Todd Bowles On What He Expects From His Team

June 17th, 2023

Expectations.

Summer plans are more clear for some players than others.

Tristan Wirfs is staying in the Tampa to continue working out at One Buc Palace to ease his transition from right to left tackle.

Jamel Dean also plans to be at One Buc Palace every day, so long as the players’ cafeteria is still serving grub. Joe suspects there will be other players, too, who will regularly visit team headquarters to train.

But the summer break is an uncomfortable time for head coaches. It’s one of the few periods when coaches have no control over what may or may not happen. Most players will be scattered across the country if not the globe as they squeeze in as much personal time and family time until training camp opens in late July.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles was asked what he expects from players during this down time.

“It’s similar: come back in shape, injured guys – get healthier,” Bowles said. “Be ready to go [when training camp begins].”

And for the rookies, some of whom are from the upper Midwest and not used to the searing Tampa Bay summers, Bowles said they better learn how to handle the brutal Florida sun.

“Any time you come to the state of Florida, you should expect it to be hot,” Bowles said.

Apparently, someone with the Bucs tipped off the rookies.

“They understand that,” Bowles said.

So this downtime is when coaches really worry about players. Sometimes players reconnect with guys they shouldn’t be around and go places maybe they should avoid.

In other words, flirt with trouble.

College coaches are just as paranoid. Just last night, a Belicheats player pulled a Da’Quan Bowers.

If the Bucs all return to One Buc Palace next month unscathed, that’s the first step toward building on a successful season.

As Bowles said in his final media availability until training camp, “stay out of trouble.”

Here I was expecting something profound Joe based on the title of what Bowles expects from this team, and what I came away with was ‘Stay out of trouble’. Uhh, okay. Guess we’re in for a long 6 weeks now.

Just don’t get arrested for trying to bring a gun onto an airplane like that moron from the Patriots just did.

Seriously – what a total IDIOT… Why does this continue to happen?

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Stay out of jail & no charity basketball games.

This is one reason why you try to avoid drafting punks and dumbasses.

Interesting take from cornerback Jamel Dean after the mini camp ended:

“It’s been a great quarterback competition, watching those two compete against each other. The starting job is still up for grabs, so just seeing the grind that both of them are doing, it’s impressive to watch.”

this is the time of year you don’t want any news from a player…..it’s either legal trouble or some sort of freak accident…….remember JPP……Beckwith……Barth…..

    Boy, isn’t that the truth.

The Beckwith crash was so sad. Dude had a promising career destroyed by one of his pals (if you believe the story).

You know what? If you’re a multimillionaire and you can’t keep your ship together, do it now so the team can plan for your absence.

  12. Larrd Says:

Another inspired message for the players from Coach Bowles.

  13. Fred McNeil Says:

    Stay off Dale Mayberry.

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

    Or is it Maybry?

  15. sasquatch Says:

It’s Mabry. Google is your friend.

  16. Crickett Baker Says:

Mabry. Some of these guys (Iowa?} probably have never even seen the outside of a strip club. Dale Mabry calls..

I hope they find fun in watersports, though. Jet skis, fishing, tubing, and swimming down a river at Rock Springs.

States in the midwest have clothing optional establishments — so Joe is told.

More important is what is expected of Todd Bowles. Whether he can prove for the first time that he is not the awful head coach that he has been throughout his career. Starting right now with discipline and zero tolerance, tone setting, and leadership.

It’s OK the Bouncer at the Mons has everything under control.

    Go Bucs!
