Bucs Training Camp 2023, Practice No. 18 Notes

August 22nd, 2023

Yes, training camp is still happening at One Buc Palace. But the bleachers are gone. You could barely tell they were even there at all a week after the last open practice was held.

Of course, Joe was there but since Joe had an awful vantage point of a good chunk of practice. Unfortunately, Joe does not have X-ray vision and cannot see through the wall of players, coaches, suits and Bucs staffers standing between where media was assigned and the practice field.  Thus, Joe couldn’t see who was doing what even with binoculars from over 100 yards away. So today’s practice notes, as well as likely will be Wednesday’s and Thursday’s, are abbreviated

* Baker Mayfield takes the first snap. At the time, Bucs coach Todd Bowles already had informed the team Mayfield would be the starting quarterback Week 1 in Minnesota.

* Joe’s not cranky this morning from lack of sleep. Therefore, Joe won’t whine about the first two plays being Rachaad White up the middle.

* Mayfield to Big Play Trey Palmer over the middle and wow, did Palmer throw it into overdrive.

* Sneak Vaughn runs left then cuts right big time cutting way across the field for a short gain. Maybe it is where Joe is watching from but the running backs are running with more urgency. They should.

* Deven Thompkins hauls in a deep pass from Mayfield down the left sideline.

* White up the middle for a good gain. Can someone tell Joe when White morphed into Mike Alstott?

* Now it is Vaughn up the middle.

* Hey, he’s got hands! Tight end Cade Otton, who has been battling a bad case of the dropsies this summer, goes deep down the left side and brings in a Mayfield pass.

* Ronnie Brown to the left for a few yards.

* Trask rolls right and overthrows Taye Barber.

* Trask throws to Sean Tucker to the right for a short gain.

* Patrick Laird runs left for minimal yardage.

* Mayfield to Thompkins down the left seam for about 15 yards.

* Mayfield connects with White on a short pass.

* Dominique Dafney catches a Mayfield pass on the right side.

* Tucker is Mayfield’s next target, this time along the right sideline.

* Cephus Johnson pulls in a Trask pass over the middle.

* Vaughn catches a Trask pass on the left side.

* Kaylon Geiger brought his catching gloves today as he pulls in a pass from Trask over the middle.

* Trask and Barber connect down the left seam.

* Vaughn runs right.

* Otton again catches a Mayfield pass to the left, this time deep down the left sideline.

* White runs up the middle. Again.

* Mayfield fakes a handoff to Vaughn and throws left to the sideline for Otton.

* BAD SNAP! Mayfield and Robert Hainsey can’t get a clean snap off.

* Tucker up the middle.

* Laird with a big gain up the middle.

* Trask runs left and throws down the left sideline for Barber for a nice gain.

* Laird up the middle.

* Trask is flushed to the right and he still finds Ryan Miller along the right sideline.

* Mayfield leans back and loops a pass to Laird to the right side.

* Trask throws over the middle for Miller who lays out diving for the ball and makes the catch.

* Mayfield throws way deep, maybe 40 yards to the left corner of the end zone and Chris Godwin makes the play for six.

Baker had a great practice. Was the first team defense sleeping?! Did they get any pressure. Seems like it was no resistance

  2. Craig Says:

Thanks Joe, and no problem with the obstructed view.

Sounds like Trask took the next step in his development and moved the pocket a few times, even if he found out Duh Baker is starting in Minnesota.

We’ll find out who gets the last laugh on that one.

  3. Give it a Rest, Trask Bridge Says:

Hey Joe, did it look like they’re still splitting first team reps, or is that nonsense behind us and we can let the 1st team gel?

  4. bucsfan951 Says:

i swear to god, if the bucs first play on offense in minnesota is a run up the middle, i might throw my remote at the tv.

    this is not a joke.

  5. Hodad Says:

Was Evans not practicing? Didn’t see a mention.

  6. Marine Buc Says:

Key’Shawn Vaughn is running for his NFL life…

He better do something – ANYTHING – against Baltimore or it’s over.

  7. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

    What does it even matter?

The worst QB in the league last year was just gifted the job.

    CLOWN SHOW

  8. Mr. Editor Says:

White up the middle? It’s all gamesmanship! The first offensive play of the season against Minnesota will be a play action pass for a 50 yard gain.

  9. HC Grover Says:

    Irrational Exuberence.

  10. Give it a Rest, Trask Bridge Says:

Hey, “mostly peaceful trask fan” – your QB was just gifted the QB2 position over the actual second best QB on this team – Wolford.

Trask lost the competition and looked at his best like an NFL backup.

    Give it a rest.

  11. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Mayfield looks like he has improved on his passing but still has a problem with the snaps. Not sure why this is happening so much.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Trask finally got a promotion to #2….should have been 2 years ago.

    Any Chase Edmonds sighting, Joe?

  13. JD Still Says:

As the head coach it is his prerogative to put the players he thinks are the best on the field in order to win, and as such he is responsible for all the team does , or fails , to do ,and to accept the accolades or consequences of those decisions. A time honored ,and fair ,method of assigning credit ,or blame.

  14. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Sounds like a good practice, except for the defense.

  15. 1#bucsfan Says:

It’s not over for trask yet. At some point this season trask will get his shot to shine

  16. Mike S Says:

Bucsfan13 its guaranteed that opposing defenses aren’t going to lay down for Mayfield.

  17. Goodbuc'nlife Says:

This will make me miss Jameis. Hopefully I’m wrong.

  18. Mike S Says:

1# bucsfan nah – I think I agree with SI. Trask got jobbed.

The precedent is set. They don’t give young QBs a shot here. They can’t pull the trigger. They’d rather give the job to a guy who leads all QBs in INTs on a 9 pass sample size rather than give a young QB a shot.

    This is the truth.

Now watch watch happens on Saturday.

Trask needs to go out and tear it up. Mayfield will be against the 1s now. ish is about to get real.

  19. kaimaru69 Says:

    @Mike S
Mayfield was the only QB going against the 1s in Pittsburgh but spin your stupid take Trask stan

  20. Joe Says:

Hey Joe, did it look like they’re still splitting first team reps

    No.

    Any Chase Edmonds sighting, Joe?

Thought so but not sure. Couldn’t make out the number (obstructed view). 🙁

  21. kaimaru69 Says:

    @Mike S
I saw nothing on SI on Trask

  22. rrsrq Says:

Is the first pick doing any running or off to the side drills yet?

  23. Lord Cornelius Says:

The SI article is literally all based on Trask’s body language after the preseason game lol . Kind of insane in todays world a headline can read “how the relationship fell apart” which implies Trask has demanded a trade, and then you read the article and the entire summary is nothing but speculation based on a moment of body language. They may be right but what a misleading title

  24. SlyPirate Says:

    “Bucsfan13 Says:
Baker had a great practice. Was the first team defense sleeping?! Did they get any pressure. Seems like it was no resistance”

My thoughts exactly. Where’s the stifling defense we saw against the Jets?

  25. Marco Says:

The first 2 plays in Minnesota will be running plays up the middle the 3rd down play will be a dump off pass for minimal gain and 4th down will be a punt. Who in this universe does not know what’s coming?

  26. ScottyMack Says:

Mike S wrote: “they’d rather give the job to a guy who leads all QBs in INTs”.

Actually, there are 10 active QBs in the league right now who have thrown more INTs than Mayfield …

    Matthew Stafford – 169
    Andy Dalton – 144
    Ryan Tannehill – 108
    Kirk Cousins – 105
    Aaron Rodgers – 105
    Derek Carr – 99
    Russell Wilson – 98
    Jameis Winston – 96
    Jared Goff – 70
    Dak Prescott – 65

Baker Mayfield sits in spot #11 with 64 INTs, 4 more than #12 Josh Allen (60).

I would maintain that every single QB on that list played with better teams and receivers than Mayfield has played with (until this year).

Although the Gator fans here will likely pull for Mayfield to fail so that the Bucs can bring in their beloved completely average QB, Kyle Trask, I, for one, am pulling for Mayfield and truly hope this is the beginning of an epoch career comeback.

    Go Bucs!

  27. firethecannons Says:

Nice! Thanks Joe! was it 11 on zero? where was the D? any D? I always just read aa handful of comments, this one caught my eye: Marco Says:

The first 2 plays in Minnesota will be running plays up the middle the 3rd down play will be a dump off pass for minimal gain and 4th down will be a punt. Who in this universe does not know what’s coming? I am putting this here to get reprinted. The second play will be a false start penalty on the Bucs, thereby cementing the 3 and out.

  28. Toilet Bowles Says:

Maybe our running game is a short pass to the running back.

  29. RGA Says:

ScottyMack, from what I understand Mayfield has thrown more interceptions then any other QB in the 5 years Mayfields been in the league.
Stafford has been in the league for 14 years, Mayfield 5. The rate with which Mayfield throws int’s he will be at 180 after 14 years at 12.8 picks a year.

    .
    .

I’m also pretty appalled after reading that. It totally justifies my opinion that SI has made itself completely irrelevant. Sad.

  31. ScottyMack Says:

RGA – Yes, I know the stat about Mayfield having the most interceptions since HE entered the league; however, I was responding to the statement by Mike S. that he leads all QBs in interceptions (not exactly the same thing).

Let’s put this in perspective, though. Mayfield has averaged a little less than one more interception per season than a guy who entered the league the same year as him – Josh Allen.

Do you hear people screaming about Allen being a horrible turnover machine QB? No, the same people denigrating Mayfield for throwing almost one more interception per season than Josh Allen would take Josh in a heartbeat as their QB.

Allen has had much better weapons to throw to than Mayfield has had in his career (except the year Landry and Beckham were healthy and he led Cleveland to their first playoff win in decades). Allen has also played on a team that had a much better defense than the Browns, meaning you are not playing from behind every game and have better field position.

Bottom Line: Mayfield is about the same as Josh Allen in terms of interceptions and finally has standout weapons to throw to. Hopefully, that leads to much better results that are more in line with what Josh Allen has done. There’s really no rational reason to assume it won’t be that way (unless someone is a Kyle Trask whiner).
