CBS: Ceiling For The Bucs Is 10 Wins

September 5th, 2023

Breakout?

Joe will call it. If the Bucs win 10 games this year, Baker Mayfield will have had a resurrection and the defense will have played lights out.

And quite possibly, the Bucs will have found a quality edge rusher to help Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett.

Over at CBS, good guy Jeff Kerr went through each and every team trying to determine their season. Kerr’s research, tells him the best the Bucs can do is finish 10-7.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2022 record: 8-9)

Ceiling: 10-7, win NFC South

The Buccaneers are certainly going to be a team led by their defense this season, as they were able to keep Jamel Dean to pair with Carlton Davis in the secondary. They added Calijah Kancey on the defensive line to help out Shaquil Barrett (who is healthy) and were able to bring back Lavonte David and keep Devin White happy. Of course, Vita Vea is still a presence. The offense has question marks, but Mike Evans and Chris Godwin remain at wide receiver. Rachaad White also appears to be the next 1,000-yard rusher. This team has talent, with key contributors not far removed from a Super Bowl title.

Yeah, for the Bucs to win 10 games, it won’t all be on Mayfield’s shoulders.

Head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Dave Canales both say they want to run the ball. So if the Bucs get to 10 wins, that also suggests Rachaad White breaks out.

If the Bucs win 10 and Mayfield bounces back with White breaking out, Joe expects Canales will be a head coach somewhere else next year.

    6-11.

  2. Smashsquatch Says:

Can’t wait to see how well Canales adapts to play calling for the first time. No doubt he’ll be a hot commodity if he resurrects Baker and White looks like a feature back. Too bad this benefits Bowles too. In this scenario, I’d rather keep Canales over Bowles.

  3. Casual Observer Says:

I like the optimism. I hope for the same. I think there is a good chance that this very young team will gel soon and surprise many.

  4. Da Bucs Guy Says:

    5-12 .

  5. 757Buc’em Says:

Canales will not become a head coach next yr no matter what. We can make it to the nfc championship game and he will not become a head coach during the following offseason. Dave Canales is your Buccaneers offensive coordinator for the next 3/4 yrs guaranteed

  6. Smoothbayrider Says:

You guys that are on here predicting 6-11 and 5-12 are not Bucs fans. The only reason you are saying that is because you care more about beating your chest to and saying you were “right”, than you do being a Bucs fan. I don’t know why people feel the need to act this way nowadays, but I’d have to think that social media is to blame for this kind of mentality…….

It’s freakin Sad, and something needs to change .

    Sincerely,
    Smooth Bay

  7. Lt. Dan Says:

Maybe the Bucs get the 10 wins. Then Canales slides into the HC position. Adios Mr. Bowles.

  8. bucsfaninOregon Says:

If the Bucs win 10 games this year Bowles will get an extension. Candidate for coach of the year. Nice dream.

  9. bucsfaninOregon Says:

    8-9.

  10. Marine Buc Says:

    17-0.
    3-0 in the playoffs
    1-0 in the Super Bowl.

    Go Bucs!!!

  11. Buc4evr Says:

Agreed Marine Buc. I am being optimistic this week 😂. Go Bucs!!

  12. BillyBucco Says:

Wow can we please start playing real games.
These predictions are all over the place.

  13. Dwayne Cone Says:

Marine Buc is absolutely correct. Best they can do is 17-0.

Just goes to show that nobody dreams of winning the Daily 3.

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

If they are like a top 1-3 defense they can basically be in any game. But to me that means we’re getting like immediate production from defensive rookies and JTS steps up and SHaq is back and no one gets hurt in the secondary

  15. Pickgrin Says:

    9-8 or 10-7

7 wins is the floor – 12 wins the cathedral ceiling

Take the over if you can still get the Bucs at 6 1/2 wins

This team has talent – more than most teams

And we’ve got moxie too…. LOL

Seriously though – this team is going to fight hard all season long – play really well at times – and win more games than they lose. You’ll see.

  16. RustyRhinos Says:

I agree with you, Marine Buc.
    “17-0.
    3-0 in the playoffs
    1-0 in the Super Bowl.

    Go Bucs!!!”

    Only real view to have.
Win the task at hand every day.

  17. Bucsfan13 Says:

Brady seems to be very high on the Bucs. He said so on his podcast. He mentioned White and Otton as players that will make a difference

  18. go dawgs Says:

10 wins?? lmfao… 6 or 7 would be my thought. the schedule is tough.

  19. Duane Says:

    Nobody knows a gd’d thing.

That’s why they play the games.

  20. Defense Rules Says:

757Buc’em … ‘Canales will not become a head coach next yr no matter what.’

Agree 100%. For heaven’s sake, he’s never called plays before at the NFL level. If you were a multi-billionaire team owner, would you entrust your franchise to someone with that background who happened to be OC of a team that just went 10-7? Few owners would be that foolish to hire someone for HC based on 1 year of experience as a coordinator. That’s not how you become a billionaire.

More to the topic though, I agree that the Bucs ceiling is probably 10 games, with a floor around 7 games (been saying for months now that we can make it to 10-7, providing that we can stay relatively healthy). To do so will require a Top-10 defense (preferably a Top-5) and probably a Top-15 offense. Both would represent significant improvements over last year (#13 defense & #25 offense), but I think it’s doable if we can keep our starters healthy & get a few of these youngsters to kick some butt.

Sounds like a Koetter 2.0 kind of predicament!

  22. D-Rome Says:

You guys that are on here predicting 6-11 and 5-12 are not Bucs fans.

    Yes we are.

The only reason you are saying that is because you care more about beating your chest to and saying you were “right”, than you do being a Bucs fan.

Wrong. The only reason why you are saying this is because deep down you know I’m right and that this team is going to have a losing season.

I’m not going to be spiking the football on my prediction if it comes to fruition. I am realistic about this season. For most football teams there is a price to pay, a tax of sorts, in going for it and actually winning the Super Bowl. This season is the tax. The Bucs will be good over the next five years but this season is our down year. I can live with it.

  23. 1#bucsfan Says:

Every year I think we are going to win the Super Bowl. This year ain’t no different. You’re either for the Bucs or you’re not. No in between. You’re rooting for them to be successful that’s what fans do. Don’t be realistic cause you have no clue what’s going to happen that’s why we are fans we cheer and joes favorite word hope for the best.

  24. Dave Pear Says:

I agree with this take. Ceiling is 10 .

  25. Bucsthis Says:

13-4. Run game comes alive. Defense leads the league in sacks. Mayfield throws for 4800 yards, 32 TDS 12 INTs. Bucs get to NFC championship game. Write it down.

  26. FairMinded Says:

I’d be over the moon with 10 wins with a first year offensive coordinator and system and a boatload of raw young unproven talent! And that gets us to the playoffs where anything can happen.

  27. garro Says:

Sounds about right to me. 10 wins would put some of these so called experts in the unemplyment ranks maybe… No sorry… that would be in a sane world.

    Go Bucs!

  28. Steelers fan Says:

If the bucs win 10 games it’ll be on the back of Trask. Baker couldnt win 10 if you spoted him 9. My G^$ some of you are living in “Baked Brain” land.

  29. Davenport Says:

    5-12. Possibly worse.
Fire sale at the trade deadline
    Bowles fired on black monday

  30. WyomingJoe Says:

@ Steelersfan: Go back to Pittsburgh. I can still remember Baker kicking your butts in the 2020 playoffs.
