Kellen Moore To Interview With The Bucs

January 26th, 2024

NFL OC Kellen Moore.

Well, this interesting.

It seems one guy the Bucs plan to interview for the vacant offensive coordinator gig is a guy used to coaching big time quarterbacks.

Former Chargers and Cowboys offensive coordinator and former Cowboys quarterback Kellen Moore is expected to sit down with Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

That’s the word from Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Moore, just 35 years old, is interesting because he helped develop Dak Prescott into one of the better quarterbacks in the league and a perennial playoff QB.

And yeah, Justin Herbert isn’t bad either.

Joe finds it a little odd the Bucs would interview Moore. He’s a pass-a-lot playcaller. Bowles wants to run the ball.

  1. BucVoyager Says:

Not a fan of his. He’s been canned from 2 different QBs that are arguably better than Baker.

  2. BucFanDMV Says:

Yea this isnt a good look I agree with BucVoyage this isn’t the hire at all.

  3. A Bucs Fan Says:

No to Moore. Brian Johnson is interviewing too. He was fired because Jalen couldn’t read a defense and that’s really not on him.

  4. TomBucsFan Says:

    not a good pick

  5. WhinnyJoe Says:

I only want an OC who my sweet prince Baker approves. We need Bakers input 1st. I guess Todd can have a little say too because he is a genius and all.

They both deserve it because the Bucs won a playoff game last year

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hire Minority coordinator’s so we can get comp picks when they get hired as head coaches.

  7. Jmarkbuc Says:

    No on Moore….

Been thinking the same thing. 2x 3s was a windfall. Our IOL/S gaps just vanished with the departure of Canales.

  9. Beejezus-belt Says:

Maybe Bowles realized at the end of season this team was better throwing the ball more, and guess what else improved? Running the ball, the Bucs were much better running the ball when passing on first and second down started happening.

*WOULD HAVE been a windfall. We dont get those picks because Canales was only with us for one year.

  11. AL121976 Says:

So did we get additional picks for the loss of Canales? I’m confused

  12. Jiminfk Says:

What picks did the Bucs actually receive from the Panthers?

  13. Pewter Power Says:

lol uh no that’s not that interesting unless we’re drafting a rookie quarterback. Baker doesn’t need to be developed he needs to win

  14. gofortheface30 Says:

Nah we need more token diversity and forced representation! Pretty soon everyone will be leveraging the ham fisted DEI rules to get comp picks and the 3rd round of the draft will take about 3 days

  15. Statisticly Insignificant Reader Says:

    LOL all the experts herein

  16. A Bucs Fan Says:

That rule is pure racism but Bucs did NOT receive additional picks. Canales would have needed to be in Tampa for two seasons.

  17. Leighroy Says:

Just cuz you date a broad doesn’t mean you have to marry her. Interview the whole NFL if we have to.

  18. Marky Mark Says:

You gotta start somewhere. Just start interviewing. Van Pelt should be next. Getting fired in the NFL sometimes is due to non football reasons. Stefanski fired Van Pelt as a preemptive strike to stop the fans from demanding Steffi turn over play calling to the guy who creamed Pitsburg when Steffigula was in Quarantine. As far as a pass first guy I think Bowles realized Canales was under utilizing Baker. Bowles had no idea who his QB was when he hired Canales. Todd assumed he would have Trask or some scrub as QB so he wanted a hand off to the RB kind of QB. Even when they first had Baker they believed the Browns smear campaign that Baker could only be successful in a run first offense. Bowles was pleasantly surprised to Find out Baker is actually a throw first QB. So this guy makes sense. Also Baker is at least as talented as Dak or Herbert.

  19. Obvious Says:

It definitely says something about the thinking at One Buc Palace. Thrown in Johnson and the arrow points towards Trask… hmm.

I guarantee one thing. Bowles and Licht have a Far better feel for what’s going on within the circle than any one outside of it guessing or posturing here at the world renowned jbf. Maybe Canales moving on has a greater reach than any of us are guessing at or hoping for. Most would rather have Baker back and try it again with this band of hopeful yet hapless and uncertain crew because we would Be better than last year with a little continuity and being familiar with the game style.

Not so sure that’s really going to pan out now with Benedict Arnold moved along to the enemies camp. Maybe the inside word is Far Different than any of us are dreaming and assuming. Especially with the guys they are interviewing at this time.

We SHOULD stick to building the lines as top priority No Matter who our QB will be. And in reality, Trask isn’t a bad answer. He’s had enough time to learn now from two totally different styles of play. The question for him is Can He Read a Defense? And if he can, he might just be the option that the head office may “have to” take a serious look at ESPECIALLY if Baker is going to insist on more money than we have to realistically work with.

We Will See but Definitely some interesting interviews

Here we go again… Fun Times.

  20. Let Em Bake Says:

Let Baker be his own OC… call plays from the huddle…like the greats of old. Think of the money Bucs would save…. 🙂

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The 2 year rule only applies to HC leaving….

  22. geno711 Says:

He did call a lot of pass plays at Dallas. Yet

His 4 years as OC for Dallas:
6th in Pts — 5th in rushing yards
17th in Pts — 17th in rushing yards
1st in Pts — 9th in rushing yards
    4th in Pts — 8th rushing yards

Not giving him a total pass in Chargers but besides having his starting C miss 14 games last year, we had both starting receivers, the starting running back and the starting QB all miss significant amount of games last year.

That feels like a recipe for a bad offensive year.

    Last year:

21st in points scored. 346 for the season
Bucs were 20th in points scored. 348 for the season. I am thinking they did not have the same injury issues overall as the Chargers.

  23. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Tampabaybucfan – the two year rule applies to any and every assistant that is hired as a head coach or general manager.

It’s under resolution JC-2A in the Rooney rule.

    Clearly states the following:

The employer-club shall be eligible to receive this Draft choice compensation if:
The minority employee hired as a Head Coach or Primary Football Executive has been employed by the employer-club for a minimum of two full seasons; and
The minority employee is not the Head Coach or Primary Football Executive of the employer-club and is hired into the same position with the new club. There can be no break in employment between clubs.

No to Moore. Brian Johnson is interviewing too. He was fired because Jalen couldn’t read a defense and that’s really not on him.

I believe that I read last year that Brian Johnson’s father was Jalen Hurts high school coach. I did not watch every Philly game last year, but it seems a simple explanation that all the fault goes to Jalen and his inability to read defenses when just the year before, no one was saying that when Shane Steichen was the OC at Philly and Hurts threw only 6 Ints that year.

  25. optimisticbucsfan Says:

Brian Johnson is probably the better hire for what we want to do on offense.

  26. Nicholas Carlson Says:

This guy wouldn’t take our calls last year. He’s a good one!

  27. GP Says:

    @geno711
    Thanks for the breakdown.
Hopefully Licht is conducting the interview as Bowles seems to be allergic to scoring points instead of TOP, turn overs, and saving time outs for future games.
As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t mind if he was interviewed for the HC position.
    Just saying.

  29. D Cone Says:

Been thrown under the Bus by two head coaches that were on the hot seat to save or try to save their own butts.

He might be a Good Choice given a healthy QB

  30. Bucs Guy Says:

Love this. He was my first choice. Future HC.

  31. RiggedNFL Says:

Yes, to minority hires only. We need picks more than anything else.

If there’s a transgender coach out there, we should hire he/her/they/them.

Probably would be gifted the Lombardi trophy for that.

  32. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Interesting. He did great with Dallas, not so much with the Chargers. I think he’s still got the juice but Staley clamped down on him.

  33. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Geno – I’m quoting the Bucs defensive coach on the sideline during their playoff game. You can find the the audio clip if you want to too.

    Nope, you are both wrong.

We got zero comp picks b/c Canales was only here for 1 year. Has to be here for 2 years minimum to get those comp picks.

Just hire the best OC you can. Chasing possible comp picks for a minority hire is ridiculous

  35. BoiseBucsFan Says:

I’m telling you as someone who lives in Boise, this would be a franchise changing hire.

Fair enough. I will look for the clip.

    Two things can be true.
    1. Jalen Hurts did a horrible job reading the Bucs defense during the game.

    2. Jalen Hurts is a better NFL quarterback than Brian Johnson is an NFL coordinator.

  37. vadertime Says:

Baker is a gunslinger and likes to throw the ball deep. Kellen Moore might be the right ticket to get Baker to the next level. Bowles is stuck 30 years in the past. Look around the league, all the top teams in the NFL have a QB who likes to throw the ball. Nobody made it into the playoffs solely based on a running game. Get this guy, fire Bowles and let’s get on with the next chapter of the Bucs story. Go Bucs.

  38. BuxfaninTX Says:

    Dear Lord no!

  39. BuxfaninTX Says:

    Is Eric Biennemys chances over?

  40. GhostofBrady Says:

On the fence for Kellen Moore. He got decent results with Dak and Herbert. Both offenses could score. Dallas and Chargers lost some games due to their head coaches – Staley and McCarthy. I really like the offenses San Fran and Rams use and want to see what Tampa can do in year 2 with the Rams offense.

Brian Johnson would be a terrible call. When Shane Steichen left the Eagles as OC for another job, the wheels fell off the offense on Johnson’s watch. They were 10-1 but you could see that offense was not right.

  41. Glenn Says:

Kellen is a great choice as OC. He is one of the top 10, if not 5, offensive minds in the game. He did great in Dallas both in passing and running offensive stats. LA year was full of offensive injuries to key players including QB. And LA’s defense stunk.

  42. Oneilbuc Says:

Man no look how Justin Herbert looked this pass year no I wouldn’t bring him here either he sucks!! If you think the running game is bad now it would be worse with him .

  43. EJ Says:

this would b great this man know how to call plays with the cowboy he had the number 1 offense n their running game was better
