CBS: Bucs Still Have A Defense

November 15th, 2023

Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett.

It was really, really heartwarming for Joe to see the Bucs defense play aggressively and ornery and get after running backs behind the line and, of course, hound the quarterback.

Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports noted that after looking like the defense was about to mail it in for the season, Bucs coach Todd Bowles found his magic touch again as a coordinator.

Now what Joe is trying to figure out … was last Sunday’s game against the Titans a true resurgence of the defense or was it the terrible Titans?

Levis looked every bit the rookie he is. Derrick Henry looked like the old running back he is. “Old,” as in old for running backs (he’ll be 30 before the season ends).

The Bucs played fantastic on defense when you consider their best corner Carlton Davis didn’t even dress.

So has the Bucs defense turned it around? Joe can answer that in four days. Shutting down the 3-6 Titans is one thing. Slowing down the 49ers (6-3) is quite a different task with all the weapons they have.

LOTS easier to shut down the Titans than the Niners, I expect

  2. Cobraboy Says:

I agree, Joe. Before casuals say, “The D is Back,” recognize the Ti-Tans are a team circling the drain, and neither the rook QB or the “old” DH are anything special.

It is nice to get a W while playing reasonably well, but keep things in perspective.

This should have been a confidence builder for our defense…..hopefully we can play well on the road as we usually do……it certainly would be an upset but that happens in the NFL……Go Bucs!!!

  4. Craig Says:

The Bucs have the players, but the big question is if Hot Toddie can keep them focused.

He seemed to lose them during the Texans game and had to take really big steps to get them back for the Titans game.

Can he keep them on that line or is he going to end up with a roller coaster that goes up and down weekly. This would be a bad week for us to see a defensive effort like against the Texans.

  5. Boss Says:

The game should be summarized as two very bad teams…playing very sloppy football…….and the Bucs D didn’t suck on a few plays.

  6. Hammerhead Says:

Maybe the the label “best”cornerback applied to Davis is no longer valid especially after the Texans debacle and seeing how we didn’t miss him against the Titans. The secondary did fine without him and his big contract. Right now I am not sure we have a best cornerback.

  7. Alanbucsfan Says:

Yes, Purdy has alot of weapons- the Bucs must pressure and confuse him with different looks- and they have to stop McCaffrey…and who’s covering Kittle?
The best chance for a Bucs win is the offense features Godwin and Evans- forget the 2 yd runs on 1st down , make the game an offensive shootout and get some turnovers.

Do you know why we sucked in Houston?

Because Houston is a party city with hot and horny hoes.

Our guys were partying the night before.

It’s okay if they take 1 or 2 puffs before a game.

I think they smoked too much in Houston.

Watching Henry struggle proved he wouldn’t be much of an upgrade over White. He needs momentum to be able to wear a defense down. I dont make much of beating the Titans, they’re bad, we’ll see where we stand when we face the 49ers. If there’s one thing i’ve noticed with Bowles, his defenses tend to perform much better the 2nd time facing a new QB. Purdy lit us up last year but there wasn’t much film on him at that time…..there is now. I’m certain if we sit back in zone, Purdy will pick us apart.

I have a good feeling about Sundays game! Back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s the Bucs always seemed to play the 49er’s this time of year and they used it as a springboard and won and dominated for the rest of the seasons!! Go Bucs!!

  11. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

DEFENSE PLAYED AWESOME AGAINST THE TITANS..I KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO BE FINE DOWN THE STREACH..BUT, OFFENSIVELY, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE BUCCANEERS GRAB MICHAEL CARTER OFF WAIVERS FROM THE JETS & CUT KEYSHAWN VAUGHN TO MAKE ROOM FOR HIM !..JASON LIGHT:..IT’S TIME TO GIVE UP ON VAUGHN..MICHAEL CARTER HAS AN UPSIDE THAT’S TOO GOOD TO PASS UP AT THIS TIME..OUR RUNNING GAME NEEDS THIS BOOST & THE MAN CAN ALSO CATCH THE BALL !..DON’T DELAY & MISS OUT ON THIS SIGNING..I FEEL HE ( MICHAEL CARTER ) COULD VERY WELL BE A GIFT FROM GOD AT THIS POINT IN THE SEASON..

  12. Lombardi Lenny Says:

49ers gonna slap the snot out of Bowels and Canales.

We just lost 4 in a row before beating a terrible team with literally no offensive line.

Deep breath everyone, Bowles is still the HC and Forest Gump the OC

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

    Secret to offensive football.
If you have a great Offensive line- your QB, Rb, and Wrs will look like all stars.
If your line sucks (Bucs, Titans), then your skill players will look bad.
Titans line sucks, we were able to heat up their backfield all day.
Our line has 3 good guys, a couple weak links- Mayfield made it work.

San Fran has a very good line. They will manhandle our pass rushers, other than Shaq. And one guy doesnt make a pass rush.

And San Frans D line will abuse Stennie and Hainsy. No running game again.

Vince Lombardi said Football is a game of Blocking and tackling.
He didnt say running, Catching, and Passing.
If you can do the first 2- he knew the rest would take care of itself.

  14. ScottyMack Says:

Plain and simple, the Bucs’ defensive scheme last game is exactly what it should be every game … aggressive blitz and press coverage on the corners. That’s what this defense was built to do and trying to stuff a square peg into a round hole never works. Please let me never see off-coverage zone again!

  15. Tbbucs3 Says:

The defense is far from back. Still too many holes at SS, pass rush, scheme, and corner.

Levi’s has plenty of opportunities to hit wide open WRs and failed.

The only thing I was surprised by the stopping Henry.
