Baker Mayfield Makes Bucs Playoff History

January 16th, 2024

“You have got to be sh!tting me!

So the Bucs are supposed to let this guy walk in two months, eh?

Last night in the impressive Bucs win over the Eagles, Baker Mayfield pulled off something that not even the greatest quarterback to ever play for the Bucs, Tom Brady, achieved.

Per NFL Research, Mayfield became the first Bucs quarterback to throw for over 300 yards in a playoff game, throw for at least three touchdowns and not toss a pick.

No quarterback wearing Bucs gear has done that. Not Doug Williams, not Trent Dilfer, Shaun King or Brad Johnson. Hell, not even Rob Johnson or America’s Quarterback, Mr. Entertainment, Jameis Winston.

Not even the great Brady.

But Mayfield did this last night.

Joe isn’t sure how the Bucs can look themselves in the mirror if they let Mayfield up and walk out of One Buc Palace come March.

On a second team in a row that didn’t want to leave the locker room. Worst game thrown by the players EVER!!! What a JOKE!

  2. jehzsa Says:

    Just an ol’ fashion drubbing…

    Philly got cheesesteaked.

  3. SB~LV Says:

His arm strength was best I can recall

  4. BucU Says:

If we didn’t have all these ridiculous drops in the first half BM would’ve thrown for 400 yards.

  5. ATLBuc Says:

If not for dropped passes, he might have had 400 yards

  6. Phx Bucs Fan Says:

We have $80 mil in cap space next year. The only place Baker is going is to the bank.

  7. Jeff Says:

Eagles could have had a pick or two but the Bucs also dropped some critical passes. So it’s a wash. Performance approved!

  8. D-Rome Says:

Joe isn’t sure how the Bucs can look themselves in the mirror if they let Mayfield up and walk out of One Buc Palace come March.

It would be dumb and irresponsible.

  9. Baking with Canales Says:

    Phx got it right!!!
    LFG!!!!!

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

My only criticism for Mayfield is his not getting rid of the ball…..it simply doesn’t seem to be an option for him……how many coverage sacks have we given up this year…
It gets him banged up and costs us…

The upside is he is wary of throwing picks.

  11. SC Bucs Fan Says:

I was wrong about Baker Mayfield. 100%.

  12. Baking with Canales Says:

NE Fan’s world is collapsing today. I think he is related to “the bucco realisto”.
NE Fan go cry with BillyCheat.!!!!!!!!

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

I’m all in on Mayfield. He’s impressed me all year but that took it to another level

  14. optimisticbucsfan Says:

    Baker should get PAID

    And paid well.

Don’t see how they get out of it offering less than $35-40 mill

  15. Cardiac kidz Says:

Great game by BM and our young receivers. The Eagles shut down for most of the game ME and CG, Otton and others made Jason Licht look like a great GM. BM is really good when his first read is open, much like last night. Let’s get ready to neuter the Detroit Lions.

  16. NE Fan Says:

Jeff, the Eagles didn’t have dropped balls or missed tackles? Only difference theirs were on purpose.

  17. Fansince76 Says:

They can’t, Bucs have to sign Baker its that simple.
    He aint goin anywhere.

  18. BA’s Red Pen Says:

You guys, leave NE fan alone, she’s going through some tough times today.

  19. stpetebucfan Says:

I agree completely with TBBF. Mayfield does occasionally hold on the ball too long and as TBBF suggests there is some upside, perhaps that’s how he has corrected one of his biggest deficiencies ints. I just wish he’d learn to toss it into the cheap seats every now and then.

I’m all for signing Mayfield but not to a long

  20. SufferingSince76 Says:

Will the Bucs be able to afford him, especially with Winfield and Evans deserving to get paid and hopefully locking up Wirfs?

  21. Gipper Says:

Not even in victor can the Baker Haters help themselves: “His arm strength is the best I can recall.” “….not getting rid of the ball quick enough.”

Mayfield has always had one of the strongest arms in the NFL. Still holds the record for the longest throw in a NFL game in history where he threw a pass airborne 75 yards against Cinnci in 2022. The sacks are coverage sacks where middle of pocket collapses and he can’t get rid of the ball safely. Quit saying dumb things pretending you know what you are talking about.

  22. ChiBuc Says:

Congrats gents! It seemed like Canales finally listened to all of you and your gameplanning input.

Great game, from DB to QB. Even JTS and Hall looked alive. Dean leading in tackles!! I believe I even saw Barrett in frame once or twice.

1 question: what was Mayfield snorting as he was walking thru the tunnel to the field? Whatever it was, I hope he has a steady supply because he’ll be back next yr

  23. stpetebucfan Says:

    OOPS…long term deal.

I agree with the concept of the NFL’s salary cap! It has succeeded beyond belief in terms of creating parity. I realize some here who are football purists mourn the fact that the Cap has created what for them is mediocrity and eliminated any chances of a real dynasty. I respect that opinion but I accept the game as it is an LOVE the fact that despite all the yammering about the succo NFC South and the weak Central the “dominant” East didn’t even make it past the first round!!!
    That’s freaking awesome.

Here is my beef. It’s the EXECUTION of the Cap. Just freaking make it SIMPLE so fans can follow. You get X amount of $$$ a year and that’s it!!! No freaking borrowing from the future or deferring freaking payments.

If there’s going to be a cap there should be an OBVIOUS system that can’t be played and rearranged to the degree that we have to go to websites to try and make any sense of it. And for those of you who have visited Spotrac or other salary sites it doesn’t get that much easier.

It’s not that hard. NO CARRY OVER…stop with all this about team in cap hell.
Don’t let them SPEND themselves into cap hell!!!

But we have the rules as they are and so while I’m for signing Mayfield…PAY him whatever the Bucs sign him for…do NOT start moving tons of salary around to mortgage the future once again.

I LOVE Mayfield because screw moxie he just a freaking gamer to the degree that sometimes it bites him in the butt. But it also means risking his multimillion dollar salary. Give Mayfield a huge bump but not long term…

PLEASE DO NOT MORTGAGE THE FUTURE.

Start making the painful cuts THIS offseason.

  24. Jeffs grandpa Says:

Could of would of should of don’t matter son

  25. Jeffs grandpa Says:

She knows her team will go back to being the door mat of the afc east like pre Brady /Belicheck

  26. Steven007 Says:

Not bad for a quarterback who can’t throw over 12 yards, right Marine? I think I had to read that 40 times over the weekend…

  27. ChiBuc Says:

Side note: why do so many of you feel the need to point fingers and empower trolls? You post more about David and “haters” than the game. You’d think after 30+ of easily accessible internet and 20 yrs of fb that you might have learned by now that the best way to quiet a troll is to ignore them.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, on this site cares if you are “right”, “predicted,” “said,” etc. Enjoy the moment with fans and stop trying to flex your pathetic yapping blog muscle. The keyboard bully pulpit is just sad

  28. Orlando Native Says:

Baker just got a 4-5 year contract for his family. Everyone knows he can do it if you surround him with some solid talent on both sides of the ball.
I’m just enjoying the Cowboy and Eagle tears on the shows this morning.

  29. Orlando Native Says:

And both lines are probably why the Bucs are where they’re at right now. Just like with Brad Johnson…the line stayed healthy and realized they have a QB who can win if they lift their game.

  30. Joe in Michigan Says:

Baker looked good! The defense looked good! On to Detroit!

  31. NE Fan Says:

You all have this grand illusion I want Bucs to lose. Not true, I have become a fan of a number Bucs players. But, you all watched that game and seriously can’t tell me the Eagles had any want to move on. They hate their coaches and want them out. The rumor has been out there for weeks. Missed arm tackles, pointd off the board TWICE, dropped balls no penalty calls on Bucs, Eagles were not moving on. If you all are happy about that then so be it, a win is a win is a win. Beat Detriot who wants to win and I’ll be the first to congratulate you and recant my opinion of.Bowles. I will say, Canales did have a good game plan and wished he wasn’t a year late, thanks BA!!!

  32. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Since mayfield is only 28, if I were making an introductory offer for his quarterbacking services, I’d start at 150-200 millski for 5 years and go from there. We need him, he likes playing here, and he is good.

  33. First Name Greatest Says:

#1 overall pick as a QB, Tom Brady and now another #1 Overall pick as the starter quite possibly the best run of Qb’s in our franchise’s not so esteemed history

    LFB

  34. Marky Mark Says:

it is real!y out of our control. The market will determine his value. Two legendary coachez will be on the move and they might bid for him. Who would not want to play for Carroll or Belechick? I would say Tampa has the inside track but if Stafford retires than the Rams have the edge. Mcvey turned Bakers career around and acting is a real possibility after football.

  35. D Cone Says:

When a team is 11-11 in Playoff games that does not leave a whole lot of games to do it.

I’m sure if Brady is 35-13 in his playoff Career he has had something similar. Oh yeah he threw for 505, 3 TD’s and no picks in a Super Bowl. Would bet there are few more in there too.

Pennsylvania has been kind to Mayfield. First playoff game team gifted him with 5 turnovers and the other the defense resembled something from Rutgers.

No Philly drive drive started past their own 25 until into the third quarter and that was the 27. Last drive started at the 37. Three inside the 20 @ 13, 10. and 9. Defense and Special teams were way more impressive than a QB throwing to receivers that were not contested and were not tackled when they were.

He looked like Matt Stafford against the Lions on Sunday so give him a big multi year deal.

He looks great on the side of the gym where people are benching 200. Now that he has been told the pink weights are for the ladies lets see how he does on the Men’s side where they are Benching 400.

Keep putting Mayfield on the fat side of the room where he looks totally jocked.

  36. NE Fan Says:

Hurts running into the locker room post game says it all. He looked like he broke into a concession stand and stole all the beer money. Rick Flare as celebrity spokesperson, what an organization. Haha!

  37. Iron Wombat Says:

    But muh Trask! lol
    Lock Baker up long term.

  38. BucFanDMV Says:

I have no problem with the buccaneers paying him but you do not over pay for him with Wirfs and Winfield coming up ..

  39. TexasBuc 1776 Says:

Best game of the season, we came out on fire. The coaches, who I have been down on schemed their best game, kudos.
Pre-season I had us winning 7 games max, we over-achieved, kudos to coaches and players. It’s obvious now that Baker is worth the investment, pay the man.
The other encouraging thing is the young guns on the team, kudos to Mr. Licht.
    Go Bucs!!

  40. BelleGladeBuc Says:

    Gipper

That pass that Baker threw 70 plus yards in the air for the NFL record was a Hail Mary pass that hit the crossbar in a game against the Ravens.

I still feel bad for laughing about it when I saw the highlight of it on ESPN when the Ravens safety ran full speed into the post tracking it 🤣

Arm strength was never the question about Baker, ever.

  41. Gipper Says:

    ChiBuc,

Don’t need lectures from you. In case you have been asleep the entire season, the overwhelming sentiment on this blog has been Mayfield can’t do this or that, Bowles is a lousy coach or just “he sucks.” When some of us try to argue otherwise, we have been lambasted by the same experts. There is a wonderful poetry in reminding so called “fans” that they were wrong about so many things about this team. Of course, we enjoy the team win but it is even sweeter having these alleged “fans” wipe the egg off their faces. Revisionist history being what it is there is already a lot of “I never said that.” The written word doesn’t lie.

  42. WyomingJoe Says:

Fellow Bucs, the Heads of the Baker Haters are exploding today, especially David’s and NE Fan’s. They were wrong about him but still don’t have the b*lls to admit it. It’s actually very funny to see them squirm.

Dr. Tony Marks might be able to mix them a magical potion to relieve their pain and suffering. But I hope not. They’re getting what they deserve.

    Keep wining Bucs.

    Keep winning Baker.

  43. Allbuccedup Says:

Resign Winfield, Mayfield and Evans in that order.

  44. Bojim Says:

Wrong. What you have NOT learend about socal media is whats sad and pathetic

Your take on trolls shows you havem’t learned anything from social media . A single troll can be starved – dont push back on a band of trolls they take over twitter/facebook/youtube and just about any other socia platofrm

I won’t go politics but go ahead and apply that naive theory of yours to certain groups and see if they just go away because they haven’t been fed. That s a pretty immature take

Besides the very heart of sports is standing by your team and the senes of validation when they win. If you don’t like that go watch figure skating or curling or watcd Nickolodeon. All season People have been blasted for supporting their team and a certain QB . They are PERFECTLY fine in saying – see? especially since I dont recall seeing this rant of yours when they were being blasted

    #haterssucK #deservetohearaboutit

  46. BakerFan Says:

It was nice to hear Troy Aikman speak about Baker Mayfield. Mayfield made some incredible throws. The Mike Evans drop could not been any better.

BTW MarineBuc I believe that was over 12 yards. I hope you drop that stupid mantra that you were projecting all over every article this past week. But knowing you, you will come up with some other nonsensical crap.

  47. infomeplease Says:

I assume BM6’s sore ribs and sprained ankle didn’t effect him to much!!!! Great game BM6, repeating great game!
When all the players play at their best, the Bucs can compete with and beat anyone! Next week in Detroit won’t be an easy one, but can be had! They are well coached and make adjustments when needed. The Bucs need to bring their A game again!! LFG!!!

  48. DoooshLaRue Says:

Not dogging Baker, but 2 of his dropped passes should have been interceptions.

  49. Saskbucs Says:

Yep, no other option at this point with where the Bucs will be picking. I still don’t see 40 million though. If Baker values this situation and wants to continue to win, he will come in around 30 I believe, and I hope.

  50. Marine Buc Says:

It was great to see “good” Baker show up last night and the Bucs got their running game going early and everything was clicking…

Our interior O-line is still awful – Mauch is getting man-handled, Hainsey is not athletic enough and Stinnie is just a back-up guard.

    Too many dropped passes.

Other than that it was a great game.

    LFG!

  51. Jonbucfan Says:

Talking heads are not giving the Bucs any love this morning? Only conversation is about how bad the Eagles played? Show some love…the Bucs played a really good game. (Period)

  52. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Tony

Yes – Baker was able to throw several passes longer than 12 yards.

Too bad Mike Evans dropped them.

    Oh well.

Am I supposed to be mad that Baker played well?

Get a grip little man. Let’s just all enjoy this one.

  53. Obvious Says:

    NE,
You have lost all respect. You’re done. An Extremely Sad, and “OBVIOUSLY PATHETIC” display of Poor Sportsmanship.
I thought you had at least a little more class than you wiping yourself in your own excrement.

Grossly PATHETIC.. And now there is not a chance anybody will take your cowardly gestures seriously. NE, you are being laughed out of here at Your Own Expense. AND YOU DESERVE IT!!!

    GO HOME …

    GO BUCS!

  54. NE Fan Says:

I just wonder just how bad Fakers ribs and ankle would have bothered him if the Eagles hadn’t decided to quit on their season last night? He sure looked like ER bound during the Carolina embarrassment. Things that make you go hmmm! After all he dies have that commercial acting experience. I heard Bowles wrote a thank you letter to all the Eagles players this morning.

  55. Jack Clark Says:

Hey Joe, we are better without Tom Brady! 😃

  56. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I freaking missed 98% of the game! I have got to find a repeat before 5pm tonight! I had the game on a tiny screen, and was about to keep an eye on the score, but that’s it. (My broadcast audience got constant score updates).

I did catch the shot of the Eagles owner in his box though. That was a ‘fire the coach’ expression if ever I saw one.

Without having seen nearly enough (yes, I’m whining…grrr), I think last night Bowles earned another year.

From what I understand, Mayfield didn’t look hurt?

If that is the case, Bowles had everyone fooled coming into the game. I suggested that would be a good strategy, but I honestly didn’t think Bowles would pull it off.

As to Mayfield, last night drove up his price. I’ve already admitted this, but he deserves me saying it again: I was 100% wrong about him.

    I’ll take it a step further…all you Baker-lovers were 100% right!

I had dought about last night’s game because of Bakers injuries…but…wow.

I’ve always said that if you cannot win in the playoffs, there is not point in being in the playoffs. The Bucs won!

  69. Erik The Viking Says:

Baker has earned a good pay raise and will likely remain in Tampa.

You win a home playoff game with those stats against a hated rival, yeah you get to stay.

But we should hedge that bet with a QB in the draft.

You never know what next year will bring.

Looking forward to round trwo on Sunday.

  70. Gipper Says:

    ChiBuc,

Nice try at being a diplomat. When we pushed back at the many who blasted Bowles and Baker daily on these pages, don’t remember much support from you. Half the fun in last night’s great win is to hold up a mirror to those alleged “Bucs fans” who have been nothing but merciless in their nonstop criticism. Funny to read today the same bunch trying to backpedal from their past remarks. Some of us haven’t forgotten.

  71. David Says:

Baker looked good against a bad team. Most of Baker passing yards were after the catch by the receivers against a secondary made out of the bench players. Baker hasn’t earned crap yet. He also hasn’t defeated any good team yet. Baker is still a trash until he wins a big championship game/super bowl. The cupcake games are over.

    ________
Some screwballs never learn. Joe Montana is in the HOF because he threw 10 yard slants or 10 yard crossing routes to Jerry Rice who took the ball to the endzone for 75 yard touchdowns. The West Coast offense relied on quick short passes and took the 49ers to many Super Bowls. When Baker threw it perfectly 50 yards to Mike E last night, the pass was dropped 3 yards from the end zone. That is not a criticism of Mike Evans who is the best it is just an acknowledgement that there are a lot of ways to win football games and everyone makes mistakes. Great teams and great players overcome their mistakes.

Davey quit hanging around playgrounds, you are a scary cat.

  90. Conner50 Says:

First of all Winston never went to the playoffs with the Bucs because couldn’t stop giving the ball away. Hard to believe Mayfield is the only qb to do that in Buc history. Resign him but I still think he’s gonna have to be very friendly with a deal so he can keep his boy Evans too.

  92. Donald G Says:

First I have to say this NE guy is an idiot. The bucs outplayed the eagles. Simple as that. That was a great team effort right there. I do think we can beat detroit.Just need to play like we did last night. If we do continue I think we can win it all. Also I will admit I wanted them to tank for the draft midseason. Sure am glad they didnt !! GO BUCS

So David says, is Green Bay not a good team? Perfect qb rating at Lambeau. Man you are stupid. Baker has thrown more touchdowns as a rookie than Peyton Manning, on a team that had gone 1 and 31 the 2 years before he got there, and after only playing in 14 games. The qb who started that season was wholly ineffective. Baker comes in on same team and wow what a diff. The next year he takes to a playoff win and almost won the next game except for a receiver who tried to do to much and fumbled the ball through the end zone. Bad luck. Then he tries to play an entire season really injured and didn’t look good. Man you are a straight idiot. You have the mental agility of a small soap dish.

Dave, after proving u don’t know sht about anything you would think we’d get a reprieve from your BS. Guess your to retarded to recognize this. I also heard your pissed at Mayfield cause you caught him in 3 way with your wife and mother while wearing your bathrobe and slippers then wiping up all the ejacculate with your pillow

How did you allow this poster with this insane language ? I thought you censor comments on this website. Please provide us a rational reason and an explanation for allowing this. There is no place for these type of language on this website.

This guy David posting above me really some kind of moron. The best thing for the team is hope we can get Mayfield and Evans to sign deals that leave us cap space to re-sign Winfield and still have room to make an upgrade at C and on the defensive front. Or we draft the best center in the draft, that’s an option also. I feel that the team will have the cap space to get it done with a lot of dead$ coming off the books and hopefully we can get our guys to take a small bit of a hometown discount if necessary to make it happen. I’m not talking about them sacrificing 10 million, but if we’re close and it’s only a difference of a couple million, I mean, don’t you think it’d still be worth it for Mayfield to stay here? Say we offer around 30 and another team offers a couple more- but he knows here he has a good organization that believes in him, where some other team might fire half the coaches halfway through the season like every team he’s been on before and it’ll be a train wreck and he won’t get all his money anyways. He should stay here even if we can’t offer quite as much as the bottom feeder teams can… remember that they are bottom feeders and we’ve won the 2nd most playoff games behind the Chiefs (so far) for a reason! Better to be here! Obviously the Chiefs aren’t going to sign him!

  97. Daniel Dream Says:

I don’t say this lightly: there’s something to be said for being g a class organization who does things the right way. Don’t take risks for granted. Half the teams in the NFL would’ve fired everyone and went into the tank as soon as we had a rough spell- and where the hell would we be now? We’d be starting over with the losers instead of playing to go to the Superbowl. I’ll give you an example that might not be the hottest take right now, but you have an organization like the Steelers who believe in their guys and stick to the plan and that’s why they literally never miss the playoffs. Idiot teams like the Panthers fire every damn coach and never maje the playoffs. It’s not rocket science. You look at the Eagles- they did us a favor by jumping ship on a good defensive coach in the middle of the season, and that didn’t help them against us! No way, no how. Hell, the Dolphins probably would’ve signed Brady when he left NE, but they couldn’t because they cheated! Literally we won a Superbowl because we did things the right way. It might not be what the cool kids like, but they got rings. No ring at all. Doing things the right way has its own reward.

Literally, there is one reason we are in the playoffs still and the stupid Browns are not: we have ethics and they don’t. That’s literally it. They lose because they did the wrong thing and we win because we did right. We should thank them for not believing in the Lord!!! Don’t let anyone ever tell you any differently: you win through hard work, doing things the right way, believing in each other, and the love of your friends, family and community.

I don’t think people hate Baker Mayfield that’s the word people love to use when you disagree with them about a player. I never heard any of you say you’ll Jamies hater. Now when it comes to Jamies it’s not called hate you say it’s because he can’t play that’s a contradiction. Baker Mayfield played good against the eagles but look at the last games of the season. Baker Mayfield is a inconsistent quarterback if you’re going to be honest wich means he’s a average quarterback at best and that’s ok. Our defense has to play lights out for us to win a superbowl. That’s not hate but because you believe he’s a hall of famer y’all call it hate .

Being an Oklahoma alumnus, I don’t take any comfort in comparing two OU quarterbacks in the NFL for their earning power. However, I have to point out that the guy who couldn’t beat out Baker Mayfield in 2017 to start at Oklahoma is rolling in lettuce.

Kyler Murray signed a 5 year, $230,500,000 contract with the Arizona Cardinals, including a $29,035,000 signing bonus, $159,797,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $46,100,000. In 2024, Murray will earn a base salary of $37,000,000 and a workout bonus of $1,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $51,857,000 and a dead cap value of $81,521,000. (Spotrac.com)

Kyler has played in exactly one (1) playoff game, a 34-11 loss to the Rams.

Baker Mayfield is 2-1 in playoff games having led an AFC team (Browns) and a NFC team (Bucs) to the playoffs and won 1 game with each (so far).

Who has brought more value to his team(s)?

PAY THE MAN- HE’S A STARTER IN THE NFL.

    Hey Oneilbuc.
Here is a thought. You should have stayed awake in junior year high school math. A statistical sample as small as one year includes all data—-good and bad. Mayfield, notwithstanding your dumb comments, otherwise had a year that placed him comfortably in the top 15% (maybe higher) of all NFL QB’s. This happened with a running game that was in the last 5% of all NFL teams. Fuly get it that you have to justify your endless negativity about Mayfield and the 2023 Bucs. Here is another thought, you don’t have the slightest idea what you are talking about and ,no matter, how you try most who comment here know you and your history.

  106. Student of the Game Says:

BucU, glad someone watched the game before commenting and noticed the drops.

  107. Student of the Game Says:

Ralph C, the reality of your post is lost here unfortunately. Also lost by many on this site, is that while Baker wants stability and is damn glad to be in Tampa, it would be a disservice to his family to take short term 30million a year when should TB beat the Lions a Kyler Murray size deal is deserved. I believe he will take less to allow money to keep Evans, and the rest of the crew, but there is a limit. Don’t insult the man. Do what you need to keep him.

That said, the defense rocked against the Eagles. Game ball to them. NE Fan, You’re not watching the game if you don’t know the struggles by the Eagles were due to TB defense.

  108. Student of the Game Says:

After watching all the post here for a season, as a Cowboys fan 1st and Baker fan 2nd, I would love for the Cowboys to trade Zac and get Mayfield. Then all the haters would be happy. Cowboy fans would be happy. Be careful what you wish for Baker haters. He is in the driver’s seat now. Not you.
