tagovailoa 6’1″ (lost)
    Brock Purdy 6’1″
    Jalen Hurts 6’1″
    Lamar Jackson 6’2″
    Patrick Mahomes 6’2″ (won)
    Dak Prescott 6’2″
    CJ Stroud 6’3″ (won)
    Matthew Stafford 6’3″
    Jordan Love 6’4″
    Jared Goff 6’4″
    Josh Allen 6’5″
    Mason Rudolph 6’5″
    Joe Flacco 6’6″ (lost)

It seems there are 3 other “midget QBs” (6’1″) that made it to the playoffs and is the extra inch for Mahomes, Jackson and Prescott REALLY a big deal? LOL

I agree with you about Baker’s height.

My concern about Baker being our quarterback this season was his past production on losing football teams.

Baker’s performance this season has put that skepticism from me to rest.

If Jason Licht doesn’t fix the interior of our offensive line from Stinnie to the weakest link Hainsey in this draft, then our running game and passing game will not be as effective as they can be.

I love The Bucs need a back like Wiscon’s 6’2”, 245 lb, 4.4 forty running back in Braelon Allen who is #34 on Bruce Feldman’s Freak List. Think Derrick Henry or Bo Jackson or Jim Brown.

Behind this o-line, with no run support to speak of – it would be miraculous for KT to improve over what BM has done.

I can’t account for yout lack of reading Skills JA. I have said multiple times I see baker as around a top 14 to top 12 guy in the right system . This season I could see him in the fuure cracking top ten maybe but never seen him as top five

According to your reading skills however I would have to rank him top five if not number one.

The reason you see people goo all out on defense of baker is not because they think he is perfect or the GOAT but because of the level of IRRATIONAL hate they see spewed agaisnt him

yeah we are RIGHTEOUS group that don’t like unfairness or evil

IF you haters would ahve ben reasonable and logical then you wouldn;t see so much defense. However you mitwits can’t stop at – I dont like him. You always have to go to the idiot level like

“He’s nothing but a good backup in this league”

BY almsot any metric Baker is top twenty among STARTERS and in many top ten

the idea a starter in the top half of the league s is nothing but a backup is just

    Stupid
    ignorant
    drop down sily
    dirt for brains
    IQ plumetting
    terminally math challenged

rubish. However your hate compells you to make such demonstrably silly claims

so you get push back and its well deserved. Cry me a river

Dont sweat the “anti-Baker” boys. At this point , Benjamin Franklin said it best

I remember liking Star Wars and children’s toys when I was in elementary school.

In middle school and continuing on into adulthood my interests changed to girls, friends, girls, sports , girls, food, girls, music, girls, cars, girls, hunting, girls, fishing, girls.

Star Wars doesn’t even register on my Give A F Scale today as a grown man.

  82. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Tony is literally calling people who have criticized Baker as evil.

Tony is off his rocker and completely unhinged.

To sane people evil is racism, child abusers, serial killers, slavery, etc… and not people criticizing sports figures.

To insane people and unhinged people like Tony criticizing sports figures is just as evil as racism, child abusers, serial killers, slavery, etc.

Todd believed in Baker in March 2018 during draft pick visits to the jets. Browns got their first and Todd had to settle for Darnold.

People usually do have a higher interest in what they can’t get

    Its just human nature..

which kinds of explains why you don’t get star wars later releases as an adult – kinda need to have watched it with a woman to get the full charm

not just by yourself with a small bag of popcorn 🙂

  89. flogrown Says:

Oh, please. The guy is a .500 journeyman. Trask would have been .500 too and we would know what we have. Instead all we know is that the .500 journeyman is just that.

Getting tired of hearing that “The Buc’s played nobody this year”…

Green Bay (whom we stomped) just put a hurt on the Cowboys. Houston (whom we had beat) stomped Cleveland. I think we can beat Philly, as long as we don’t try to play into their strength (D-Line). If we keep trying up the gut on 1st and 2nd down, we lose. Period.

Instead, lets use the same game play we did vs Green Bay. Lots of Play Action rollouts on 1st down. Crossers to Godwin, White, and Otten. Then try to work it deep to Evans or Palmer, or even run a rollout/throwback once in a while. Give White some YAC on short checkdowns. Play MAN on Defense – Philly has no one who should scare us, and Hurt’s hand will limit his downfield throws.

This game will show us if the Coaching Staff can game plan a win, or not. Either way, they’ve earned another season – but I would love to see some growth.

Star Wars and Star Trek dorks were Band/Drama/AV geeks that us guys on the football team made fun of in high school.

Movies were for making out with your girl and not for watching.

Popcorn was a waste of money.

Now go write a Star Trek Wars poem to match your Bucs poem and tell us how much more manly you are than us with your prose.

  92. Capt.Tim Says:

    Belleglade buc.

Lol. Fun listening you pretend you were a cool kid. You werent. Anyone as angry and unhappy as you are, was the kid we used to bully. And I doubt you’re shaking down much leg, at your low paying job.
Its always pretty obvious who hates their life, by the way they talk about others. All the Baker haters are angry because he is successful, when everyone said he would lose.
Losers hate to see a potential member leave their club.

Baker has exceeded all expectations. He’s a top ten QB, who took a cap strapped bad team to the playoffs. He may get a long term contract here. I hope so. But he will get a long term contract somewhere.

And all the hate wont change that. Baker proved he is a winner. Naturally, losers are gonna hate that.

what a nitwit – last star wars movie was released 4 years ag and made over a billion dollars ( clearly more than AV guys) and he is still stuck on The Empire Strikes Back.

Latest star trek series was released last year

You aren’t making yourself look cool. You a re making yourself look like a 45+ older dude still stuck in Belle glades who modern culture has passed by just like the game of football has done the same.

You didn’t bully anyone in school big guy.

I did, because I was an offensive lineman who was tall and really big and really strong all of my life and I really liked hitting and hurting people as well as getting hit and being hurt. I was a poor kid with anger issues who was smart enough to figure out that football was my ticket out of my situation.

Football is for violent people who like to commit violence on another human being and like having violence committed on them. I was good at it and earned a scholarship to a major college football program.

Thankfully I met my bride in college and she helped me become a better person and took me to church, helped me graduate college, and after 30 some years, a few kids and now a bunch of grandkids later I am thankful for her for helping me become a better person.

You said any quarterback who wins a Division Championship in the NFL is a great quarterback.

I asked you if 2020 NFC East Division Champion Quarterback Taylor Heineke was a great quarterback, and like the tough guy you are you ran away from that like a chicken 🐔 and didn’t answer that simple question.

You run like a scared little deer in the woods from a simple question and you expect anyone to seriously believe that you were a bully. 🤣

I love all types of music, but rap is one of my favorites. NWA and Dr. Dre some of my favorites. Dr. Dre is a billionaire who is known worldwide, had a movie made about his career, and he performed at the Super Bowl in what I thought was one of the best halftime shows ever, and yet there are people who hate his music and hated that Super Bowl halftime performance I’m fine with that.

Weird how Star Trek Wars fans are so easily offended by people who don’t like those movies. Shows some real insecurity.

US Sugar, the largest US exporter of sugar and importer of sugar resides in Belle Glade.

Also, Belle Glade is one of the largest importer and exporters of corn.

The world and the US depend on Belle Glade.

If Belle Glade stops producing corn and sugar the world starves and dies.

Look at how many food products on your grocery store shelves that have corn or sugar or both in them and get back to me.

In the history of ALL US High Schools, Belle Glade and Pahokkee combined, two small rural high schools just separated by a bridge have produced 60 NFL players who have all played in the Muck Bowl and know each other well, including Hall of Famer Ricky Jackson.

That is the most NFL players that any area in the history of the United States High Schools has EVER produced.

For comparison in Florida and nationally the big city upper class rich kid private school of St. Thomas Aquinas has produced 42 NFL football players.

Could you be any more clueless Tony?
