Brian Johnson To Interview With Bucs

January 26th, 2024

Big news!

Attention Kyle Trask occult: You will need to clear your schedule for the rest of the day. Joe hopes you are well-stocked at home with many cases of Bromosa.

Kyle Trask’s former quarterback coach and offensive coordinator with Florida, Brian Johnson, is scheduled to interview with the Bucs for their vacant offensive coordinator gig.

Johnson recently was canned by the Eagles.

This news comes from Jonathan Jones of CBS.

So what does this mean? Well, Joe can only guess if Johnson wows Bucs coach Todd Bowles in his interview, this may be the last gasp to save Trask and his days with Tampa Bay.

Trask, a second round pick by the Bucs in 2021, has only thrown a grand total of nine passes in the NFL.

Does this suggest the Bucs are scared they may lose Baker Mayfield in free agency since former Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales bolted to Carolina?

Lol This is terrible news for Joe and his Baker Cult. ………Clown alert.

  2. Leighroy Says:

Even if Trask was not on the roster, they’d still be interviewing him. IDK if he’s the best candidate out there, but he’s certainly worth kicking the tires over.

  3. JD Still Says:

Last gasp to save Trask? LOL ! More like a last gasp to save the Bucs from another lost decade!

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

Yeah Bucs were interested last year because of the history with Trask. If he is hired it’s going to be an interesting offseason.

  5. Marky Mark Says:

    Van Pelt next

  6. go dawgs Says:

Great another loser from that s*&^ town Gainesville….

  7. geno711 Says:

I was a Brian Johnson fan last year.
Pretty cool resume including as a player for Utah going undefeated and beating Alabama in a New Years day game.

However, after last year with good talent on that team in Philly and Philly offense getting worse and worse through the year. Maybe he is just not ready.

Most of his good college years as a coach, he had Dan Mullen ahead of him as an offensive mind. Obviously in Philly, he had Shane Steichen in front of him until last year.

I sure he understands the game at a high level. Can he really be the play caller at a high level is the question.

  8. Marky Mark Says:

Have we not learned from Winston that picking a QB just because they were a local college favorite is a bad idea? A Michigan guy won the Superbowl and a Oklahoma guy creamed Philly in the playoffs.

  9. gofortheface30 Says:

Baker has actual proven use cases with a 4k yr, a divisional round, and throwing for 350 in said divisional round that justifies a following. Trask fans are just losers. Youre like the fat ugly girl that cant sing on American Idol. Their dumb parents cant tell them she sucks, so it takes Simon to level set expectations and give them the truth. Gator fans – I’d like to invite you to visualize a scenario in which Trask starts this yr instead of Baker. Do you even have the capacity in that marshmellow brain to objectively determine that outcome would not have even come close to Bakers. If you actually framed your argument that positions a true young blue chipper as your preference to compete long term like a Josh Allen/Burrow/Jordan Love etc etc then ya I would agree. But you’re arguing for a guy that couldn’t even dress on game day half the time. Whatre you even doing

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

lol the logic is getting wild on this site…

Like the idea Canales basically is the only reason Baker did good… so we should draft another QB to go with our “???” new OC? Why? I mean if we assume Baker or a vet QB coming off a great year will suck with a new OC why do we assume a rookie will be a good investment? With a defensive head coach right now?

It’s just confusing to me. If we had some QB grooming type head coach or OC then I get wanting to invest in a rookie. Otherwise we may be wasting some kids career while continuing to ruin Bakers.

  11. NutterBuccer Says:

This has nothing to do with Trask. Johnson is a good up and coming coach. Eagles were 10-1 don’t forget. Nick sirriani fired him to save his own job. Would be a good hire.

  12. Lol Says:

    LOL

  13. Couch Fan Says:

The only thing I expect from the new OC is to have an offense that looks a lot like the last 2. Run, Run, Pass, punt. Why? Because its pretty clear the OC is not the one running the offense….

  14. Saskbucs Says:

It sure would be nice if Trask was the answer but clearly he is not or he would have gotten a shot already. It is tempting to dream about that free money if you didn’t have to sign Baker for 30 million. Danielle Hunter and a top FA C could be coming through that door instead.

  15. A Bucs Fan Says:

Wouldn’t it be something if Baker followed Canales? Given his comments on him I wouldn’t be surprised.

  16. StormyInFl Says:

Wouldn’t it be something if the Bucs hired Johnson, and Trask STILL rides the pine?

Would that be enough to put an end to the Trask nonsense?

  17. Tb bolts Says:

Gofortheface, I hope you enjoyed baker mayfields season ending pick in a do or die drive. Anyone who doesn’t have mayfields jock draped over their eyes saw it coming a mile away. Trask who pretty much didn’t play a single series the entire season lives in your head rent free lmao

  18. mark2001 Says:

Oh Joe…. you could be setting up the Trask Troopers up for the big fall. Sure, he might be his former coach. But the guy might have been around enough by now to assess Trask as not being NFL franchise QB material. And to add insult to the injury hey have suffered the last few years, he might suggest Kanning Kyle.

  19. A Bucs Fan Says:

@StormyInFl- who brought up Trask? He’s living rent free in your head man.

It’s an honest question. Mayfield credited Mcvay and Canales as being the only coaches in his career to cater to his talents. He could follow him. It’s not like Bryce Young needs to start. He’d probably be better off sitting and learning for a year any way.

    YES — Great post,

  21. Since76 Says:

Interview all good candidates and pick the best one. If it’s Johnson Trask will be the frontrunner. Trask looked better in camp but not much. So he probably isn’t the answer either. Because Mayfield wasn’t the answer due to being inconsistent. Interesting times.

  22. D Cone Says:

Eagles tried to do with Hurts what CHI tried with Fields and BALT has done with Jackson. Turn a QB that breaks contain and runs the ball to a QB that breaks contain and continues to look downfield for a Receiver. Jackson got it and Fields was just short another weapon besides DJ Moore but is capable. Run is a last resort. Philly’s problems were more Injury related than Scheme in 2023. They will bounce back in 2024.

Johnson may want a guy like that behind center.

Mayfield did well in Canales’ Idiot proof throw on time Offense. Is he capable of
doing what Hurts, Jackson and Fields do and not just get free and look to move the chains? Maybe.

Either way Bucs will need to make strides at running the ball better than a 30ish ranking and might fair better with a low $ QB and some studs added to the O Line thru the Draft and FA.

  23. Couch Fan Says:

Im confused how somebody can be so against The ReTodd but be so adamant that The ReTodd was absolutely right without question when it comes to Trask. Especially when you consider none of us has ever seen Trask for a whole game let alone a whole season.

If theres a “Cult of Trask” then its members are the ones who keep bringing him up as if they know beyond any shadow of doubt what he is capable of. Never seen so many obsessed with someone they swear isnt very good. LMAO

  24. geno711 Says:

    D Cone.

Ok with you being a Justin Fields fan. Plenty of them out there. He gets shown on highlights because of his crazy good skills.

Just know this. Typically, as the game goes on, most quarterbacks, especially in the 4th quarter, get better.

Justin Fields was the worst of the starting QBs in the NFL in the 4th quarter. To me that is a pretty good indicator that he is not someone that I want to be my starting QB, even if he is exciting on some plays.

  25. Vince Says:

What happened to Eric Bieniemy. Why aren’t we hearing his name for OC

  26. Allbuccedup Says:

He would be my pick. He was the scapegoat in Philly.

  27. geno711 Says:

    Milton.

A lot of us our not suggesting that Trask shouldn’t be on the Bucs.
However, to suggest that he should have been the starter last year for some reason seems to me to be more absurd. It was never based upon any real NFL coaching or scouting assessment. It just seems to be more that some fans on this site just want it to happen.

All I know that at the beginning of 2023, I wanted the best guy to win. Baker had an excellent season, and yet many on the site so many were still complaining about him. Just seemed like an odd choice to me that 12 or 16 games into the season, that there were so many people on this site still talking about Trask.

  28. Allbuccedup Says:

Its easy if you cant sign Mayfield then draft a QB. Package a deal with Barrett or Tyron to move up or one of our cornerbacks( both are an injury waiting to happen ). You can fill the position with our extra 3rd round pick.

  29. Atrain Says:

Interested in seeing who the Bucs pick ,,,, I think we lost and excellent OC

  30. RBUC Says:

For the hundredth time already BECAUSE CANALAS WASN’T EMPLOYED BY THE BUCS 2 OR MORE SEASONS WE DON’T GET ANY ADDITIONAL DRAFT PICKS

  31. Duthsty Rothdes Says:

Go get dan mullen if you thinking of brian johnson; mullen is the guy who taught johnson

  32. Marine Buc Says:

Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson is also meeting with the Bucs this week.

Another interesting name to keep an eye on.

Morris might be taking him to Atlanta though…

  33. DBS Says:

Tony. Its actually bdog. Along with over 140 other names over 3 years. Aka Son of Trask.

  34. Couch Fan Says:

We all agreed that Brady didnt have a good season his final season with us. His numbers however are just as good as Mayfield’s and somehow Mayfield had an “excellent” season. These fan boys just cant keep any sort of consistency at all. Mayfield had an ok season. Certainly not excellent. And didnt win the starting job, he was gifted the starting job. Theres simply no way you can say he “won” it when he sat out the 2nd game and the back up never even got a chance to play with the starters. If you are being honest, this was not a fair competition.

  35. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Cool, people need to realize the Bucs haven’t given up on their R2 pick. Trask had a lot of growth this year according to reports. Just because they played Mayfield doesn’t mean he isn’t valued, just means Baker got thrown in the fire early. This horse crap about drafting a Wzb early is just that….they might take a flier on Spencer Rattler if he lasts to R4 because Wolford aint i, but I’d rather see Braelon Edwards if he’s still there

  36. Tony marks Says:

“Kyle Trask’s former quarterback coach and offensive coordinator with Florida, Brian Johnson, is scheduled to interview with the Bucs for the vacant offensive coordinator gig.”

    ——————–

This is potentially GREAT news for me since i have recently boarded the Mayfield move on Train ( love it if it were the Steelers).

Nothing could make Baker more hesitant to sign with the Bucs than to hire a coach with affections For Trask. Meanwhile it wouldn’t do a thing for Traskies because #1 Baker Boi Todd makes the call on QB1.

Literally every post from Milton/David/Trask Fan in this thread (and damn near every other one).

  38. A Bucs Fan Says:

StormyinFl- Ah you used my phrasing so my assumption was your comment was aimed at mine.

  39. Milton Says:

    @ geno711

1st, many here – I’d say 50% judging from their low IQ posts – would love to see Trask gone for no other reason than he played at Florida.

2nd, our resident perennial Trask basher himself, Joe, reluctantly wrote in two separate articles after training by camp had ended that Trask in fact “outplayed” Mayfield in training camp.

    Facts.

  40. Dave Pear Says:

Brian Johnson is probably the worst OC I’ve ever seen. I’d rather have Leftwurst. God no.

  41. RBUC Says:

It’s like playing Chess when you make a move you have to identify the strengths & weaknesses your position will be BEFORE making that move! JL & Company have crunched the numbers and I think they know if they pay this off season what Baker & Mike think they are worth the rest of the team’s needs can only be covered with band-aids! I think fixing Oline,Pass Rush, couple of physical RBs and more new blood sprinkled throughout the roster out weighs what both of them bring to the future of the franchise. If Kyle is 80% of what Baker was this past season the Bucs are a better team going that route. Just my opinion

  42. Milton Says:

Dave Pear Says: “Brian Johnson is probably the worst OC I’ve ever seen.”

How so? For turning a terrible rookie quarterback named Jalen Hurts into a Super Bowl quarterback by his third season?

  43. BakerBucs Says:

Is that rite this is bad news for baker rite oh buddy the reason baker is here is because of bowles jackass

  44. BakerBucs Says:

Funny then what happened to hurts this year he was mediocre at best

  45. Boss Says:

It doesn’t really matter anymore. The only decision that mattered was HC. They keep toilet bowl and we have to see that turd floating anytime we think of the bucs.

    you cant polish a turd

  46. BakerBucs Says:

Hay isn’t Brian Johnson the lead singer with ac/dc

  47. Milton Says:

Tonya Marks Says: “This wouldn’t do a thing for Traskies because #1 Baker Boi Todd makes the call on QB1.”

Thanks, Tonya, for unwittingly conceding that “#1 Baker Boi Todd” gifted Baker the starting job despite Trask outplaying Baker in training camp.

    LMAO.

  48. BakerBucs Says:

Turds up pal doesn’t that turd have a super bowl ring now that is a turd u can count on.why have none of the bucs players said 1 negative thing bout t.bowles seems like if he is as bad as u hatefully timers say it seems the players wud throw him under the bus.

  49. Milton Says:

All you Baker Bois are bashing an OC who turned a terrible rookie quarterback into a Super Bowl quarterback in his third season, and yet you celebrate Canales for turning a career sub-.500 quarterback into a career sub-.500 quarterback. LMAO.

  50. BakerBucs Says:

If that stationary Trask was the gift somebody wud be calling his # have u ever noticed his jersey # ah duh # 2 now that’s friggin funny # 2 he is the real real turd on this team its in his jersey

  51. Nick B Says:

This is kind of a silly take seeing as how they are also interviewing like 6 other guys who have never coached Trask in the past.

  52. JD Still Says:

I am beginning to think these Baker sycophants are trolls , paid to gaslight any perceived negative comments concerning Baker, they always seem to be the same small group , always attacking , always denigrating individuals commenting on Bakers shortcomings, but never saying anything positive about the Bucs, their latest target ? Brian Johnson because he was Kyle Trask’s Quarterback Coach in college completely ignoring his overall success as a coach and what he might be able to do for the team, strange , no?

  53. catcard202 Says:

Brian Johnson is no Shane Steichen when it comes to play calling…

  54. sasquatch Says:

This has nothing to do with Trask. Johnson is an up-and-coming coordinator in the league, and was a scapegoat in Philly. He has run an offense that should also be Baker-friendly and strong in the run-game. Sounds like the kind of thing Bowles wants. This would be a solid choice. Any benefit for Trask is incidental.

  55. DeRobbins Says:

big difference between the occult and a cult lol

  56. John Dixon Says:

    To Milton….

You are a complete idiot and need to stop with the ignorance.

  57. John Dixon Says:

Johnson is not an up and coming OC. He was a bit of a scapegoat, but Hurts and he did not get along, and he made some horrible decisions running that offense.

  59. Mike Noblin Says:

Stormyinfl- you really think mayfield would follow canales to sit on the bench when they are paying the “ what’s his name” kid to play and drafted to do so? Talk about ruining. Qb! Dumb

  60. BucsFan15 Says:

Looks like David changed his name to Milton for the off-season

  61. Since76 Says:

Baker bucs Hurts being mediocre is right. But he gave more than baker did to his team. Baker had about 190 more passing yards than hurts. Hurts had 600 rushing yards to Mayfield’s 160. So if Hurts was mediocre at best Mayfield is below Mediocre. That is coming by your definition. And I agree with you.

  62. Bosch Says:

So who is being interviewed for HC?

    #FIRE the LIAR!!!

  63. Rod Munch Says:

The guy with a much better QB in Philly, with a great offensive line, great WRs, a great TE — he ran that offense into the ground. Why would you want him?

As always you are delusional. Its the head coach that dertermines who plays. If as expected we have no change at the HC position it will be the same coach that wouldn’t even play Trask when Baker was barely able to walk.

“are just as good as Mayfield’s”

Again perhaps you need to start cheering for figure skating or gymnastics where OPINIONS actually mean something.

It’s football Couch. Tom Brady was 8-9 and lost BADLY at home in the first round of the playoffs. Baker was 9-8, WON the first round playoff game and played much better in the 2nd round in Detroit’s house than Brady did in game one against the Cowboys.

  69. Marky Mark Says:

Milton…Call the Rock and work out a FIFA like loan agreement where players from NFL can be loaned to the UFL to get playing time so they can prove themselves with resume builders such as 3,000 yards in a 10 game season. Soccer does thiz. They dont have minor leagues like Baseball and Hockey but rather independent clubs that loan out excess players to clubs in need for a fee of course. Gio Reyna can,t get playing time at Dortmund and is being loaned to Seville who is in dire need of attacking midfielders. The Glazers know exactly how this works as they own Manchester United.

The reason he didn’t play well wasn’t the players around him it’s because he is inconsistent. If I’m wrong please tell me where Mayfield was consistent this season.
