Dee Delaney Likely Coming Back

March 15th, 2023

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

This is another sign to Joe that the Bucs realized if you aren’t going to have a pass rush, you better have a secondary.

Joe is still stoked that the Bucs were able to keep Jamel Dean, one of the better young corners in the game. One reason Joe was elated with this news is that without a pass rush, with a weak secondary you are talking about five-alarm fires each and every Sunday.

Think back to the halcyon days of the Mike Smith regime. He had no cornerbacks to work with, but the Bucs made up for it by not rushing the passer.

The result was a complete and total nightmare.

Well today, lost in the wake of the outstanding news that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht found a way, somehow, to sign Dean, acquire a quarterback *and* keep Lavonte David, was an underrated signing.

The Bucs extended the qualifying offer to sometimes starting cornerback Dee Delaney, which pretty much means Delaney stays with the Bucs.

No, Delaney isn’t Deion Sanders but he’s a solid backup and OK spot starter when needed.

Again, with Joe fully in the “Show Me” stage with Joe Tyron-Shoyinka and Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett, 30, trying to come back from a blown Achilles, Joe doesn’t expect the Bucs to have much of a pass rush if any at all from their outside linebacker spots — unless you are going to tell Joe that Licht swings a wild deal between now and training camp.

Given Licht’s history, that wouldn’t be a shock.

JTS is rapidly approaching being a first round bust. Statistically is he worse than Gaines Adams yet?

  2. Dooley Says:

“This is another sign to Joe that the Bucs realized if you aren’t going to have a pass rush you better have a secondary.”

This is such a half-assed line of logic lol

  3. Statisticly Insignificant Reader Says:

Stay the course Bucs. Don’t bring in any high priced retreads. Covet thy own players if warranted, (ie Dean, David). If Mayfield signs, it Mission accomplished on the CHEAP vet QB competition for Trask.

  4. Marine Buc Says:

Great. I like Dee Delaney… He knows the system and is another inexpensive solid backup.

He was on my list of 10 inexpensive free agents I wanted to bring back.

Hopefully Carl Nassib or Mike Edwards are next.

  5. NutterBuccer Says:

Pretty sure JTS will add some strength and not fall off qbs like he did last year. Dudes gonna be just fine.

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

The Fanman family crest says: “You can never have enough competent defensive backs.”

    Amen.

Good signing of a decent enough backup.

  7. Shak Says:

Marine, Nelson is back its on the front page already.

  8. 97 bucBaby Says:

As horrible as this team is and was last season all we doing is bringing these bums back smh yea time for Jason to go. Should have fired Bowles hired a new coach so we can go in a better n different direction. LVD old I love him but he old if we went D brooks packing why not him, if we let Sapp go SAPP PEOPLE! Then we can do the same for LVD. Never should’ve paid Carlton Davis, better not pay Devin. Lol we brought D.Delaney back 🤦🏾‍♂️ we need new blood new bodies fresh faces. N NO IM NOT TALKING ABOUT BAKER ”BUM” MAYFIELD. Todd Bowles is a leader of 11 not 53 can’t say that enough. This team is setting us back another 8-10 yrs

  9. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s kind of unfair to judge JTS and Hall yet. Once Shaq got injured, there was ZERO chance for JTS to emerge. That said, this is year three for JTS. NOW, RIGHT NOW, is the time!
For Hall, he needs to bulk up and develop his game more.
We really need both of them to step up.

  11. Allen Lofton Says:

Jason, find another Shaq Barrett to keep the sacks coming.

  12. Goatfarmer Says:

Jason is the rock star GM. Not that stooge Mark Dumforknik.

  13. Vlad The Impaler Says:

    Supposedly Mayfield is a done-deal.
Not sure how I feel about that.
Maybe he can make some cute commercials about living at RayJay?
    That’s the 1st thing I think of w BM (…LOL….I said BM)

  14. ElioT Says:

The defense really wasn’t the problem last year and they are brining back guys who produced. Still need to add pieces in the draft and value FAs.

It’s going to be a difficult year but we know that going in.

I think the moves thus far have been pragmatic and smart.

    Go Bucs!

  15. Vlad The Impaler Says:

LIcht is orders of magnitude better GM than hair-model Mark Dominick.

Dom is an example of the Glazers being lazy and cheap and not caring that much

  16. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Shak

I said Carl Nassib and Mike Edwards not Anthony Nelson.

I know Nelson has been signed already…

I think you maybe misread my comment.

    No worries.

  17. Pryda…Sec147 Says:

Can’t wait to see who we add in the draft

  18. SKBucsFan Says:

Is Licht just going to re-sign all of our free agents?

And apparently Baker Mayfield. 1 year deal for $8.5 million

  19. Fansince76 Says:

    Jason is working hard today!
    Go get em!
Great work on all the signings today!!

  20. BucsfanFred Says:

Dee has been a decent backup for us. Lord knows he gets plenty of opportunities to play.

SKBucs, Bakers deal is $4 mil, but can hit $8.1 with incentives

  21. BucsfanFred Says:

So far so good this off-season.

  22. unbelievable Says:

Mayfield signed for 1 year- 8+ million

  23. lambchop Says:

Mayfield for 1 yr at 8.5M and now Bucs are showing interest in Ez-E as Dallas released him.

  24. Joseph C Simmons Says:

I don’t care how good the secondary is; no pass rush means it’s getting picked apart. You MUST have a pass rush in the NFL.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You have to have players like Delaney, Leverette, Stinnie…….along with stronger contributors like Nelson, Dean & LVD.

We have to assume that Licht has a priority list of FAs just like his draft board & he’s signing them one by one….

More expensive players like SMB have probably got low-ball offers out there & will take longer to sign. If they don’t, they will be replaced by draft picks.

As a matter of fact, Zion (like it or not) may be SMB’s replacement.

  26. Duane Says:

It’s not clear at all that the Bucs have, or will not have, a pass rush in 2023. In 2022 the Bucs ranked #8 in the league in sacks, which JBF keeps saying is the only pass rush stat that matters. Being in the upper 25% of the league on something means you have it.

Now, will the Bucs do better or worse in 2023? Nobody knows, of course. Our best sack artist Shaq Barrett is expected to fully or mostly recovered from his injury last year. We’ve retained Anthony Nelson, one of our better sack artists. JTS will be in his third season and he is expected to get better. And it seems likely that the Bucs will draft another pass rusher next month, maybe two.

Plus our linebacker corps is now intact with both Lavonte David and Devin White returning, and they are competent at rushing the passer, especially White. Indeed, the Bucs are now returning all of their top 9 pass rushers from last year’s pretty good group of pass rushers. We may not have a single guy who hit double digit sacks last season, but we’ve spread them around a large group, which actually makes it more difficult to defend than just having to try to neutralize a single great pass rusher.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

Rubbing it out in the closet. Great day.

  28. Joshua porter Says:

The bucs should try and sign Darius slay who just got cut . Then the bucs would have a great back in .

  29. SufferingSince76 Says:

Dooley, be careful poking the bear. It usually doesn’t end well.

  30. Letsbucinggo Says:

Why don’t they sign Murphy-Bunting the cap is a joke anyway don’t you have another picture of Licht he looks like a doofus in this pic.

  31. Rod Munch Says:

Dee Delaney stinks, he’s way too slow to be playing in the defensive backfield.

If he’s just a special teams guy, I guess that’s OK, but he’s played plenty of snaps and there’s no reason to keep him on the roster as a corner. If you can’t run, you can’t play the position. There’s no way to fix that.

    ——–

I could not disagree with you more. Watching wide receivers run past him over and over and over again, I had Ryan Smith flashbacks. I do not like this guy at all, he’s just way too slow. But I hope you’re right.

  33. Buc4evr Says:

Good signing but we need some horses on the DL.

  34. Dooley Says:

    @SufferingSince76

That take that we have to resign Dean, a player we’ve had the last 4 seasons because we “can’t rush the passer” is bologna.

  35. Allbuccedup Says:

Oh Dee Delaney thats breaking news surprised that didn’t upstage Rodgers playing for the Jets on NFL network.

  36. Allbuccedup Says:

I guess with all Bucs earth shattering news this was the best Joe could come up with.

Dee’s bucs are going to suck deez nutz

  39. Mike S Says:

Jon Grudin I’m thinking the Bucs draft an edge rusher and Nassib won’t be coming back unless he’s a camp add because of injury.

  40. Mike S Says:

Joseph C Simmons yeah this team needs and EDGE rusher for sure.
